Chandigarh, May 31

Accusing the Punjab Government of interfering in the religious matters of the Sikhs, president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Paramjit Singh Sarna today said the state government had resorted to pressure tactics to prevent the protest march from Fatehgarh Sahib to Chandigarh.

Addressing media persons at the Chandigarh Press Club, Sarna alleged that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had changed stand from his earlier statements that the state governments should refrain from meddling with religious matters. The heavy deployment of police at Fatehgarh Sahib was testimony to the fact, he added.

Holding the state government responsible for incidents that have taken place during the past 19 days in the wake of the Dera Sacha Sauda row, Sarna alleged no steps had been taken by the government to resolve the issue or to assuage the hurt sentiments of the Sikhs. Even after the dera chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, was booked in a case of hurting religious sentiments by the Punjab police, no serious efforts were made to arrest him. “Taking a moral responsibility the Chief Minister should resign,” he asserted.

He, however, parried media queries on why they had not pursued the matter of hurting religious sentiments in Delhi against the dera chief.

He warned that if no action was taken against the Dera chief, they would gherao the state government in Chandigarh. He also said they had also filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court regarding the CBI inaction in cases seeking the intervention of the apex court to speed up the probe against the dera chief.

Flaying the SGPC, Sarna stated that it had also failed to comply by its earlier decision that an 11-member delegation would hand over memorandums to the Governors of Punjab and Haryana, as they had agreed to handing over the memorandums to a representative of the authorities in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Bhai Jasbir Singh Rode of the Sant Samaj said they would stick to their earlier decisions as per which all Sikh organisations would assemble on June 2 in Ludhiana to chalk out the next course of action. Demanding the arrest the dera chief, he called upon the Sikh organisations to close all deras of the sect in Punjab.

Former secretary of the SGPC Manjit Singh Calcutta said the dera chief should be punished for his act and it was the only way to assuage the sentiments of Sikhs.

Dera Row

Cops were on their toes all through the day

Chandigarh, May 31

The Chandigarh police remained on its toes today in the wake of the expected march of Sikh organisations toward Chandigarh from Fatehgarh Sahib to hand over memorandums to the Governors of Punjab and Haryana.

A heavy deployment of police was seen on all roads leading to the city from Punjab. Police sources said approximately 1600 personnel were deployed in various parts of the city, including around Punjab and Haryana Raj Bhavans.

Nakas were set up on all roads connecting the city to Punjab, which were manned by deputy superintendents of police. The nakas were set up at around 8 am and lifted around 2 pm. However, the traffic flowed smoothly on the roads.

It was around afternoon that the police heaved a sigh of relief when it got information that the protestors had agreed to hand over their memorandums to a representative of the Governor. A team of CID officials of the Chandigarh police, deployed at Fatehgarh Sahib, was giving minute to minute inputs of development occurring at Fatehgarh Sahib.

A team of police personnel led by the Sector 3 police station inspector Ram Gopal remained stationed near both the Raj Bhavans.

London123Home,

"Serves them right!!"

Are you trying to say that the two Sikh riders ( Sukhjinder Singh , and Raja Singh a priest from a priest of Sadda Subh Wala village - -- not Sacha Sauda) who were attached by Dera Sacha Sauda followers and ended up being admitted to the hospital are "served right" (for being Sikhs)?

Are you suggesting that to avoid such attacks from the followers of Sacha Sauda that Sikh should not use Singh and Kaur in their names?

Sorry and humble apologies - I think i read the post in haste and assumed that the "Mistaking two motorcycle-borne Sikhs as protesters" were dera pakhandi baba followers. !!! Oops Silly me!.

As we know "Sikh" with turbans and with Singh and Kaur suffix have joined Deras run by fake baba's hence my comment and therefore they cant be Sikhs anymore.

SEDITION CASE

It's unconstitutional & illegal, says Mann

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Jalandhar: Terming the sedition case registered against him and 20

others "illegal and unconstitutional" Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president

Simranjit Singh Mann has tried to highlight the alleged paradoxical

approach of state government in his case and that of Dera Sacha Sauda head.

"The SAD-BJP government seems to be considering slain chief minister

Beant Singh greater than tenth Sikh Guru Gobind Singh. This is evident

from the fact that for putting placards with photos of Dilawar Singh on the

statue of Beant Singh, I was charged with sedition and have been lodged

in jail, but the government was doing little to arrest Sirsa Dera head

though he had hurt the sentiments of Sikhs by imitating Guru Gobind Singh,"

Mann told mediapersons on Friday when he was produced here in a local court,

which extended his and others judicial custody till June 14. Many

supporters led by senior party leaders had gathered in the court complex.

Mann alleged that the case against him was registered under pressure

from Congress leaders Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Shamsher Singh Dullo.

Meanwhile, Mann and his counsel KS Hundal gave a tough time to the

prosecution as the latter prayed for extension of judicial custody in

the court of duty magistrate Amrish Kumar Jain. Hundal pointed out that even from

the facts mentioned by police in FIR case of sedition was not made out

against Mann and others.

While Mann, who argued better part of his case, pointed out various

illegalities when he was remanded to judicial custody on May 14 or on

May 18 when he was booked under sedition case. He even submitted a 11-page

hand-written complaint addressed to the sessions judge. He alleged that

neither they were provided food and water nor were their kin informed

by police and on the both occasions they were denied the right to be

represented by the lawyer.

Legal lacuna

*In his complaint to sessions judge, Mann alleged that on May 14 they

were held but were nor produced in the open court of SDM Bhupinder Singh.

Theywere rather brought to police station at 7.45 pm where he was produced

before a "Kangaroo court", which remanded them to judicial custody.

Mann being produced in the court in Jalandhar on Saturday.

Dera chief’s arrest

Sant Samaj goes soft, SAD(A) sticks to hard line

Vimal Sumbly

Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, June 2

The Gurmat Sidhant Pracharak Sant Samaj today served an ultimatum on the Central, Punjab and Haryana governments for arresting Dera Sacha Sauda head baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by June 18, failing which it will launch a peaceful protest by courting arrest.

On the other hand, the SAD(A) stuck to its hardline stance, saying that in case the baba was not arrested it would ensure that the Akal Takht hukamnama was implemented in letter and spirit.

The two organisations held simultaneous meetings less than a kilometer apart along the Ferozepur road. While the Sant Samaj held its meeting on the premises of Gurdwara Nanaksar, Ferozepur road, the SAD (A) held its meeting at the party office near Circuit House. Interestingly, both organisations had called a press conference 3 pm. The timing was later rescheduled.

Sant Samaj headed by Bhai Harnam Singh, who is also the chief of the Damdami Taksal, said only sants would participate in the protest. Accompanied by Baba Harbhajan Singh of Nanaksar Karelanwalay and Bhai Hari Singh Randhawaywale, Bhai Harnam Singh had called the meeting today to chalk out the strategy to be adopted to enforce the hukamnama.

He said the meeting took exception to the delaying tactics of the Punjab and Haryana governments in taking action against the dera head.

On the other hand, the SAD(A) at its political affairs committee meeting decided to hold a conclave of leaders and representatives of various panthic organisations on June 4 at Gurdwara Model Town here to chalk out the future course of action.

He blamed the Central government for delaying the completion of the CBI investigation against the baba on the charges of rape and murder.

Bathinda, June 8

The house of Rajinder Singh Sidhu, on whose complaint a criminal case was registered against Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, head, Dera Sacha Sauda, was attacked by certain persons late last night.

Rajinder fired two shots in the air and challenged the attackers, who fled after Rajinder challenged them. Before fleeing, they, who were four in number and had come on two scooters, smashed the panes of his car and windows of his house.

Acting promptly on the complaint of Rajinder, the district police provided him with seven gunmen. While five would guard his house at Hazura Kapura Colony here, two had been given to him for his personal security.

A report was registered at the city police station under Section 427, IPC, in this regard. A delegation of various Sikh organisations met district police chief Nau Nihal Singh, urging him to nab the culprits at the earliest.

Recollecting the event, Rajinder said he came to his house around 11 pm. He said one of the attackers abused him and then started pelting his house with stones.

Meanwhile, a section of SGPC officials recorded their statements with the police in connection with the criminal case registered against the baba.
