  3. Meh, don't trust him anyway. We're all related to Guru Nanak Dev Ji's physical form (all life on Earth is related), so whatever. The Guru took Guru Angad Dev Ji as his own, he didn't favour his own sons. What makes this guy think he is special? Guru Gobind Singh straight up said we're all his sons and daughters. Also: some long <banned word filter activated> advert at the start.

  4. BBC NEWS Top Tory axed over Army race row A Tory MP has been forced to quit his frontbench role after making comments on race in the Army which party leader David Cameron called "unacceptable". Shadow homeland security spokesman Patrick Mercer said he had met "a lot" of "idle and useless" ethnic minority soldiers who used racism as a "cover". The former officer also told the Times that being called a "black <admin-profanity filter activated>" was a normal part of Army life. But Mr Mercer later said he "deeply" regretted any "offence" he had caused. 'Way it is' Of the English-born black men he knew in the Army, he told the Times: "They prospered inside my regiment, but if you'd said to them: 'Have you ever been called a nigger,' they would have said: 'Yes.' "But equally, a chap with red hair, for example, would also get a hard time - a far harder time than a black man, in fact." What I have said is clearly misjudged and I can only apologise if I have embarrassed in any way those fine men whom I commanded Patrick Mercer Conservative MP Mr Mercer, MP for Newark, added: "But that's the way it is in the Army. If someone is slow on the assault course, you'd get people shouting: 'Come on you fat <admin-profanity filter activated>, come on you ginger <admin-profanity filter activated>, come on you black <admin-profanity filter activated>.'" He also said: "I came across a lot of ethnic minority soldiers who were idle and useless, but who used racism as cover for their misdemeanours. "I remember one guy from St Ann's (Nottingham) who was constantly absent and who had a lot of girlfriends. "When he came back one day I asked him why, and he would say: 'I was racially abused.' And we'd say: 'No you weren't, you were off with your girlfriends again.'" After the comments were published, Mr Mercer was asked by his party to resign his frontbench position and did so. 'Not tolerated' Mr Cameron said: "The comments made by Patrick Mercer are completely unacceptable and I regret that they were made. "We should not tolerate racism in the Army or in any walk of life. Patrick Mercer is no longer a shadow minister." He also said: "I was completely shocked when I read the remarks of Patrick Mercer." He added that "racism is disgusting and has no part in any part of our society". Labour MP Sadiq Khan said: "I find these comments shocking and most members of the public will find them outrageous." But Leroy Hutchinson, a black former corporal who served with Mr Mercer for 12 years, said: "He never tolerated racism in the battalion and not a single one of his men would consider him to be racist." Mr Hutchinson told the BBC: "In the forces... name-calling - whether you be black, white, ginger, red, brown - it is part of the establishment." He added: "It's not meant and it doesn't come across from an individual as a racist comment. It's just part of the culture. "When you wear that uniform, it is what goes on and it's been happening for a long, long time." 'Privilege' In a statement, Mr Mercer said: "The offence I have obviously caused is deeply regretted. "I had the privilege to command soldiers from across the East Midlands of whom many came from racial minorities. "It was a matter of great pride to me that racial minorities prospered inside the unit, and, indeed at one stage all of my company sergeant majors were black. "What I have said is clearly misjudged and I can only apologise if I have embarrassed in any way those fine men whom I commanded. "I have no hesitation in resigning my frontbench appointment." They have been doing preparations for this show since last year and have spend good money for the preparations. They are getting some harassing calls from our community as well against the show...People from COMMUNITY are also making inappropriate calls to the EVENT VENUE MANAGEMENT as well.... We need your INPUT On this, What do you suggest on this? As mentioned before , we have NOTHING against them and are positive about them that they are organizing this event in a non-alcoholic environment unlike SIKH GAMES. However we definitely believe that JAZZY B should be made answerable on this. At the same time, we request the COMMUNITY not to make any harassing calls to Rangla Punjab Concerts Group Organizers. Our Actions should be to create awareness against these SOLD SINGERS in a way which does not create BAD IMAGE to our Own Community in Australia. #SinghStation

While the present government cannot in any way be held responsible for support given by a predecessor government of 30 years ago, the present government’s statement that the assistance then given was ‘only minimal’, was deeply hurtful to Sikhs, and insensitive to others concerned with human rights”, a press release by Network of Sikh Organizations (NSO) notes. “The same seeming indifference to Sikh human rights was also evident in the House of Lords during questions on the UK government’s advocacy of a UN led investigation into human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. Director NSO, Lord Singh asked Baroness Warsi, the Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, if the UK government would consider supporting a similar investigation into the highly organised mass killing of thousands of Sikhs in 1984” the press release reads further. Lord Indarjit Singh [File Photo] Lord Inderjit Singh cited evidence from the American Embassy in New Delhi that the number of Sikhs killed in just three days in 1984 exceeded the total number of victims of General Pinochet’s cruel and arbitrary seventeen year rule in Chile. Baroness Warsi declined to answer the question, saying instead, that she had spent ‘an hour and a half’ in a meeting with the Sikh community. Following discussions in the NSO and with other Sikh organisations, Lord Singh was asked to pursue the point and ask the UK government to show the same degree of commitment in addressing Sikh human rights, as they were showing in addressing human rights abuses against the Tamil population of Sri Lanka. As per NSO press release: Lord Singh accordingly put a written question to Baroness Warsi, again raising the apparent lack of even-handedness. Baroness Warsi again gave a response which totally ignored the question. Lord Singh complained to House of Lords officials who agreed that his question had not been answered, and the Minister was formally requested to respond to Lord Singh’s original question. During Questions on 26th March Adam Holloway MP asked the Prime Minister what more could be done to justice for the appalling events at Amritsar thirty years ago. In his reply the Prime Minister acknowledged the continuing hurt to the Sikh community and described the events of 1984 as ‘a stain on the post-independence history of India’. He continued: ‘we cannot interfere in the Indian justice system, nor should we’. “As British citizens, we are entitled to a clear answer to the question put by Lord Singh, ‘why is it fine for our government to concern itself with human rights abuse in Sri Lanka but wrong for similar concern to be shown to Sikhs in India?’ Are Sikhs lesser human beings?” reads NSO press release. The Prime Minister concluded his reply with an all too familiar patronising comment: ‘The most important thing we can do in this country is celebrate the immense contribution that British Sikhs make to our country…’ According to NSO: The contribution detailed by the Prime Minister failed to mention the most important contribution Sikhs to society, whether here or in India. That is, in the spirit of our Gurus’ teachings, a total commitment to human rights, not only of Sikhs, but of all peoples everywhere. The true message of Baisakhi is that we should always be ready to stand up and be counted in our concern for the human rights of all people whatever the cost. It is a commitment that cost our 9th Guru, Guru Teg Bahadur his life defending the right of Hindus to worship in the manner of their choice against Mughal persecution. It is the same commitment that led to the 1984 genocide against Sikhs for their earlier opposition to the three year dictatorship of Mrs Gandhi. “We believe that it will be a betrayal of still grieving families in India, for UK Sikhs to participate in a UK government celebration that not only ignores their trauma and suffering, but also ignores the underlying commitment to human rights central to the festival of Baisakhi” reads press release by NSO. NSO has urged all Sikhs to boycott the Downing Street function as a charade that ignores the very meaning of Baisakhi.

  9. An application went in to Bradford Council regarding a new meat processing plant to be opened next to Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gurdwara Bradford. Next Tuesday 13th August there is a consultation in Bradford Town Hall starting at 9.45am to discuss openly this application. A petition was done and handed in to the council about 2-3 months ago. A Benti to Sangat to turn up to the consultation to show that the Sikh Community strongly oppose this application. There is already a stench around the Leeds Road area from 1-2 meat plants on Hammerton Street/Buck Street between Wakefield Rd and Leeds Rd. Last Sunday the terrible smell of carcasses reached Gurdwara Singh Sabha (further away from Guru Gobind Singh Gurdwara) and was very disturbing to the Sangat in the Darbaar Sahib during the Divaan. A meat plant directly next door to a Gurdwara Sahib would be horrific. Muslims would protest and never allow a Pig farm, slaughter house or a pub to open next to a Mosque so we need to show that Sikhs also object to a meat processing plant next to a Gurdwara Sahib. The planning application can be viewed here, please leave your comments on the planning website for the council to see. http://www.planning4bradford.com/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=MI3KWNDHLT000 PLEASE ADD COMMENTS TO PLANNING WEBSITE ASAP AS MEETING IS ON TUESDAY

  10. What a mature and a fabulous reply Lucky Singh Jee. This reply reminds me , of a similar situation in the Bible, a story which I heard a long ago, where Satan appeared disguised to Christ in the desert, and told Him, people say you are God, so turn these stones into bread, and I will give you a kingdom. Christ replied Him with the following words: know that I am your God, I have nothing to proove you, you are made to serve me, so go away from here, and so Satan disappeared. Without any weapons, without any hot debates and discussions, but with just simple words the evil was defeated by love and mercy of Christ. Because if Christ had wanted, just by His wish, the devil could have been burnt to ashes...... In the long run, in the end, the virtues and goodness prevail or win, over malice, hatred, and agyanta, so has been seen throughout the history.

He who keeps alight the unquenchable torch of truth, and never swerves from the thought of One God; he who has full love and confidence in God and does not put his faith, even by mistake, in fasting or the graves, saints, crematoriums, or Jogis places of sepulchre; he who recognises the One God and no pilgrimages, alms- giving, non-destruction of life, penances, or austerities; and in whose heart the light of the Perfect One shines, - he is to be recognised as a pure member of the Khalsa" (Guru Gobind Singh, 33 Swaiyyas)

  14. You have this current government being pushed under the noses of the current sangat by pardhans and commitees with a personal agenda. Mp's are invited and even though they deserve credit for addressing the sangat with a wgjkkwjkf, they then repeatedly referr to the gurudwara as a temple. They play the good cop bad cop card by saying even though the PM has said we cannot interfere but he will personally push for the accountability of at least one person to be charged thus hitting a soft spot with sangat offering them false hope. These people, including this current government are now using our Gurudwara and community leaders by offering them contacts within councils, and roles as councillors for their children, they are handed 'preferential' treatment by the police and as a result do not care about the wider community as long as there is a Benifit to themselves. It's sad but the panth, the kaum and the sangat have in our short history always suffered and lost at the hands of these selfish leaders. If the british government respected the Sikhs for their hard work in the uk today and our sacrifices for standing by them in the world wars, and wanted to show us their gratitude by putting past what they did to us after considering g us as a thorn in their side during their raaj and being responsible for the punjab Pakistan divide and the more recent 84 assistance however small it be, they would 100% support genocide status and justice for it for Sikhs. Fact is we can't look at them for justice any longer, we know where we stand.

  16. its not a problem with Sikhs its a problem with the Georgian calendar. These Sikh dates are coming from the Bikrami Calendar and thus don't always match up to the imperfect Georgian calendar. I personally follow Bikrami because its so much cooler, each month relates to what's happening during that solar Moon cycle eg. Eg Chet is when the flowers first come out and Viasakh is when the blossom to the fullest. its.much a head of its time in many ways but there is already a topic in this posted recently.

  17. Har ki Paudi Haridwar UTTARAKHAND, India (April 10, 2014)—All India Sikh Conference president Gurcharan Singh Babbar, in a letter to the Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat, has informed him about their plan to reclaim the land on which the historic Gurdwara Gyan Godadi Sahib stood. In his letter addressed to chief minister Harish Rawat, Gurcharan Singh Babbar has requested the state government to free the Gurdwara land, illegally occupied during the November 1984 genocidal violence against the Sikhs. The letter warned that in case the state administration failed to free the land that belonged to the Gurdwara of illegal occupants, “we will reclaim the Gurdwara, even if it means sacrificing our lives.” Gurcharan Singh Babbar reported that Sikhs have been agitating for the Gurdwara’s restoration to the community for the last four years. It was particularly dear to them, as it had been built about 450 years ago to commemorate Guru Nanak Sahib’s long stay at Har-ki-Paudi during a visit to Haridwar. Taking advantage of the anti-Sikh sentiments in the aftermath of then prime minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984, “some criminals demolished the Gurdwara, and illegally occupied the place,” Babbar remarked. The site has been turned into a Bharat Scouts and Guides office, he said. While the Sikhs insist that the site be handed back to rebuild Gurdwara, the administration proposed that the Sikhs accept another site for building a Gurdwara. That proposal was not acceptable to the All India Sikh Conference (AISC), Babar said. Sikh24.com

  25. this is important and shows how dangerous attitudes that blame women for rape and abuse are - i am quite shocked at some of the comments on this forum and how quick they are to judge and blame young women for the abuse they suffer. Victims blamed in India's rape culture - http://edition.cnn.com/2013/08/27/opinion/gupta-india-rape-cultureEditor's note: Ruchira Gupta is the president of Apne Aap Women Worldwide, an Indian organization dedicated to ending sex trafficking. She is the 2009 recipient of the Clinton Global Citizen Award for her work with victims and survivors of sexual violence. (CNN) -- When I read about the rape of a 23-year-old photojournalist in Mumbai, I thought, here we go again. On December 6, 1992, when I was a 29-year-old reporter covering the demolition of a mosque in northern India, I was attacked. I wasn't raped, but my attackers sexually assaulted and then tried to kill me. Someone dragged me to a trench outside the mosque and pulled my shirt off. But a passerby jumped in, fought off my attackers and saved me. When I appeared in court to testify against the attackers, their lawyers asked me questions that implied I was responsible. How could the daughter of a good family have gone to cover the demolition? Did I smoke? What kind of clothes was I wearing? Did I believe in God? Ruchira Gupta The judge did not stop them. It was a demoralizing and toxic experience, but one that is not unknown to women in India who choose to speak out against sexual attacks. They are silenced by a process that heaps shame, fear and guilt on them. Indian women feel sorrow, anger at U.S. student's harassment In rural Rajasthan in 1992, a judge dismissed charges filed by a low-caste, or Dalit, grassroots social worker, Bhanwari Devi, who said she was gang raped. She had been campaigning against child marriage. A judge said, "a middle-aged man from an Indian village could not possibly have participated in a gang rape in the presence of his own nephew." A judgment like this not only deters other women from testifying against their rapists, it also emboldens the attackers, who know that they will get away with it. Most women say they would never tell the police about an attack, afraid that they would be ignored or even abused by the cops themselves. Few women want to appear in court only to be stigmatized and traumatized -- unlike treatment of the suspects. While India's legal framework has improved for women over the past 20 years, the people implementing it are mostly male cops and lawyers who live in a deeply patriarchal society. Incidents of rape have gone up by 873% in India in the past 60 years. On average, each day, three Dalit women are raped in some part of our country. The conviction rate for rape cases in 2011 was 25% -- although some estimate only one in 10 rapes is reported. The conviction rate for men accused of raping Dalit women is almost nil. The National Crime Records Bureau's annual report of crime statistics also reports disturbing findings: A woman is raped somewhere in India every 20 minutes, and the number of children raped has increased by 336% in the past 10 years. This culture of impunity is certainly one of the reasons rape has too often become the weapon of choice for frustrated young men who blame women, increasingly visible in the workplace, for their unemployment, and who hope to regain jobs by frightening women back home through sexual violence. The desire to blame women is fed by a cult of masculinity promoted by corporate and political leaders who serve as role models for the rest of society. Harassment in India: 'The story you never wanted to hear' In the course of my work with Apne Aap Women Worldwide, I have seen the steady creeping of a rape culture into the fabric of India. We work to organize women in prostitution to resist their own and their daughters' rape. The biggest challenge we face is the attitude of politicians, senior police officials, heads of foundations and even policy makers who view rape as a normal part of society. Many have told me: "Men will be men." Recently, when National Crime Records Bureau pegged West Bengal as the state with the highest incidence of crimes against women, the chief minister contested the bureau's statistics rather than tackling the problem. Continually, budget allocations to the Ministry of Women and Child Development are reduced. Debates to ensure equal power sharing between the sexes through the Women's Reservation Bill have gone nowhere. But no amount of violence and intimidation is going to force women back into their homes. In fact, homes are often the places where females are in the most danger -- from the time they are conceived to old age. An average Indian female could likely be a victim of foeticide, infanticide, malnourishment, dowry, child marriage, maternal mortality, domestic servitude, prostitution, rape, honor killings and domestic violence -- simply because she is female. Equipped with better education, women are courageously taking their place in the public sphere as doctors, lawyers, journalists, bankers, politicians, farmers, teachers and more. They are signing up for social justice movements to end the growing inequality and unemployment in our country. As yet another gang-rape victim suffers in a Mumbai hospital in India, we have to recognize the need to overhaul the criminal justice system. In December 2012, India and the world were shocked by the brutal gang rape and beating aboard a moving bus of a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern, who later died of massive internal injuries. It prompted desperate calls for reform, protests and close examination of India's attitudes toward rape. But after the initial outrage, it seems that the law has only changed on paper. The rape in Mumbai might not have happened if the culture of rape was truly overcome and sexual assaults were taken seriously.

  27. I read the news report about this the other day in the Bradfor Argus & Telegraph. The Sikh spokesperson from the Gurdwara gave the reporters a list of reasons why it shouldn't be allowed and among those 'reasons' was the apparent 'fact' that "cows are holy to Sikhs and the meat plant could include the smell of beef wafting in the air" :stupidme:
