Gurbani says bani Guru Guru hai bani

Vaho vaho bani Nirankaar hai....

So guess who are actually doing the chaur on...

what a maha pavitar opportunity Guru Ji has given us to do seva of Nirankaar and of the Guruji.

Even the wind which we think is blowing aimlessly is actually serving God

Pavan chavro kare

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Hindu worship also involves waving of a chaur as a means to worship the idol of their faith. However, Guru Sahib is saying that all of creation is in worship of the Almighty and demonstrates such with that pauri.

That being said, Koi is spot on as to the why for Guru Sahib. The Almighty's entire creation is in worship of the Almighty through the cosmic Aarti, but Gursikhs maintain the appropriate respect for Guru Sahib through the three symbols of royalty, namely Chaur Sahib to be waved over Guru Sahib, Takht Sahib where Guru Sahib is seated, and Chandoa Sahib, which is the canpoy above Guru Sahib.

When I look at orientalist paintings of sikh era they depict Guru ji being in Parkash in the open with a chattar instead of a gazebo shaped canopy , was it like this or just imagination of the western artist having heard the tales ...?

In gurbani guru sahib says

pavan chawar kare.

then why we do chaur sahib

Bhul chuk maaf.

The physical whisk and chanani was used in olden times as a sign of Royalty for Kings, the main purpose still is max Satkar. The tuk refers to wind bringing sweet chandan scent passing over the mountain range (malianlo). My basic understanding is the whole Shabad can be interpreted in various ways from personal and worldly angle.
