Babli doing drugs angers Sikhs!

It looks like a perfect case of love and hate. The more Bollywood is including Sikhs in the canvas of their films, the more problems it is creating for itself. After the Jo Bole So Nihaal fiasco, it's time for Bunty Aur Babli to go through the scanner. What is the connection? You may ask…all those who have seen the film must have also seen Rani Mukerji who plays a Sikh girl, Vimmi Singh, doing drugs.

The Sikh Prabandhak Committee has raised objection stressing that such scenes put their community under bad light. The members of the Sikh community have also demanded to that they be included on the Censor Board to regulate the movies that are based on their community.

Earlier, besides Jo Bole So Nihaal, the community had demanded deletion of few scenes from PNC's Shabd. Recently, the Sikhs in London have been provoked by Jag Mundhra's film crew for allegedly misbehaving in the London gurudwara.

How many of us know someone who label themselves as a Sikh, use the name Singh/Kaur and they smoke, drink and more?

I for one know many people like this, and so when there are people about like those being portrayed in films how is Bollywood showing anything wrong? It may not be what we think is a Sikh but there are people out there who say they are Sikh’s who do all that.

I am not for or against Bollywood but at the end of the day there are many people about like those being shown in films as a Sikh who label themselves as a Sikh in real life, so is Bollywood really that far off the mark?

We all know the situation of Punjab at the moment regarding drugs, how many people with the name Singh are getting high as we speak?

Yea, if they were to show an Amritdhari smoking or what not then we would have something to complain about, but considering what they show isn’t a lie, what seems to be the problem?

Not all Sikh’s are like those being shown, but at the same time not everyone who claims to be a Sikh is like what we would like a Sikh to be..

Peace.

Well aren’t the people who label themselves as a Sikh yet smoke/drink and whatever else the people doing the beadbi?

So films show something that is real but not what we believe to be a real representation of a Sikh, don’t you think the source of the problem (i.e. the people who label themselves as a Sikh yet smoke/drink) needs to be addressed and educated rather than attempting to control which ‘Sikhs’ are allowed to be portrayed?

There are a number of people who cut their hair who wear a Kara yet when this is shown on screen its wrong but we have people like that in front of us everyday. We have people who cut their hair who wear a Khanda around their neck, but again when this is shown on screen its wrong, why when there are people exactly like that in the real world who say they are Sikh.. When we have these people in the real world why protest when they are shown in the reel world? I’d understand if what they were showing was all lies and that everyone who has the label of a ‘Sikh’ lived like a Sikh, but in reality we all know that’s not true.

Like I said earlier, if an Amritdhari is shown in the wrong way then I agree to protesting against the work, if someone who labels themselves as a Sikh yet drinks/smokes is shown, is that really a lie as far as reality is concerned?

Maybe its time we start to look at why these people are being shown (how many well known Sikh role models are there in this day and age?)

Peace.

the fact of the matter is, is that movies like these encourage children of an impressionable age to think that this is socially acceptable. More over, it is by the <banned word filter activated> parents who will sit down and watch this with their kids. This starts a thread. Before you start defending movies like these, start thinking about the effect media has over people.

Sat Sri Akal:

Both points are valid. The sad tragedy is that the Sikh image portrayed on the screen is drawn from reality as there are many so called Sikhs who do everything opposite of Sikhism. How to stop that...who knows. Guru Mehar Karae.

But at the same token, every public media avenue has a duty to make sure that their media is not going to ridicule or belittle any minority community. Minority communities in any country (and Sikhs are a minority community in India) are especially vulnerable to stereotyping and pigeon-holing in society via the media. Therefore, the media must be doubly careful when addressing these communities.
