Drivers dropping off passengers at Heathrow Airport will now be charged £5 as part of new rules that come into force today (1 November). But there is a way around it if you have slightly more time on your hands. Here's all you need to know.

From 1 November, drivers entering the passenger drop-off areas at Heathrow will be required to pay £5, even if they only briefly enter the designated areas. Heathrow is the last major airport in the UK to introduce such a charge, which the airport says is part of a long-term sustainability strategy.

The drop-off areas are located just outside the terminal and allow drivers to set down passengers about fly. Drivers entering the zones must now pay the £5 charge on the day or by 11.59pm the following day, otherwise they will be liable for an £80 fine. Drivers can also pay in advance.

Owning a car, the cost of running it, and going anywhere in it is starting to become a pain in the backside. They really don't want the little people having access to flexible means of just being able to travel. I understand about the upkeep of infrastructure and the rest of it, but c'mon, they're always looking to start charging for things that were never a problem.

I have to change my car now because it's not ULEZ compliant. You're right, these things affect the majority non wealthy more than anyone else

It's called the war on the motorist. The stress of trying to find parking, traffic cameras everywhere, stupid cycle lanes turning the main road into just two narrow lanes, low traffic neighbourhoods, which only allow access for those who live on these roads thus forcing drivers onto an already traffic jammed main road. Those in power are intent on forcing the motorist to ditch their cars and get on bicycles or public transport.

Considering there are nearly 40 million cars in the UK so that means that nearly every adult in the UK is a car owner and driver, it is surprising that they allow small vested interests like the climate change fanatics to force through such policies which make the life of the average car driver hell.

It's strange, I thought there'd be more money to be made from allowing cars rather than bikes. Bikes don't even need road tax payments.

It is not about the environment , its about eroding the choices of the poor and middle classes about being able to afford travel both within the country and abroad . Look at the private companies who own and price train fares , the prices are high as or higher than airfares . Bus companies do not cover rural routes in a normal way , many neighbourhoods do not have transport links anymore .

If the poor cannot afford to maintain a car it affects their job opportunities , social lives and necessary trips.

What do you think is the underlying motivation for this ?
