In Jalandhar and Chandigarh our relatives said the earthquake was felt, but there was not much structural damage.

In Lahore it was also felt and there was some damage and some people were injured and some people died.

I do not think there was very much structural damage at Nankana Sahib or Amritsar Sahib.

However in Amritsar there was a power line or something (?) that fell over and caused three shops to burn down. I'm not sure if anybody was injured in that.

Pak quake toll estimated at 30,000: Govt

Agencies

Islamabad/Srinagar, October 9, 2005

An estimated 30,000 people were killed in Pakistan occupied Kashmir by a massive earthquake, the region's Minister for Works and Communication Tariq Farooq said on Sunday.

Our rough estimates say more than 30,000 people have died in the earthquake, he said. Pakistan's military said earlier that at least 18,000 died in the 7.6 magnitude quake that hit on Saturday.

"There are cities, there are towns, which have been completely destroyed. Muzaffarabad is devastated," he added, referring to the capital of Pakistan's sector of disputed Kashmir.

Earlier, Pakistan military spokesman said more than 18,000 people have been killed and 41,000 injured in the massive earthquake

Maj Gen Shaukat Sultan told CNN, adding it was possible that the toll could be much higher.

Pointing out that the scale of the devastation was the biggest in Pakistan's experience, Sultan added that another 41,000 people had been injured in the quake.

AMRITSAR: The city here felt rigorous tremors as earthquake hit the region. However, no loss of life was reported till filing of the report. Several tremors followed throughout the day causing panic as people rushed out into the streets.

Several old buildings collapsed, including an abandoned building at Gate Bhagtanwala.

An old chimney tower at Dayal Bagh, Putlighar, collapsed. A three-storey building at Namak Mandi Sattowala bazaar caused damage to surrounding buildings and a tractor-trailer was seen buried under the debris as it caved in due to the impact of earthquake. Happy Model School, located at Chheharta, also reported damages but escaped casualty, as it was a holiday.

Similarly, a wall located near Darbar Sahib beside an old post office, collapsed. A fire also broke out at Amritsar Computer Hut at the Lawrence road as wires struck each other causing short-circuiting that led to fire causing loss of goods. However, the official version denied any connection with the fire.
