  1. I have always wonderes as to why have i never seen any woman granthies at Darbar Sahib . Then i came to know that they are simple not allowed to be . Given the great virtues of equality our Gurus gave bestowed upon us, i fail to understand why there is this discrimination at our most important Gurudwara . Why doesn't anyone do something about this?????????

  2. Sangat ji, Whilst the idea of having projector screens during bhog time has helped increase understanding in Gurdwara around the UK, not entirely what other countries do, I think we should go one step further and do this throughout whole sri akhand path sahib. I'm sure the lack of understanding including my own has not entirely pushed people away but left them deviod of the precious teachings and understanding out Guru can give. Whilst many have this hunger or yearning for spiritual awakening they tend to find it on another path or elsewhere in another faith they can understand or relate to. We need guidance/help in knowing what our Guru is saying.. Is their technology, CD's out there for this... your opinions please..............

  3. TO DONATE: http://www.justgiving.com/sopwreena The real identity of persons has been disguised for safety of the individuals. Names mentioned below are fictitious but the details of the ordeal this family have been through are very real. SOPW has reached out to support them financially and emotionally. SOPW brings to your attention the case of Mrs Surinder Kaur, who is in her 50s. The people she trusts referred her case to SOPW. We cannot reveal her real identity (all names have been changed) or location, as she and her family are still afraid of police intimidation and abduction. Mrs Surinder Kaur is in desperate need for help and fears for her safety, the details presented below are intentionally vague to protect her identity. Mrs Surinder Kaur has one daughter and one son. Her son was arrested in early 2000 in connection with a known Sikh political prisoner; he is currently in jail. Mrs Surinder Kaur’s daughter; Miss Reena Kaur is aged over 30, unmarried and unable to get a job due to her psychological condition and continued suffering. In addition to Mrs Surinder Kaur and her son, Mrs Surinder Kaur's daughter was also a victim of torture by one of the most brutal police officers; ACP Rajvir, who was killed in 2008. ACP Rajvir placed a gun to Miss Reena Kaur's head and threatened her to come alone to the police station or else her family would suffer. Miss Reena Kaur was forced to come to the police station weekly for 6-8 months, what she endured is known only to her and the police officers involved. We do know from other cases that sexual violence, torture and intimidation of family members is a tactic that was used widely by the Indian police and security forces against Sikh political prisoners and their families. Miss Reena Kaur has been incredibly brave in coming forward, in light of the continued threats to her safety and the stigma in the Punjabi community attached to victims of such abuses (as demonstrated by her inability to get married). We can only guess at how many other victims are suffering in silence and hope they have the strength to come forward. Punjab is still an area of impunity. In early 2000 Mrs Surinder Kaur was first diagnosed with cervical cancer. She was treated in Hospital where she had an operation and many subsequent radiation therapy treatments. For this operation and treatment Mrs Surinder Kaur sold all her gold to meet the costs, which were around 3.5 lakh rupees. Currently Mrs Surinder Kaur is suffering severe side effects and has developed other health problems due to the radiation therapy. She has intestinal problems and has been defecating via her urinal tract. This has resulted in her having to carry a sanitation bag, which has to be emptied regularly. Mrs Surinder Kaur is in a very unfortunate situation and requires urgent medical attention. A specialist cancer Hospital in Delhi has recommended an urgent operation, which will cost approx. 3 lakhs. We appeal to you for your support in helping Mrs Surinder Kaur with her medical costs, which will be around £4000.Miss Reena Kaur is very proud and has said she, nor her family are a charity case, but if you would like to donate we will ensure your donations reach Mrs Surinder Kaur as a gesture of support and love from the Sikh Community. We would like to thank you for your continuous support. NB The real identity of persons has been disguised for safety of the individuals. 5. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Urgent request to write to your MEPs: Balwant Singh Rajoana to be hanged on 31 March at 9am in Central Jail, Patiala For those on email send the attached letter (reproduced below) to all MEPs in the region in which you live (there are 12 regions in the UK). The SIkh Federation (UK) has already written to all 73 UK MEPs as we have regional contacts to cover all 12 regions. To get contact deatails for your MEPs use your postcode by visiting: http://www.writetothem.com/ and write to ALL MEPs in your region Alternatively use the following link: http://www.europarl....=GB&webTermId=7 This campaign will be more successful with your help as it is essential we have a very high volume of letters sent to MEPs as soon as possible. PS. The SIkh Federation (UK) is co-ordinating similar actions of Sikhs wring to MEPs across mainland Europe. Please note the five actions in the letter and in particular the last one: Peaceful protest outside the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday 28 March between 1-3pm. Please make travel arrangements for this protest. Urgent Action: India to hang Balwant Singh on 31 March 2012 I am writing to express my deep concern that it was confirmed on 13 March that India is preparing to break its moratorium on the death penalty by hanging Balwant Singh on 31 March at 9am in Central Jail, Patiala. Balwant Singh was a close friend of Dilawar Singh, a serving police officer in the Punjab Police who in 1995 killed the then Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, who was responsible for the mass genocide of the Sikhs in the 1980s and early 1990s. In recent years Amnesty International has welcomed the lack of executions in India, with the last one taking place in 2004, but expressed its concern that at least 50 death sentences are passed each year by the Indian courts. By making this announcement India is signalling to the world, including EU Member States, that when it comes to Sikh prisoners it is prepared to break the moratorium and reverse the trend to abolish the death penalty. There is a real risk this may open the flood gates and allow India to execute the likes of Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar. His case has been highlighted by Amnesty International and raised with MEPs on a number of occasions as he was illegally deported from Germany. He has now been in prison for over 17 years and been on death row in Tihar Central Prison, New Delhi for over nine years. This most recent announcement also comes on the back of the pre-mature release last month of Kishori Lal, who was awarded the death penalty in the murder of three Sikhs with a chopper knife on 1 November 1984. Many in the Sikh community feel the Indian authorities are blatantly targeting Sikhs and many countries around the world, including EU Member States may stay silent as they do not want to jeopardise trade with India. I urge you to: i) write to Baroness Catherine Ashton, the Vice President and European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, for her to immediately raise with India the EU’s concern about the execution of Balwant Singh planned for 31 March; ii) arrange for parliamentary questions to be raised in the European Parliament and for a strongly worded resolution to be passed in Parliament similar to that for Professor Davinderpal Singh Bhullar on 7 July 2011; iii) write to the Indian High Commissioner in the European Parliament expressing your displeasure regarding their decision to break the moratorium on the death penalty by hanging Balwant Singh on 31 March; iv) contact Amnesty International and other international organisations that oppose the death penalty to launch an urgent campaign on behalf of Balwant Singh; and v) join Sikhs from across Europe for a peaceful protest outside the European Parliament in Brussels on Wednesday 28 March between 1-3pm. Yours sincerely MEPs letter India to hang Balwant Singh on 31 March.pdf

  8. Man its horrible to say its OK for him to just be hanged, im mortified, the issue here isn't so much him being ok, with being hanged, its a brave man, who stares at death and smiles, its more the injustice, letting this happen like the other countless injustices, this will not change anything. Imagine if the people who pass sentences on Sikhs just because they are Sikh, read these statements, they would see as fine there own people dont to much care, as they see it as shehedi. Screw that, Justice for All regardless if they want it or not

  10. I think they're using the same 'theme' (in terms of visual front-end) as this site. I clicked a link to sikhawareness from a thread on this website to read something about Maharaja Ranjit Singh and I thought I'd been returned to this site by mistake! Don't know why they've done it because I remember vaguely that sikhawareness.com was distinctly different to this site from a visual perspective at least.

  11. So if they want you to talk. Perfect talk about Guru Sahib and Sikh history. But be careful, sometimes it can turn into you are trying to teach others and you can lose yourself in the ego. So start every sentence with Satguru said, Gurmukhs said, I learned from Satguru, I learned from a Gurmukh, Rehat says.... This way you always give credit back to Satguru and tell yourself, I am the lowest of the low. Talk to your mom about what took place throughout the day, but then put a SIkhi spin on it. Like how Satguru would have handled the situations you were put in. This will make your mom happy and you can continue on SIkhi by analyzing your actions. Ask your mom about specific events of Sikh history. Use a similar strategy with your friends. Eventually they will get the point that regular talk is boring for you and might just get the hint that I also should start reading Gurbani to see why she is so deep into it.

  14. Everyone has there own reason. No one can tell you why you should believe in God. It's not something that can be rationally explained. For me, it's because I love Waheguruji, that's why I believe in God. But for someone else, it can be a different reason. It something you have to feel and discover for yourself

  16. KaviSingh, how do you know? Kindly post any references that prove ONLY men did kirtan in those times. Do you think that during Guru Amardas Ji's time the Sikh Bibis who held a Peeree did parchar but for some reason they were not allowed to do Kirtan? Why is there such an allergic reaction to Bibis? We need to learn to be Sikhs of Guru Sahib and not blind followers of Sanatanism. We Sikhs keep making up rules as we go along, and then state that it is puratan maryada from Guru Ji's time. Take a look at the picture below from the 1970's. It has Bibi's sitting with the Singhs doing Kirtan at Sri Dabara Sahib. During that time one of the Bibi did do Kirtan, she was an American Sikh Bibi. Nowadays they will not even let a Bibi sit in that area. So much for equality or "Puratan Maryada". (Above) Sikh Bibis sit along with men reciting Kirtan at Sri Dabar Sahib during the 1970s. This is no longer allowed. (Below) Sikh Bibis recite Kirtan outside Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

  17. Important to remember throughout Sikh history our Guru Sahibs have shown us the way how to survive events that may challenge the kaum. Guru Hargobind Sahib’s first sermon must be heard again today and applies just as much now as it did when he first gave it. Guru Arjan Dev had been brutally tortured and embraced martyrdom, becoming an example for the Panth. The Sikhs were grief-struck and felt a sense of despair. The small Panth of Guru Nanak had been targeted by the mighty power of the Mughals. Guru Hargobind Sahib, became the next Guru as per the orders of his father. In front of all the gathered Sikhs, Baba Buddha jee put the two swords of meeri and peeri on Guru Hargobind Sahib. Guru Sahib was dressed like and emperor and there was a kalgi (aigrette) on his dastaar. The Dhadis, Bhai Abdullah and Bhai Nath Mal, at the hukam of Guru Hargobind Sahib sang a vaar filled with bir ras. Then, Guru Hargobind Sahib rose and gave his first sermon to the Sikhs: “Today the offerings that are beloved to me are good weapons and good youth. If you want my happiness, then exercise your bodies, wrestle, play gatka, go into the jungles to hunt and learn to ride horses. Weakness is now a crime to the Nation that cannot be forgiven for anyone. You will take up the sword and I now wear the sword so that the swords of tyranny and oppression will stop forever. You have all come from far and wide today. The cool tranquillity has been stolen from not just your heart and my heart, but from the entire world. Our swords will not rest until we bring this oppression to an end. Make day and night one. Go into the villages and light the inferno of revolution. Tell the people that we need their youth. Only that is a good youth that sacrifices itself for the cause of the Nation. We need sacred hearts and pure minds. Enshrine Waheguru in your hearts. We fear death because we have not experienced true life. We feel worry because we have not enjoyed a taste of life. We feel fear because our destination and goal seems so far off. But if you challenge death, death will flee from you. If you learn to walk with your heads held high then worry will depart. If you are determined to walk, the destination will not be so far away. Have faith in Vahiguru and all fears will vanish. If fear has left you then even death will seem like bliss.” Guru jee continued, “Do not think that you are too few. You are all like springs. Oceans flow out of these very springs. There are hundreds of thousands of springs like you in our Nation. When you come together and flow forward, you will create a flood. A small and insignificant piece of wood, when made into a match, can light the entire jungle on fire. But you are humans! And furthermore, those humans whose heart has just now been scorched on hot iron plates [reference to shahidi of Guru Arjan Dev jee]. Addressing the poets in the Sangat, Guru Sahib said, “See, God has given you the gift of poetry. When nations are built, you are the foundations. Stop all these other untimely songs and work to bring the Nation out of this deep dark pit. Tell those stories which will make the people willing to lose their skin like they would be willing to change their clothes. Fill the people of our Nation with the spirit and fervour to be like moths so they will sacrifice themselves in the flames of our cause. Our blood has become cold. Tell us stories of Shahidi and become the furnaces that will boil our blood. Give us the passion to make the trampled Punjab and our crushed Nation rise to its feet once again.” Speaking to the Dhadis, Guru Sahib said, “Now is the time that your instruments should call out a challenge. Your notes should stir the Nation. The beat of your dhads should awaken the people and the bells on your bows should make hearts fill with the zeal of sacrifice.” We must hear Guru Sahib’s message again today and rise to the challenge.

  27. Shut up!! the post reads SIKH FREEDOM FIGHTERS!!! The 13 singhs thats got mytered in 1978 amritsar Ram Singh ji was a great mahaan gursikh from our Sikh history. Only the Namdharis have distorted our history and put a title of "Guru" under bhai saahib. Ram Singh ji did not declare himself as a guru, it was the people after he had passed away that put this false title on him. He has done a lot as a SIKH for the freedom movement at that time against the british. Ya, that should say Bhai Ram Singh Ji NOT Guru. Hope that clears it up

  31. Singh# I disagree. Udham Singh was a Sikh freedom fighter, he wasn't to know what treacherous behaviour was to take place in the future. He avenged Jallianwala Bagh and showed the goray that they couldn't just do that and get away scot free. Look at how today, so many people bowl around who have butchured Sikhs. If there were more Sikhs like Udham Singh this sh1te wouldn't happen. Bhagat Singh was not a Sikh feedom fighter by most accounts (except Bhai Randhir Singh's). He was a Marxist from a Sikh background.

  32. Thing is, if you are going to use media then you have to do it with style. Just making a film that is mediocre would actually cause more damage than good. If it is done properly someone from any culture should be able to watch it and go wow i.e. 300, Braveheart. If we look at the generally crap quality of Panjabi films compared to others, we can see we are a LONG LONG way off from being able to do that. I think only people from Sikh backgrounds in the west have any chance of pulling it of, but not anytime soon.

  33. yeah, i remember, shaktiman was known as first superhero of india.... about sikh heros, i think we should encourage those who r doing this work for us.... visit http://www.sarblohwarriors.co.uk/ .its all about a sikh game which is going to launch in the end of this year... no, its not a flash game... its like any other high-quality computer game... and i think its good attempt to promote sikhism among kids.... and about a superhero like shaktimaan, i think its good to think about it but one question strikes my mind... if we make such a hero, it will do supernatural things (thats the way shaktimaan got popular) and in sikhism, our guru's have taught us not to show any karamaats.. then how can we show someone do such things...
    1 point
  34. but i dont think the way hindus promoting lord shri krishena and lord hanuman is correct ... they have made them a cartoon character .... some times i feel offended .... lord hanuman is such a big yodha and bhagat but now a cartoon character playing with other kids .... not good
    1 point
  35. Haha I remember Shaktimaan, used to love him! They have more shows like that nowadays, one on Bal Kishan (krishna when he was a kid and was a prankster) and I think one on Ganesh when he was a kid...either Ganesh or Hanuman, I can't remember the advert for it... It's these things that teach little kids about their religion while they're young (the most crucial years). there are efforts being made by Sikhs to do sort of the same thing, i.e. Sunny the Proud Sikh, Chote Sahibzade, The Rise of the Khalsa, but quality-wise, since there isn't much support, its not the best. Vismaad is going to release Sundri early next year - watch out for it!!!!!!!
