The case prosecutor outlined the case and asked the judge to keep Sidu to be kept in jail.

In total he faces seven charges including death by dangerous driving and driving while under the influence of drugs - a police press release last week said he had tested positive for cannabis after being caught.

The initial report also said he had failed a breath test having 44 mg of alcohol in his blood when the limit is nine but there was no mention of driving while under the influence of drink in the charges.

Sidhu, did not speak during the hearing and was represented by Andreas Laos and Eleni Toumpi, while his parents sat in the back of the court and listened to proceedings.

Sidhu was provided with a translator and apart from his arm in a sling appeared to have no other injuries.

He was also accused of having no insurance, dangerous driving endangering the public, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to ensure the damaged buggy was identifiable to other road users, fleeing the scene and not informing police.

Following the incident last Wednesday police issued a photograph of Sidhu which appeared to have been taken at a hotel pool.

Sources said he was held just before 11.30pm, almost six hours after the incident which happened close to Aya Napa's main strip which full of bars and pubs.

Camilla, who was on holiday in Cyprus with her five-year-old daughter, was rushed to Famagusta general hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

The rental buggy had overtaken a stopped car on Wednesday night before fatally hitting Pamdahl on a pedestrian crossing on Ayia Napa's Nissi Avenue

The mother, from Västra Götaland County in Sweden, had left her five-year-old daughter with staff at the hotel's playground so she could buy some groceries but she never returned.

Images from the scene show the twisted remains of the buggy next to the pedestrian crossing and another car.

The rental buggy had overtaken a stopped car on Wednesday night before fatally hitting Mrs Pamdahl on a pedestrian crossing on Ayia Napa's Nissi Avenue.

A police spokesman said after the tragedy: 'A young man driving the rental buggy overtook a stopped car, and hit the woman.'

Judge Oikonomou ruled that Sidhu should remain in custody until next Thursday where he will appear again and enter a plea and the court heard the maximum sentence he could face would be four years for the most serious charge.

His parents declined to comment and Sidhu was later driven away in a police car.

The venue for the case was the same court where a British girl was tried and accused of inventing a rape case three years ago.

British tourist jailed for one year after Napa hit-and-run

By Nick TheodoulouJuly 1, 202234 Comments4410

A 26-year-old British tourist has been jailed for one year after he was found guilty of the hit and run which killed a Swedish mother on holiday.

Police confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that the Briton, named as Manraj Singh Sidhu, was sentenced on Monday and was found guilty of multiple serious charges – with his driving licence also suspended for 18 months.

Camilla Christina Pamdahl, 46, had left her five-year-old daughter in the care of hotel staff so that she could cross the road and visit the nearby supermarket.

Sidhu was found guilty of carrying out a dangerous and reckless act which resulted in the death of a person, reckless and dangerous driving, and abandoning the scene of a fatal crash, among many others.

He fled the scene on foot but was tracked down by police a few hours later.

Britain’s Daily Mail spoke to Pamdhal’s husband, Jonas, who has expressed his shock and dismay at the seemingly lenient sentencing.

“How can this happen? How can the judge only give one year? It seems to me they have rushed through this case and no matter he pleaded guilty. What about our family?” Jonas told the Daily Mail.

The incident occurred on May 5 at a pedestrian crossing on the main artery of Nissi Avenue in the coastal town.

He fled the scene on foot but was tracked down by police a few hours later. An alcotest identified a reading of 44μg, more than four times over the legal limit of 9μg, and a drugs test returned positive for cannabis.

Jonas further expressed his shock at the sentencing, stating: “I’m not sure the judge looked close enough into the circumstances. I’ve heard that he said he had served to avoid a stopped car, but he still hit Camilla on a pedestrian crossing”.

Police previously stated that the driver failed to stop at a pedestrian crossing where the woman was attempting to cross. “A young man driving the rental buggy overtook a stopped car, and hit the woman,” they said.

The Swedish woman was taken to Famagusta general hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Photos showed immense damage to the rental buggy, with the front completely caved in.

    • Been so much nindya and attacking Shastarvidiya since the 2000s, however if we look at gatka now it's still mostly as poor and poorly taught as it was back then, still morris dancing moves and still behzti moves in BBC shows about sikhi and vaisakhi. If people were going to attack shastarvidiya, wouldn't have made sense to improve gatka instead and make it more effective? Additionally, the Nihang Singh presence has improved greatly now, and the cracks within the the SGPC and affiliated jatha jathebandis are showing more greatly as panth becomes more knowledgable with dasam bani and itihas day-by-day, so much gyaan which was lost within panjabi sikhs during colonial times. In the 2000s, the groups were able to talk down this bani and  gyaan by associating it with  RSS and hindus, brahminwaad etc. Not working so well now is it? However with gyaan it would be also good for us to try and preserve our martial arts and keertan vidiya as well! More and more crazy keertan videos are coming out from jatha members that are being made fun of and making sangat annoyed and upset, on tiktok and instagram reels.

Being from Punjab, almost every Sardaarji i know (amritdhari or not) sleeps/showers with their hair uncovered. I don't think Guru Sahib asked us to wear Dastar to sleep and I don't think it is in SRM.   The idea of "keski being worn to sleep" is cos in Bollywood films (Bachna Ae Haseeno) Sikh characters usually tie a gol parna when sleeping since the actor's usually Hindu. So they gotta cover his head somehow or he'd have cut hair. Same reason Diljit wore a pagg to bed in the El Sueno vid. Only time they didn't do that was in Gadar with Sunny Deol which just looked odd tbh   What in the world? What sikh or even a decent human would base their knowledge of their culture or religion on a movie industry, that too Bollywood?  Believe me, no sikh ever said, I must cover my head becasue an actor did so in a movie. I've been doing it all wrong, I must start covering mh head because the sikh in that movie did.  Just because every panjabi and sardaar you know, does something, also doesn't make it right..  Follow the guru. And if you have a medical condition, then exemptions can be made.  Just admit it, because of my medical condition, I am not able to follow this rehit. Why are you getting everyone else to drop to your level?
    • Wasn't Guru Arjan Dev's martyrdom on amd always commemorated on 6th June? How come it was 30th May?  Just like 6th June 84, where the likes of Terrorists like Indira Gandhi chose to attack Darbar Sahib where many many innocent Sikhs would suffer, as they went to commemorate Martyrdom of Maharaj.
    • best thing is to follow the Sikh Rehat Maryada and use common sense for gray areas. Anything outside of that's irrelevant tbh that code is what Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the 5 Pyaare agreed on when creating Amrit in 1699
