This topic was started in another thread ("2013 Calender.."), and it had nothing to do with that thread. So please discuss it here instead.

where did the word DEV in the name of the sikh gurus come from.

From what I understand the names were

Guru Nanak

Guru Angand

Guru Arjan

Now where in Gurbani or history does the word DEV comes - so where has this word DEV been associated from.

Thanks

Let us discuss.

Let me attempt to explain this in some detail. Please bear with me.

First of all, what a hypocrit. He himself keeps on saying "ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਹਿਬ", "ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਾਹਿਬ" and "ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਸਾਹਿਬ".

The key word there is what?

Why is he adding Sahib? Is it written anywhere in Guru Granth Sahib Jee? is Guru Nanak SAHIB written? Nope. Then if he can add the word Sahib out of respect, then why can't someone else add the word Sri (or Shri) or Maharaj, etc? Purely hypocritical on Dilgeer's part.

You see the trend, this whole "Guru Granth Da Panth". Once you start basing every little thing on Guru Granth Sahib Jee, then you might as well change more than 75% of Sikhi today.

That's what they want to do. They want to limit your mind to Guru Granth Sahib Jee and not have you read anything else.

However in this case, it seems like Dilgeer can't even read Guru Granth Sahib himself properly, let alone understand it.

Now before going into it, here is some background. It's a very simple concept.

When Guru Sahibs would go around for parchaar (far and wide), they would adjust their parchaar based on the type of people they were intereacting and communicating with. The way they would speak would change as the congregation changed. Guru Sahibs spoke many different languages and within those languages are common words. And within each individual languages are different way of pronouncing words based on ones upbringing and lineage/ancesttry. For example, within Punjabi, Hindi and Urdu are many very commonly shared words, and sometimes they are pronounced slightly different depending on which language you speak. Also, within individual languages there are different pronounciations of specific words. For example, let's take the Punjabi language. You must have in your life at one point heard someone speaking Punjabi slightly different than yourself and pronounce common words slightly different than yourself as well. Well that is most likely because they are from a different area, a different upbringing, or a different caste. Yes I said it. Caste. Even though we don't "believe" in it, it still does make a big difference in one's upbringing and one's experience through family traditions and lifestyle. From how we speak, dress, eat, etc. It all gets affected with caste/lineage.

Now, Guru Granth Sahib Jee is the best example of all of this.

There is Gurdev, Gurdeo, Dev, Deo, Sev and Seo. It all just depends on where you come from and how you are raised. They are just slight differences but mean the same thing.

Let us examine closely what Dilgeer said, he is writing alot at once and it can really confuse the reader.

In the first half of his article he keeps on pulling out Gurbani tuks and keeps on trying to show where commas or bishraams go. By doing this he sneakily misinterprets lines on purpose.

One prime example:

(2 side notes.

1. Notice how he puts Sahib in brackets in an attempt to show his respect.

2. See how he is putting in his atheist views by stating this He made the translation garabh-joon dukh to the fear of death/reincarnation. Typical missionary mindset as they don't believe in reincarnation or any type of mystical concept.)

So, in that line, look at how he purposefully misinterprets and mistranslates it. He says that the "Dev" after Arjan goes with "Guru" which is after Dev. Are you kidding me? I'm pretty sure if the writer wanted to call Guru Arjun-Dev Jee "Gurdev", then he would have just done so. Let's stop making up silly theories.

And so we are talking about the writer. Who is the writer?

Bhatt Mathuraa. And what did all of the Bhatt's do? They praised the Guru's. Bhatt Mathuraa is praising Arjan-Dev who is Guru. I think it's absolutely ridiculous for Dilgeer to say that Dev with Gur AFTER IT means Gurdev and that "Dev" is with Gurdev and not with Guru Arjan-Dev Jee's name.

Dilgeer stretches things so far just to try and prove his point that it makes him look silly.

So now for this line he again makes the word Nanak alone and has Guru separate and ਦੇਉ separate. That's just stretching it. Same as the last example. That somehow "Guru" is going to skip the word Nanak to attach to ਦੇਉ in order to mean ਗੁਰਦੇਵ.

Who wrote this line? Guru Angad Dev Jee. And it is very clear that Guru Angad Dev Jee is praising Guru Nanak Dev Jee in this line. Dilgeer is really just stretching things to try and prove his point.

There are other examples of the Guru's praising Guru Nanak Dev Jee and the path which he started.

Here are just some examples:

http://sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=4232

If you want to go with that philosophy, then how about Guru Amar?

Right? Not Guru AmarDaas. Why not? Many times Guru AmarDaas is referred to as "Amar" in Guru Granth Sahib Jee. Read all of Bhatta-Dey-Saveyey, Bhai Gurdaas Jee Vaars and you will see.

Now watch, one of the biggest lies in this article. Just by this next point you will realise how much Dilgeer is twisting things for his own agenda.

He keeps on pointing out that it's ' ਦੇਉ ' and not ' ਦੇਵ ' written. In this article this is one of his main tactics. But as I pointed out earlier....ALOT of the time, Dev and Deo are the same thing....Gurdev and Gurdeo are the same thing and Sev and Seo are the same thing.

Don't get fooled by Dilgeer.

And what about Bhai Gurdaas Jee's Vaars?

They make it FULLY CLEAR that it is Guru Nanak DEV Jee.

These two Shabads TOTALLY prove the above theory wrong. Oh look, now he's talking about doing ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ just to try and prove his point when everyone knows that the missionaries don't actually believe in Naam Simran/Abhiaas.

What are you going to believe from someone who says the following in his article:

Bottom line is this:

The Jot is the same. The Jot was Guru.

The bodies names were Nanak.....HarRai, Hargobind...etc.

Therefore, Jot + Body = Guru Nanak, Guru HarRai, Guru Hargobind.

Out of respect we use terms like Sri/Shri, Sahib, Maharaj, Dev, Jee etc.

Therefore, Jot + Body + Respect = Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Jeeo Maharaj, etc...

It's not a big deal really. These missionaries are just trying to always stir something up and make small little things into bigger things. And also through these types of small little articles they plant their propaganda seeds into the reader's minds which can clearly be seen from Dilgeer's article.

As soon as they see the word "Dev" they start getting all offended and uncomfortable and relate it to "Hinduism/RSS/Baabey", the same way they do with Dasam Granth.

It's a non-issue. Keep an open mind and read lots of literature.

Dilgeer made this list to back up his theory:

It's pretty funny, because most of the time these missionaries go against almost all of the Janamsaakhis, yet look at how many he listed. On top of that he listed much more literature.

Yet, I doubt he fully researched or read everything from that list word-for-word.

He just listed all of that to make himself look credible in my opinion.

What a "historian".

Missionaries/<edited> sheer paranoia, insecurity complex, hindu phobia is unbelievable, next thing these goons will do is remove guru from nanak sahib ji and add prof label infront of nanak to remove any association from ancient indic traditions ...what a pile of protestant/victorian ferengi scumbags...they are without any doubt reincarnation of <edited> and victorian/protestant ferengi paid missionary tattu chapli sikhs. ..!!!!!!!

Fateh . . .

Tony aka moi did say this as it was a question which I was seeking clarification on.

In our Ardas the names of the Gurus are given as first names. All around SGGS the writers name is listed as the name not as full name.

My question was merely seeking clarification: as the word DEV in Hinduism does mean devta.

My concern here is that we need to educated; understand the concept behind; and it can be done by intellectual discussion.

Yes I agree that we can use any word for respect be it SAHIB, or DEV, or Ji, or anything similar.

I am not convinced by the above explanation as it seems somewhat hearsay, and it does seems to be the writers views for which he does choose somewhat madeup theories.

Happy to discuss further and accept an intellectual convincing answer.

2. See how he is putting in his atheist views by stating this He made the translation garabh-joon dukh to the fear of death/reincarnation. Typical missionary mindset as they don't believe in reincarnation or any type of mystical concept.)

Plz give the exact translation.

    • WJKK WJKF Sangat Ji, I bought a brand new medium Artisan Kirpan (8.7 inches) from https://thekhalsaraj.com/products/black-g10-ultra-durable-kirpans 2 months ago, and it is in unused condition. I bought it 2 months ago and it is in unused condition, with everything that came with it still fully sealed. I even paid extra to get it ੴ ਸਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ  laser engraved on the blade. This cost me £370 including shipping from the USA. It is in brand new condition, but I no longer need it since I have been gifted a new Buddha Dal-made Pesh Kabz for free. I am selling it for £250 even though it is in brand new condition - it is a first-hand Kirpan. From the official website, it costs £370. The handle is indestructable G10 fiberglass, wielded to a razor sharp blade (edge and tip) which is engraved with the custom Gurbani. Please reply if any Singh/Kaur here would like to buy it - it's 100% first hand but £120 reduced price. Includes a an embroidered padded case for airport travel, a blank certificate of ownership, maintenance brochure and a beautifully decorated black/grey adjustable Gatra.   I sent this advert out to a few places, and also asked some retailers if they'd like it, so it may go soon. Please do reply if anybody is interested, more than happy to answer questions too! (Note: the pic is from Google but is exactly what the Kirpan and Gatra both look like - the one I have is still in the packaging).

    • WJKK WJKF! How long will this forum remain online for in a readable & accessible state? It appears susceptible to shut-down. It would be a shame if all the forum's content from over the decades is lost in such an event due to servers hosting this forum shutting-down. This forum, whilst not currently active, remains an important repository of the Sikh religion online. It also is a fundamental aspect of Sikh cyber culture that existed from the early Internet period from the 2000's to 2010's before the domination by big social-media sites that consolidated the community. Thus, have the web-masters of this forum considered archiving this forum's contents before it is lost forever? I can assist you in this by saving the content to the Internet Archive on your behalf. Please let me know your thoughts about such an endeavour and I hope you may consider the possibility of archiving the forum for posterity. Future generations of Sikhs and Sikh researchers will be grateful. Kind regards, Theth Panjabi (you can find me on IG at theth.panjabi and on X/Twitter at ThethPanjabi)
    • Video on the tale, gurdwara, and manuscript: link As the story goes, during the Vadda Ghallughara genocide against the Sikhs perpetrated by the Afghan Durrani Empire on 5–6 February 1762, not only were Sikh lives lost, but our original Damdami Sahib Bir recension was also lost in that carnage. However, over the years I have spent researching our history, many claimed it was taken back to Afghanistan by Ahmad Shah Abdali's troops as loot whilst others said it was secretly hidden somewhere by the Singhs for safe-keeping. As of today, it remains untraceable and I presume it is gone for good. However, I came across a couple of articles stating that there were actually around five master-copies of the original Damdami Bir, with one of these copies being safeguarded by the jatha of Bhai Sudha Singh of the Shaheedan Misl. "It is said that the tenth Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh had got five birs written at Damdama Sahib. The bani (writings) of the ninth Sikh master Guru Tegh Bahadur were incorporated in these birs. These five birs were given to different jathas (groups) of Sikhs by Guru Gobind Singh to be safely installed. One bir was being taken by Sudha Singh who was leading a jatha of 19 Sikhs, when Abdali'[s] forces stormed Kup-Rohira and killed thousands of Sikhs. Though all 19 Sikhs were massacred by Abdali, Sudha Singh somehow brought the bir to Kuthala. Since then it has been kept at village gurdwara." (Times of India, 2012) The gurdwara today [Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Sudha Singh Ji in Kuthala] has a certain historical manuscript that they claim is one of the five master-copies of the Damdama recension. You can see close-up shots of the bir in the video posted. I will also share close-up images of its folios in the comment section. I will also provide a faithful English translation of the video's narration so non-Punjabi speakers may benefit from this post. I will leave the question on whether this bir is authentic or not to your judgement but I will provide my own analysis below.   English translation of the video's narration: The Guru-form Guru Khalsa Holy Congregation (Sadh Sangat) Ji, Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. The Gurdwara Sahib that the congregation is currently beholding is situated in Village Kuthala, near Malerkotla, in the Sangrur district of Punjab. A very great treasure is preserved within this Gurdwara Sahib. The history of this Gurdwara Sahib is very closely related to the Vada Ghalughara (The Great Holocaust) that took place in February 1762. Baba Sudha Singh Ji, the third head of the Shaheedi Misl, arrived at this location considering it a safe place. He brought with him that sacred holy scripture (Saroop) which the Tenth Father, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, had personally dictated to Bhai Mani Singh Ji on the holy land of Damdama Sahib. Upon arriving, he personally performed the last rites (cremation) of 19 martyred Sikhs at this site. As he prepared to leave to take command of the Jatha (the Sikh contingent), the sacred holy scripture he had brought was enshrined at this very location. At that time, this place was known as Dera Jaga Sidh, but nowadays, a very beautiful building stands here in the name of Gurdwara Sahib Shaheedi. The sacred holy scriptures that were enshrined at that time are today ceremoniously displayed (Prakashwan) with great respect every Channi Dashmi (the tenth day of the bright lunar fortnight) for the congregation to behold. Devotees from within the country and abroad arrive to catch a glimpse of these sacred scriptures and receive the Guru's blessings. Every year, an annual Gurmat Samagam (religious congregation) is held for five consecutive days in memory of the martyrs of the Great Holocaust, concluding on Magh Sudi Dashmi. Furthermore, a book containing the full detailed history—titled after Shaheed Baba Sudha Singh Ji and the Hand-written Holy Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji—was released in February 2013 by the managing volunteers based on historical research. It was released by the 14th head of the Shaheedi Misl, Singh Sahib Baba Makhan Singh Ji (the current head of Baba Bakala Sahib), the Meet Jathedar Singh Ji, and Sant Gurdev Singh Ji of Anandpur Sahib (the current head). The congregation can obtain spiritual benefit by reading it. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.   My analysis: In my humble opinion (which may be incorrect), this bir is not a master-copy of the Damdami Bir. It more closely resembles the highly-decorated birs of the Kashmiri-style that were created during the reign of the Sikh Empire in the first half of the 19th century. We can see this bir has highly illuminated and illustrated angs (folios), which took the great skill of a master artisan to make, which required resources to pay and patronize. Usually, the manuscripts during the Sikh Empire were the most elaborately decorated, as this was when the Sikhs were at a high-point, masters of the land, possessing vast amounts of resources that they could use to fund such endeavors. Therefore, whilst the story may be true and a master-copy of the Damdami Bir recension may have once been at this location, I am not convinced that this particular manuscript is it. I may be mistaken and I am open to constructive criticism. 1633648456_GurdwaraHistory.mp4
