Sant Kartar Singh Ji used to give many meanings to this word. Few are:

kI rqn - what a priceless ratan (saying amazingly like Wah)

kIr qn - something that "keer" your body and gets right to your heart.

Kirat Karni is different which gets your "Tann Safal" but Keertan gets your "Tann" and "Mann" safal. spelling doesn't matter. it is stupid English. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

Sat Sri Akal:

Definitions from the Dictionary of Guru Granth Sahib, by Surinder Singh.

ikrq - Punjabi noun meaning work, deed or action.

kIrq - Sanskrit based Punjabi noun meaning praise, glory, fame or repute.

So Keertan is the act of praising and Kirt is doing work.

(I do not know how to post with Gurmukhi alphabet, so please either edit it to reflect the Gurmukhi alphabet or cut and paste to some word processing software and change the font. Sorry).
