always bring a payta (offering) to the guru. It's a mark of devotion and respect. It doesn't have to be $.

The golak is just put out there up front b/c (I think) o/w many people would not donate money and the gurdwaras need that $ to run. Their expenses are quite high.

You don't need to give a donation everytime, just remember to bring with you the Naam that you have gathered from reciting Nitnem and doing Simran, this is pleasing to Guru Ji.

In Guru Sahib's time, what did Guru ji used to do with the "donations" that sangat use to give back then? If they were even given at all.
