An Indian general and his wife were followed before his throat was slashed with a knife in London's West End, Southwark Crown Court has heard.

Lieutenant-General Kuldeep Singh Brar, 78, needed surgery after the attack in Old Quebec Street on 30 September.

Mandeep Singh Sandhu, 34, from Birmingham and Dilbag Singh, 36, from London, deny wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

Harjit Kaur, 38, of west London, also denies the charge.

A fourth person, Barjinder Singh Sangha, 33, of Wolverhampton, has previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. A fourth man is still at large, the court heard.

'Extremists' target'

Prosecutor Annabel Darlow said the victim was deliberately attacked because of his role in the Indian army's attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar in 1984.

The Golden Temple is one of the holiest Sikh shrines and Operation Blue Star was aimed at flushing out Sikh separatists who were sheltering there. Hundreds of civilians were killed during the assault.

Lt Gen Brar was on a holiday in London with his wife Meena and the pair were walking back to the Mostyn Hotel in Bryanston Street when he was targeted.

He had to be treated for deep cuts to his face and neck.

Ms Darlow said: "Mr Brar is now retired but during his career as a general in the Indian Army oversaw a number of military operations which have made him a target for Sikh extremist groups.

"This was no random attack. This was a highly premeditated assault by people who thought about what they were doing and planned it."

The jury heard that when the defendants found out Lt Gen Brar was on a private holiday in London with no security, they made two reconnaissance missions over two days to check out his movements.

On the night of the attack Ms Kaur tailed the Indian general and his wife, following them into a casino and then a restaurant, the court heard.

'Not forgotten'

She also got onto a bus with the couple.

Ms Darlow said: "She played a crucial role, silently and unobtrusively following this couple who were unaware they were being followed by a woman who was relaying information to four men that were bent on attacking Brar."

Nrs Brar, who spotted the men just before the attack, told her husband they "looked frightening and they looked like a threat".

Lt Gen Brar was ambushed by a gang of four men as the couple made their way back to the hotel.

"Sangha grabbed Mrs Brar by the throat and threw her against a wall. She started to scream very loudly and called for help," Ms Darlow said.

"General Brar was fighting as hard as he could to defend himself."

As the attackers fled, one of them dropped his mobile phone giving police important clues about the attackers.

The victim has survived several assassination attempts and still receives death threats, as the military operation "has not been forgotten", the court heard.

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also assassinated in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star.

The trial continues.

Although it is wrong to attack someone like this, perhaps in this instance he did deserve it, rather than facing karma. IMO he's a fake Sikh. I bet he would have been killed for refusing to carry out 'operation blue star', rather than being a coward for the money and honour and disrespecting what his forefathers fought for. He wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them.

And also the media is yet again bending our panth trying to make us out as 'extremists', while asslicking islam. Yes there probably are a few extremists in all religions. But all in all I think the majority of Sikh people despise of him and have every right to do so, although I try not to get involved in politics myself.

I can't believe India's favourite general isn't living in India. What is he doing in UK? I guess Indian government got what they wanted out of him and decided to kick him out. I wonder what will happen if Brar tried to come to Canada.

Initially when the attack was first reported I thought maybe they chanced on Brar in London. So they followed him for days and only managed to give him a shave. What a bunch of clowns.

something not right 4 men and a woman and he only gets cuts, either he is a real good fighter for his age or the attackers were really weak, or it never happened, which is what i believe, come on four drawn shri sahibs thrust at him at least one would have finished him (mores the pity). No when Singhs get hold of him he will be done well and truly! :angry2:

I agree with this opinion... Looking at all aspect of the so-called attack on Gen. Brar, it becomes more and more apparent that this just seems like some sort of Stunt, to tarnish the image of the Sikh.

Bearing in mind, at the time of the attack.... Sikhs were in the media in a very positive light.. With the recognition all around the world, from USA drawing the flags to half-mast after the Gurdwara shooting, to the parliamentary debate in UK for Bhai Rajoana and Prof Bhullar. I get the feeling that this was designed to try to revert the media back to the old ways of 'Sikhs are terrorists .. Etc'

The only way to be sure if this is in fact some GOI conspiracy isn't to be scrutinizing Brar, it's to find out all information historical and otherwise about these accused. Who are they? Where are they from? Are they known to their communities? If there's holes in their history as "Kaurs" and "Singhs", that string would unravel a GOI plot. (Mod Cut)

What I want to know is why the British auithorities didnt bar his entry to the united kingdom and why Sikh organisations have not sought assurances from the UK govt such controversial war criminal indian govt state terrorist people are not allowed into the country. In canada they barred indian punjab police members few years back for war crimes.

And UK govt barred 2 EDL supporting american white jewish people who preached against Islam and islamic fascism recently but they didnt even kill anyone and they got barred entry. Yet this dog this terrorist general brar is allowed go to any country he wishes? Shame on any civilised democratic govt that allows entry to such people. Shame on us if we allow such people into the country without protesting making our feelings known to members of parliament and the British establishment.

Btw general brar, it turns out he is part and parcel of the Indian mafia corrupt union. He is ceo of a major industrial company in India so any profit that company makes makes him and his corrupt family wealthy. So while he and his family live in relative comfort there are thousands of Sikhs (many innocent worshippers) who have lost their lives and their families have suffered for decades directly from his and his armed units hands.

So you may ask why is a so called Sikh general going against his religion and carrying out such a heinous terrorist sacrilegious attack as in operation blue star in 1984. The answers is pretty simple its money he has a stake in Indian economy with his various companies and if he had not carried out the orders of Indira gandhi chances are he would not have allowed to run those companies and he would have lost all his financial assets. This is how the corrupt regime works over there in India the indian army generals are given a stake so that they do not turn against the govt no matter how bad their politics or orders maybe.
