  2. None are stronger than each other. It all depends on a person and how high or low their jeevan is. For some Mool Mantar helps them see Vaheguru clearly and for some its Vaheguru simran. Each one has its own purpose, but gets a person to the same destination. One is not faster than the other either. If you are more concsious of yourself, then at times.....depending on what Bani you read, you will want to do one over the other. But then another time you will want to do the other one. And sometimes Maharaj does so much kirpa you want to do both with all the energy in ur body not stop for countless hours. Giani Thakur Singh ji said, instead of talking about Sikhi, just start practicing it and you'll find out the answers. Satguru also said this in Gurbani, by saying truth is high, but higher is truthful living. Practice, contemplate, experience, and then become one.

  4. Today I watched my kids putting the tree up, whilst trying to fill their heads that this is a pagan northern European tradition to do with Winter, Santa is a Sikh name, what is in it for Sikhs to do this etc etc..... Then I wondered - rather than a star on top of the tree which is a representation of the sign of Isa's birth, why don't we replace this with a Khanda? Is that ok to do - any thoughts.

  8. Two Day Gurbani Gutka and Pothi Repair Workshop. In this workshop you will learn the basics of how to repair and rebind damaged or birad gutka sahibs and pothi sahibs. The first day will cover basic rebinding using traditional and adapted techniques. The second day will cover basic paper repair. Dates: 27-28 Dec 2012 Times: 9am-5pm both days (Thurs and Fri) Location: Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Southall Park Avenue Basic tools will be provided to share but please try to bring as many of the following items as possible: Pencil, Craft knife, Stanley Knife, wood/mdf off-cuts, scalpel, metal ruler, wooden mallet, cutting mat, large sewing needles, clean painting brushes, scrap cardboard or a chopping board and also a hazuria cloth. If you are interested in signing up please send your name via email to: pothirepair@gmail.com Or call 07757082680 The workshop will have a maximum capacity of 15-20 students. Please only apply if you are able to attend both days as a minimum of two days is needed to learn the basic skills. Why is the workshop being held? The topic of Gurbani Pothi Sahibs and their repair may seem distant and unimportant to many. Yet it is of central importance if the Sikh community is to better itself and become closer to the ideals enshrined by our Guru-Sahibaan. The reasons why can be covered in a book or an essay. However, they can also be summed up in the THREE bullet points shown below.Gurbani and Gurmat granths themselves extol the virtues of doing seva of Gurbani’s Sargun Pothi Sahib Sarup.e.g. “Pothi Parmesar Ka Thaan” “Dhan su kagad kalam dhan…” The workshop will be a chance for Sikhs to understand the virtues of doing seva of Maharaj’s sargun sarup. The community is currently treating gurbani in a 'use and dispose' way. Every month hundreds Gurbani Pothis and Maharaj Sarups are cremated in asthaans across Panjab and India. Hundreds of Maharaj Sarups are being printed on a monthly basis. This is leading to a “use and dispose” cycle whereby people would rather cremate a Maharaj Sarup than go to the effort of getting it repaired. Moreover, it has now become impossible to account for the hundreds and thousands of Maharaj sarups being printed. This has made it easier for non-Gurmat Dera groups to use Maharaj Sarups to legitimize themselves enough to attract Sikhs and benefit financially.Repairing damaged Pothi Sahibs and Maharaj Sarups on a large scale will mean that the need to print masses of Gurbani and Maharaj Sarups will diminish. The workshop intends to be one step towards reaching this destination. Many Historical Pothi Sahibs and Maharaj Sarups in India and abroad are in a state of disrepair or misrepair due to limited funds and attention. Training Sikhs in manuscript repair and restoration will help change this situation without the need to rely on paying non-Sikh manuscript restorers. The workshop will allow shardhavaan Sikhs to gain some basic repair skills which can then be developed in later workshops.

  16. Hardly surprising, SGPC is controlled by Indian government their objective is to slowly erase any evidence of the 84 attacks from the minds of Sikhs. Theyve already partially succesfully brainwashed or turned most of punjab into druggies...most of the young generations in India dont know anything about the 1984 movenment .. I belive theres more awareness and knowledge in the UK than there is in India.. I dont really hold a lot of respect for the indian Sikhs, theyre "paper sikhs" the first thing a Keshdhari from India does if he comes to the UK is get his hair cut and remove his dastaar...they have no ethics or principles...Obviously not all of them...but large numbers..

  20. Dead on! The moderates will make up lies about Bikramjit Singh ji, but he is stepping down because of personal Sikhi jeevan. Everyone wants Bikramjit Singh ji to be the president again, but everyone respects his decision. If anyone hears any other stupid reason, then it is all lies. Just ignorant, arrogant, lies coming from old men and women that are hell bent on taking Gurdwara donated funds into their own hands and using them for personal use. If you are worried about who will win, then do Chaupai Sahib the paath and do Ardas to Maharaj. :biggrin2: This election has nothing to do with table and chairs, although the moderate slate wants to make it out this way. Doesn't matter if the Gurdwara has tables or no tables. The goal of every individuals (Sikh Youth) is to get Gurdwaras back into teaching Sikhi to those who needed it the most and implement a platform where the message can be communicated to the targeted sangat. So if you see a Gurdwara that is abusing funds and it has no tables or chairs, then that does not mean nothing should be done about it. Actions should be put in place so the Gurdwara does not abuse funds, or does not abuse the sangat or stop it from any other misconduct it is committing.

  21. They are both stronger and as Jagga veer pointed out there is no difference between Gurmantar and Mool Mantar. I never understood why we as sikhs have so many doubts and sansas regarding mantras within gurbani.. coming back to the topic both gurmantar and mool mantar have nirgun/sargun gyan and both are extremely deep penetrating mantras and both mantras are agam agad bodh and yes both are capable to take who recites with full pyar/sharda/dedication/vidhi to sachkhand. Gurbani is agam agad bodh its complete shabad guru and complete manifestation of Vahiguroo nirankar himself. I think question should not be which mantar within gurbani is stronger but rather question should be put fwd to those who is meditating on mantra or gurbani- how far one is willing to dive into gurbani (Agam agad bodh) and get lost in it? Just to give everyone who may have doubts on mool mantar or gurmantar which one is stronger, just to reiterate its not the mantra within gurbani but again how far you willing to dive in it. I have a mona freind who is being meditating on mool mantar for 6 years now with full dedication, he is feeling vibration of mool mantra, he can hear the shabad resonance/dhuni inside when he sits in meditation. So if him being a mona can hear shabad(mool mantra) inside running then any gursikh can and should able to with mool mantar...so wake up guys, don't waste on dilemma which mantar(gurmantar/mool mantar) i should jap, just jump right in..times running out, there is no certainty in life - we don't know if our breath went out coming back in or not..remember death each and every breath you won't forget jaap.!!

  24. There are two slates running, the Sikh Youth Slate (http://votesikhyouth.ca/) and the Moderate Slate (http://bcmss.org/Home.html). The Sikh youth first won the election in 2008 but the Moderates led by Balwant Gill didn't want to lose power so they took the youth to court over some errors in paperwork. So another election was called in 2009, which a new Sikh Youth Slate (but still supported by the old one) won by 2/3 of the votes. There was overwhelming support for the Sikh Youth. The day of the elections in 2009 many kids with huge signs reading: Vote for our Future, Vote For Sikh Youth stood outside in the rain all day long. Many Kattar(strict) moderates called into the radio after and during the election and said that these kids have melted our hearts, when we had left home we had planned to vote for the Moderates but when we saw the kids standing in the rain and cold weather asking us to look at their future it hit our hearts. We were acting out of ego voting for the moderates just because of some petty issues like tables and chairs, we realized that Youth were the future and we need to protect our future so we voted for the Sikh Youth. This years election: It is a different Sikh Youth slate but it has the support of the old slate and there are 3 members from the old slate on the new slate. The president on the new slate was the Treasurer on the previous slate. The Sikh Youth have done a lot to improve the Gurdwara Sahib and the community. They have had many Smagams, seminars, camps, weekend programs etc. There have been many many amrit sanchars. When the moderates were in power for 13 years there was not even ONE AMRIT SANCHAR!! For a list of what the Sikh youth have done go to: http://www.gurunanakgurdwara.ca/cat_1/2010-2012-gnsg-program-recap I can go on and on about what the good the youth have done and what the moderates did (basically nothing) while they were in power. But that will be pointless. The moderates run on the platform of putting tables and chairs back in the langar hall, and putting thapars for those wanting to eat on the ground. The youth took away the tables and chairs but left some on the sides for the elderly and those that have physical problems. They also have some other points, most of which are good things, like making a gym, cleaning the gurdwara, following Akal Takhat Maryada etc. But the Youth is already doing all of these. The Youth already follow Akal Takhat Maryada. The youth is already doing construction and a gym is part of the plan. The Sikh Youth have done so much in the past 3 years. It can't all be counted. I'll give my personal experience. I helped out with the Sikh Youth since the beginning From the first elections till now. Politics will always happen, but these guys are truly dedicated to doing parchar of Sikhi and Gurmat. Three main camps are held every year for kids. I've been lucky enough to do seva in every single one of them. Hundreds of kids come to these camps, they learn about Gurmat, they meet other Gursikh kids their age and they get to eat nice food and play games. How else do we keep kids away from gangs and drugs? Join them to the the religion and community. When they have good sangat they won't go to drugs and gangs. One of the biggest accomplishments of the Sikh Youth is the Sunday Youth Darbar. This is one of the best programs ever to run in a Gurdwara. Both parents and the children come into the darbar and a little bit keertan, simran and katha in english is done. The darbar gets so packed that there isnt a place to sit when these darbars happen. I can speak from personal experience here again, my neighbors who are not into Sikhi at all and are the kind of family you wouldnt expect at the gurdwara go to these programs every week. My other neighbours who are radhasoamis also started going to these programs. Its not just the kids the parents come as well, and they learn as well. There can be no mehma done of the Sikh Youth. They've brought the entire community together. This is a BIG Gurdwara and it has lots of media attention. Whenever something big happens in the world the media looks towards this Gurdwara for a statement, for a program. When tragedy in Haiti happened the entire community got together with the Gurdwara and raised money and sent sevadaars to Haiti. When the shooting at the Gurdwara in wisconsin happened the Gurdwara Sahib did collective simran and an Ardas for the victims, and raised money. The media all came to the Gurdwara that day. This Gurdwara is the centre of the Community. There are other Gurdwarai in the Surrey area, but this is the oldest and biggest and the one everyone looks to whenever something happens. If the Sikh Youth lose this election the Gurdwara will fall from the Panths hands. So everyone in the Surrey area that is a member of the Gurdwara Sahib, don't be lazy, don't be worried about the cold and rain (and snow as it just started snowing here but who knows how long that will last) and go out VOTE FOR THE SIKH YOUTH!!

  29. If you thought it was a masterpiece then it is a masterpiece, no worries on my end! The bit at the end where Alfred nods at Bruce as he's sitting with Selina in the cafe is just wonderful. From a purely emotional perspective (minus any character bias from me) I thought that was class. Bruce seemed happy and content, although I do hope he married Selina and he's not just seeing her casually. The sanctity of marriage is vital! :biggrin2: My biggest complaint about TDKR is how everything felt a bit rushed. We needed TWO movies for the final part. Things just seemed to happen so quickly! EDIT: Since watching TDKR last week I've been walking around with a parna over my mouth and saying stuff like "You think the shadows are your ally?" and "...do you accept this mans resignation" etc.

  30. I've also been a fan of batman since I was a kid. I thought they did a good job of portraying Bruce Wayne as being a selfless servent. Although he walked away in the end of TDKR, he left on a good note with some insurance. It was a bit annoying how they portrayed Rachel and his relationship with her, particularly in the second movie, but overall the rest of the movie didn't really make me think much of it. It was a great balance between pleasing the masses and the Batman die-hard fans. I still think it was a masterpiece. ~~ The only disaster that makes me mad that I can think of right now is the Transformers series. Don't feel like starting about that lol

I use full voile for nok dastar and dumalla/gol dastaar. The nok dastar is over 7 meters and gol dastar i don't remember, but both are similar (not exactly the same) full voile. I suggest buying full voile from India (have a cousin who ties full voile to get you it).

  42. _Singhhster_, in order to do well in this world it is vital to cultivate your perception and observation skills. It is vital ti be able to understand what motive an individual or organisation may have for telling you something. Then, you will be in a position to be able to judge how much of what they say is actually the truth. Lets take that article from Sickchic for example. It tells you that those who oppose Dhundha are 'hoolgans' even though it was the dhunda supporters who were paid thugs. It tells you that the 'local sangat' supported Dhundha even though it was the local sangat who opposed him. You will do well to understand who is telling you what and why they are telling you it. They're smart for doing so. The rather silly and simple one would be you for falling for the trick. And btw....things are not "fractured along caste lines more in the UK". Its just that the UK diaspora is a far more varied group than in your neck of the woods. Here, a very many and varied background multitude of Sikh groupings exist in massive numbers. As such, there are a multitude of dialects, customs and even home-languages spoken by the UK Sikh community. This is not a 'fracture'. This is merely a much more heterogeneous society of Sikhs compared to your homogeneous one. You see, learning things is easy. The hard bit, and what is probably one of the hardest things in the world to accomplish, is being able to get a message opposing something written on sikhchic published on sikhchic. Achieving such a thing is indeed a great mystery. The greatest mystery of all however, is the identity of the man or woman that edits comments on sikhchic. A supposed master of the English language with the magical ability to change a comment to such an extent that the content not only becomes unrecognisable to the author it ceases to have the same meaning as originally intended. This great master - obviously the product of an elite private education in India - that doesn't seem to understand the western nuances of the English language and how it has evolved since the days of Dickens. Perhaps one day the identity of the said editor will be revealed. At the moment it is merely a mystery and we can only speculate. I personally think it is the ghost of either Mark Twain or Edgar Allen Poe. I would be shocked if it turns out to be a product of the 20th century.

  46. I'll tell you some good 'superfoods' for your detox : Alsi (flaxseed) and Tulsi (holy basil) All too often we dismiss the recommendations of our elders as being ill-informed or without scientific merit but....they know what they're talking about when it comes to superfoods. Our grandparents have been telling us alsi seeds have hyper qualities for years. But we only started listening when Californian movie stars started saying the same thing and made alsi an official superfood. Same with holy basil. I remember when my wife first came over from Punjab. She was feeling quite unwell and asked me to get some tulsi (holy basil). I tried and I tried but I just couldn't get any anywhere. The Chinese and Thai shops had it in paste form but I needed the actual plant leaves. In the end she told me to go down the local Hindu temple. She said every Hindu temple in the world will have some tulsi. I thought it was a bit strange but off to the Hindu temple I went. Lo and behold, they had the holy basil in abundance. The geezer there informed me that all Hindu temples have a holy basil plant because it is considered a herb of the gods as it has so many super healing qualities. Anyway.....you'll be surprised how many times the tulsi plant has soothed various ailments in our household. Same with the alsi (flaxseed). In the old days, when the average height of a Sikh was well over 6'2" and they were built like brick s***houses, the alsi seed was a major part of the Sikh's diet, as it mad their bodies strong and healthy. In modern days, the farmers just give it to the cows to fatten them up. Our strength and health has deteriorated accordingly. But in our household we try and put alsi in alot of things. It has so many super qualities it cures so many ailments. Actually I seem to remember an interview I read with the marathon runner Fauja Singh. In the interview he says the secret for his longevity and good health is the alsi walian pinnia that he eats religiously every day. Seriously i've got so much respect for the knowledge of the old timers from Punjab. They know so much more than we think we do. Take my car for example. For months and months I was driving around with a seriously overheating radiator. Leaking like hell. RAC man couldn't get to the bottom of it. Garage wanted to charge me a small fortune. Then an ol uncle visiting our house just happened to overhear my problem. He told me to put some haldi (turmeric) in it and the problem would be solved. Bish bosh bish...haldi in and problem solved. Happy days. Moral of the story ? wanna get your body detoxed so all the rubbish comes out and the goodness stays in ? Talk to an old timer from Punjab and get their advice. Health conscience Hollywood stars are doing it. Cut out the middle man (Hollywood) and go straight to the horses mouth. Oh....start growing some wheatgrass and drink 2 glassed of the juice you squeeze out of it per day. It will help in getting rid of the 2kg's of filth we've got stuck on the inside lining of our intestine. Either that or get a colonic irragation. But if you do go for the colonic...be warned...buy some adult nappies to wear on the way home. Friend of mine had it done and he made an awful mess on the car seat of the fella driving him home after.
