  1. When Ram Rai, the eldest son of Mata Krishen Kaur and Guru Har Rai Ji, changed a word of a Gurbani tukh to appease (the usurper of the Mughal Raj) Arungzeb, Guru Har Rai Ji excommunicated him from Sikhi. Baba Ram Rai was Guru Sahib’s own son yet he had disrespected Gurbani which is considered the highest form of direspect in the Sikh Faith. Baani Guru, Guru Hai Baani. BUT we forget one important thing, Baba Ram Rai was punished so severely because he KNOWINGLY did the wrong thing. Being Guru Sahib’s son he was well aware of the crime he was committing and therefore it was a choice. Sadly majority of our community today is ignorant of our faith and it’s history. So how then can we hold individuals responsible when they disrespect Gurbani and thereby the True Guru unknowingly? Our response must be different because the Guru is just and never angry toward those who commit a mistake unknowingly. It is counterproductive to curse the bride and say “she deserves to rot in hell” or that “she is a stupid <banned word filter activated> who should die”. This only perpetuates ignorance and division within our community. We must as a community take responsibility and educate ourselves and others to make sure incidents like this never occur again. As for incidents regarding to Anand Karaj, Anand Karaj is a very big commitment that we have dumbed down to “the Punjabi Marriage Ceremony” and by doing so we have turned it into a ritual, something often the bride and groom do without true knowledge. The Anand Karaj is a commitment ceremony that binds the souls of the couple, you are not only committing to each other but making the HUGE commitment of accepting Guru Sahib as your Guru, to follow “his” teachings and keep “him” in the center of your new married life. Each part of the Lavaan gives you a different teaching which you hear out while you revolve around the Guru like the earth revolves around the sun and you commit to that teaching, saying you fully agree with it and will embody it the moment you bow your head before the Guru and Matha Tek. The “pheray” or parkarma around Guru Granth Sahib was not always part of the ceremony, it was added and is merely mirroring your commitment. The palla shows the connecting of two souls, you walk around Guru Sahib to show “he” is the center of your life. The reason walking side by side doesn’t work is because you both will not be equidistance from Guru Sahib, one person will be further. The woman walking behind the man is not inequality because it simply mirrors a Gurbani tukh. Also in the greater context of Anand Karaj one can see inequality is not an issue. As I stated before, we are viewing our religion through a western perspective without the knowledge and historical context of our religion. Furthermore, another way to look at in a western perspective is “Behind every man is a strong woman…and boom now it’s liberating. I would like to state once again that ignorance is the root of all the confusion and division in our community. If it pains you to see Guru Granth Sahib disrespected then take it upon yourself to educate others of Gurbani and Sikh History. Do your research so you can know about the faith and institution you claim to be a part of. I would like to end this by saying once again, disrespect to Gurbani and thereby the true Guru is the highest crime. I will leave you with one other example of how much respect our Gurus had for Gurbani. They were always stating that they are nothing, Gurbani, the word of Waheguru is everything, worship and follow Gurbani not their physical forms. Baani Guru, Guru Hai Baani. When Guru Arjun Dev Ji, the 5th Guru was bringing Aad Granth (half of Guru Granth Sahib organized into a saroop) to Amritsar, Baba Buddha ji carried Aad Granth on his head while Guru Arjun Dev Ji did chaur seva (waving of peacock feathers). This shocked the sangat that was walking alongside Guru Sahib because chaur seva was something that was only done to the Guru or to Kings and yet here was the Guru doing chaur seva to what appeared to be a book! Then when they ended the daily events at Amritsar, the Sikhs asked Guru Arjun Dev Ji where they should put Aad Granth for the night. Guru Sahib responded, Aad Granth will rest on my bed, I will sleep on the floor beside it. OUR GURUS SHOWED TIME AND TIME AGAIN THAT GURBANI IS THE HIGHEST. Today we have largely forgotten this and disregard Guru Granth Sahib, we neglect our Guru by remaining ignorant of “his” teachings. 2. While no doubt Muslim Punjabis are the majority of Punjabis. They have been blessed with their own Raaj or sovereign state that is on the world map. They dominate Pakistan. They are in ideal position to promote the Punjabi language. Unfortunately, that is not what we have seen so far. Urdu not Punjabi has been made the official language of Punjabi dominated Pakistan. An educated Punjabi Muslim prefers to speak Urdu because he will consider Punjabi as an uneducated language. I've seen many Punjabi Muslims who speak Urdu with their children. Furthermore, Punjabi Muslims consider Urdu as an Islamic language even though great Sufi Saints of Punjab wrote in Punjabi. Muslim Punjabis have merged their identity with the wider pan islamic one. Out of the Muslims, Hindus and the Sikhs, the Sikhs in Punjab are the only nationalist Punjabis. So many Sikhs have been martyred for the implementation of Punjabi language in Punjab. Sikhs are the only ones who make a case for the promotion of Punjabi language, culture and identity. In the west, all the Punjabi classes that are being taught are being taught by the Sikhs. Globally all the Punjabi literature that is being produced is being written by Sikhs. And this despite that fact that only 14% of Punjabis are Sikhs. There is no ethnic identity without the language. And for this reason Punjabi Muslims will not be the future of Punjabi identity, language, culture or nationalism even though they are the majority. There are some Punjabi Muslims who are nationalistic about Punjabi language. A writer named Asif Shahkar is one of them who want to promote Punjabi language. Unfortunately, such men are a minority among Punjabi Muslims.

  3. Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa has been on Hunger Strike for 30 days now to get innocent Sikhs released from the Indian Jails (most of these Sikhs have served close to or more than 20 years in jails). However, we are not seeing much support in Punjab or the West. Last time when he went on his hunger strike, the British Sikhs showed their support by going on hunger strike too. I am getting more and more convinced that Sikhs have lost their pride (ankh) they will rather talk about some Christmas tree than Sikh issues which have real impact on Sikhs!

I had everything but still wanted more screaming, crying my heart was sore I'd explain but nobody could understand just get back to normal they'd demand my friends told me its just a faze it'll go away but to me it felt as if it had full plans to stay the problem to me was unknown maybe my anxiety had over grown I took on all the advice id made notes and sometimes even ask twice days, weeks ,months went by all my strengths were gone, I couldn't even cry go home and rest my teacher would say i'd leave the classroom hoping id get run over on the way I could clearly see what I needed some peace of mind I pleaded everyone gave up on me, myself included the idea of 'all will be fin' was deluded every 4 a.m. I'd be awake this was serious my life was at stake i'd be idle and just lay there what did I do to deserve this its not fair! it became a routine until on sunday everything was dark and gloomy and I had a urge to pray I sat down, legs folded, and heard myself repeat a name waheguru waheguru I said as I had all about its fame suddenly there was an energy in me that I could feel the worries I had in my mind it would steal unexpectedly the doorbell rang quickly I opened my eyes and in my heart I felt a bang the day ended and the night was pitch dark everything was silent today and not even the dog would bark The remaining day I felt a unique sensation it was as if I was a new creation In the morning there was a change I was up at amrit vela doing nitnem it was strange From a young age japji sahib and chaupai sahib I commonly recited To learn the remaining 3 to complete my nitnem I was extremely excited I knew it was difficult but I had to learn to reach my goal I knew I had to be firm You only had to take one step towards the guru I heard, in return he's fly to you like a bird I was so eager instead of steps I leaped the Guru played his part too and the pains from my path he sweaped From the inside and out I felt a change negative with positive thoughts I exchanged in what colour glasses I wanted to see the world was my choice So all I did was searched inside me for the Gurus voice All he preached was righteousness, love and bravery It freed me from my evil self, for whom I did slavery I felt the was my father and I his child I was so peaceful and I couldn't help but smiled taking amrit was now the next step being part of the khalsa would be something id be proud to repp the process of getting it all sorted was so easy and fast after finding out I was amritdhari , are you sure ? my friends and family asked I showed them my kara and said i'm handcuffed now theres no going back nobody still understood me but I knew I had got my life on track Without fear on my head was a keski that I tied I wore it happily with honour and pride I have faith that by choosing good over bad it cant go wrong now all I pray for is to stay strong......

  6. unfortunately it has become a current trend to bait SIkhs by bad-mouthing Mahapurakhs such as Sant Isher SIngh Rara Sahib wale , Sant ji, and others . One can look at whether the Mahapurakh spoken of brought people to sikhi or to some perversion of Guru ji's message , whether they direct to Guru's charan or their own ... after all all the sakhian show one should not test such a Purakh but there are nishaani that gurbani shows us , that the true nature of a person of high avasta will have.Ultimately we should improve our avasta so we will know what that avasta is.

  9. thank you i like this saaki too .... Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were a father and son who were beloved Gursikhs of Dhan Dhan Satguru Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj. Although these two Gursikhs were very poor materialistically they were very rich spiritually. On one occasion they had travelled to be blessed with Guru Ji's darshan. After arriving in Guru Ji's darbar and kissing Maharaj's charankamal they did a benti to Guru Sahib to bless their village with his holy presence. Maharaj smiled at his two beloved Sikhs and accepted their request. In the presence of his Sangat Maharaj told all the Sikhs that they would be going to Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji's house on such and such a day.Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji headed home with tears of happiness as they had been blessed by Maharaj with such a mahaan seva. Many times we often question how we will be able to do a seva that Guru Sahib has himself given us. But look at these two beloved Sikhs of Guru Sahib who didn't have any maya to their name begging Maharaj for this seva. Bhai Suman Ji and his son Bhai Moosan Ji began to work day and night on the land of a rich man. Every day they would take the Name of Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj on their lips and would not stop working for sleep or food or water. With Maharaj firmly implanted in their minds all they thought about was the seva that they had been blessed with. After working very hard in this way finally the day of their payment had arrived. Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji had planned to use this money to buy all the things they required to make Guru Sahib's langar with their own hands. When they went to see the rich man to collect their payment their clothes were dripping with sweat and had been stained with blood from their limbs. The rich man opened his door when he noticed Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were coming, looked at them and simply refused to pay them for the work that they had done. Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji were heartbroken and went home. They were deeply saddened not that the rich man had refused to pay them but that they would not be able to perform Guru Sahib's seva. After a while they though to themselves that the money they are owed is their right. They soon made a plan to go back to the rich man's house in the night to take what was rightfully theirs. At night Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji used a ladder to climb into the house of the rich man. Bhai Moosan Ji went in first, slipped and was dangling from the rich man's ceiling. As Bhai Moosan Ji was dangling he began to hear voices and realised that the rich man's family had woken up. Without a second thought Bhai Moosan Ji looked up to his father had said, "Pita Ji cut my head off". Bhai Moosan Ji had asked his father to do this as he knew that if the rich man came and saw him dangling there word would get around that Sikhs of Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaj are thieves. This is the love Gursikhs have for their Guru. Bhai Suman Ji knew this too and quickly took out his sword and with one blow cut his son's head off. This is the love Gursikhs have for their Guru. Bhai Suman Ji wrapped his son's head in a cloth and went home leaving his body there. When the rich man came out he saw a dead body which had been decapitated on the floor. He then began to think that if people come to know that there is a dead body in my house they will think that I am a murderer. With the help of one of his servants he put Bhai Moosan Ji's body on a cart and decided to take the body to the house of Bhai Suman Ji and Bhai Moosan Ji as these were the only honest people that he knew who he could depend on. When he arrived at Bhai Suman Ji's house he gave Bhai Suman Ji the money that was owed to them. He then told him that there was a body that he had bought with him in the cart that he wanted them to get rid of. Bhai Suman Ji took his son's body from the cart and into his house. He then placed it with the head of Bhai Moosan Ji that he had brought back and covered both with a sheet. Bhai Suman Ji did an ardas to Maharaj and thanked Guru Ji. He then began to make the langar for all the sangat who were due to arrive the following morning. In the morning Bhai Suman Ji's beloved Guru arrived with his sangat. As Guru Ji was about to have his langar he looked at Bhai Suman Ji and said, "Suman where is your son Moosan I haven't seen him. Go and call him." Guru Ji then turned towards the house where Bhai Suman Ji had covered his son's head and body and started calling out to Moosan. As soon as Guru Maharaj did this Bhai Moosan Ji came out of the house and bowed together with his father Bhai Suman Ji at the charankamal of their beloved Guru. Akho Satnaam Sri Waheguru ji.

  11. If you're taking the train from London, the station the train stops at 'Gare Du Nord' is not too far from te place you find the Sikh community and Gurdwara (between Gare Du Nord and Le Chappelle). Bearing in mind the French legacy in parts of south India (pondicherry) and Mauritus and the Seychelles etc, that area has always been home to Paris' fairly large Indian community since the 1960's (99.9% south Indian), but the Punjabis that arrived in the last decade or so also settled there (in very small numbers). Other than that, you'll meet Punjabis under the Eifel Tower (illegaly selling small statues of the Eifel Tower) or at the entrance to Disneyland (ironicaly also selling small statutes of the Eifel Tower). I saw so many all doing the same thing I'm just amazed the ones in London are not selling small statues of the Eifel Tower. The only real hardship you'll face is finding vegetarian food. People in restaurants (including McDonalds etc) will give you weird looks like you're mad when you ask what vegetarian stuff they have. The answer is they don't have any and you're probably the first vegetarian they've ever met in their life.

If you only read in English I recommend getting you mind together and hit up some Punjabi its much easier even if you dont knkow it but still both can speak the language of love and if your attuned with love then you sometimes cant tell which language someone just spoke but rather you connect to their soul and what they are saying.. Mad props and my heart goes out to anyone else who posts more Mahapurkhs here. Thank you for the OP for starting such a beautiful thread.

  21. I'm assuming you work in a call centre environment or something similar, as someone who has friends and family that work in similar environments I'll throw in my pennies worth, couple of things: -The fact that the caller had Singh in his name is irrelevant, just because someone has Singh as their middle name doesn't mean that they never shout or use bad language -If this person has made a complaint against you your first port of call should be to HR (or similar) and request a copy of the complaint and a copy of the conversation (if recorded) -Read your work contract, your employer has a duty of care in respect to abuse in the workplace, this includes customers who are abusive over the phone -If you feel it's all going to go south, contact a solicitor, in fact, contact a solicitor anyway -If (let's hope not) you end up loosing your job over this the and Industrial tribunal is your main avenue of re-course but only go down this route if you can prove that your employers unfairly dismissed you, sometimes it can cause more damage if you loose. As someone whose worked from the ground up in my chosen sector for the past 20 years i've been through the mill a few times but i tend not to fall back on the old "racist" card neither do i assume people are "nice" just because they are from a certain background, instead i educated myself on employment law and what my rights are, i suggest you do the same, in the long run you'll benefit. Good luck with it fella.

  23. The life of Sant Teja Singh Ji His holiness Sant Teja Singh Ji was born at Pohir, district Ludhiana, on 17 Jan. 1927 into the household of Sardar Ram Singh and Mata Sant Kaur. He completed his primary education from the village school. He learnt (to recite) the Gurbani and its recital (Kirtan) under the tutelage of Ghani Gyan Singh of Gurdwara Sahib, Mandi Ahmedgarh. After spending the early years of his youth in Calcutta, Syalkot and Mussouri, he returned to Pohir. As a child he used to accompany the village congregation to Rara Sahib. But in 1948 he finally resolved to settle at Rara Sahib under the aegis and patronage of Sant Isher Singh Ji and undertook the devout services of the sanctum sanatorium. Delighted with his services the patron saint made him in charge (Shrimaan) of the community kitchen (Guru Ka Langar). He dispensed this service regularly for six years. He also served in the farm of Gurdwara Sahib for a brief spell. Sant Teja Singh Ji has been keenly devoted to the Gurbani. Besides the 'Banis' of 'Nitnem' and 'Panj Granthi' he has learnt most of 'Shri Dasam Granth Sahib' by heart.Sant Isher Singh Ji used to be charmed by his recital of Gurbani. It was Sant Teja Singh Ji's love for the Gurbani that brought him closer to Sant Isher Singh Ji. Besides reciting Gurbani to his patron and mentor, he prepared meals for him. He used to accompany his mentor and perform the 'ardas' at the termination of each congregation (The Diwan). After Sant Isher Singh Ji left for his heavenly abode, Sant Teja Singh Ji was entrusted upon the services of the 'Bhora Sahib', which he is performing hole heartedly to this day. On 10th January 1990, all the religious organizations, the chiefs of different Sikh communities, the sangat of the surrounding areas and Gurdwara Karamsar Rara Sahib Trust bestowed all the responsibilities of care and service of the Gurdwara upon Sant Teja Singh Ji. Despite spending most of his time in the Bhora Sahib (the privy chamber of Sant Isher Singh Ji) the present Sant Ji is shouldering all the responsibilities of Gurdwara Sahib perfectly well with the co-operation of the 'Gurdwara Karamsar Rara Sahib Trust'.

  24. whether a person is from Uttarkhand, France, China or Bhar ultimately they will want to learn Gurmukhi to be able to read Gurbani in the original ... I don't deny people need to know Jagat Guru dhan dhan Guru Granth Sahib ji and the temporary phase of needing translations until they can understand Gurmukhi is understandable and should be catered for , but you really are not coming across as friendly, open or really wanting to learn just ready to attack those who would like to read in Guru's letters . Hope you get some peace someday soon
