  1. Jagsaw naming your child after getting Hukamnama is not the end of the world. Nor does it have anything to do with Hindu Dharam. Just read about the Hindu Naamkaran ceremony and compare it with the Sikh naming ceremony. They have absolutely nothing in common or even remotely similar to one another. I dont understand how you have come to the conclusion that this is 'exactly the same' to the naamkaran ceremony. As for following Sikh maryadhas and Gurmat Paramparas which you are terming as "rituals". You need to inform yourself what are Hindu rituals and how are they performed before making misinformed comparisons between our traditions with traditions of aanmat. Using your line of reasoning we will discard everything in Sikhi because it happens to be a 'ritual' or because you seem to see similarities with Hinduism. This is Kala afghanist mindset. This is why some of his followers even pick and choose which Bani is authentic because they feel it is too Hinduish for their taste. And sadly, nitnemi Baanis like Jaap Sahib, Svaiye and Chaupi Sahib have been discarded by these people. Some have discarded some Bhagat Bani and Bhattaan de svaiye because it seems too Hinduish for them. Some like mr Ghagha have changed our Ardas because that also seems too Hinduish. One needs to use their Bibek budh. Sikhi is no doubt very distinct from Hinduism but lets not go to the extent of discarding authentic Sikh ceremonies and traditions which have absolutely nothing to do with Hinduism.

  2. you are funny sometimes how is taking Guru ji's blessings and getting first akhar from Hukamnama which is advise for that child a Hindu leftover ? ....please realise this is a sikh sanskar which you have missed due to confusion , when you kids have amrit they will have to take their name akkar properly from Guru ji. This is Khalsa sanskar not hindu ..

  3. There is nothing Hindu about this ceremony Jagsaw. Which Hindu uses Bani to name their children? Does Manu write in Manu simriti to use Bani of the Gurus? No way. The blessed perents who involve Guru Sahib in their Children's lives from the start recieve Kushi and kirpa of Guru Sahib. A Sikh tries to involve Guru Sahib in all events of his life. That is why we take Hukamnama in all our important decision making. This has been our tradition followed by all respected Sikhs since the start. And lingua franca of the Sikh empire was farsi not french. That is also the language our foreign ministers and generals used to speak to the British and Afghans. Back then Farsi was considered the French of the east. A language of royalty.

  4. No sherry Mister Singh. Maybe a little too much pepsi though. Too much fizzy pop made me think everybody understands the phonetic alphabet. I was wrong. My bad :( Basically though, I was saying how silly the poster was for advocating same surname marriage amongst Sikhs without understanding how most minor Jatt surnames (which only exist together in the same 10 mile radius of the same Tehsil of the same district) indicate that those with the same surname were part of the same family living in the same houshold less than 100 years ago. That, my friend, is insest. And that, my friend,is well and truly foxtrot uniform charlie kilo'd uniform papa !!!!

  7. Glad to hear other same viewpoint. If you see for the past 10+ years, you would see that majority of the problems and fights in our gurughars is because of something said by certain kathavaachak. I never heard of any problem created by raggi jatha singing gurbani. So there is another point that having limited katha vaachak means less fights. ALSO - If we ONLY do pure gurbani then people will follow Akal Purakh. However, if katha vaachak airs his own views, people will follow him.

  9. Addressing social issues and welcoming monas is all very well, but these will be for nothing if they are not carried out IN ENGLISH. The reason attendance at our Gurdware is not as high as it should be is because contemporary Sikh parents and grandparents have failed in their duty to educate their children about Sikhi and their Punjabi mother tongue. And when the Gurdwara's primary method of disseminating information is linguistic, it's no wonder that so many don't want to go, why would they? This is the central issue here and it will not be addressed for as long as those old, irrelevant farts continue to clog up the committees and insist on using our Guru Ghars as battlefields for their petty squabbles (with no English subtitles for the kids). It would also help if our Granthis and Raagis could speak English, as people tend to go them with their questions. Kudos to Big Tera Veerji for taking steps to address this problem- as I sit behind a laptop mouthing off. The Sikh people, myself included, could benefit from feeling some shame. I'm going to try and do more in 2016.

  16. 1. The Panthic Sikh Rehat Maryada explains how to take a Hukamnama: CHAPTER-VI Taking Hukam* (Command) Article VII (*Hukam:- Reading or Reading out to others, including the congregation, of a Shabad (hymns) or a unit of one or more saloks (short scriptural compositions normally of two to four lines) and a pauri (short stanza of four or more lines) from Guru Granth Sahib Ji after, or even without performing, Ardaas is an important Sikh ritual. It is called “Hukam laina” (Taking the order or command), “Vaak laina” (taking the word), “Awaaz laina” (taking the voice). The hymn or unit goes by the name of “Hukam” (order, command) “Vaak” (uttered Word) or “Awaaz” (voice). a. Doing obeisance to Guru Granth Sahib Ji, respectfully, taking a glimpse of the congregation, an embodiment of the Guru’s person, and taking the command : these together constitute the view of the Satguru (Immortal destroyer of darkness, the true guru). Raising the drapery covering the Guru Granth Sahib and merely taking a look or making others take a look at the exposed Ang (respectful word for page), without taking command (reading the prescribed hymn) is contrary to Gurmat (Guru’s way). b. In the course of the congregational sessions, only one thing should be done at a time : performing of kirtan, delivering of discourse, interpretative elaboration of the scriptures, or reading of the scriptures. c. Only a Sikh, man or woman, is entitled to be in attendance of Guru Granth Sahib Ji during the congregational session. d. Only a Sikh may read out from Guru Granth Sahib Jifor others. However, even a non- Sikh may read from it for himself/herself. e. For taking the command (Hukam), the hymn (shabad) that is continuing on the top of the left hand Ang must be read from the beginning. If the hymn begins on the previous Ang, turn over the Ang and read the whole hymn from the beginning to the end. If the scriptural composition that is continuing on the top of the left hand Ang is a vaar (ode) then start from the first of the saloks preceding the pauri and read upto the end of the pauri. Conclude the reading at the end of the Hymn with the line in which the name ‘Nanak’ occurs. f. Hukam must also be taken at the conclusion of the Congregational session or after the Ardaas. 2. The Granthi Singh's should take the Hukam randomly, the time of day or occasion should not play a deciding role and also not always from Sorath Raag like we witness at some Gurdwarey. This way, when the hukam is taken becomes irrelevant as we then leave it up to the Guru to decide what vaak they would like the Sangat to take laha from.

  19. To be fair to the people at that Gurdwara, are they actually wrong though? As Sikhs (and as believers in God), it's not unfair to say that atheists have, possibly, convinced themselves there is no God, and that life is wonderful without religion. Of course, they could easily turn around and say we've done something similar but slightly different at the other end of the scale. Although I wouldn't put it as bluntly and without explanation as the person being interviewed, I do think he has a point.

  21. Thanks for the encouragement. yep alot of people like to give it large on here with out doing anything proactive. I have some spare time and some connections so I thought I would use them for the benefit of Sikhi. I aim to hand out 20-30 leaflets a day. just imagine the difference this is making. 30 people who may never have heard of Sikhism suddenly know who Sikhs are and what their beliefs are and can also spread this knowledge to their family's and friends. Its not just about bringing people to the Gurdwara its about educating people about Sikhism. Once one person knows something about the religion then they will tell others slowly more people will become aware. Its also great fun making the leaflets you can be imaginative and create eye catching designs. I know basics-of Sikhi are doing this but there needs to be more people doing this kind of thing. P.S I also printed these leaflets from a friend who's got a print business so it did not cost me anything which was handy. It costs £50p to print each booklet. Ink is expensive. So I recommend finding a way where you can get a discount somehow.

  23. Just and update I have finished completing the leaflets and printed them off. I made a nice booklet and have been handing them out. So far the response has been great, many people were genuinely interested to learn about Sikhism. I think this is a great way to spread the message. More Sikhs need to do this up and down the country . In my 3 page booklet. I included facts about Sikhism and the key beliefs and practices such as Langar, belief in one God and concept of seva.

  24. Good point. How can new converts to Sikhism feel welcome when we cant even welcome our own. I would like to add bringing people to the Gurwdwara is not the main objective. Its more about making people aware of Sikhism So that they can do their own research after we give them the leaflet. The flyer will act like a spark to get them interested in learning more about the faith. If they come to Gurdwara that is good but it is not necessary for them to come, to learn about Sikhism. The main goal is to spread the teachings of Sikhism through awareness campaigns. This is a great way of making people aware of who Sikhs are and what they believe so they dont mistake us for other religions also. After reading the leaflet they may become interested in Sikhism and even convert. But first we have to show that we want them and that they are welcome. One of the reason people convert to Islam and Christianity is because these religions great sense of cherishment and love for new converts, Sikhs on the other hand their are to busy counting their money and dont care if anyone becomes as Sikh or not. Is it any wonder not not many people convert to Sikhism when we as Sikhs dont show any strong desire to shows what our religion is? P,S There are many websites where you can make professional looking flyers for free. This is one of the main ones i found. This is on of the main ones. https://www.canva.com/create/flyers/ I made a very nice flyer/leaflet in literally 2 minutes then you just dowload it and print it off. And your ready to go. Its very simple and easy to do. To hand out the flyers you can go to community events, Asian melas, high street, shopping centers. ect. basically anywhere were people congregate. We can specificaly target non Sikhs such as Christians, Hindus and even muslims. To hand out the flyers you can go to community events, Asian melas were you find alot of white people who are already interested in Asian culture/beliefs ect, high street, shopping centers. ect. basically anywhere were people congregate. Here is one I made in a few minutes. But obviously when you make them for distribution more effort will go into making them. You will also edit it so that it displays your local gurdwara address and contact details. website links to information ect. Its not about forcing religion on anyone. If people dont want the leaflet they will simply walk away. You will stand in the high street with the leaflets and simply ask people. "Can I have one minute of your time"? Then explain that we have Prayer evenings in the Sikh temple ect and would like to come along. At the same time you can give them some info on Sikhism.
