Punjabi And Sikhs....

Fateh, I signed up on a forum the other day, its about the language Punjabi. and they basically talk about how the language is going, in which direction and how to keep it alive. I am copying one of the posts which really hurt me when i read it, thought i'd share it with u guys...... So... just what are these 'NRI's' investing in their Doaba? Bars, clubs, strip joints? This article by Minna Zutshi doesnt surprise me. Many Punjabis have this habit of pampering their sons well beyond their childhood years and results of this can be seen in countless Sikh communities across the Globe. And while sons are getting pampered daughters get ignored so go look for attention elsewh…

In 1914, Gurdit Singh, a Sikh entrepreneur based in Singapore, chartered a Japanese ship, the Komagata Maru, to carry Indian immigrants to Canada. On May 23, 1914, the ship arrived in Vancouver Harbour with 376 passengers aboard: 340 Sikhs; 24 Muslims and 12 Hindus. Many of the men on-board were veterans of the British Indian Army and believed that it was their right as British subjects to settle anywhere in the Empire they had fought to defend and expand. They were wrong... READ THE REST AT: http://www.ektaonline.org/events/alikazimi/index.htm

Waheguroo Ji Ka Khalsa Wahegroo Ji Ki Fateh Today people are going around to Sikh youth saying form isnt important, they say we need to concentrate on the formless. Anyone is a Sikh, who ever goes and does meth teka to Guroo Granth Sahib ji is a Sikh. These people go on to say that, certain sects in India have guroo Mahraj in there house, but yet they do not keep Sikhi saroop, etc they are all Sikhs, and you cant say they arent because they do keertan, gurbani Ucharan, etc. So now my question is simple. Does Form not matter in Sikhi? As you answer this question please keep one this in mind: "Reath pyari mujko, Sikh pyara Ni" Guroo Rakha Waheguroo Ji Ka Khalsa…

Sikh Student Allowed to Carry Kirpan Sunday 20th March, 2005 Ajaib Singh - Panthic Weekly Staff Greenburgh, New York (KP) - The suspension record against a 15-year-old student who wore a kirpan, usually mistaken for a weapon or knife, to school was cleared and the Central 7 school district agreed to let him wear a smaller version of the sacred symbol. Ninth-grade honors student Amandeep Singh of Hartsdale had been wearing a kirpan—an article of faith in the Sikh religion—since he was baptized at age 8. Many of his friends and teachers knew about it, his family said, but on Feb. 4th Singh was suspended from Woodlands High School for eight days and charged with carr…

WJKK WJKF I have just read some newspaper reports of the reactions of the victims' relatives after the not guilty verdict. We can all understand and sympathise with their loss but the reactions of some are totally idiotic. They cannot accept the verdicts and instead of putting pressure on the Canadian govt for an inpartial enquiry some seem to be hell bent on carrying out a campaign of vilification against two Sikhs who have been found not guilty of the crime they were charged with. I have highlighted some quotes from the following news story I read. My own personal opinion is that the GOI did it and this view has been strengthened by the not guilty verdicts as well as…

waheguru ji kekhalsa, waheguru ji kefateh Pyare jio, from vancouver sun - seems like media protrayal will leave a lasting impression on some. malik and bagri should look at whether they can do a defamation of character case on Kim Bolan & Co. It could be a one-off thing, but innocent until proven guilty seems like a forgotten concept. Malik warehouse vandalized A Yaletown warehouse owned by the family of Ripudaman Singh Malik was broken into and vandalized early Thursday morning, less than a day after Malik was acquitted on charges he conspired to blow up two Air India jets and killed 331 people. waheguru ji kehalsa, waheguru ji ke fateh

Tragedy smeared all Sikh-Canadians For 20 years my immediate community unfairly bore the cross of innuendo by T. Sher Singh Toronto Star -- March 18th, 2005 During the two decades between the horrendous crime and tragedy of the downing of Air-India Flight 182 in 1985 and this week's verdict on the trial of the two accused of the outrage, my beard has gone from jet black to snow white. Part of it, of course, is due to age, in my case, 55. Some of the silver undoubtedly stems from the vagaries of the practice of law which, coincidentally, began for me in 1985. A good portion of it also relates to the tragedy, from watching helplessly from the sidelines as severa…

Gurdwara ban on short-hair marriage PARVINDER BHATIA Jamshedpur, March 13: Buoyed by the success of the ban imposed on jeans-clad women from entering the Gurdwara premises, the Central Gurdwara Prabhandhak Committee (CGPC) here has decided to ban Sikhs with trimmed hair from getting married at gurdwaras. According to CGPC officials, the step has been taken to uphold the religious customs of the community. They said the decision was taken after consulting senior members of the community. CGPC has written to the heads of 23 Gurdwara prabandhak committees in the city to implement the decision. It has also warned the committees of strict action if they were found flouti…
