  1. Khalsa Ji Very pleasant Waheguru Simran:

  2. Enlarge This ImageSarah Williamson It’s not exactly pleasant to be a symbol of rape. I’m not an expert, nor do I represent all victims of rape. All I can offer is that — unlike the young woman who died in December two weeks after being brutally gang raped, and so many others — my story didn’t end, and I can continue to tell it. When I fought to live that night, I hardly knew what I was fighting for. A male friend and I had gone for a walk up a mountain near my home. Four armed men caught us and made us climb to a secluded spot, where they raped me for several hours, and beat both of us. They argued among themselves about whether or not to kill us, and finally let us go. At 17, I was just a child. Life rewarded me richly for surviving. I stumbled home, wounded and traumatized, to a fabulous family. With them on my side, so much came my way. I found true love. I wrote books. I saw a kangaroo in the wild. I caught buses and missed trains. I had a shining child. The century changed. My first gray hair appeared. Too many others will never experience that. They will not see that it gets better, that the day comes when one incident is no longer the central focus of your life. One day you find you are no longer looking behind you, expecting every group of men to attack. One day you wind a scarf around your throat without having a flashback to being choked. One day you are not frightened anymore. Rape is horrible. But it is not horrible for all the reasons that have been drilled into the heads of Indian women. It is horrible because you are violated, you are scared, someone else takes control of your body and hurts you in the most intimate way. It is not horrible because you lose your “virtue.” It is not horrible because your father and your brother are dishonored. I reject the notion that my virtue is located in my <banned word filter activated>, just as I reject the notion that men’s brains are in their genitals. If we take honor out of the equation, rape will still be horrible, but it will be a personal, and not a societal, horror. We will be able to give women who have been assaulted what they truly need: not a load of rubbish about how they should feel guilty or ashamed, but empathy for going through a terrible trauma. The week after I was attacked, I heard the story of a woman who was raped in a nearby suburb. She came home, went into the kitchen, set herself on fire and died. The person who told me the story was full of admiration for her selflessness in preserving her husband’s honor. Thanks to my parents, I never did understand this. The law has to provide real penalties for rapists and protection for victims, but only families and communities can provide this empathy and support. How will a teenager participate in the prosecution of her rapist if her family isn’t behind her? How will a wife charge her assailant if her husband thinks the attack was more of an affront to him than a violation of her? At 17, I thought the scariest thing that could happen in my life was being hurt and humiliated in such a painful way. At 49, I know I was wrong: the scariest thing is imagining my 11-year-old child being hurt and humiliated. Not because of my family’s honor, but because she trusts the world and it is infinitely painful to think of her losing that trust. When I look back, it is not the 17-year-old me I want to comfort, but my parents. They had the job of picking up the pieces. This is where our work lies, with those of us who are raising the next generation. It lies in teaching our sons and daughters to become liberated, respectful adults who know that men who hurt women are making a choice, and will be punished. When I was 17, I could not have imagined thousands of people marching against rape in India, as we have seen these past few weeks. And yet there is still work to be done. We have spent generations constructing elaborate systems of patriarchy, caste and social and sexual inequality that allow abuse to flourish. But rape is not inevitable, like the weather. We need to shelve all the gibberish about honor and virtue and did-she-lead-him-on and could-he-help-himself. We need to put responsibility where it lies: on men who violate women, and on all of us who let them get away with it while we point accusing fingers at their victims. Sohaila Abdulali is the author of the novel “Year of the Tiger.”

  3. Many others have responded wonderfully giving good advice about sleepiness when simran. I just wanted to add two more important points. Firstly try to ensure you are getting at least 7 to 8 hours sleep before you get up and shower to do simran, nitnem etc because 7 to 8 hours every night is the usual average of our body's need for sleep after which it feels refreshed. Sleeping late and then trying to pray at amrit vela usually brings on sleepiness to many people. In the long term, sleeping adequately will help you feel refreshed when you get up. Secondly you mentioned that sitting at night at your computer does not make you sleepy. That is because you are engaging and interacting your mind with the things that excite and interest you on the computer. You need to use this same logic in simran. Simran is not about mechanical chanting, not really engaging your thoughts and mind. Simran is based on talking and praising God and Guru every time you say Waheguru. You have to do simran with the understanding that God and Guru's presence is in and around you, and you are praising God everytime you say Waheguru. Then, through simran you are now really engaging and interacting with God and thats when the magic starts to happen. When you do simran the right way, instead of getting sleepy your mind will enter heightened states of naam ras, naam rangan, gyan, chardikela, sehaj, and you will start experiencing stuff that is hard to describe here but will blow your mind. Also the thing to really aim for is not just simran morning and evening, but swaas swaas simran... breathe in..wahe/wah,....breath out....guru. Hear this within yourself as you breathe in and out making it a habit. All through Guru's grace if you always beg for naam during ardas.

  4. WLS, You've missed the point, and a seismic point it was indeed. I remember reading through your posts and replies a few years ago, and I tend to agree with you in the broad thrust of principle on many (not all) topics. However, this rape in India has highlighted malignant flaws in Indian society that can't be corrected with legislation (for those calling for tougher laws) and it can't be assessed through generally accepted "social norms" - because those very "social norms" are flawed. You claim that she was out at the 'wrong time of day' and those men and women who follow such "social norms" are asking for trouble, as it were. I can see the point that you are trying to make - what I'm saying, is that we shouldnt make that point. That may not make sense. Let me try... Indian society is very male dominated, as is the middle-east. There are youtube videos posted in the past 2 years of female CNN reporters being sexually abused whilst reporting the Arab Spring from Cairo. Do you know what the response from certain sectors of male muslim society was? She shouldn't have been there! What was she doing presenting amongst men? The attitude was incorrect - certainly from a western perspective, and I would argue from any perspective. But - from Imams quoted to the Daily Mail and other media, "she was basically asking for it". As perverse as it may seem to westerners, Arabs (and in the Delhi rape case, Indian men) have been conditioned to accept that that is simply the 'way it is'. India has a long history of using rape as a weapon - again, socially accepted in India or Pakistan, but derogatory behaviour from any normal man's perspective. Be it caste politics in the pind, be it "settling old scores between families", "teaching someone a lesson" etc. It stems from a culture which is just plain perverse. But, it's been historically accepted as a social norm, albeit quietly. Indian society simply doesn't respect a woman for who she is. In the example of this woman Jyoti, had her parents allowed her to go out alone, single, on the streets of Delhi, and she suffered abuse etc then we would all be saying "she shouldn't have travelled alone, should have travelled with friends or family". Here we have a girl who was travelling with her male friend and this still occured! There is something inherently wrong with indian men. Was she scantliy clad? No. Tipsy and therefore disinhibited? No. Gallivanting in a bar/club? No, she watched a film. You say you "went to bed early to rise early" and to those who don't, well, they shouldn't be surprised if they were to fall victim as it were. In London and many British cities, tipsy, scanitly clad women roll out of clubs and bars and walk home - not even with a male companion! Guess what - they don't get raped. My point is, is that social norms are different. Today, in India, a dynamic debate is taking place. Difficult questions are being asked. Indians are asking themselves - how, why, what for?

  5. There are quite a few arguments and shabads, especially a popular one by Guru Nanak ji about the torture a corn goes through in its food production process. The message from Guru Nanakji is that ALL of creation's lifeforms and vegetation has a life put into it by the Creator. My gurmukhi fonts are not working so I can't post any references. Like I said earlier, God has given you a brain and some logic to make up your mind and decide what you want to eat. There is no box and there is no right or wrong. Once you start following and contemplating gurbani, you will automatically get your god given 'Intuition' that tells you what you should and shouldn't do. We shouldn't disregard or speak lowly of others and that means the nihang jhatkaris. For them it is a serious and sacred shastar pooja act. This is the reason that it is carried out at Hazoor sahib and there is plenty of youtube material available if you want to check and confirm but Be-aware, it may be shocking for the faint hearted !!!

  6. As Sikhs we should always seek the truth... Even if the truth is not what we want to hear or is different to our own perceptions and views... This closed mind set mentality is damaging and leads to loss of heritage and tradition. I wouldn't be surprised personally if the images of the Gurus we accept today are inaccurate. A prime example is the installation of the vajah or European harmonium as one our primary kirtan instruments... the vajah was never a traditional kirtan instrument it was introduced and enforced by the British to make gurmat sangeet sound like church music.. yet many modern day Sikhs don't know this..

  7. Khalsa Ji I heard in katha once the significance of reading/listening to Gurbani , meditating on Mool Mantar , and meditating on Waheguru Mantar. Khalsa Ji imagine the following scenario: A farmer ploughs the field in order to prepare the soil for planting the seed. He tills the soil removing the unwanted weeds/impurities etc. Upon tilling the soil he sows the seeds. At the correct season with the aid of water and the fence/scarecrow etc. the seeds take root and deliver fruition. He cuts the crop thus filling his store with an abundance of wealth. Khalsa Ji in a similar way Gurbani teaches us the way to remove the weeds/impurities of maya from our minds as the jagyasoo realises the virtues of the creator as opposed to one's deh hangta {ignorance}. Gurbani reading/listening can be seen as tilling the soil of the mann {mind}. Once the jagyasoo realises the need to sow the seed of the creator he/she begins to meditate on Mool Mantar. This can be seen as sowing the seed. Once the seed of Mool Mantar takes root and blossoms in the form of ikagarta {concentration/yearning} then the jagysoo reaps the rewards of their harvest by filling the store house of their Atma with Waheguru as a result of meditating on Waheguru. Just a personal opinion Khalsa Ji so apologies in advance for any inaccuracies. Waheguru.Waheguru.Waheguru.

  10. It was great that sikh channel also gave airtime for initiative set up between taksal and akj to improve parchar, fight drugs epidemic e.t.c. If anyone can actually watched the show there were great points made. What impressed daas is that both sides akj uk and taksal (giani ram Singh) emphasised that ragmala, mool mantar e.t.c. Are minor issues and can only be resolved on a panthic level. These differences never came between Gursikhs in the past -sant kartar Singh/sant gurbachan Singh - bhai randhir Singh/bhai fauja singh. Gaini ram Singh jee is willing to set aside differences and work with jatha. Hopefully this initiative can be replicated throughout the panth.

  12. Jhatka has become about the tongue for majority of those who practice it. Simply meat is not allowed as it has many negative effects. Spiritually, and physically meat has many negative effects. The amusing part is that Nihang Singhs say we do extra Banis to set off the negative effect of eating meat. Such thinking is illogical when it comes to Sikhi. Sri Anand Sahib tells us that the shastar discriminate between good and sin, but they don't know the true essence of reality? The idea in Sikhi is to move forward and not be stuck in good and sin. Since they recognize the negative effect they are stuck in good and sin; one step forward and two steps backwards. Jhatka was started for a noble cause, but it has turned into a pure ritual. The occasional jhatka for survival has turned into a meat feast and they don't realize the animal is alive and breaths as humans do.

  14. worldly desires are ok for our current spiritual level. we need to eat, we need clothes, we need to pay our bills etc. nothing wrong with that. when we desire more than what we need, sometimes that can cause problems. we rise above desire through simran, seva, sadhsangat. but even then, until we reach a certain spiritual level, desires will come up automatically b/c of our past lives karmas. it's ok and nothing to worry about. there's nothing wrong with giving yourself an appropriate worldly reward if you wish, or pursuing an appropriate worldly desire. an example is pursuit of the desire to become a doctor. the key message here is to understand that any lasting happiness will not come from the world and fulfillment of worldly desires. lasting happiness will come from dharm.

  15. Surely the rationale behind not serving meat in langar is so that all are welcome? How would you feel as a vegetarian to go in and find the only thing being served was roti and meat? What if a muslim came and couldn't eat it because it was not halaal? For people of all castes/colour/creed to be able to sit and partake of Langar, the food must be acceptable to all. Agree with above comments that you must walk upon your own path in Sikhi and make your own decisions.

  16. this is what i have to say groups within sikhi like to put sikhi within boundries, a little box...anything within the box is sikhi and anything outside is not...this does not go with the teaching of guru granth sahib...sikhi is more than that...you can not put sikhi within boundires, labels, a box and say its that.... many people will write bhagat kabeer jis baani on here using there baani as a tool to fight against meat eaters...then the supporters of meat will either try to twist bhagat kabeer jis baani and say you are not thinking in perspective of what they were saying etc.... but the truth is this (well for me) there is not 1 answer...several times in your spirtual jeevan youll find out there isn't 1 answer to things...for example waheguru is closest to everyone but at the same time waheguru is the farsest...guru gobind singh ji writes khanda prithmai saaj ke...god createsd the double edged sword first..thr double edged sword represents how the world is,,,life is both posion life is both sweet GURU Granth sahib will answer this question---in Guru granth sahib every bhagat has his own way of reaching god, those who use bhagat kabirs lines to make their claim against meat..ok..then also go ring bells in mandirs...also go do nawaz like bhagat farid every morning....see 1 bhagat for example bhagat kabeer is saying 1 thing about meat and a topic...while another for example guru nanak dev ji is saying some thing else about the same topic (example the opposite view on the meat situation between them)..but both bhagat kabeers and guru nanak dev jis bani is in guru granth sahib...the point wasnt to do kandhar of the other...but recognize theres differenrt ways of reaching god...wherever the truth was heard guru nanak dev ji accepepted it....that is the universal message of guru granth sahib and sikhs dont even rememeber that..,hardcore jathabndi fanboys will not like my answer but in the end this is wat i feel is the truth... the vedas each have a different sadhant...message...which will you use, that is up to you, dont get into the kandhar mode of the other ...the vedas dont have writing denouncing the other either....just like in guru granth sahib 1 bhagat isnt denying the other and actually bhagat kabeer mentions bhagat ravidas and bhagat ravidas mentions bhagat kabir and others and they both tell they are all right in their own way and have reached god...this is sikhi....(not actuallty telling you to choose vedas but just giving example of how they are also like that) the matter isnt bringing down the other view point but offering something for all...annd if u cant do that ull be stuck in small fighting and live in boundries...limits waheguru ji ka khalsa waheguru ji ki fateh

But with that being said, I have been listening to bhai seva singh ji tarmala sachkhand vasi lately, all the lectures be it katha, seminar are spot on, are aligned with Gurmat. I was bit skeptical at first though but its important to be open minded and neutral when it comes to listening to all mahapursh be it sant/bhai sahib kathas from all jatha's/samparda's/academies, take tat gyan of gurmat- gurbani shabad katha/simran technique from it and leave the rest aside..!!!

  19. He is great jathedar so far. He originally studied at taksal. Nevertheless, he promotes unity in diversity, understanding and don't super impose his views on the panth. He discourages any kind of fascism - he clearly gave scolding/tarna to those who promote or bring katarvaad in to the panth during puratan samparda samelan seminar. He definitely did lot of patching and repaired lot of broken bridges with puratan samparda's ie-nirmale, udasi/sevapanthis (followed how it was recommended in anandpur sahib resolution and how those samparda's who were demonized and vilified by mainstream should be re-integrated back with no string attached-taking over their property). He inherited lot of issues, disunity, problems from the past and fixed them by not just showing through mere rhetoric speech but actually by actions- attending events, be supporitve of puratan samparda's and our shaheeds- political prisoners- bhai balwant singh ji rajoana. He was instrumental regarding pushing punjab gov't to support bhai balwant singh ji rajoana case. He opened up restrictions of SGPC election/voting structure. I am sure he has lots to improve. But lets all be encouraging/optimistic/respectful and be full proud of our jathedars of sri akaal takth sahib not just him but all panj jathedars of panj takth sahib (five pillars of sikh dharam). We should have panj takth maryada/panj takth jathedars of the panth at the highest esteem even higher than our jatha's or samparda's that many of us inspires from ..!!!!!!!!!

  20. try doing simran out loud and listening to it. do it loudly if you need to. if you are still too sleepy, open your eyes. the best way is if you are staring at a blank wall, so there are no distractions for your mind to focus on. if you get tired japping naam out loud, you may find that when you loudly jap the 'wahe' then 'guru' follows automatically. this way a person doesn't get tired as fast. Also, I don't think it's healthy to eat supper at 9 pm. if a person has their main meal at 6 or 7 pm, than their sleep will be more restful. you can't have a restful sleep on a full stomach.

Everywhere I look I've seen Sikhs calling Param a loser, an <banned word filter activated>, gay, swearing at him, posting pictures of him and making fun of his appearance. It's gone so far that in my eyes it equates to bullying. We all know that what he did was wrong, but we are reduced to a very low level when we insult him like that. 25. it will not only happen today...the ''attack'' will happen for the rest of the days...you have to recognize whats going on, even then it might take ages to control your mind...what ever is happening is nothing wrong...what is wrong is the mind..the mind is like a ''maidaan'' or ran a battle field...kaam never dies but causes a rebirth...what is kaam ? what is happening is your energy your seema has reached a point it rises, but when it rises throughout your body and you have vibrations--your mind which has been fed dirty thoughts will take that think dirty thoughts and drain the seema energy out your body...it will happen day after day same thing nothing different...energy rising, then because of the minds dirty thoughts it is wasted....actually this energy is much much more..its not only energy,...its the buidling blocks of life...this energy the vibrations is much more than that also in a sense its naam rass, well it can be used for naam rass....waheguru is not only seen, bhagats have said we have seen waheguru (though waheguru is hard to describe) but we have also HEARD waheguru...there are acoustic energy bivrations that make of the 5th element 'air' after all space is made up of wahegurus light...the energy that atoms etc manifest into...waheguru has a nirgun saroop, and sargun saroop....during samadhi the goal is to merge, open your third eye of and merge with the geet, vibrations, anhad naad, prakash the jot of waheguru which are his bol...paramtma de bol...waheguru also speaks, and is forever speaking, thakur hamara sadh bolanta...har vakhat bol reya ...but your mind wasnt present...since you were born you muted yourself to paratma de bol, paratma de geet the vibrations where waheguru is speaking, you can also hear it if seeining waheguru was seeing with these eyes then the blind bhagat in guru granth sahib would never have been able to see waheguru...even the deaf say the can hear,,,the dance of the world through kaaal, the vibrations and geet of paratma....you need to stop wasting your energy through kaam thoughts and recognize whats really happening, there is a prakash, anhad naad forever playing, it rises in you from below, your body has been made to have such power but your mind...your mind causes you to forget this power, waste this power.....when your energy rises, recognize the energy, wahegurus presence, try to merge and hear wahegurus jot and become 1...do naam simran, convert it to naam rass ?

  26. I been reading your posts for a while now, you come across as very arrogant. I've never been bothered too respond to one of your post but what you said in this thread is absolutely disgusting. No let me ask you something? Paraphrasing your post above you say men in your family don't do such and such and lead by example but if you did such things you would then believe the females in your family have the same right. So do the men in your family also include you? As you have posted yourself on this site, that before you were married that you used to drink Stella. *EDIT - the following is with regards to other threads I don't know if you include yourself as a man as recently you had a go at someone. You stated that (again paraphrasing), they were a girl for having an office job, your a man for working in a manual job BUT you youself are also studying law aspiring to go into that profession. So maybe you will then become a girl if you work in an office? About being non Indian, well you have on more than one occasion stated how your family got here. They joined the British Army, Fiji etc. End of the day that place was still British India (we can like it or not), but in the worlds eyes the nationality of your ancestors would be Indian. More recently you state your parents were both born in England? Before you had a different ancestral heritage nowadays you state illegal passports from Pakistan and Karachi?

  29. This will not go beyond the war of words. the past indo pak wars were between equals. But now india has left pakistan behind by miles. The indiam army is now too powerful for pakistan. At the same time I think India should seperate the kashmir valley from jammu and ladakh and just give it to pakistan. Kashmir valley is a huge liability and burdan for India to keep. As for the chinese army. It is a very powerful army and much beyond Indian army to handle. With all this said I dont think the Sikhs should think of india's interests as their own. We have given up so much only to be back stabbed repeatedly. Sikhs should now wait for the opportunity to present itself and sieze it to re establish their own raaj.

I have heard that seva clears the obstacles in the path of doing simran. btw, the fact that obstacles come up does not mean that you have bad karma, its just means that you need to have the wisdom force yourself to MAKE time for simran everyday.

  34. Thing is, younger, intelligent educated people will better appreciate how the image we have of our Gurus will have been seriously influenced by interpretations of the past - especially the all powerful Singh Sabha views. Visually we'd have been influenced by Sobha Singh. That being said, to try and 'fix' the form of our Guru's based solely on our own intellectuals interpretations obviously has it's own flaws, as they too were human and prone to error and misconceptions. I mean look at the near and contemporary imagery of Guru Tegh Bahadhur - it presents him as a meditating ascetic type, whereas older imagery portray him in a more regal light.

No one told you to panic or sell off everything and run to the mountains, they are purely trying to help. Next you will be saying maharaaj shouldnt talk about death as it will only make us panic. If a mahapursh (and its not just one) have said times are looking very bad then take heed and respect what they are saying, dont just say they are being arrogant.

  40. None are stronger than each other. It all depends on a person and how high or low their jeevan is. For some Mool Mantar helps them see Vaheguru clearly and for some its Vaheguru simran. Each one has its own purpose, but gets a person to the same destination. One is not faster than the other either. If you are more concsious of yourself, then at times.....depending on what Bani you read, you will want to do one over the other. But then another time you will want to do the other one. And sometimes Maharaj does so much kirpa you want to do both with all the energy in ur body not stop for countless hours. Giani Thakur Singh ji said, instead of talking about Sikhi, just start practicing it and you'll find out the answers. Satguru also said this in Gurbani, by saying truth is high, but higher is truthful living. Practice, contemplate, experience, and then become one.

  43. Adi Guru Granth Sahib ji and the respect of Maharaj's sarup: Please watch this video about how we should respect Guru ji. It is a very sad and hurtful that in many places how much disrespect is shown to Guru Sahib. In this video the Bhai Sahib starts to cry talking about this issue. Whereever you maybe always educate the Sangat with prem about the adab of Guru Sahib and Gurbani.

  45. Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser. Candle Light Vigil 2012 Saturday 3rd November 2012 15:00 - 18:00 Victoria Square (Outside the Town Hall) Birmingham, UK 28 years ago this month the largest democracy in the world, predicted to soon become a world superpower partook in nationwide slaughter and terror of one if it’s most loyal minority groups - the Sikhs. Thousands of Sikhs were set alight, raped, terrorised and hunted down in a state organised massacre. Yet to this day only a handful of people have ever been tried for these crimes and the main orchestrators of the massacres not only walk free but have been rewarded for their brutal actions through political power and prestige. For the Sikhs lucky enough to survive the 1984 massacre, the memories and scars are as fresh as if the horrific events occurred yesterday. Many – living in gross poverty want little else than justice. Yet it is the one things that seems to elude them the most. The Sikh youth of the UK will congregate at Chamberlain Square in Birmingham City Centre on Saturday 3rd November from 3pm to 6pm. A collective effort will be made to highlight the injustice and suffering endured by the Sikhs in their so-called “homeland.” Let us show them that we have not forgotten their pain. Let us get together and show the world that these massacres cannot be forgotten. See you there and please do spread the word. Thank you Birmingham Candle Light Vigil Promo for Sikh Genocide.wmv

  47. Bhai/Bhen Ji, The Jaikara - Bole Soh Nehal does not come written anywhere as Guru Sahib's words. Moreover other Jaikare not NOT modified versions of the first one, they are different. So even if Guru Ji had written a specific Jaikara somewhere, it doesn't mean you cannot shout any other one. Right? They are all battle cries and they can contain anything. Some Nihung Singhs include sakhis/baanis with shouting Jaikare and their jaikare sometimes last longer than 20 mins! here's a list of some other Jaikare which are used these days: http://www.panthkhalsa.org/sdpn/kb_jk.html
