Nihang Rehat

Recommended Posts

This nihang rehit is so good and complete. Why do the nihangs are not considered to be a part of mainstream sikhs ? People have a feeling that Nihangs have created their own maryadas and rehits and are not part of mainstream. What are the points of contradiction between mainstream sikhs and Nihangs (other than shaheedi degh) ?????

In order to understand this contention between these two schools of thought we must first understand what constitutes 'mainstream Sikhism' and the fact is that the Akali Nihang Singh Khalsa is the purataan maryada established by Guru Gobind Singh and practised in fullness through the Misal period and Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign and which continues to flourish unpolluted in the present day in Dal Panth.

This is the original unblemished Khalsa Sikhism. What you have termed mainstream Sikhism has it's genesis in the Neo-Sikh movement which began with the malech-influenced Teja Singh Bhasauria Panch Khalsa Diwan in the late 1800's before being fully established with the SGPC'S inauguration in 1922. Thus it is the SGPC'S British-influenced rehit which has supplanted the original purataan maryada as being 'mainstream Sikhsim' as they sought to create a more modern version of rehit thereby purging whatever elements pained their Victorian/Christian consciences, they were puritans, zealots and revisionists as well as traitors and they have inaugurated their false maryada as the real because Nihangs Singhs have no interest in writing historical monographs and such.

And so quite to the contrary to what you so innocently stated, it is the mainstream Sikhs who have made up their own maryada and the Nihangs who possess the original guru-ordained maryada. Only this fact has escaped the biased revisionist historians of the second and false Singh Sabha.

The souce of the contention you have outlined above stems from the fact that Nihang Singhs do not recognize the authority of the British-nurtured SGPC or their minions and so recognize only the temporal authority of the Panth Jathedar which is a guru-ordained institution.

The bones of contention that many mainstream Sikhs have with the true maryada (sukhnidhan, chatka) are really inconsequential when we consider the fact that Nihang maryada only recognizes these things as traditions proscribed for those interested in practising them, they are guru-ordained traditions that must be respected though nobody is coerced into carrying them out. It is up to the individual Nihang if he wants to practise these things and many do not, indeed there have been many brahmgyani Nihangs who have abstained from these practises even though in the Guru and Misal periods they were commonplace.

47. After heeding the call of nature bathe five times

Veer Ji, I think this Rehat means to do panj ishnaan (i.e. hands (2), feet(2), and face(1)) after heeding the call of nature, not that you actually have to take 5 showers or baths  Just thought I'd clear that one up to avoid any confusion, please do correct me if I'm wrong.

Just another thing id like to point out lol. I started translating this Rehat with my mum lol and i coul;dnt find it on the english version on here, but it says that when doing Rehraas you must also do Aarti aswell :)

Its mentioned in point no. 9

"Shami - Sodar Rehraas --Aarti Aarta parhe ja suney. Saaun samey kirtan sohila da path kar ardas kar bisraam karey"

Aarti is a collection of beautiful shabads and one shud try to sing arti daily.

I dont know much about artaa. May be some nihung veer can tell about arta. I guess it must be contaning Dasam Bani.

Khalsa Ji, Does any1 know where to find a copy of the Nihang Rehat? Preferebly in english! Or if not, does anyone know anythin bout the Rehat? Thanx!

go to Amritsar, and then to Bhai Chatter Singh Jeevan Singh's bookshop near Harmandir Sahib. Ask for either a 'Tarana Daal' Gutka or a 'Buddha Dal' Gutka and it should have a 'Nihang' Rehat in the front.

sorry, don't think it's in english though

Thanks for this post. Does Budha Dal recognize the supremacy of Sri Akal Takht. They got problem with SGPC, but do Nihangs respect the hukamnamas of Sri Akal Takht ???

This is a very good question so the answer will naturally be complex, historically the Jathedar of Akal Takhat since it's inception as a Sikh institution has ONLY ever been the Jathedar of Buddha Dal, thus the two positions have always been seen as one seat of guru-ordained temporal authority for the whole Sikh nation militaristically, politically and religiously and thus if you go back to the history books you will see that Baba Darbara Singh and Akali Phula Singh etc, were Jathedars of both Buddha Dal and Akal Takht.

In the 1920's, Baba Sahib Singh Kaladhari was Jathedar of both the Akal Takht and Buddha Dal, but the British conspired to oust him forcibly from his post because of his and the Akali Nihang's vehement anti-British sentiment, and because the British knew that if they controlled this shrine through some servile Sikh puppets that they could then ideologically control the Sikh nation and unfortunately this is what has happened. A British backed S.G.P.C force forcibly entered Akal Takht and assaulted the 80 year old Jathedar breaking his arm, 'Master' Tara Singh then through the Dasam Granth on the floor and the SGPC took over the shrine and have held it until the present day.

Now as the SGPC were traitors to the Khalsa Panth their authority has never been recognized by Nihang Singhs, and by our traditions we still consider the Buddha Dal Jathedar to also be the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht because in the guru's eyes he rightfully is.

No it doesn't - 5 kakakrs were given by Guru Sahib, we can't add our own.

I agree with Matheen. Kesh is the kakaaar and NOT keski. A bibi can be given gurmantar if she is willing to cover her head with a chunni ALL THE TIME.

But if a bibi wants to get Naam drirsh, SHE HAS TO WEAR A KESKI.

Khalsa AKAL PURAKH ke FAUJ.

Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji - 03-Baba-Gurbax-Singh-Ji.jpg

According to ' http://www.damdamitaksal.org/index.php?opt...p;Itemid=8'

Baba ji was the Jathedar of both Damdami Taksal and Sri Akal Takhat Sahib(Sikh Temporal Throne).

How is this possible if only Jathedar of Buddha Dal were Jathedar of Akal Takht also?

In puratan days, Taksal and the Dal were one entity, Taksaal was an institution IN the Dal, so jathedaar of Taksal and the Dal were the same person. Leader of the Dal back then was also usually jathedar of Akaal Takhat sahib, they had a LOT more authority than the Dals jathedar today does.

Akaali Foola Singh is a good example we all know about, jathedaar of the Dal, and Akaal Takhat Sahib :)

    • lol dal panth Panj told me explicitly not to associate with Vadhbhag Singh Sodhi followers!
    • We have lamp (or Jyot) the pure unscented candle for a reason. Traditionally, Patis used candle light (jyot), so they could read SGGS in darkness. Light, elec didn't exist. Dhoop is used to attract the "Good spirits" but also keep freshness where Maharaj will be.  Interestingly and coincidentally I heard Sakhi a few dsys ago. During Dasa Pitha's time these souls were roaming the Earth and even Sangat noticed. Maharaj asked them "y u here?" They replied during recitation of SGGS and making Degh they didn't bother lighting candle. THAT WAS THEE ONLY REASON NO GATI WAS GIVEN TO THEM!!!  AUTHENTICITY NOT CHECKED I heard once on YT like 2 days ago.  If u apply dhoop in one room of your house twice a week u will notice a difference esp in the smell and freshness of that room.
    • Sangat ji, With the hot weather as per Guru's Hukm, how can we look after our kes?  First of all the beard! Working in Construction, factory and any other heated environment I UNDERSTAND! At my workplace it's over 32 degree celcius and sometimes we have to lift 20kg ALL! DAY! My tips, regularly shampoo the beard during ishnan. APPLY OIL! The technique of applying oil is by rubbing it thoroughly in the roots. Pay attention to the noise esp on the chin. You will hear this "crosh crosh" noise. Keep rubbing oil until u can't hear it no more! This means the oil has blended in properly.  Second tip on beard, keep an extra kanga in your pocket. Every two, three hours give your beard a proper comb down to get rid of any sweat or stickiness. SECOND BENEFIT! Do this all 12 months every single day your beard will look like it's been professionally groomed. TRY IT! People will ask you "What gel u use? How can yer beard be naturally like that?" You can say all I use is coconut oil or whaeva oil but just comb the beard every 2-3 hours for a minute.  As for the kes, morning time get rid of all the gronjra (or knots - forgotten English word), in the morning. However, during evening comb down make sure you get rid of small remaining gronjra and comb yer hair nice and straight. You will feel soooo so relaxed. Yes our hair will go unnoticed due to Dastar, but our hair demands time and self grooming! So proper combing down, spending a good 15-20 mins most evenings is an absolute MUST!  Most evenings I let my hair down and cover hair with my parna for 2-3 hours so it gets to relax from the tying up.  FINAL TIP! We are Sikhs so we keep fighting and remember this! The tradition of Dastar and uncut hair started in India, where the weather is twice as hot. Everytime we bring this thought in the mind, Guru ji will bless us and make us feel cooled down by a notch.  Fateh.
    • Been so much nindya and attacking Shastarvidiya since the 2000s, however if we look at gatka now it's still mostly as poor and poorly taught as it was back then, still morris dancing moves and still behzti moves in BBC shows about sikhi and vaisakhi. If people were going to attack shastarvidiya, wouldn't have made sense to improve gatka instead and make it more effective? Additionally, the Nihang Singh presence has improved greatly now, and the cracks within the the SGPC and affiliated jatha jathebandis are showing more greatly as panth becomes more knowledgable with dasam bani and itihas day-by-day, so much gyaan which was lost within panjabi sikhs during colonial times. In the 2000s, the groups were able to talk down this bani and  gyaan by associating it with  RSS and hindus, brahminwaad etc. Not working so well now is it? However with gyaan it would be also good for us to try and preserve our martial arts and keertan vidiya as well! More and more crazy keertan videos are coming out from jatha members that are being made fun of and making sangat annoyed and upset, on tiktok and instagram reels.

Being from Punjab, almost every Sardaarji i know (amritdhari or not) sleeps/showers with their hair uncovered. I don't think Guru Sahib asked us to wear Dastar to sleep and I don't think it is in SRM.   The idea of "keski being worn to sleep" is cos in Bollywood films (Bachna Ae Haseeno) Sikh characters usually tie a gol parna when sleeping since the actor's usually Hindu. So they gotta cover his head somehow or he'd have cut hair. Same reason Diljit wore a pagg to bed in the El Sueno vid. Only time they didn't do that was in Gadar with Sunny Deol which just looked odd tbh   What in the world? What sikh or even a decent human would base their knowledge of their culture or religion on a movie industry, that too Bollywood?  Believe me, no sikh ever said, I must cover my head becasue an actor did so in a movie. I've been doing it all wrong, I must start covering mh head because the sikh in that movie did.  Just because every panjabi and sardaar you know, does something, also doesn't make it right..  Follow the guru. And if you have a medical condition, then exemptions can be made.  Just admit it, because of my medical condition, I am not able to follow this rehit. Why are you getting everyone else to drop to your level?
