Sikhs to get ethnic status in British census forms in 2021.

then how would you differentiate between punjabi muslims/hindus in that count?

Most Punjabi Hindus identify as Indian anyway, as in India, they put Hindi instead of Punjabi as their language.

Punjabi Muslims would rather put Pakistani. I've actually seen a trend with Pakistani Muslims and they want to be like Arabs (because they want to assimilate I guess).

So 90-99% of people who identify as Punjabi will be Sikh.

By this logic, there should be no problem putting Punjabi as an option. This option is technically sound and rational.

Putting Sikh has no basis

Look at the last Census, where does it have for example, Jew? It doesn't. Arab makes sense as it is a certain people from a geographical location.

Putting "Punjabi" under C is what we should be advocating for.

This would make it more difficult to have the tick box if we insisted on Punjabi as an ethnicity. By putting this forward we would face the usual mischief from the Punjabi Hindus who are always happy to sabotage anything that benefits Sikhs. If we insist on Punjabi then the government and census authorities will be duty bound to consult with Punjabi Hindus and they taking their orders from the Indian government will take the line that there is no need for a Punjabi tick box as they do not accept Punjabi as their ethnicity and they are happy with the present arrangement of having an Indian tick box. This would be enough for the government to decide that the Punjabi tick box is not needed and we would be back to square one. Punjabi Muslims also would need to be consulted and the Pakistan government which doesn't even teach Punjabi in its schools would be highly unlikely to support the Punjabi tick box.

So Sikhs face the dilemma, try and get a Punjabi tick box and face the certainty that fellow non-Sikh punjabis will sabotage this and even in the very unlikely event that we succeed and get the Punjabi tick box the data which will be available will be for all Punjabis. The non-Sikh Punjabis might or might not tick the Punjabi box but the government will use that data to tackle discrimination against Punjabis and NOT Sikhs. What we need is data about the discrimination that Sikhs face because we face more discrimination than non-Sikh Punjabis. What we want to know and what we want monitored is for example is how many Sikhs work in a particular company and not how many Punjabis work there.

Organisations both in the public and private sector use the same ethnic tick boxes that are used in the census. The campaign for a Sikh ethnic tick in the census is not so that we can know how many Sikhs have their own homes, what their qualifications are and how many cars are there in their households. These figures a already available, it is that we want private and public organizations to follow the census lead and start to count the number of Sikhs in their employ and the type of jobs they have.

A few years ago Sikhs naively tried to enlist the Jewish organizations help and use the argument that both Jews and Sikhs are classed as ethnic minorities in the UK and so both should get a census ethnic tick box. The Jews straight away rejected that demand and one does not need to look far for a reason. The Jews don't want to be monitored as they already have the top positions far in proportion to their population! This is not something that Jews would want officially publicized. So if the Jews in order to protect their positions are able to reject a Jewish ethnic tick box which is their right then why do Sikhs have to be so politically correct and aim for a Punjabi ethnic tick box which does not even help them and not aim for a Sikh ethnic tick box?

Can we get numbers on how many Punabi Hindus there are compared to Sikhs.

We have to stop these Hindus from screwing around with our <banned word filter activated>, they won't even put Punjabi down anyway just like their Indian counterparts.

They have no right to speak on such matters.

But that's the reason why a Punjabi ethnic tick box would provide the Punjabi Hindus an opportunity to meddle in our affairs. It's difficult to estimate how many Punjabi Hindus there are in UK as their numbers would depend on whether you consider the Ravidasis who are mid way between Sikhism and Hinduism. I would estimate that there are probably 75,000 Punjabi Hindus without the Ravidasis but they still retain their nuisance value with regard to Sikh affairs.

Although there were 426,000 Sikhs in the UK in 2011 only 273,000 put their language as Punjabi.

The bulk of the HP (non Ravidasia)are the Khatri types, who fall between being Sikh and Hindu because they have relatives who are Sikh.

Everyone is just being silly now. So sikhs are always moaning about their distinct identity not being recognised and now that we may get recognised as a separate group people decide to disagree. If we get this then this will be a nightmare for those Hindus who desperately insist that sikhs are Hindus.
