Sikh Family in Eastenders

Recommended Posts

So thier is Sikh Family in Eastenders  who are badly portrayed in very Indian  stereotypical manner. the father of the family is in Jail. the Eldest son has Dastar(kheerat)  the other 2 sons are mona's  . The daughter is a doctor who is bi-sexual and in relationship with a muslim girl. The mother is just pure evil who faked having cancer so her kids would not leave her.

The family run 3 business  which are

1) call centre

2)convient store

3)landlords renting houses

amongst this the youngest son is know for doing insurance jobs.

The latest scandal saw Jags go to jail as he was framed  (Robbery )insurance job  which went wrong  which was undertaken by the youngest son. jags was framed and reported to the police by his own mother as he was in love with a Muslim girl.

is too far fetched and does not portray  UK Sikhs Punjabis  in the right manner. BBC

I don't watch Eastenders.

But some of the characters do fit into the BBC white middle class playbook. Basically, these are the brown people for the white people.

Some of these type of characters have been shown on the BBC and Channel 4 since the 80's.

You have the gay and the taboo relationship with someone from a different religion/colour/culture.

I guess some of these goreh have "curry fever", lol

Sikhism is diverse,  dont expect real Gurmukhs on the show, because its a show,  entertainment.

I'm writing a comic atm about superhero who a sikh and grows into a Gurmukh

This is a win-win-win for the BBC.

Hits diversity quotas, another dice to roll to help ratings and they can now say the show is a better representation of east London.

What do you expect from this show?

It's low class drama. The British equivalent of those awful Star Plus programmes.

Apart from the bisexual part, everything listed can sadly be true in our community especially amongst those who own businesses.

If it represented the east end..there would be no white folks on the show... The signs would be Bengali and the queen Vic would be a gastro vegan pub or converted into a 'community welfare hub'

nah the pub would be a russki bar ...the local shops would be either polski, or turkish rather than gujrati and british of the 1980s, a Few years back I went for an urban art tour in the east end and the speaker totally skipped over the fact that gujrati , east african indians traded in the wholesalers on petticoat lane during the 60s and 1970s just jumped straight from Hugenots to bengalis ...sorry but you cannot erase Indian contributions to the East End too .

I remember watching the reruns back in the early 90s. The funny thing is that the bully ended up playing Mark in Eastenders.

you've got confused , the bully was a weasel faced guy  with a crew cut , 'mark' had a regular haircut in GH

Todd Carty was Mark in Eastenders  and susan Tully his sister

If Eastenders was authentic both Jkv and Dally would be on the show.

not sure 'bout Dally but it's in my birth neighbourhood , I would have been a cockney as I was within the sound of Bow Bells but I'm not fussed I talk 'posh' for  an eastender because I don't swallow my Ts ...these days southall and essex folks sound more cockney than east ender folk IRL.
