  2. I was at the Slough Singh Sabha gurdwara last week. I think he was a teen, a tall young Singh got a deep gash wound on his arm from gatka, somewhere near his wrist. He was already on the floor when I entered through the langar hall, but I am sure he did it to himself not through a gatka "battle". I am unsure which shastar he used. I checked and the shastars seemed lightweight for the children. I picked up the khanda and it was light, not like a real khanda. I really want to emphasise that we should not be promoting twirly sword dancing as a "sikh martial art". This young Singh was hurting and gasping - why are we teaching twirling swords around in a way that may hurt oneself?? Promote shastarvidiya savai raksha and other martial arts which are about causing damage to the enemy. Why are we teaching this style of twirly gatka that's detrimental/harmful to ourselves and our allies? A twirly sword might hurt an ally in a battle, and doesn't allow allied warriors good movement around the sword twirler. This also reminds me during the summer, they were teaching some move to kids where you do some spins with the feet and then do a backwards bhangra type jump. I wasn't sure if this was a martial art or bhangra being taught?! Also at another gurdwara in another city/town in the midlands, the year before at a kids sikh club a guest gatka teacher was teaching basics to little kids by making then practice making infinity symbols with the gatka sticks!!! If we are showing off something ineffective and also harmful to the practitioner and allied warriors, then it's nothing to be proud off! If we are going to show our puraatan shastars off, we need to do it in a respectable manner not in this archaic colonial gatka era! The teaching is just as embarrassing as the last 2 decades and I don't understand why we want to promote it as a sikh martial art, to the sangat and to outsiders? the injuries are just not worth it for learning this modern gatka! "Preserve Shastar Vidiya any way you can."(Rattan Singh Bhangu, Siri Guru Panth Parkash, ed. Dr Balwant Singh Dhillon, 36)

  5. Good point. In fact, in the old days, there simply were not enough birs of Gur Granth Sahib ji to go around. So prakash of shasters was done in some Gurdwaras. You can matha tek to a Gutka Sahib, too.

  8. Been so much nindya and attacking Shastarvidiya since the 2000s, however if we look at gatka now it's still mostly as poor and poorly taught as it was back then, still morris dancing moves and still behzti moves in BBC shows about sikhi and vaisakhi. If people were going to attack shastarvidiya, wouldn't have made sense to improve gatka instead and make it more effective? Additionally, the Nihang Singh presence has improved greatly now, and the cracks within the the SGPC and affiliated jatha jathebandis are showing more greatly as panth becomes more knowledgable with dasam bani and itihas day-by-day, so much gyaan which was lost within panjabi sikhs during colonial times. In the 2000s, the groups were able to talk down this bani and gyaan by associating it with RSS and hindus, brahminwaad etc. Not working so well now is it? However with gyaan it would be also good for us to try and preserve our martial arts and keertan vidiya as well! More and more crazy keertan videos are coming out from jatha members that are being made fun of and making sangat annoyed and upset, on tiktok and instagram reels.

  9. Author Posted April 24 On 4/21/2025 at 2:43 PM, ipledgeblue said: sirr should not be nanga because keski is usually worn. Sikhs can sleep nanga-sirr if they choose to . Being from Punjab, almost every Sardaarji i know (amritdhari or not) sleeps/showers with their hair uncovered. I don't think Guru Sahib asked us to wear Dastar to sleep and I don't think it is in SRM. The idea of "keski being worn to sleep" is cos in Bollywood films (Bachna Ae Haseeno) Sikh characters usually tie a gol parna when sleeping since the actor's usually Hindu. So they gotta cover his head somehow or he'd have cut hair. Same reason Diljit wore a pagg to bed in the El Sueno vid. Only time they didn't do that was in Gadar with Sunny Deol which just looked odd tbh What in the world? What sikh or even a decent human would base their knowledge of their culture or religion on a movie industry, that too Bollywood? Believe me, no sikh ever said, I must cover my head becasue an actor did so in a movie. I've been doing it all wrong, I must start covering mh head because the sikh in that movie did. Just because every panjabi and sardaar you know, does something, also doesn't make it right.. Follow the guru. And if you have a medical condition, then exemptions can be made. Just admit it, because of my medical condition, I am not able to follow this rehit. Why are you getting everyone else to drop to your level?

  12. yhh that's cos we keep men and women separate to make women feel comfortable here in the West. In India nobody would dare to do anything "pervy" cos they would probably get beaten to death but over here we can't do anything except kick them out lol so best measure is to keep them separate

  13. Ramgarhia Gurdwara disrespected Sikhi from their name alone. What happened was apparently Jatts used to take over the Gurdwara committees back in the 60s so Tarkhans went and opened their own Gurdware called "Ramgarhia" to deter us from going to their Committees and even from doing Darshan in those Gurdware. In some you actually have to be Tarkhan to join the committee, it's disgusting. They always use the excuse "Ramgarhia isn't a caste, it's to honour "Jassa Singh Ramgarhia". Lies lol they know what they're doing and even got the cheek to put in writing "committee seva... must be from a Ramgarhia Sikh family". It's nothing to do with "Ramgarhia Misl" it's just to keep Jatts out so Tarkhans can have their own Gurdware. Forget "langar maryada" - the langar is to show equality and hospitality for all regardless of background/caste and they failed step one

  23. A 17-year old kid in the UK stabbed 10 people and killed 3 children. This is quite a horrific incident. What makes this story nuts is the fact the British folks blamed Muslims when it was (according to media reports) a Black British Born kid brought up in Southport, England (he turned 18). There was rioting followed by a police van being burnt in front of a mosque. I have doubts that it was black British born kid-probably a British born Anglo-Saxon kid, just because the amount of support the groups involved in the riots get-but then again I might be wrong. This however is a clear indication in the times we are living in. A innocent 17-year old kid killing 3 children is crazy.

  24. Ridiculous. Just chuck your history away because it's not gurbani. What a joker.. typical modern day Sikh. "Sikhism" If it wasn't for rattan Singh bhangu how would you even know of your itias? Someone like you just came out of thin air.

  25. Shastar vidiya . The basis of the unarmed is foundation for the armed combat. There can be a point where u can't get to your weapons. What will you do? Of course the khalsa had unrmed skills. If your sword or weapons broke. What would you do? Grappling etc. wrestling etc. Unarmed combat is known as "platha"

  27. There is an app " sanatan shastar vidiya". Download it . You can see how different it is to gatka. Jhatka di vidiya and khed . Two different things.
    1 point
  28. Yes . There is a huge difference. Between gatka and the true vidiya of yudh vidiya. I'll say this again. Last twenty years various people have claimed there are other teachers of shastar vidiya...however who has come forward ? No one. Not one single Singh. Since day one it's only been Nidar Singh Nihang who teaches and posses the bhujangi vidiya of the khalsa. Who else has come forward to say they posses the vidiya ..no one.

  29. Bro, as stated above, you can do whatever you want. No one is snatching your starched turban, 2 weeks old, from your head. But what you want is for Guru's Singhs to call your turban in accordance with rehit. That's not going to happen. Also, why can't you simply tie your starched turban fresh every day? (Genuine question)
    1 point
  30. Bro, there's nothing wrong with adding starch to your clothes to enhance their ability to "stand". The objection is not to the starch. The objection is to taking it off in one swoop and putting it back on, like a hat. "Like a hat" doesn't mean throwing it on the ground. Do Englishmen throw their hats on the ground? "Like a hat" means taking it off and putting it on a shelf. Don't pretend to be naive, bro. The rehit, as stated by Bhai Nand Lal ji, is "paag chunaai kar bandai", that is, tie the turban section by section. No one is forcing you to do anything, but please don't pretend you're following the original rehit of Guru Maharaj.

  34. Oxford English Dictionary: Worship: reverence or veneration paid to a being or power regarded as supernatural or divine. The problem is missionaries don't think of Guru Granth Sahib ji as supernatural or divine. Rather they think Gurbani is merely some poetry about God, who is divine. Of course, this is totally wrong because 1) Gurbani is divine and is God and 2) Gurbani says "the Pothi (book) is the abode of God".
    1 point
  35. It's the missionary mindset. They would either deny that Sikhs bowed before Guru Nanak Dev ji or would say that that was only "respect" and that they only "worshipped" God. The reason, again, is they don't believe Guru is God. No, bro, it's the same thing. But just in case Veer Manpreet Singh thinks it's different, we can just say "Fine, we won't worship Guru Granth Sahib ji, we will do pooja of Guru ji." Part of this is caused by us using English terms and then quibbling over the definitions. If we just used the word pooja, there wouldn't be a problem. Also, Sikhs don't read Gurbani. If they did, they wouldn't fall prey to missionary preaching.

  36. Umm, so you're upset that this jatha did Chaupai the same way it's being done at Harimandar Sahib for 100 years? Shouldn't you be upset at the manager of Darbar Sahib? I'm not saying that Sikhs who are aware of certain issues shouldn't do the longer Chaupai, but there are only so many battles you can fight. Instead of calling some jatha traitors because they're doing the (for better or worse) "standard" Chauapai published by the SGPC, it would be better to change things from the central point. You can't fault the average Sikh for picking up the average Gutka and doing paath.

  37. The picture of Harimandir is not Harimandir Sahib. Best is to go to Gurdwara and do ardas at a quiet time. Just stand to the side to allow people to matha tek if they are coming in. While it's true that God's everywhere, we don't have the eyes to see him at our current spiritual level so the patakh darshan of Guru Ji is important. ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਹਿ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਕਰਿ ॥ Regarding thy mind's woe, make supplication before thy Guru. p519 ਤੁਧੁ ਆਗੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ Before Thee is my supplication. My soul and body are all Thine. p383

  38. Lol this is so common. This is the average wedding. Plus nowadays auntiyaan and young girls are dressing half naked in lenghas and saris and stuff or literally sometimes even a western dress. Men freely dance with women. Plus they hire some naked belly dancer or hire some Bhangra team dancing like monkeys at ur wedding. It’s awful. I assume it’s Punjabi culture. Let’s not mention all the men getting drunk and trying to hit on the women at the weddings. So many young folks skip the gurudwara wedding too because it’s boring and they can’t get lit even though that’s the main part of the wedding & most important. Amritdhari men and women are less likely to engage in such activities tho, I don’t see them doing this, when they get invited to such weddings they sit in the corner and refuse to engage or dance and such. I’m marrying into a non Punjabi family and me and my partner went to a Sikh wedding recently because he’s never experienced one and he was shocked and said he thought Sikhs were way more conservative.

  39. Leaving aside Guru ji, the general question of taking afeem (opium) in limited quantities for war/medical wounds is simply unproblematic. When you go to the hospital, they give you morphine. What do you think morphine is? It's an opiate. Even codeine (cough syrup) is an opiate! Ever had a cough? Granted, it is against Gurmat to take opium or other drugs for the fun of it.

  40. back then was waaaay different. ppl didn’t attend higher education or have much to do after the age of like… 13, lol. you’d have 13 year olds boys and girls that know how to do kethi, cook entire meals, etc nowadays even 22 year olds are extremely immature and can be sheltered. the average person doesn’t know how to do anything except their 9-5 which they are probably half arsing as well.

  43. Obviously every sikh has to learn gurmukhi, the phonetics in gurmukhi cannot be accurately translated to other language, however reading baani in english or hindi or spanish or whatever is better than reading no baani at all for people who cannot read gurmukhi yet. I think everyone should read Guru Granth Sahib ji as many times as possible, with meanings, you learn so much. It's also good to read dasam granth and sarabloh granth. We should read as much as possible imo, we're lacking a lot of knowledge in sikhi. Kirtan is essential imo, if anyone has the opportunity to learn raag kirtan, they should, and make sure kids know kirtan as well, it's the one thing that connects you. That's all part of religion though, learning gurmukhi, reading baani, learning about sikhi, and learning sikhi is for sikhs, not punjabis, we have to remember that the two are not synonymous.

  44. If without mava/starch, then tie it daily and change it regularly. I know many of my wider family who do this. Some choose to starch and may not change it as frequently. If your skill at folding is good, you will not need to iron it.

  45. Ever heard of something called a Kirpan/Kard? Its that thing all Amritdhari Sikhs are supposed to carry. If you think Krav Maga is the best, then stop trolling forums and practise. For someone who posts so much I doubt you even train in any art. For those who do SV, if they have understood its effectiveness then there is no need to convince someone on the net. Anyone who doubts can come along to the akhara and test it out. This has always been the case. As SV opens up to the worlds martial artists, its ability to hold its own and receive acknowledgement speaks much more then some random singh on a forum who even doubts his own indiginous art, and licks the boot of the firangi. When Nidar Singh comes to USA, i will let you know and you can go beat him yourself. Talking only goes so far, pick up your weapons and lay down your challenge.

  46. I was taught to tie my turban by my great-uncle who was from Kenya and as such I have a 'kenyan' style starched turban. Anyhoo, I was recently told by an Amritdhari that he could tell that I was 'Ramgharia' from my turban. For me, I couldn't believe that he actually made that distinction and he was amritdhari. It didn't matter that he was kinda correct - we go to a Ramgharia Gurdwara, but for me that's the closest Gurdwara and that Ramgharia is merely a name.
