Yea, I'm not too familiar with how things are across the pond.

I do know a Gora Singh in the UK who recently took Amrit after a few years of learning about Sikhi, he said it would put him in a dilemma on what box should he tick.

It's these type of situations, where a non-Punjabi Sikh has to do the census where it gets confusing.

sikhs are a different culture even from punjabis , I see this box as an uniting factor above race and nationality as white, black, chinese, japanese, etc sikhs will be ik jut under Guru ji remember we eschew our previous loyalities when we submit to Guru ji

for those who don't get it :

a malaysian sikh ticks malayasian/south asian  box and automatically is assumed to be either muslim like the majority population or racially malay

an indian sikh ticks indian also disappears to be assumed to be in the hindu count  or an indigenous other

in the uk census we have the choice to be clumped in to 'other' and disappear  or Indian and disappear

What makes you guys think sikhs are any different than jews when it comes to ethnic-regional identity ??

For vast majority of indians , sikh = punjabi and punjabi = sikh !

I have been asked "he's punjabi , but he doesn't wear turban , why?" when infact the person in question is hindu . But for most indians and even outside, punjabi = sikh and sikh = punjabi.

This is a mindset deeply etched even in the minds of sikhs for obvious reasons : our religion was born and grew in punjab. We're tied to punjab as much as jews are to israel or more !

Afghani sikhs Pakistani sikhs white sikhs will all tick the sikh option

This is perfect    it will show we have our own identity and will unite us too   it will help tackle the caste issue as well.

3 haha reacts are by traitors who don't wish to see sikhs getting united

By this logic, there should be no problem putting Punjabi as an option. This option is technically sound and rational.

Putting Sikh has no basis

Look at the last Census, where does it have for example, Jew? It doesn't. Arab makes sense as it is a certain people from a geographical location.

Putting "Punjabi" under C is what we should be advocating for.

then how would you differentiate between punjabi muslims/hindus in that count?
