  1. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, Please be aware The Turban Campaign is a useless organisation - they couldn't even mention the disturbing video of the indian police officer taking our brother's dastar off last week. Instead, they posted an article on their website giving Guramit Singh an ultimatum to leave the English Defence League or face excommunication; http://www.turbancampaign.com/updates/sikh-community-issues-ultimatum-to-guramit-singh-denounce-edl-by-vaisakhi-or-face-excommunication/ I'm not being funny, but who do these idiots think they are? These self-made leaders get few corrupt gurdware to sign a form and think they represent us sikhs and the guru khalsa panth? What has Guramit Singh actually done wrong? The man has put his life on the line to speak out about what is happening is every town and city up and down the country. Without a doubt, he has a huge support from the Sikhs, as we are all sick to death of these muslim gangs and islamic extremists taking advantage of our sisters and brothers. His reply the ultimatum was brilliant; http://englishdefenceleague.org/content.php?295-Never-Surrender! What has Turban Campaign or any Sikh institute done about the below; It's even happening in India; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3hJh0G_Jyw&feature=related Every gursikh reading this, think and tell me what have you done to combat the above. Only SAS have the courage to face up the real issues most us amrit-daris are scared to talk about. Keep it up Guramit - we all respect your efforts and bravery (unlike these useless scared self-made leaders). Gur Fateh Parvan Ji.

  4. Police 'hid' abuse of 60 girls by Asian takeaway workers linked to murder of 14-year-old By James Tozer Last updated at 11:12 PM on 7th April 2011 At least 60 schoolgirls were groomed for sex by workers at seedy takeaways linked to the murder of a 14-year-old girl. Children as young as 11 were targeted by mainly Asian staff at fast food outlets in Blackpool. They were offered food, alcohol and cigarettes in return for sexual favours. An unpublicised police report produced after 14-year-old Charlene Downes vanished in 2003 found the girls, most if not all white, had been victims of the ‘honey pot’ premises. There were claims last night that the report was suppressed for reasons of political correctness. Seedy: The takeaway in Blackpool linked to Charlene Downes, then 14, and Paige Chivers, then 15, who are both missing Four years later another girl, 15-year-old Paige Chivers, also went missing. Detectives believe she was killed like Charlene, whose body has never been found. Two Middle Eastern restaurant owners were acquitted over Charlene’s murder in 2007 and the crime remains unsolved. The pair still run a kebab shop in Blackpool which was also linked to Paige, and she too was identified as a victim of sexual exploitation. Last year police reported that the takeaway was attracting young girls who were being supplied with alcohol and cocaine. Victims: Charlene Downes (left) is believed to have been murdered while Paige Chivers has been missing since 2007 The revelations about the scale of grooming centred around the downmarket cafes comes amid growing concern at disturbing cases involving mainly Asian gangs exploiting young white girls for sex in the Midlands and North of England. The girls, often from vulnerable homes or in the care system, were befriended by men who showered them with gifts and affection before using them for sex. Former Home Secretary Jack Straw has said the girls were seen as ‘easy meat’, while David Cameron called on police to follow criminal acts ‘without fear or favour’ wherever the evidence leads. The Home Office commissioned a nationwide investigation into the problem, which has long been considered taboo by police officers fearful of being branded racist. Indeed, a former senior detective at Lancashire Police yesterday blamed political correctness for its failure to highlight its 2003 findings in Blackpool. But the force denied this, saying the report had been available online since 2007 but had never been intended for publication. Senior officers insisted an intensive programme to break the cycle of exploitation had been a success and that in the last six months 50 of 54 grooming suspects were white. Shocking claims made in court over Charlene’s murder revealed fears that her body had been put through a mincing machine, with takeaway staff said to have joked that her remains had ‘gone into the kebabs’. A jury failed to reach a verdict on charges that Jordanian immigrant Iyad Albattikhi had murdered her while his Iranian landlord Mohammed Reveshi had disposed of her body. A retrial collapsed in 2008 amid failings in the police investigation and the men were paid almost £250,000 each in compensation. The kebab shop run by Mr Albattikhi and Mr Reveshi has changed its name from Funny Boyz to Mr Beanz. It was refused a hot food licence last year amid fears about ‘sexual activity’ linked to the premises, but the pair blame a ‘police vendetta’ and have appealed. Following Charlene’s disappearance in 2003, police found more than 60 girls were being groomed for sex by non-white men centred around 11 Blackpool takeaways. They were mainly aged between 13 and 15, but some were as young as 11. Yesterday former Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell warned that research into the problem was being hampered by ‘political correctness and concerns about upsetting community cohesion’. But Lancashire police denied a cover-up. Assistant Chief Constable Andy Rhodes said his officers were making significant progress in tackling child sex exploitation across Lancashire, regardless of the background of the culprits. He added: ‘We recognise that in some areas the number of Asian offenders is disproportionate to the population and far from ignoring this, have been tackling the issue head on by working with the local communities, giving presentations to community forums and visiting mosques to raise awareness.’ It was reported yesterday that while most British sex offenders are lone white men, details of court cases in 13 towns showed that out of 56 men convicted of multiple offences of grooming girls for sex, 50 were Muslim, mostly of Pakistani heritage. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1374443/Police-hid-abuse-60-girls-Asian-takeaway-workers-linked-Charlene-Downes-murder.html ------------------------------------ Wjkk Wjkf, Again and again we see this. It's now the wider media and government bodies who are confirming this. All Sikhs who were skeptical at first, and thought Sikhs who spoke up on this had other agenda, please now take note. Khalsa ji, I have seen over the last few years a general acceptance within our community to i)Accept that there is a threat specifically to our children. ii) Willingness to talk about it and combat it. We must do more. The biggest threat comes from Internet grooming. Please warn all young parents of the problem. The BIGGEST threat will be on newly immigrated Punjabi families. Faujees who are brining their wives over and settling in inner city (predominantly Muslim areas) These guys are much like our parents generation who have little knowledge of grooming and internet etc. THEIR CHILDREN MUST BE PROTECTED. IT'S OUR JOB! ALL SIKHI classes, Panjabi Classes should have this included some detail in their curriculum.

  5. * There is a Video of Manmohan Singh worshipping Shiv Ling (Phallus of Shiva) * He got all of his daughters married to non-Sikhs (against Sikh Rehat Maryada saying roti beti di saanjh only with fellow Sikhs) * He told us to forget 1984 and did nothing for Sikh Qaum in that aspect. Judge for yourselves, he might be a good prime minister for his country, but is he a good Sikh for his Qaum?

  6. The Gurudwara I go to has a fair number of children with Down's Syndrome who attend on a weekly basis. Obviously they come with their parents and I think it's wonderful because it's very easy for our people to keep these kids "hidden away" from the world. It's a positive reflection on the parent's faith that they aren't blaming Waheguru for their - admittedly - difficult circumstances, as I've also heard of many Sikhs with disabled children who shun the Gurudwara as they feel God has let them down. But I don't judge these folk. Only they must know the daily struggles they face in raising children with disabilities. One can only hope those who have lost heart, find their way to His feet once again.

  16. The real turban campiagn Basically Sunny hundal and his 4 or 5 dimwits found a financial loophole while Labour were handing our grants left right and center. These grants were aimed at highlighting and combating any social upheavals within ethnic groups to maintain social harmony which played with their "multicultural Britain" ideology. They developed "think tanks" for individual religious groups. Basically Sunny/Ranna and co. would grossly exaggerate any view points that could be interpreted as extremist and tarnish the whole community with it. So ONE Sikh stands on stage and says he believes young Sikh women are at threat from pedophile grooming gangs, who target victims by race- they would take this back to Government HQ and say HORDES of Sikhs are going mental, and will kill muslims, only a matter of time before all Sikhs lose their ability to think for themselves and we will have partition style war on the streets of Britain. Please give us £££££'s and we will combat this for you, by going into the liberal media and portraying these Sikhs as extremists before they get a chance to influence more people. The dumb government paid out. These people used their liberal media outlets to lie, exaggerate and defame people just so they could go back to HQ and show what they have done. Making non-issues into media spectacles, and continuously tarnishing the Sikh community. Right now they are saying 1000's of sikhs are joining up to EDL and it's going to become a threat to national security unless something is done. And again using their liberal media to defame characters. I dont care for them stealing money from the government, but they step the mark with this Shri Akal Thakt Sahib Publicity Stunt. These individuals will now have to be addressed formally by the Panth for bringing the faith and our institutions into disrepute.

  17. Paaji, i agree, but we should have the ability to weigh up the deficiencies of others in various situations as long as our agenda is for panthic betterment. We have to realise there are many stigmas and underlying racial prejudices in society. Do you think our community are less prone to these? Imagine the door rings at 11pm at your average Panjabi households house. Look through the window, it's a big kala, or a gora. Which one is our elders going to be most weary of? We don't need to go that road, my point is, we should be wise enough to understand the complete picture, then use our resources that would best return a positive result. That is all we should be concerned with, the result. No, we should never bow down to demands, no we should never change our appearance for others, but we have enough resources in the Panth to push certain individuals in different scenarios.

  18. wjkk wjkf i'm totally against sikhchic, their journalists etc, theirs stance on everything pretty much. But there is a slight point in this article, Even though I disagree with the majority of it. The topic is likely to become an issue in the UK in the near future too, which is "Public perception". When we are pushing Sikh agenda's on which the outcome relies on voting by non-sikhs, should we not be receptive to what they may perceive as acceptable? No, we will never change our appearance to suit anyones books, but in the same light if sullahs sent a full burka lady to speak to MP's for burka rights , or a modern, well spoken non-burka lady to speak for the muslims rights to wear the burka, which one would people be more receptive too? Which one is likely to become a pun and used as scare-stories on the front page of the tabloids? I think goreh crap themselves easily.. especially since 9/11. .. the vote bank in these situation are normally made my middle class goreh..knief crime, hoodies, turbans, extremism etc etc.. all these things play to their perception. If we selected a singh who is normally is suited an booted, and wears his Kirpan Sahib underneath his shirt and used him to represent us, it is less likely the far-right types can exploit his image and use him for scare stories. And if successful it will open the gates to all Sikhs, regardless of their appearance... Media savvy tactics?

  21. Hold up, maybe i'm too harsh on Charanpal Singh, after all he is uneducated in Sikhi and the history of Canada. So lets give Charanpal Singh a quick history lesson. Charanpal Singh says we (Sikhs) are new arrivals in Canada so we should conform. Charanpal Singh must have failed social studies class back in grade 8. The British and French were new arrivals when they savagely destroyed the Aboriginal people who occupied this land way before them that we call Canada today. Here is another point. Canada does not have an identity. Canada is a nation built by different groups of people and strives on multicultural practices. When a person say to another we must conform in Canada. Then consider that person a monkey who sits on a tree branch, while scratching his monkey behind.

  22. Its a case of who is more pathetic the "turban campaign" taking this matter to Akal Takhat, or the EDL supporters who were no doubt abused by sullay in their youth but didn't have the nuts to stand up to them, hence now venting their anger by mixing in the scummy EDL crowd. Why are there no groups of Sikh youth taking up issues concerning the panth? Why don't the Sikh youth step up and fix the issues they got with the sullay themselves? For a kaum that's supposed to be full of anakh and bravery, we sure as hell look like khusray and vulnerable, no wonder everyone is shitting on us. Oh yeah should have posted that with a disclaimer bcoz as they say, truth hurts. It's about time we built our own network of youths to tackle issues, separate from jathhebandi issues. Today also marks the anniversary of Bhai Jugraj Singh Toofan's Shaheedi, a remarkably brave Singh who gave his life at the age of 20, protector of all, killers of dushts like gobind ram. So who is gonna step up?? Or we only Internet jujharoos and those who can hide in crowds???

  26. manmohan is a true congressman whos loyality lies with the gandhi family. looking like a sikh doesn't make you sikh or someone who would support a minority. He can't take decisions without congress high commands big "yes" i.e. Ms gandhi herself. Any person who is a "gulam" of anything can never be a sikh whether it is congress loyality or party loyality. Him being clean is out of question as he is from congress party who orchestrated mass murder of sikhs and it is a shame he is still part of that party and we are discussing him here.

Parents don’t they. And it is down to parents to teach them Punjabi as well, when a katha has finished a parent should ask the kids what did u learn, what words didn’t you understand! That way kids knowledge will expand. And if parents do this I’m sure there will be no talking, no gaming and no running about!

  29. Okay, I get where you guys are coming from BUT.... ...something has to be done to discourage those weird Sikhs who try and cosy up to right wing groups in the UK and make us look like clowns in the process. Now I'm not saying there aren't problems with some Pakistanis who are doing very underhand things against Sikhs (especially Sikhnis), but affiliating the Sikh name (directly or indirectly) with chavy and/or hate filled groups like the BNP or EDL seems like Sikhs shirking their own responsibility and trying to rely on outsiders to help them resolve their problems. This isn't on, especially as we did used to have guys who fought those types of tonday without any help before. Maybe the new generation are too scared to do this type of stuff on their own now? Who knows? Instead of seeking an excommunication, maybe those guys should just get a Akal Takhat representative to have a word with him like a lost confused younger brother and tell him to back off the EDL vibe then? I doubt the Akal Takhat is going to waste too much time on this. Plus let's be honest here, that Guramit has gone from being against 'militant Islam' to being against 'Islam full stop'. So now, he's just making enemies of all sullay based on what Paks are doing, which isn't smart at all. Plus if you're Sikh you need to realise that Allah refers to the same creator that we refer to as Rabh or Waheguru. Despite the fact that Islam has conceptualised God very different to how Sikhi has. Guramit going "Who the f*** is Allah!" on video shows you he has lost the plot.

  32. To do gurbani abhyaas you need time, which most do not have as we have firmly planted our feet deep with in worldly affairs. So if you have some free time, try not to let it go to waste! A month is a decent amount of time to take your avastha to a higher level Bhaji, there is no time restriction on reciting any gubani. Satguru jee says AwT phr swlwih isrjnhwr qUM ] and aUTq bYTq sovq iDAweIAY ] Reciting Gurbani is doing ustat of akaal purakh, as it is clear from the above tuks, we should be striving to do it all the time. But such an avastha is only achieved by gurpRswid I'm not sure how old you are, but please try not to turn every thread in to a joke. It's okay to be light hearted, joke around, but not ALL the time. 37. research what is the status of love between man and woman, in gurmat and you will get your answer to this. i beleive that kuljit singh has written an essay about this somewhere on the net, if anyone knows where it it, copy and paste here for sangat benefit. compatability or shared interests can become incompatibility and different interests the next day between man and wife. They are not stable, but your primary shared interest should be Sikhi, and both man and wife will learn to adjust to each others needs after mariage, that is why we are humans and not animals. it isnt the ONLY way, it is the prefered or best way. yes the great Saint, Ishar Singh Rara wale was asked about the difference in doing paath/naam abhiyaas between householders and celibates, and his Holiness gave the answer, that celibates have to do 12 years of abhiyaas to equal one year of abhiyaas by householder sikhs. So a Bhenji said on this topic she and her sister do naam simran when they come from work but can you imagine her doing Rehraas Sahib 12 times? or panj banias 12 times in the morning. there isnt one.

  43. I think you do not have an good idea on what this whole slanderous article is saying . I recommend you focus on the first part of the article where I.J. Singh makes the slanderous remark of Satguru Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji Maharaj, by saying he is JUST a mortal who died and then you should think of the latter part, of the article, which contributes to this slanderous remark of his. Also he slanders Gursikhs to get his point across. This is more than just someone's opinion. It's a well crafted attack on the Khalsa Panth's history.

  44. Would you call this fellow a academic or pseudo-scholar that wants to be percieved as an academic? This piece of writing which Sikhchic has put up for him is insulting to Sikhi on many levels. Here is the article: http://sikhchic.com/article-detail.php?id=1989&cat=12 Parsing a Parable: The Final Resting Place of Guru Nanak by I.J. SINGH Some wheat, some chaff. That's life. These are high holy days for Sikhs as we mark the birth of Guru Nanak, the Founder of Sikhi. Let's parse a parable of his life from the end of his days. We know that anything and anyone that lives a life as flesh must perish and die one day. Everyone is mortal and his or her earthly sojourn must end. So, for Guru Nanak also the time came for an end to his earthly existence. But this unique man continues to inspire millions even today. It was no different when the time came to die over 500 years ago. His message was common to mankind and people flocked to him from both religious traditions that made up society across the Indian subcontinent then - Hinduism and Islam. Nothing surprising in that so far. Then, tradition and history tell us, at his death a quarrel broke out between his followers who had been Hindus and those who had come from Islam. This tells you how hard it is to transform or reinvent oneself. The baggage of the past accumulates in life and it isn't always easy to shake it off or see clearly through its fog. So what? You might ask. Nanak was no more but what to do with his body; his followers loved him so much. The Muslims wanted to bury him in accordance with Islamic requirements and rites. The Hindus wanted to follow the Hindu way and cremate Nanak. Emotions ran high; compromise was not on the table. It is rightly said that people will argue for religion, wrangle over it, fight for it, kill for it and even die for it but they will not readily live for it. The war of words over Nanak's body lasted through the night. In the morning, when they lifted the sheet that covered Nanak's corpse, there was no Nanak but only a bunch of fresh flowers. A miracle, the people thought, had saved them. They could divide the flowers - those who came from Hinduism could cremate them, those who came from Islam would bury their half. Both were satisfied. Hindus erected a memorial to Nanak; the Muslims erected their own. The two stand even today, next to each other. What a wonderful tribute to Nanak; the man, his life and his work. This is what our tradition tells us. I have never heard a differing version. This is what I have heard all my life. It is what I have personally used to describe how awe-inspiring Nanak must have been. And everyone celebrates the visionary Nanak who inspired such reverence in those who were traditional enemies amongst themselves. It seems to me today that some vitals are missing in the story. These are things that make me wonder at the nexus of fact and fiction that might have produced the parable. This wonderful story that mixes so beautifully history and myth unravels before my eyes. Let's probe some factoids of history that we know to be true - they are evidence-based - but find no place in the parable. I don't see how they could have been irrelevant to the story that has been imprinted in our consciousness for half a millennium. We know Guru Nanak was a married man, a householder with a wife, Sulakhni, and two grown sons, Srichand and Lakhmidas. Did they have an opinion on the last rites for Guru Nanak? He had also passed the mantle of Guruship to Bhai Lehna and installed him as Guru Angad. History doesn't tell us how many hours, days or weeks Guru Nanak outlived the moment when he personally nominated and installed Guru Angad - delegating to Angad the office and its authority along with the responsibilities of the Guru. Notice that the parable informs us of disagreements between his followers who had come to him from different faith traditions. But it speaks not a word about what Guru Angad might have said or done to dampen the fires. Guru Angad must still have been at Kartarpur because Guru Nanak's mortal coil must still have been there waiting to be laid to its final rest. That could have been one of the earliest if not the first responsibility of the second Guru. What did he say or suggest? The parable says not a word and nor does history, about what Guru Angad said or did. Was he not in the loop? Guru Nanak's two grown sons also must have been there along with their mother - Guru Nanak's wife. Did they have an opinion? What was it and how did they (the family of Guru Nanak) express their preference? The parable offers nary a word. To me, these questions leave the parable awfully and unexpectedly incomplete. I know that parables come from the heart (faith) while history emerges from the head (evidence); they often merge, sometimes seamlessly, and become integral and inseparable elements of a culture. They both provide us magical and informative windows to a people and a time, and yet either, alone, remains incomplete. Accuracy and reliability are different matters altogether. This is the way all cultures (and religions) are, whether it is Sikhism, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any one of the varieties of human religious experience. Sikh belief and practice often mix evidence-based history with what is only circumstantial and sometimes even with what is clearly neither history nor evidence but is merely a habit of the heart. Sometimes the mixing is so intimate and flawless that the intervening seams all but disappear. My opinions derive their credence from a perusal of the legends of Ramayana and Mahabharata, in the Hindu tradition, the mythology of Genesis in the Old Testament that is the founding document of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as the enchanting mix of fact and fiction in Sikh traditional lore. Does unraveling of a foundational parable in Sikhi make me uncomfortable? Not at all! We are speaking here of the commonality of human existence through time and culture and across the seas. The study of history tells us that history itself gets altered by the process of studying it. Much as an experimental animal reacts to the expectations of the observer, similarly history uncovers itself to reflect and fulfill many of the views of the scholar who parses and records it. Even the best evidence gets tainted in the process. Such evidentiary bias is universal. History and parables, even though they overlap at the periphery, are entirely different processes and serve different purposes. Parables are morality plays; their role, no less important than history, is to provide us an easily swallowed sugar-coated pill. As examples, I point to Biblical writing in Genesis, events of the birth of Jesus, or his arising from the dead. These are clearly not history; to weigh them on the scale of evidence would find them wanting, even silly. As morality plays, such matters remain supreme - ask any believer. The Dutch historian Pieter Geyl tells us that history is an argument without end. He is right or else history would become a closed black book; our connections to the past would then become tenuous, the present lose all meaning and the future would have no legs. I know many readers will be uncomfortable with my unraveling a dearly loved and beautiful parable of the life of our Founder-Guru that carries a timeless lesson on religious tolerance. But keep in mind also my unquestioned love for Guru Nanak. I am reminded of some words of the poet Richard Lovelace: "I could not love thee, Dear, so much, Loved I not Honour more ..." [Here Honour stands for Duty.] If the Ramayana or Mahabharata reflect the background and biases of the authors, just as the authors of Genesis had their own worldview that colored what they imagined, similarly the legendary poet Santokh Singh, writer of Suraj Parkash, or the oft quoted mystic Bhai Vir Singh had their own lens thorough which they saw the world. And don't underestimate the biases and the colored glasses through which any reader (that is, you and me) reads and internalizes what is written. T.S. Eliot tells us: History has many cunning passages, contrived corridors And issues, deceives with whispering ambitions, Guides us by vanities. Think now She gives when our attention is distracted And what she gives, gives with such supple confusions That the giving famishes the craving. There is also the other side of the coin, to which he further says: We shall not cease from exploration And in the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Separating wheat from chaff, like unraveling strands of history is a never-ending task that every generation must do for itself. But it is not work; it is a pleasure. ijsingh99@gmail.com November 22, 2010

  45. Why have people on here come so rigid. Someone ask's a question and they are accused of having a hidden agenda. I'm asking someone to explain how/why/ to who the practice of aarti is done on the riverbanks. Jaswinder Singh, you have not answered my question. Without asking, no one will learn about Marayadas. So be patient and if I have some ill intentions then they surely will show in my post.

  46. Before you pass comments on what I wrote, read what I wrote.. just go back and do it now... I did not talk about 'financial gain' ....... I wrote about how this Prime Minister's economic policies have alleviated poverty in India. Yes, poverty.. I also spoke about the National rural employment guarantee scheme he has introduced - which guarantees every rural household a minimum level of income.....and I also wrote about the reforms to the power sector which he forced through at great political cost....if you have ever been to the Punjab you will know the impact that power shortages have on farmers and poor people (who can not afford diesel generators). I am not suggesting Manmohan Singh is perfect (I agree, more should have been done to combat corruption in India)...but on balance, he has been a successful Prime Minister who has done many good things....and inequality has increased in India, but 40% of the country's population today have a middle class lifestyle where they can spend money (which in itself creates jobs for working people who can then feed themselves). If basic human rights rank so high for you - then you will agree with me - because some of the most basic human rights are the right to food, shelter and clothing - things that he has done much to improve.
