Wjkk Wjkf, I find it astonishing that Many Gurdwaras are celebrating Gurburbs on the "Nearest weekend" for the convenience of the sangat and their working patterns. I think the main program, when all main Kirtani Jatha's are called should be on the Actual Gurpurb day, even if it falls on a working day.

i don't think there should be an issue with kids parties...provided there's no western/hindi/bhangra music etc. Now for the sake of argument, if we allowed any parties provided no meat/alcohol is to be served, i know very well what will happen. Most of my relatives are not Gursikh and drink/eat meat...i remember when i was young we had a close relative who did such a party (no meat/alcohol) - as it was a close wedding, my relatives decided to fill up all their car boots with alcohol and all the men at the party were in the car park of the hall getting drunk and once drunk, they went into the same party where there was no alcohol served! Now we all know this happens and will continue to happen even in the Gurdwara carpark - my relatives wouldn't give two hoots that its a Gurdwara carpark. So for this reason, NO PARTIES AT ALL (except kids as stated by SinghWarrior) should be allowed on any Gurdwara premises period!!!

There was a live program in Rakabganj Gurdwara sahib where bani from Bachittar Natak, sri dasam granth was recited in full josh. For five years there was ban by manmat ppl but now it seems like they started to understand their mistake (?). Whatever it is.. its good for the panth.

Akal Takht's sandesh expressly forbids naach, gaana and tapnaa, so there is an issue with non-alcoholic and non-meat parties with Bhangra and Giddha. There are some Gurdwaras which permit kids parties, with bouncy castles, toys, games, egg-less cakes, etc., which is fine, as there is no Bhangra, Giddha or Western Music.

I agree with you. Although, I do think that if meat and alcohol are not allowed, the venue is likely to be less attractive for bhangra party bookings. I can't see many Punjabi's booking a venue for a party where they can't get drunk and munch kebabs. Nevertheless, we do deserve to have full clarity from the RST committee and full adherance to the Akal Takht Sandesh..

We have it pretty good here in England for these kind of issues so it may be a good idea to look at what British Sikhs did in the 60s/70s, eg. the case of Mandla v Dowell-Lee (schoolboy fighting for right to wear a dastar in school) which recognises Sikhs as a seperate ethnic group due to the special rights we require as a result of our unique customs and needs. There was also the campaign to allow Sikhs to ride motorcycles without helmets which resulted in an exemption for Sikhs under the relevant legislation.

They are not confused at all. It was well planned move conducted by Sarna in collaboration with missionaries of all hues. No dasam bani was read in these Gurudwaras for the last five years. When Ragi Balbir singh ji tried to read Dasam Bani, he was stopped personally by Sarna. The verse " Guru teg Bahadar simriye ----- " was removed by Sarna from Sis Ganj Gurudwara sahib last year. Sikhs have to be careful of missionary elements. They are doing damage to sikhism under some emotive issues.They are the ones creating division among sikhs. For example there is only one Gurudwara in New York area that is celebrating Gurpurab of tenth master on Jan 5. Other all Gurudwaras are celebrating on Jan 11.Guess who is the main kathakar there? It is none other than Gurnindak Jagtar Jachak. he is known gurnindak who ridicules naam simran in the worst possible language. Yet i find funny when religious people claimimng to be panthic support such people in the name of calendar. One such person is advertising his function on some panthic sites and misguiding young minds. What a hypocrisy?. There is a lesson learnt from buckling of Sarna. That is those who will propagate against established sikh traditions will be doomed in the long run. Panth is supreme. As in Grays, you will probably find that the rally could go on for several hours. The Sangat stayed in the Grays Gurdwara Complex for over 7 hours. So the rally is likely to tip into Saturday evening and even further. The media would have also been expected to attend, I believe BBC WM, ITV Central, Sunrise TV expressed an interest in covering the satkaar rally as they had made contact/asked for statements from some UK Sikh organisations regarding the Akal Takht Sandesh & Sikh Rehit Maryada. Coverage was also obviously expected in Punjabi/Sikh media which would have raised further awareness to the wider Sikh community. Anyway, fortunatly the Pardaan of RST, Mr Jasvinder Singh Sagoo, is showing a great deal of support for the Uk sangat's concerns about meat, sharab and parties in MJSR Hall and Akal Takht Sandesh. It looks less and less likely that there may be a need for the demo on the 15th at RST. I suppose the meeting with satkaar will formally finalise everything.

Whilst I agree, it means the Kirtani Jatha's will be playing to nearly half-empty halls if the Gurpurabs are held during the week. However, in the Gurudwara I've frequented since childhood, the turnout during the week for occasions like Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Gurpurab, Bandi Chor, Vaisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Gurpurab, the December Shaheedi events, etc., is still packed during the weekday as much as anything on the weekend. I guess its about the Shardaa of the sangat too.
