Left-leaning, globalist types? Because I doubt the right-wing, pro-Nationalist types are leaving. Don't think for a moment that the latter category is exclusively populated by the easily-riled, semi-literate villagers. There are many die-hard "Bharat" sorts in the celebrity class. Whether it's genuine or they're leaned on by Indian politicians and in-betweens to make their pro-Indian views public, is up for debate.

Nothing surprising there. Central and Eastern India have always been dirt poor - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha.

Even a few  hundred years ago?

Weren't there many well-educated and wealthy (and still are) Muslims who went to Pakistan from UP (Muhajirs) ?

Punjab needs to industrialise as soon as possible. It cannot rely on just farming.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I remember hearing somewhere that there were proposals about industries in Punjab several times, but the Indian government rejected them.

Our own lot have screwed them up majorly as well. Apparently some well established European car manufacturer wanted to open a plant in India. They came to one place down south, and to Panjab. The southerners sent suited and booted fellows, and apnay sent the 'kurtay pajamay wallay' (I presume these to be some SGPC functionaries). You can guess who got the contract........
