I think we have to stop being like abrahamic religions about diet.  They believe there is only way of doing things, we should be wise enough to realize that it's rarely the case in this vast world.  I think that is why even Guru Nanak Dev ji did not take a stand on gurbani on the meat issue.  

However, I do think going the western way and having meat for breakfast lunch and dinner is terrible.  Like most ancient peoples meat was once a while thing.  When you got around to hunting or when you decided it was time to sacrifice the animal you were raising since infancy.  Usually done in winter,  when other food sources were scarce. 

Also, the more North you go, diet is more likely to contain coffee alcohol and meat. The more tropical the more fruits veggies and grains. Ayurvedically this makes sense.  Also our genes play a role.  There was a study that people from South India lack certain enzymes so that if they eat meat, it's more likely to store saturated fat and give heart attacks etc. 

However I do think eating meat does affect us spirtually.  That is why most samparda are against it.  Only those that are about war like Nihangs are on with it.  And that's great, when the time comes to fight, it would be good to have some Sikhs who know how to prepare meat and which parts are good to eat.  I don't even know how to cook an egg.  And cooking meat is a lot more fraught with danger.  It can easily go rancid,  or make you sick if under cooked or easily cause food poisoning.  There was a granth I think prem sumarg(  not sure tho) that listed the types of fish ok for khalsa to eat. Which types of meat are dangerous (dead animals etc) 

However when most Sikhs are told meat is ok, they start eating McDonald's and the terrible factory farmed meat. Which is very very harmful. At least the vegetarian panjabis are saved from the terrible disease of the west like colon cancer. Same thing with saying Marijuana is ok. Sikh Kids have starting using edibles and junk like that.

That's why I think certain granths, philosophies and habits were restricted or kept hidden with certain jathas. So they could be properly imparted and done under supervision. When democracy or the masses get hold of something it's destroyed or wrong fully misused. 

So a nanny state and a sanitized version of things is important. Real seekers can find the real answers themselves.

There is another dimension to hunting animals.

Western Sikhs haven't experienced hunger and poverty.

I live in punjab but hv my agricultural farm in UP near Nepal border. There is a lot of forest area there.

Poor Hindus and Muslims there struggle for 2 meals a day. Muslims do hunting to provide adequate food for their family.

Even vegetarian Hindus hv started to hunt and their kids get good food and are healthier and stronger.

Its easy for vegetarian Sikhs to sit in a comfortable house and talk about vegetarianism.

Real world is different. Hunger is still a big issue for millions and millions of people.

We hv almost zero forest cover in punjab. Our future generations will pay the price for it.

Even Rajasthan a desert has more forest cover.

Had Sikhs been doing shikaar, we would have had much greater forest cover in punjab. Plus Sikhs would hv been much better trained in using guns and weapons and would not hv been beaten up by shiv Sena gundaas or ram rahim chellaas.

Horse is herbivorous and is most kaami.

Lion is carnivorous and is least kaami.

Just to add 1 more thing.

In the area around my farm,Punjabis of which many are vegetarian are quite prosperous and hv electric wire fence or sharp wire fence around their farm to stop animals from spoiling their crop.

This wire hurts many animals.

So vegetarians being compassionate to animals is a myth.

Vegetarian farmers do so much spray on their crop and kill not only pests but billions of Non harmful organisms.

If vegetarian farmers are given freedom, they will cut whatever forest they see and increase their agricultural land and become big sardaars.

Cutting a forest results in death of millions of organisms and animals and for many animals it's a terrible death.

This is the problem with vegetarian Sikhs of today.

If you show them some evidence that meat was touched or even eaten by Singhs in the past, they will totally ignore it and even try to do some insult of the person showing evidence.

With such an attitude for fellow Sikhs, no doubt we might physically attack each other in future.

I see it coming.

I hv been told by a Singh of a jatha that they are secretly storing weapons for a future clash with another samparda.

@shastarSinghjee, if more Sikhs in Panjab were even half as intelligent or knowledgable about Sikhi, Itihaas and current affairs, Sikhs would be in much better position politically and for the future

You could help the 'lost' jatts as well, who have gone away from Sikhi

GURUDWARA SHRI CHARAN KAMAL SAHIB is situated in Village Naraina, Teh Dudu, Distt Jaipur, Rajasthan.

 SHRI GURU GOBIND SINGH JI came here while travelling from Talwandi Sabo to Nanded Sahib. GURU SAHIB came here via Sirsa, Nohar, Sahwa etc.

At the request of Mahant Jait Ram Ji of GURU SAHIB Dadu Samparda, he came here with the Sangat and stayed for 13 days. GURU SAHIB bowed his bow to Dadu's mausoleum. Along with GURU SAHIB, the Sikhs inquired about the fact that according to Gurmat it was not allowed to bow down in front of any Samadh and punished GURU SAHIB for this mistake.

GURU SAHIB gladly accepted the Hukam of the Khalsa and by praised that the Khalsa has fulfilled its duty according to Gurmat and has succeeded in this test. Apart from this, GURU SAHIB created a miracle that his falcon keeping in mind the sentiments of Mahant Jait Ram ji accepted bajra food.
