I was talking to a very spiritual Gursikh who i have always had ALOT of respect for. The topic about Jathabandis came up and he said something so beautiful, and i wanted to share it with the Sangat...

He said that people get involved in their 'jathas' and they get absorbed in them, and they never see the 'big picture'...He then said, if you ask a True Gursikh, "What Jatha are you a part of?" or, "Who is in your jatha?", his answer should be...

"The whole world is my jatha, because i see God in everyone"

i LOVE that answer. fantastic. ;) if only everyone was as broadminded as that gursikh....then we would have no problems getting ourselves united. :(^_^

define united:

everyone practising sikhi in the exact same way?

or everyone being tolerant of each other, so long as they're practising sikhi positively?

is the answer at this point in time destroying all jathas? or actually learning and adapting to the fact that different jathay have different strong and weakpoints. doesn't this variety in essence make us stronger, so long as we can be happy with each other?

I don't think that there is anything wrong with anyone saying they belong to or follow a certain jatha. Why do jathas even exist in Sikhi? The reason being that not everyone follows Sikhi the same way or at the same level. Or the reason is that in the mainstream Sikhi is decliing and Jathas are formed to keep those that follow it fully in a group so that they don't become diluted in the mainstream.

Just some thoughts.

I guess it is no surprise that akjforever would show up in this topic... ;)

Personally, I don't see, and I think no one else should see a Jatha as any separate entity. Cause take a look at Christianity: their jathas slowly turned into different relgions completely - Lutherism, Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, etc. If you start by segregating Sikhs into different kinds of sikhs, you fall into the same trap, when someday someone asks you "What religion are you" and you instinctively don't say sikh... you say 'akj' or something :( ;)

good point... that's an opinion we haven't seen before, actually.. that makes some sense.

but don't get me wrong when i make the following comparison, i'm not trying to badmouth sikhi in any way.

when bacteria form inside a body, they are to be fought with anti biotics. however, even bacteria slowly becomes immune to antibiotics, for it builds an immunity. It's the same with new species of insects and such. When they go through trouble, some of them can build an immunity, and thus the species as a whole becomes stronger. This is why the theory of evolution makes so much sense, because as the "apes" faced more and more troubles, they evolved and changed to become more immune to the problems in the world. hence the change from apes into humans. same goes with bacteria and new species.

now, don't you think that we could view these different jathas in the same way? i mean.... where one has a weakness, that jatha which is strong would still "carry the load", so to speak.. does this make sense, or am i just sounding like an <banned word filter activated> hahaha. i don't mean to change the original topic too much. but that's a thought that occured to me when i was inconversation with a gursikh the other day.

i had no intention to insult sikhi in any way, and i hope i haven't done so with my comparison. I'm looking forward to some other opinions though. Let's try to keep this toned down so we don't have to lock this thread

Well Japman, although your analogy is sorta questionable, you do make a lot of sense. But if we continue with that analogy... :T:

Q:How do insects and bacteria become resistant?

A: They mutate.

Q: So what?

A: That is how speciation occurs!! (Mutations accumulated over time results in new species, and analogously, that is how jathas will "evolve" into new "religions" on their own.

This is mearly an observation. I have seen that many times, some individuals part of certain jathas are closed minded towards other members of other jathas. They treat them as having ruined the spirit of sikhi by simply associating with them. To stretch the analogy even further, what happens when two organisms can no longer associate with one another (ie: mate?) A: Speciation and the separation of jathas into religions of their own. As you can see, this is happening already, although at a very minor level.

Just something to think about :T:
