Off Licence's Owned By Amritdhari's

The family is thinking of buying an off licence and we've been shopping around and doing some market research etc. We found that for the buisness to be viable one has to sell alcohol and ciggies, in some places it makes up 80-90% of what the shop takes in.

So theres a BIG discussion as to wether its acceptable for a Sikh to be selling such items? and if we say no it isnt then should we also stop selling meat products and other non-veggie products? That would clear out 50% of what people expect to see in shops...what about newspapers that have kaami pictures.

So basically; can a Sikh family sell such things within a shop?

You may know of the infamous Johal's of Southall - Johal Wine Store ''Amritdharis'' part of Sohi 's corrupt Gurdwara commitee,they have several alcohol stores - this is wrong being amritdhari and selling this kind of stuff,- do what Guru would do

I think if times are hard and you have to do it for your families survival, then maybe its ok. I know first hand how it can be. But i think if you are healthy with enough to get by in your life, then dont buy one. You will have to touch n sell meat, cigs and booze on a daily basis... not to mention stuff like lottery and scratch cards which is a form of gambling.

Best to steer clear from it and not put yourself in that kind of position anyway.

Wasnt Bhagat Tarlochan a butcher? surley if Guruji decided to include his Bani itno Guru Sahib, then we should learn from this. If the person has to make a living let it be as long as they themeselves do not drink or smoke it should be fine

OK, he was butcher, but to be fair - having an off-license is not the only way to make a living nowawadays is it? Why not open a sweet shop instead or something along those lines? Not all newspapers and mags are covered in porn etc.

The Singh that used to have a shop across the road from our house only sold bread, milk, yoghurt, butter and vegetables (as food),

He didnt sell ciggs or alcohol,

He sold lots of yummy sweets though - like an old fashioned tuc shop,

i think the real question here is why people separate "life" from "faith" i mean............to go around as an amritdhari and then say "well i need to survive, so im gonna open an off license"

All we need is faith in Waheguru and he'll will sort the rest out................its more about letting go of the "need" to survive and when u give ur head to Guru Jee you also giving him ur everything so why do we think he gonna abandon us?

I advise to stay well away from opening an off licence, we should be setting an example not selling paap to people.

I will share an experience my "aunti ji" had but obviously will not use names and wont go into too much detail as itll take me hours to write the whole story.

Basically my moms good friend owned an off licence which also sold meat in the 90s however they were Gurmukhs. After a few years aunti ji developed a illness and could no longer serve at the shop, she used to go hospital for regular check ups but they couldnt tell what was wrong with her but just advised she should just stay in bed and "take these pills".

So her husband lets call him "uncle ji" was forced to run the shop on his own and he wasnt really managing well with looking after the shop and his sick wife, he was getting kinda stressed out. One evening i think it was around 6ish, a few jaam doot was standing at the bedroom door of aunti ji's bedroom, straight away she started doing naam simran after a while she opened her eyes and they was still there at the door. She started screaming and uncle ji came upstairs and was like whats going on, she said theirs jaam at the door but uncle ji couldnt see them, then she couldnt breath proply so uncle ji called a ambulance.

When the ambulance came the jaam followed her and she said when she was looking out of the back windown of the ambulance the jaam was leaping over cars at a very fast speed following her.

The jaam stayed with her all the time at her stay in the hospital, uncle ji did ardaas and asked why was this happening and why are the jaam there, he got darshaan (from which Guru Ji i dont know as he wanted to keep it gupt) and Guru Ji said close down your shop immeaditely and just concentrate on your jeevan.

So they did straight away, she got better and now shes alive and kicking, caning seva and simran. It was a blessing that they experienced this as not all Amritdharis who own off licences get the warning until its too late.

That was a VERY inspirational story!!

I think the message of this thread is far simpler...if you are AmrtiDhari...if you avoid alcohol and meat...why on earth would you want to promote others to eat meat and drink alcohol?????

It's like if you a policeman or woman...upholding the law when you are at work, but when you get home you help you mates take part in drug dealing, theft, robbery..etc etc etc.

It comes down to double standards....
