25th Anniversary Of 1984

Recommended Posts

This rally will be better than the 2007 rally and of course better than last years ,Trafalgar Sq has been sorted along with Hyde Park now it is left up to sangat for what they would like to bring to the rally , ie: Bannners, props and so on.

Benti to sangat to wear and orange band as was done in the original rally in 1984 ,to symbolise remembrance and justice, sangat can also choose their own co ordinations along with this ie dress code does your group want to dress in all bana?black shirts?Orange?

Slogans - The sangat should this year keep to a minimum Panjabi slogans as most of the Londonders ie goreh do not understand,we need to come up with good to the point slogans in english.

We need maximum turn out preparations are being made as we speak to promote the rally but it can only truly be promoted when we as the common Sikhs of the UK OURselves go out there in our Gurdwareh and communities and promote it ,maybe a simple poster for the time being until the finalised design is out sayin

Sikh Rally for Remembrance and Justice London Hyde Park 7th June 25th Anniversary 1984

Those of us with media links to papers,Tv Stations, journalists, and those of us who own websites should start now to get ready their media resources to cover the event on video, audio, and picture slideshows.

It can only be a success if WE make it a success , promotion should start now with the date 7th June 2009 Hyde Park ,then as time goes on we can add timings and routes, but Hyde Park begins usualy at 10 - 11am,we know that much for sure, this would ensure and give sangat enough to time to take out holidays if they need to and to make sure they are free on that certain day.

Online promotion will begin soon and you will all be informed of that, once that is done we should all do our bit online as well as on the street and Gurdwareh we attend to maximise publicity.

By any chance can the organisers of the Chaupai Sahib website, when sending out emails about the number of Chaupai Sahibs done, add on the bottom of the small poster attached

'7th June 2009 Sikh Rally for Remembrance and Justice Hyde Park' 25 yrs 1984

As the Chaupai Sahib medium of reaching sangat directly in such hugee numbers would do great promotion

The flag burning becomes boring as well. It was justified in 1984 as there was a lot of emotion, anger and passion. However, 25 years on we still have all that but we should be able to do it in a democratic manner and show that we are not hate filled as the media would like to show.

The media would much sooner show a single picture of the indian flag on fire and sikh youth in their ninja masks than showing the rest of the rally and the massive turnout. A lot of people will be attending and why get into a frenzy and show sikhs as mindless extremists. Be aware that a lot of goreh on-lookers will be there and with the current economic climate will be quick to judge and show us as asylum seeking layabouts as opposed to the hard working peaceloving community that we are.

With it being 25years, it need needs to be professional and we def need access to trafalgar square...Hopefully Sikh Federation are involved in organising this year!

Trafalgar square has been booked this year, and paid for. This is confirmed.

Its down to the collective collaboration of all sikh organisations within the FSO (federation of sikh organisations). There was a supposed mix up last year or so we're told, but its sorted out.

It will be a big event and all who can attend should do so.

All gurdwareh gurdwareh should be contacted before hand for transport arrangements.

Southall sangat can come to park avenue gurdwara where DAL KHALSA UK organise the coaches every year for every1.

Please do spread word of this rally to every1, especially those who do not usually attend.

More information will be released about the program nearer to the date.

Flyers/leaflets will be released soon and distributed to gurdwareh and general public. Leaflets will be given out very early so there will be plenty of notice. THere will be various announcements at Gurdwareh about the rally, and a offical 1984 rally 25th anniversary Video will also be made and released prior to the rally to advertise it and encourage people to come.

So every1 keep a watch on that.

We want all sikhs to unite and come together under 1 banner.

In memory of 1984 around 7 programmes have already been booked throughout February and March. More are being planned for April and May so please support and attend these events. Commitment to human rights is a daily thing, not just something we should be doing once a year. As it stands we have something happeneing every weekend for the next 2 months so lets turn up.

The guy who asked the question is correct and so far our response has been typical. We jump straight to the March as for many of us this is about the only thing we do during the year for human rights/1984. Its not enough.

We need to think outside the box and do more, a lot more. The march gets dismissed by the press and the india media machine/govt as a radical/fundamentalist rally. So while we should obviously still do it and make a success of it, we need to do other things as well.

If people want to make the rally a success then they need to do the work themselves, dont rely on organisations. Unfortunetly more often then not, its a chance for certain org's to do a bit of self promo without any real parchar. So people should really make their own placards, banners, etc etc.

Also benti to everyone involved in the rally, lets remember this is a panthic event and a panthic rally. Over the last 2 maybe 3 years again people have started bringing jathebandi/organisation names into it. This was NOT the case during the previous years. Please do not use this as a band wagon to fly the flag for your organisation, this is an event to remember the victims of genocide. Lets have some respect at least.

Other ideas being worked on by different singhs from different areas include magazines, cd's, mass leafleting, documentaries (radio and tv) etc. Some of these are still in infacy so would not be right to discuss in further detail until they are closer to being realised.

The issue of human rights should be important to all of us, and everyone should take part. Lets hope we can get some good work and parchar done this year.

Note regarding UK preparations for the 25th anniversary of June and November 1984

Speculation has required us to issue this note so we can avoid confusion on what is happening

Good news - The Sikh Federation (UK) has booked Trafalgar Square.

Bad news - BUT other organisations in the FSO have still not made a decision on whether to formally support the Freedom Rally there. We will not go into their reasons until a final decision is made. Several FSO meetings have taken place since the Summer of 2008 - another meeting will take place in the next few weeks when the final position should become clear.

Good news - We expect at least one or two other organisations in the FSO to support Trafalgar Square, BUT either way the Sikh Federation (UK) told the FSO at the outset we would organise Trafalgar Square come what may as the Sangat demands it. We will then seek the direct support of Gurdwaras and other Sikh organisations for not only Trafalgar Square, but the other activities that are planned (see below).

Proposals include the following:

  • a worldwide Sikh Holocaust Week – Sunday 31 May to Sunday 7 June 2009
  • in the UK the Sikh Holocaust Week will commence with local events in Gurdwaras on Sunday 31 May 2009
  • production and distribution of plaques to pay tribute to Sikh martyrs from Guru Arjan Dev Ji through to the martyrs of 1984 and over the last 25 years. The plaques have been carefully designed and worded and will primarily be for Gurdwaras. The local plan is plaques will be officially unveiled in Gurdwaras in the three months March-May 2009. Important dignitaries, such as the local MP, MEP, Mayor etc. will be encouraged to perform the unveiling in the presence of the local media.
  • 1-day remembrance events in major cities for non-Sikhs from Monday 1 June to Saturday 6 June. These will be in places like London, Birmingham, Leicester, Leeds, Derby, Bristol etc. and at key locations e.g. London – Trafalgar Square. At these events the idea is to give out bottles of water and perforated cards – half the card will be a message to take away about June 84 and the other half will be to sign so cards can be collated and can be submitted to the UN. Thousands of cards from non-Sikhs from across the globe to the UN will show support and solidarity for the Sikhs and request action on the 25th anniversary.
  • On Tuesday 2 June (being finalised) there will be a June 84 Sikh Lobby in the UK Parliament to mark the 25th anniversary. Following the lobby politicians from each of the political parties will also pay a tribute to Sikh Shaheeds at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. The national media will be invited to cover the Cenotaph event. There will be a presence at the 1-day remembrance event in Trafalgar Square throughout the day.
  • On Sunday 7 June we shall hopefully have one of the largest ever gatherings for the Remembrance March (Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square) and Freedom Rally (Trafalgar Square). We are hoping to construct two screens in Trafalgar Square with a full day of activities for non-Sikhs. We are thinking of having a visual floral tribute in Trafalgar Square on 7 June whereby individual Sikhs and non-Sikhs will bring and lay flowers. There will also be other creative ways during the March and Rally to highlight the plight of the Sikhs and involve non-Sikhs in our campaign.
  • Other events will be planned for October/November 2009.

No doubt some of the FSO members may be surprised that we are looking and promoting things beyond the 7 June Hyde Park event, but the Sangat and different Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations have been in contact and are rightly demanding that we push ahead as time is getting short. We are also co-ordinating events and actvities for the Sikh Holocaust Week with like-minded Sikh organisations in Punjab, USA, Canada etc.
