  1. Waheguru! A neighbor right in front of our house had found him and they just realized it was our dog. I remember seeing him when we used to play outside and he was always really nice. He said he loved dogs too and it was all good and mentioned karma. Waheguru! Thank you everyone and thank you to that amazing individual who took him in! I just kept saying thank you man but I don't know how to repay him, anyone have any suggestions?

  7. Nidar likes to think that he has the FULL vidiya, but really he just learnt the basic as well and propped up the rest with reading literature and amalgamating other arts. This is evident from those who have seen the progression over the last 15 years, what is now even in name is different to what it is was then. To say it is ancient and full is a complete massive long shot, I mean they can't even make wootz steel like the old days. For Nidar to have learnt the complete art there had to have been someone at budha dal who knew the full art, and they only taught one person?, and anyone else in India "oh they don't know the full art" probably because they havent been exposed to other martial arts for their techniques to be assimilated or they just not very good at adding 'loon - masala' As time goes on our weapons have advanced and moved onto archery, cannons, guns and explosives so the old arts have naturally died away. Another thing is guru Gobind Singh Ji was an Avid Archer it was his favourite weapon, why isnt this in the FULL shastervidiya, and horse archery and horse warfare and the use of guns and cannons. Regardless of this there is one aspect of Sikh Martial tradition that was unique and it was the fighting spirit of the Khalsa, most of Guru Gobind Singh ji's followers were simple farmers, tanners, carpenters, traders etc. but he made us all kings and princesses, and gave us a purpose and a way to fight agaisnt the oppression. the 'shastarvidiya' as Nidar states was there before the Sikhs as well, but they were getting panned by the invading forces from Persia, Europe and Uzbekistan (where the Mughals originate from) they had powerful composite bows on horseback (which had been honed and perfected over generations since Genghis khans time) which could decimate Indian shastarvidiya armies before they even got half way through the battlefield, they wore armour which Indians were unaccustomed to. So all this talk of Marams(pressure points) that Nidar teaches his students wouldn’t have been used in battles. The Mughals also introduced the use of gunpowder that would not only damage but disorientate the enemy horses and elephants. Thus Shastarvidiya was defeated and defunct by the superior invading forces "They brought with them techniques and instruments of warfare that were hitherto unheard of in the sub-continent. The soldiers were completely protected from any possibility of physical attack by means of a complete shield of armour from head to foot, their daggers and swords were made of superior alloys and they brought with them the use of gunfire in warfare. That is why, despite the courage and valour of the Indian armies a small group of warriors was able to overtake them and lay the foundation for one of the grandest Empires in Indian history, the Mughal Empire." From the Art Of Mughal Warfare so what was different between Guru Gobind Singh ji's soldiers, well what he instilled in them was a fearless attitude and led by example by sacrificing the world but not his beliefs and truth and justice, this gave wake to a new kind of warrior, a Khalsa who fought with honour and had already given their head at baptism. It was the pure audacity and the way in which the Sikhs so readily gave their lives with great happiness that shook the foundations of the Mughal Empire. The idea that it was a certain STYLE of fighting that enabled the Sikhs to not only win battles but win the hearts of the people to create the Khalsa raj, is in my eyes a bit of a Jackie Chan Kung Fu tale, where the snake style beats the eagle style. Without spirit and zeal and spiritual strength any army or style of fighting is useless. Similarly for Khalsa without the guru gurbani and naam simran there is no point. The Sikhs fought in the Second World War not with shastarvidiya but with guns and bayonets, using European modern style of fighting and they were hailed as having great courage and bravery - just read the history of the battle of Saraghari. So don't be duped by dazzling displays or martial arts showmanship, or claims of ancient complete hidden techniques that have survived thousands of years, which can in no way be corroborated or proven. When Nidar first came to the UK he used to claim that he never knew the name of his master who taught him, he was anonymous and lived hidden.

  11. Who cares how you do Matha tekh? It means to bow your head. Whether your head touches the ground or your feet are parallel doesn't make a difference. There is not gurmat way of doing it. People just keep making things up. At my gurdwara, there was a fad of walking backwards after doing Matha tekh, so you don't show your back to Guru Granth Sahib. They used to scold people for turning their back. That is until someone walking backwards, tripped over someone else foot and fell flat on their rear end. It was pretty funny.

  13. From what we have learned in the Sangat of Gursikhs, Matha-tek constitutes the following: 1. Walk into Guru-Darbar, with utmost humility, wearing Gurmukhi Baana. It is lack of fear and respect for Guru Sahib to not wear Baana in Guru Sahib's Darbar. Similarly, to is extremely awkward to not wear a Hazooria when coming to the Darbar. Matha-tek is not complete without Hazooria. 2. While walking towards, Guru Sahib, the eyes should be fixed upon Guru Sahib or half closed and focused towards the floor in front of Guru Sahib. 3. If one is wearing a shawl or loyee, then it should be opened from front, so that the Shasters (weapons) that Gursikh is wearing, are visible to Guru Sahib. 4. With humility, stand in front of Guru Sahib and do a short Ardaas. 5. At the conclusion of the Ardaas, do Matha-tek, get up and say Fateh to Guru Sahib, by facing Guru Sahib alone. 6. After saying Fateh to Guru Sahib, turn on right (or left) and glancing (having Darshan) of Sangat, say Fateh to Sangat. Then turn on the other side and say Fateh to Sangat on that side, while having Darshan. 7. Then find a spot and with humility, fear and love of Guru Sahib and Sangat, sit there cross-legged. Expanding on the point 5 above, the following should be kept in mind, while Matha-tek. 1. With both hands folded, hold your Hazooria within your hands. 2. At least 9 Angs (organs) of the body must touch the ground - 2 Hands, Forehead, 2 elbows, 2 knees and 2 feet. 3. The hands should be extended as much as possible, straight ahead and they should stay folded with Hazooria within them. 4. The forehead should be touching the ground. 5. The bottom (butts) must rest on the heel of the feet. The feet should be flat on the ground in such way that the front (upper side of the feet) should be lying flat on the ground. Some people have their bottom sticking up in the sky; this is not respectable. When a person is in Matha-tek Position, he should be totally shrinked towards the ground. 6. While in this position, which is also called Anjuli in Gurmat language, it is a great idea to ask for Naam, through some Gurbani Pankiti e.g. "Phirat Phirat Prabh aaiya, Pariya tau Sharnaae||". Gurmukhi way of Matha Tek - Feet are resting on the ground and notice how the body is totally submissive by being close to the ground, as much as possible: In the picture below, notice the Feet are not resting on the ground and butt not resting on heels; how awkward it looks. Of course the main thing is Bhaavnee and love but Izhaar-e-Muhabbat is also important. While Adab (respect) is important but Izhaar-e-Adab is also important. Some brothers and sisters only Matha-tek to Guru Sahib and totally ignore the Sangat by not saying Fateh to Sangat. Our tradition is to to say Fateh to Guru Sahib and also to acknowledge Sangat by saying Fateh. Bhul chuk dee Maafi jee. Guru Sahib knows the best. Kulbir Singh

When your loved ones leave to never return you know they're dead, nothing you can do, cant bring them back. Its different if you dont know exactly what their situation is....naturally you would pray for their well-being and safe return. How the hell it is moh that he wanted his dog to return?? If a family member got lost would you not do Ardaas for them to return?? [cut]akalinihang"96.

  21. Dear Sikh Friends, In case there is any Sikh American voter left to be persuaded, I just wanted to share this quick but comprehensive list of what the Obama Administration has done for our community. From reading it, I believe it will become clear that President Obama is by far the candidate most likely to advance Sikh American issues. I urge any Sikh, whether they are Democrat, Republican, or Independent, to please read it. Regardless of your political affiliation, you should know what this Administration has done for our community. Please also consider sharing this on Facebook, Twitter or email. Before I begin, two important notes of self-disclosure. First, I am a partisan. I am a supporter of the President and Democrats more generally. Second, I write this note in my personal capacity. Many of you know I work full-time for the Sikh Coalition. Nothing I write here is meant to represent the views of the Sikh Coalition nor could it. Personally held political views within the Sikh Coalition board and staff are too diverse to be characterized any one way. With that said, here’s my list of how this Administration has worked with the community: · First I would point out that President Obama’s Administration was the first in over 30 years to end the ban on new Sikh soldiers in the United States military, by accommodating three Sikh soldiers over the past four years. Check out this link http://www.army.mil/...lling_to_serve/ --- it’s so inspirational that our military under President Obama would not only end the ban on new Sikh soliders, but would highlight it on their website. While these are one-time accommodations and not a change in overall policy, they are a critical step to getting the country’s and the government’s largest employer to end irrational discrimination against our community. · On a symbolic (yet there is substance in symbolism) note, President Obama’s Administration was the first to observe Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Gurpurab in the White House and in doing so recognize the importance of Sikhs to America. · President Obama’s Administration also held the first-ever briefing on Sikh American civil rights issues in the White House this past June (see: http://www.sikhcoali...l-rights-issues). Enthusiastic leaders within the Sikh community had an opportunity to hear directly from Administration officials on their efforts to protect our rights and ask questions and engage in a dialogue. · In October 2011, the White House bused Sikh American parents and children to New York City so that they could attend a Bullying Prevention Summit organized by the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. See: http://www.whitehous...our-children. · The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission successfully settled a lawsuit against an Autozone franchise that fired a Sikh worker because he starting wearing a turban. In California, the EEOC successfully brought an action against a company that fired a Sikh who carried a small kirpan. The United States Justice Department this year successfully settled a suit against New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority for forcing Sikhs and Muslims to brand their religious headdress with their logos. The United States Justice Department also secured the conviction of a man who brutally attacked a Sikh pizza delivery worker, throwing him into a pool and almost drowning him. · Last month the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service released a new version of its Sikh American Cultural Competency training, a comprehensive presentation that has been viewed by tens of thousands of federal, state, and local officials as they work to more meaningful engage the Sikh American community. · The response of our federal government to the tragedy in Oak Creek was robust and consistent with our values as a nation. · On the day of the attack the President convened a call of his national security team and directed that the federal government assist as appropriate in the investigation of the shooting. · The President also called a Trustee of the Gurdwara as well as the Governor of Wisconsin and Mayor of Oak Creek to offer his condolences. · The President also issued a public statement condemning the attack and recognizing the contributions and presence of Sikhs in the United States. · The next day, the President issued a Presidential Proclamation honoring the victims and ordering the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff until August 10, 2012. · Over the next week the Community Relations Service of the United States Justice Department conducted two town halls for interested community leaders and members. Community members had the opportunity to ask questions directly to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the FBI Special Agent in Charge who is leading the federal investigation into the attack, the District Attorney for Milwaukee County, and a host of local, state, and federal officials. · Attorney General Eric Holder attended the Memorial Service for the victims of the attack and spoke eloquently about the contributions of Sikhs to America. · The First Lady personally visited with each of the victim’s families on August 24, 2012. I hope this list makes clear that President Obama cares about our community and has taken unprecedented steps to reach out to us. Sincerely, Amardeep Singh Director of Programs & Co-Founder at The Sikh Coalition

  24. LAHORE/CHANDIGARH: Bhai Lal, descendant of Bhai Mardana passed away Monday at Lahore's Sarwar Hospital. He was eighty-five years old and had been admitted to the hospital as he was suffering from pneumonia. Bhai Lal was the 17th generation in the family lineage of Bhai Mardana, the rababi who accompanied first Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev during his udasis. Bhai Lal had been performing shabad-kirtan (hymns) for the past seven decades. Renowned for his traditional way of reciting shabad-kirtan, Bhai Lal had expressed his last desire to perform kirtan once in Darbar Sahib, Amritsar many times but was denied the permission by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), stating that only baptized Sikhs can perform kirtan in the sanctum sanctorum. Ancestors of Bhai Lal's family had been performing kirtan in Darbar Sahib but the practice was discontinued by Bibi Jagir Kaur, during her tenure as SGPC chief. Bhai Lal during his last visit to India had rued over the callous attitude of the SGPC. The descendants of Bhai Mardana had remained rababis to all the ten Sikh Gurus and kept alive the musical instrument rabab.Bhai Lal had once performed kirtan at Darbar Sahib once before the partition of India and Pakistan. He had also performed again in 1962 during his visit to India. Listen to his kirtan open the video clip http://punjabnewsline.com/news/Bhai-Mardana___s-descendant-passes-away-at-Lahore-hospital.html

  35. Actually please read below to learn how to follow true gurmat of matha tek and bana rehit. Bhai Sahib on Bibek of Gurmukhi Baana Original Text:Original Text:Does not post... Humble Loose Translation: Wearing the weapons-laden attire (Khalsa Baana) and becoming Tyaar-Bar-Tyaar, he is made to stand in front of Guru Sahib (at the time of Amrit Sinchaar); as if a foundation (of wearing Baana) for eternity has been founded. All his life, exactly like this, he as to stay Tyaar-bar-Tyaar by always wearing Khalsa weapons-laden attire (Khalsa Shaster Baster Baana). He is never to eschew (give up) Gurmukhi Baana (attire) and never shed Khalsa Rehit attire. Same way all 5 Kakaars must stay on and should not be allowed to separate from the body even for a second. Vichaar: Here a very subtle concept needs to be recognized. Notice that Bhai Sahib has distinguished between 5 Kakaars and Gurmukhi Baana. While 5 Kakaars are part of the Gurmukhi Baana, Gurmukhi Baana is more than Kakaars alone. Some people claim that Gurmukhi Baana is limited to 5 Kakaars and beyond that there is no limit on what Khalsa wears but the truth is that there is a limit to what Khalsa can wear and cannot wear. Gurmukhi Baana is also one of the Bibeks that a Gursikh should strive to follow. One of Bhai Sahib’s sentence above is very strong – Khalsa is never to eschew Gurmukhi Baana. May Guru Sahib bless us with Baani, Baana, Sewa and Simran. What's the Gurmat way of Matha-Tek From what we have learned in the Sangat of Gursikhs, Matha-tek constitutes the following: 1. Walk into Guru-Darbar, with utmost humility, wearing Gurmukhi Baana. It is lack of fear and respect for Guru Sahib to not wear Baana in Guru Sahib's Darbar.
