Sikhs fight for space on British census By Deccan Chronicle Correspondent Mar 01 2010 London, Feb. 28: British Sikhs are considering taking legal action against the UK statistics authority over the 2011 census form. The Sikh organisations in the UK are lobbying to get the Sikhs recognised in the census as an ethnic category. The Sikh Federation, which is taking lead in the campaign, wants a box for Sikhs to be included in the ethnicity section apart from the section on religion. “Sikhs have been legally recognised as an ethnic group in this country, so it is baffling that they have not been included in the ethnicity section,” the Sikh Federation co-chair, Mr Jagtar S…

FURIOUS Sikh groups have slammed the government over rules being drawn up on where they can wear their religious symbols. Sikh Federation (UK) and Sikhs in England claim the idea for a code of practice was raised in Parliament in 2005, but the final draft has only just been finished. The groups allege they have been left out of discussions on drafting the document, and the guidelines only cover wearing the kirpan in government buildings. The Kirpan Draft Document stresses the importance of wearing the small ceremonial dagger, and will be sent to government departments and businesses. But the groups are concerned that because it does not include other symbols, there c…

I think most of what passes for Panjabi 'culture' these days is a bunch of retarded, backwards pendu buckwas with little to no depth. So I'm just posting this folk-song, which to me represents a very powerful cultural message. Even if the singer (Kuldeep Manak) did sing his fair share of casteist kanjar poona geets. I strongly recommend people analyse the lyrics. Tune sounds best with big bass (maybe get your headphones on?) It's sort of anti-rapist and gangster at the same time. lol I hope some of you enjoy.

SO a quick question. Why does the intermediate link go to a jatha based yotube page with jatha biased views? Would it not be better to go towards a link like Nanak Naam which the whole sikh sangat can go to, something the whole sikh sangat can agree on instead of doing the jatha bias this website is still known for?? Gurmat Bibek youtube can be weird sometimes, and just lack any enthusiasm compared to basics of sikhi and nanak naam! Seriously why don't they smile on that channel, why is there a lack of glow on their faces that normal human beings have, I have so many questions??!! I can't take them seriously, they look they are going to cry any sec…

Surprising, but oh well, good news if the survey was done properly. SUMMARY Around 82 per cent Sikh youngsters pray regularly or sometimes even if there is no festival being celebrated. The corresponding figure was 74 per cent for Christians, 72 per cent for Muslims, 69 per cent for Hindus and 46 per cent for others. Around 86 per cent Sikh youngsters visited a place of worship (gurudwara) even when there was no festival, compared to 57 per cent each for Hindus and Christians and 56 per cent for Muslims. The share of Sikh youth drawn towards TV channels showing religious programming has gone up from the previous round of the survey, which is opposi…

One of the things that fascinate me about how Banda Singh Bahadhur is how from being a reclusive ascetic and cutting himself from the rest of the world to joining Dashmesh Pita and engaging with the world. And by doing so, he erupted and made the Mughals shudder. I think that at some level I can understand the appeal of being a recluse where you just want to get away from the world and just engage in your own spiritual journey. But the world comes knocking at your door and you have no choice but to join the rest of the world. I think to a large degree many of us Sikhs want to be left alone and be like Madho Das but we have to live in this world and do what must…
