A Sikh once came into the darbar of Satguru Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj asked this question, "O True Emperor, holy men have risen above worldly attachment. By what thought are they aided? Attachment is a very chronic ailment of mankind. By what method have they risen above this? Please, be kind and explain it to us." "I will tell you the way the saints have conquered attachment to the world. They regard the material possessions as a dream. Just as what you see in a dream, does not exist when you wake up, in the same way saints have woken up to the real knowledge (gyan). All objects of the world appear to be transient to them," explained Maharaj. Satguru Sri Guru G…

It is an accepted fact that Sikhism propagates the use of Raag and Gurbani as a means of worship of the Almighty. This tradition has been passed down through the innovation of Raagis (Those that sing the Raags.) The very first raagi acknowleged in Sikh history was Guru Nanak Dev Jis trusted friend and companion Bhai Mardana Ji. Legend has it that when Guru Nanak was given Bani to recite to the world from the Divine, the same power would also instruct Bhai Mardana to pluck the Rabab in a certain Raag. Thus Raag and Gurbani became two spirits in one. Bhai Mardana was then known as a Rababi and the subsequent Rababi tradition has developed from him. In memory of this it is …

Bani referes to Mind at at many places. I have following questions that the honorable members may like to advise on. 1.What exactly is this mind? 2.Is it tangible or intangible? 3.What happens to mind when we die? 4.What is its seat in our body or otherwise.? 5.How Simran goes with us in the next life? It should be thru. the mind or the soul? 6.Does mind also die with the physical death? 7. Are we born with the mind that we leave behind after the death? Kindly support your answers with bani's quote and I shall be highly oblidged. Regards to all.

Dhan Guru Arjun Dev jee (meditating upon whom will release one from cycle of births and deaths - japio jin arjun dev guroo fer sankat jon garab na aa-i-o), says 'Jo Mangeh Takur apany tey so-ee Soee devay' 'whatever is asked from the Master that is exactly what is given'. In Hibernia Road Gurudwara they have this in big letters across the entrance to the Darbar. I used to think this meant whatever you asked for in Ardas is what you'll get, but all ardas's don't come true do they? So what does it mean? The answer clicked when my dad was watching a nature program, some creatures have evolved to lea…

vaheguru ji ka khalsa vaheguru ji ki fateh (Taken from DiscoverSikhi.com, originally posted by Jasleen Kaur.) A man limps into the main hall of the Fremont Gurdwara. His walk is that peculiar shuffle of someone who has had both legs broken and learned to walk again. his beard is full and black, eyes strong, head high. He is not old enough to be suffering so much pain from the simple act of walking. When he bows his matha tek, his feet tell a horror story of pain. blackened stripes scar the soles of his feet. the hallmark of the Punjab Police- red hot iron bars used to beat the soles... as if by beating the sole they can break the soul. He walks to the side of the Palki…

Dying to the Shabad Tulsee Das was a Saint. When he was young he was devoted to reaching God and he struggled slowly on this path. When he got married he was head over heels in love with his beautiful wife, she became the sole reason for his living, everything he did was to please her. One day he surprised her with a gift - she was overwhelmed by his love and said, 'If you were devoted to God half as much as you are to me, I'm sure you would have reached God by now.' The words struck Tulsee Das to the core and his earlier life of devotion came flooding back to his mind, from that day on God became his sole focus once again. Many years later when Tulsee Das was old a…

Pandit Kirpa Singh Dutt was the son of Bhai Aru Ram, a Sarasvat Brahman of Matan, 65 KM east of Srinagar, in Kashmir. Aru Ram had met Guru Har Rai and sought his blessing at the time of the latter's visit to Kashmir in 1660. Kashmiri Brahmins, came to Guru Tegh Bahadur at Anandpur in May 1675 for protection against atrocities of Aurungzeb. Kirpa Ram led this group of Kashmiri Pandits driven to dire straits by State Persecution. They had faced stiff taxes, atrocities, cruelty under muslim Mughal governor of Kashmir. Honour of their daughters was being lost and they were losing their religion to the fanatic zeal and proletyzation activities of Islamic crusaders. Iftikh…
