Dal Khalsa leader Thekedar shot at in UK

Amritsar, August 14

Separatist Sikh leader Jaswant Singh Thekedar (60), head of the parallel faction of the Dal Khalsa International, was rushed to St Marry Pattingen Hospital in England in serious condition after he was shot at near his house by two youths, one of them a Sikh, last evening.

Thekedar had been declared a Proclaimed Offender and carried a reward of Rs 50,000 after he was accused of throwing parts of cow in temples in Amritsar in 1982. He fled to England via Nepal in 1983.

The Indian Intelligence agencies based in Amritsar and Gurdaspur have sought a detailed report about the incident, as Thekedar is still wanted in a number of cases here.

While, Bhupinder Singh Holland, President International Sikh Youth Federation of Holland, who was present in England at the time of the incident alleged that the assailants were suspected to be hired by Indian agencies, both rival groups of the Dal Khalsa levelled charges against each other.

However, Manmohan Singh, president of the Dal Khalsa, UK, while talking to The Tribune on the phone, condemned the attack and said neither he nor any of his men was involved in the attack.

He claimed that some of the enemies of Thekedar could be behind the incident as he (Thekedar) had earned many enemies in England.

Gajinder Singh, president of the Dal Khalsa and one of the hijackers of an Indian Airlines plane, had expelled him from the organisation in 1986 for his alleged “anti-party” activities.

According to Bhupinder Singh, the car-borne assailants, in their early 20s, had signalled the car of Thekedar to stop near his house at Huston (England) on the pretext of inquiring an address.

When Thekedar lowered the window glass, one of the assailants fired six bullets from his revolver.

Thekedar tried to chase the assailants despite being injured but they managed to escape. Another occupant of Thekedar’s car who had come from Italy to meet him, escaped unhurt.

One of the close confidants of Thekedar, Kewal Singh Dhaliwal told TNS from England that Manmohan Singh had recently threatened Thekedar of dire consequences.

Mr Dhaliwal, however, said Thekedar had identified the assailants and their names would be revealed shortly.

Regardless of this individuals crimes, it does not justify this sort of action or violence, it seems Sikhs in the UK are beginning to adopt the habits of those in Vancouver and pind-based Jats in Punjab.

Also, the issue of Sant Jee being a GOI agent is perhaps a little far fetched, however there is no denying that Congress had a considerable hand in his initial fame, which they tried hard to utilise as ammunition against their Akali political opposition and much in the way of evidence (documented and photographic) links him as canvassing for the earlier congress party members in Punjab – HOWEVER, his latter actions are clear as to what and where he stood on the matter of the GOI and their sustained anti-Sikh roles.

We are certainly not adopting the farcical habits of Canadians.

We have yet to see UK Sikhs going to Punjab and taking extra care when finding spouses to make sure the spouse has 10 sisters they can get into Canada and then once settled the 10 sisters can get the rest of the guys family into Canada.

We have also yet to see UK Sikhs going to Punjab buying a car (usually a well used Sumo in the case of Canadians) and covering it with the Union Jack, (Maple leaf flag in case of Canadians).

Also yet to see a UK Sikh trying to pretend he owns half of Canada whilst sat in KLM economy class eating the in flight meal as if it was the only meal he has had for a few weeks. They usually wear shell suit bottoms and would do most chavs in the UK proud with their dress sense.

The UK Sikhs have a long way to go before we can match the extraordinary habits of our Canadian brothers.

I think I heard Jaswant Singh Thekedar on the radio today accusing police of racism and not actively trying to catch the gunmen. In the news report it was suggested he was targetted because he allowed the SGGS ji to be taken to places serving meat, alcohol, etc.

Others think it could be a personal issue between former ISYF members and his organisation.

At first those around Thekedar suggested it was the work of the GOI. Then someone realised he knew those that shot him.

The first posting - news report states "Mr Dhaliwal, however, said Thekedar had identified the assailants and their names would be revealed shortly."

Why does Thekedar not simply reveal the names so the police can make arrests. It appears he and those around him will go around accusing anyone that he does not like or agree with.

His shooting probably has more to do with his personal dealings - the police are probably aware of the character they are dealing with and realise he has more enemies than friends.

I suspect this is not a SIKH matter, but simply a personal matter involving Thekedar and his dealings.

    • Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.
    • The Mind is Jyot Saroop (Waheguru), but the mind is under the influence of five evils… Through Naam Simran( Rememberance), the mind will begin to detach from evil, and get back to its original form ( MANN TU JYOT SAROOP HEH)… Until the mind breaks free from the five evils, one will go through the cycle of paap and punn….which leads to Karma… Naam Simran destroys past karma, and prevents new karma coming into fruition… I did this, I did that… This non realisation of the Jyot Saroop gives rise to paap and Punn, which in turn gives birth to suffering and misery…
    • I agree we're not born with sin like the Christians think. Also I agree we have effects of karma. But Gurbani does state that the body contains both sin and charity (goodness): ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਈ ॥ Within the body are the two brothers sin and virtue. p126 Actually, we do need to be saved. Gurbani calls this "udhaar" (uplift). Without Satguru, souls are liable to spiritual death: ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਵਸਿ ਕਾਲ ॥ p40 Those who have not met Satguru Purakh are unfortunate and liable to death. So, yeah, we do need to be saved, and Guru ji does the saving. The reason Satguru is the one to save is because God has given Satguru the "key" (kunji): ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥ In the True Guru's hand is the key. None else can open the door. By perfect good fortune the Guru is met. p124
    • That's unfortunate to hear. Could you give any more information? Who was this "baba"? He just disappeared with people's money? Obviously, you should donate your money to known institutions or poor people that you can verify the need of through friends and family in Punjab.
    • Sangat ji,  I know a family who went Sevewal to do seva sometimes end of 2019. They returned last year in great dismay and heart broken.  To repent for their mistakes they approached panj pyaare. The Panj gave them their punishment / order to how t make it up which, with Kirpa, they fulfilled.  They were listening to a fake Baba who, in the end, took all the "Donations " and fled sometime over a year ago. For nearly 4 years this family (who are great Gursikhs once u get to know them) wasted time and effort for this fake Baba. NOT ONLY this one fam. But many, many did worldwide and they took their fam to do seva, in village Sevewal, city Jaitho in Punjab. In the end many families lost money in thousands being behind this Baba. The family, on return, had to get in touch with all the participants and told them to stop.  I am stating this here to create awareness and we need to learn from whom we follow and believe. It's no easy but if we follow the 3 S (Sangat, Simran and Seva) we will be shown the light. As I am writing this the family in question have been doing the same since 2008 onwards and they fell for this Baba... it is unbelievable and shocking.  This am writing in a nutshell as am at work on my break so not lengthy but it deserves a great length.  Especially the family in question, who shed light on youngsters about Sikhi 20 plus years!!
