My assessment of singh sabha based on my own research in short is sweet and bitter.

-Sweet because obviously they did great seva such as remove all curropt mahants, removed moortis, remove caste system distinction against mahzbhi, stream lined lot of parchar, refocus on outer rehit, rejuvenate spirit of sikh indentity and nationalism, and made dharam very straight fwd by removing sant personality worship from mainstream. Hence, many genuine sants also endorsed them including nirmale. In fact it may surprise some, it was nirmale who also helped also bring reform movements

-Bitter because once hostile factions within singh sabha start taking over- instead of filtering bad fishes in the pond they destroyed the whole pond by acid by becoming extremely parnioa, bringin lot of knee jrek reactions approaches, were extremely hindu or even indic-phobic, insecure, bringing one dimensional translations of gurbani-jseduo victorian influence, removing adhyatam aspect of sikhi- various gnosis interpertation of gurbani- uthanka/sargun-bhakti/nirgun-gyan antriv arths of gurbani, removing indic references in gurbani by confining its interpretation to very literal, killed lot of its surrounding- old interpretation of gurbani*/ removed guru sahib frescos, puratan raag vidya, traditions or maryada of nihangs, nirmale, udasi, sants start marginalize them taking over the traditions and properties. Hence why, re-effort was made in anandpur sahib resolution to re-integrate old orders of sikhism back in mainstream.

8. Taking appropriate measures for the enactment of an All India Gurdwaras Act with a view to improving the administration of the gurdwaras throughout the country and to reintegrate the traditional preaching sects of Sikhism like Udasis and Nirmalas, without in any way encroaching upon the properties of their maths.

If puratan orders have residue of santanism , then reformist singh sabha also have residue of bhausariasm. There is no question about that.

They just replaced the old bad guys with the new bad guys? (I'm assuming that your interpretation of what happened)

It's little bit deeper than that, how about changing gnosis interpretations of Vahiguru/ Mool mantar/five khands into confined separate very organized realm-separate reality up in the sky somewhere (every abhramic christian like) than all pervading non dual reality- advai gurmat which is one non dual absolute reality all pervading common matrix of all experiences and perceptions further expressed in various aspects of divine (Sargun-bhagti/shakti/shabad surat).

Anyway let bygones be bygones, as long as great gnosis exegesis gurbani deep profounding interpretation and direct experience of gurbani is still there, our dharam is secure.

I mentioned this in a past - Whole singh sabha thing is over-rated, whole samparda is over rated, whole jathas are over ratated and whole sanatan thing is also over-rated. Regular sikhs who are initiated into khalsa, just need to be shown deep layers of gurmat thats all in direct experience which is profoundly liberating, resonating with all and thats all there is to it, all these sticking conceptual ism / labelling/beleif/concepts would fall away automatically. That's' the power of Jot all in one, one in all-naam its consumes everything. Caution needs to be paid, as one can fall into same pitfall one is trying to avoid when it comes traditional thought vs reformist thought..it all comes down to direct self discovery, self awareness and self realization.

This is what was happening at Darbar Sahib when the mahants controled it.

The precincts began to be used by pandits and astrologers for the propagation of superstitious practices. Idols were openly worshipped in the holy compound. Dirty booklets were sold and shops of all

sorts were opened in the premises. On the

Basant and the Holi days licentious songs were

sung by musicians inside the Temple. Eogues

roamed about harassing women. Brothels were

opened in the neighbouring houses, where

unwary women visiting the Temple were

taken for immoral purposes, some sadhus

acting as agents.*

In 1905 with the general awakening in

the country, the Sikhs felt their grievances

keenly and determined to right some of the

outstanding wrongs. The idols were

re-moved, and a widespread agitation

was set on foot to nationalise the control of

the Darbar Sahib.

Ok, thanks for that. Gur-Kirpa that we may be blessed with that knowledge as we move up spiritually, and gain some of this lost knowledge.

A n editorial in the Khalsa Advocate (English),

December 15, 1904, summed up the situation

which existed before the emergence of the Singh

Sabha thus:

". . . false gurus grew up in great abundance whose

only business was to fleece their flock and pamper their own self-aggrandizement. Properly speaking, there was no Sikhism. Belief in the Gurus was gone. The idea of brotherhood in the Panth was discarded. The title of 'Bhai' so much honoured by Sikhs of old, fell into disuse and contempt. Sikhs grovelled in superstition and idolatry... It [sikhism]

had thus lost all that was good and life-giving in the faith."

Letter in the Khalsa Akhbar, October 8, 1897, reported:

"On Tuesday, Bhadon 31, the pujaris of the Tarn Taran Gurdwara held the shradha ceremony in honour of Guru Arjan Sahib Ji . Those feasted were from outside the faith and they smoked."

Before Singh Sabha, situation was so bad that even Giani Ditt Singh , a very much honored literary giant of Singh Sabha movement had to withdraw from gurdwara when Karah Prashad was to be served, reason being that he was from "low caste", and many priests as well well educated devotees were followers of this anti-Sikhism casteism ritual.

That spearing part is a blatant lie being spread by Niddar and his chellas. No such thing ever happened since the Singh Sabhias and Akalis were also believers in Dasam Granth.

In Kamalroop Singh and Gurinder Singh's new book on the Dasam Granth you can see a picture of this saroop after it was speared.

But how were they selected? A vote, Punj Pyare, nobody is really wanting Badal to pick the Jathadars.

Initially the Budha-Dal was tasked with the mantle of Akal-Takhat Jathedari by Nawab Kapoor Singh Ji; whoever was Jathedar after him of the Dal also became Jathedar of Akal-Takhat.
