Don't worry bout the Soton thing. We're trying to get the Sikh Society established here in Soton. At the mo, it's just starting up and we're trying to sort out future events.

You'll hear more in the future.

hey im a sikh girl with amritdhari rents and for my prom i bought a sari to wear, bt most guys ive spoken to have said its rong to wear sari's and well i havent heard a valid reason for sikh girls not being allowed to wear sari's

if anyone is able to give a good reason y we aren't allowed to wear saris i would love to know

they've told me tht its easier for a guy to rape you, but lyk thts not relli a good enuff arguement becoz well it doesnt happen (i know ppl r gona say tht it does and i accept tht bt lyk thts not a good enuff arguement to put me off frm wearin one u get me?)

and anova reason i got was because it makes the opposite sex look at ur sexually well to b honest anything worn will make the ova sex look no mata if ur fully covered or not

and it is possible to wear a sari tht covers mostly everything so having bare legs or stomach isnt reali a problem either

so anyone else got a beta reason?

would be happy to know

thank you

Wear what you like and tell these sexist idiots to get lost.

I personally don't like Saree's but if you want to wear them then that is your choice.

Don't wear this, don't wear that...honestly ....next we will have our own Sikh version of the Sharia Law.

Kirandeep phenji...

Wear something you are comfortable in and ask yourself if you would wear the same, do the same, in front of 'sacha pita' Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

If you thought it was ok and 'right' to wear it, then you would not have asked the question in the first place, so my answer is no. Dont wear a Sari.

Think about this... A guy's walking down the street, dressed bare minimum, bound to attract attention. A Singhni other side of the road doing simran, glances over and some obvoius thoughts spring to mind. Who would get the paap there?

And talk of does a Bana get you closer to God... You must have Bani and Bana. Papee like me have neither. I would so love to wear a Bana everyday but without Bani, Bana is useless. But with Bani and Bana comes great responsibility.

tera

i'm not following your logic behind the paap?

so if i do something that makes someone have jealousy and envy...(which happens all the time when you're me..hehe) i get the paap?

so if kirandeep wears a sari..and some pervert starts checking her out..she gets the paap?

i don't follow your logic...maybe i misread what you said...but pls clarify...

"does GGSJi say nefink about it?"

we should all make an effort to read what Guru Saheb says to us on a daily basis through sehaj paath. if we do that then most of these questions are answered, even though issues like sari-wearing and prom-attending aren't mentioned specifically. an understanding of Gurbani is attained and then you're pretty much sorted. it's so important to know what Guru Saheb says. quoting bits and pieces of Gurbani is good, but not enough. it's important to have the full account and to understand every aspect of a Gursikh's life. most of us make little effort to do sehaj paath and until we do we're going to be stuck, and cannot progress further.

Gurbani = Shabad Guru.

kiran, in answer to your question, start wearing bana. that's the khalsa uniform, laid down for us as sant-sipahis. it encourages us to follow Guru Saheb's path, because we know we must act according to Guru Ji's will - which can be explored in greater detail when reading Gurbani.

of course, there's the issue of going to a prom in the first place which can probably occupy another thread. personally i can't see Guru Gobind Singh going to a prom. we should ask ourselves what the purpose is in whatever we do, and should always act as if Guru Gobind Singh is standing with us.

There is nothing wrong with going to the Prom. Going to the prom is just a way of socialising and marking the end of a period of your life at school or college and a way to say goodbye to friends as you move on to the next stage in your life. Sometimes I worry that people can take things too literally and suggest that innocuous things are forbidden. I do not believe that Guru Gobind Singhji wanted us to live apart from society and not to partake in the rites of passage and socialise with friends and have fun.

i'd like to say..that the PANTH hasn't even figured out what bana is...collectively...

every jatha, every sampardha has their own bana...some wear all white..some wear cholas, some wear all blue...

so what bana means to one person could be different than what bana means to somoene else...and all are valid...cuz there's been no directive from akal takt..and all the quotes from gurbani where guru ji talks about clothes...guru ji doesn't forbid the clothing..or styling...he's talking about where our minds are concentrating...our gurus lived like kings..yet their humility was that of a beggar at the door of waheguru...it doesn't matter how fancy your clothes are..they say NOTHING about your avastha..and even if you wear a chola yet don't do anything a khalsa should be doing...it doesn't increase your avastha by wearing the chola...

personally...for me my bana means having my panj kakkar on me at all times...

if yours is different..that's cool...

but making broad statements like " you should wear guru ji's bana"...isn't very directional...maybe people can outline what they believe to be bana when they tell someone to wear bana...

    • Net pay after taxes. If you don't agree, think about this: If you were a trader and started off in China with silk that cost 100 rupees and came to India, and you had to pay total 800 rupees taxes at every small kingdom along the way, and then sold your goods for 1000 rupees, you'd have 100 rupees left, right? If your daswandh is on the gross, that's 100 rupees, meaning you have nothing left. Obviously, you owe only 10% of 100, not 10% of 1000. No, it's 10% before bills and other expenses. These expenses are not your expenses to earn money. They are consumption. If you are a business owner, you take out all expenses, including rent, shop electricity, cost of goods sold, advertising, and government taxes. Whatever is left is your profit and you owe 10% of that.  If you are an employee, you are also entitled to deduct the cost of earning money. That would be government taxes. Everything else is consumption.
    • No, bro, it's simply not true that no one talks about Simran. Where did you hear that? Swingdon? The entire Sikh world talks about doing Simran, whether it's Maskeen ji, Giani Pinderpal Singh, Giani Kulwant Singh Jawaddi, or Sants. So what are you talking about? Agreed. Agreed. Well, if every bani were exactly the same, then why would Guru ji even write anything after writing Japji Sahib? We should all enjoy all the banis. No, Gurbani tells you to do Simran, but it's not just "the manual". Gurbani itself also has cleansing powers. I'm not saying not to do Simran. Do it. But Gurbani is not merely "the manual". Reading and singing Gurbani is spiritually helpful: ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਭਾਖਿਆ ॥  ਗਾਵਹੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The Lord's Bani and the words are the best utterances. Ever sing hear and recite them, O brother and the Perfect Guru shall save thee. Pause. p611 Here Guru ji shows the importance of both Bani and Naam: ਆਇਓ ਸੁਨਨ ਪੜਨ ਕਉ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਲਗਹਿ ਅਨ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਪਰਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ The mortal has come to hear and utter Bani. Forgetting the Name thou attached thyself to other desires. Vain is thy life, O mortal. Pause. p1219 Are there any house manuals that say to read and sing the house manual?
    • All of these are suppositions, bro. Linguists know that, generally, all the social classes of a physical area speak the same language, though some classes may use more advanced vocabulary. I'm talking about the syntax. That is, unless the King is an invader, which Porus was not. When you say Punjabi wasn't very evolved, what do you mean? The syntax must have been roughly the same. As for vocabulary, do you really think Punjabis at the time did nothing more than grunt to express their thoughts? That they had no shades of meaning? Such as hot/cold, red/yellow/blue, angry/sweet/loving/sad, etc? Why must we always have an inferiority complex?
    • I still think about that incident now and then, just haven't heard any developments regarding what happened, just like so many other things that have happened in Panjab!
    • There was a young Singh from abroad who went to Anandpur Sahib Hola and got into a fight with some Punjabis who were playing loud non-religious music. He had bana and a weapon or two. There were more of them than him.  He ended up losing his life. Don't be like that. Not worth it to fight manmukhs. @californiasardar1 ਮੂਰਖੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਲੁਝੀਐ ॥੧੯॥ Argue not with a fool. p473
