  2. Sit down together when he is sober read or listen to Sukhmani Sahib daily. For some it takes only a few days, but for some it can take weeks as they have collected a lot of bad karma to hear(to hear the deep sound, the deep meaning or to even hear the message) the Guru's Bani has become very difficult for them. So it will be difficult to change instantly after listening or reading once. If you show and have actually devotion to the path of Sikhi, then maybe that will rub off on him and he will forget his bad habits and will improve himself.

  5. Benti - Stop showing respect to Gurus' photos This is a highly anti gurmat act and cant be passed off as love or shardha as we are disobeying and therefore disrespecting jugo jug atal gurbani - ਪਾਥਰੁ ਲੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਮੁਗਧ ਗਵਾਰ ॥ paathar lay poojeh mugaDh gavaar. The ignorant fools pick up stones and worship them. ਓਹਿ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੇ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਾ ਤਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ ohi jaa aap dubay tum kahaa taranhaar. ||2|| But when those stones themselves sink, who will carry you across? ||2|| Some may argue that these panktis are against idol worship (made of stone) - but we need to understand guru's shabad in spirit not in letter - this applies to anything that is symbolic of god - in case of pictures - an idol made of ink and paper instead of clay. If gurus wanted to have portraits made of themselves , they could have done that through artists - but they categorically ordained against it - as they knew that instead of following the message , people will start bowing to the pictures (which is unfortunately what the sikh panth of today is copiously doing) For those who don't know - these pictures are not even correct depictions of gurus - they are in fact all imagination of one man - Sobha Singh , in fact no one knows what gurus looked like and thats not a problem since in gurmat we are advised to focus on immortal shabad and not on mortal personalities. So remove guru's pictures from your homes and instead hang tuks from guru granth sahib such as "Fareeda bure ka kar bhala, gussa man na handaye" , "Haq paraya nanaka us sooar us gai " , "mithat neevi nanaka , gun changiyaiya tat" - which will positively influence our day to day behaviour and make us better humans and gursikhs. Finally exercise your own wisdom rather than blindly following others - ਦੇਖਾ ਦੇਖੀ ਸਭ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ daykhaa daykhee sabh karay manmukh boojh na paa-ay. They follow others, but the self-willed manmukhs do not understand. Bhul chook maaf ! WJKK WJKF

  8. Benti - stop both expecting and offering dowry. Dowry is the root cause of female infanticide - which I'd say is the biggest ghallughara (progorm) of our times. Sikhs should strive to form a new society based on gurmat principles and we should break free from our ugly punjabiyat culture. "Har Prabh mere babula har devo daan meh daajo " Also like here in west - Parents should be responsibility of both sons and daughters Also sikh weddings should happen without regard to dowry , janam patri and caste and they should be simple affairs - without the extravagance and waste that we see these days.

  10. Surely there must be more to this than just moving a picture? My own thoughts are that there should be no pics in Darbar Sahib because all focus should be on Guru Ji but elsewhere in the gurdwara should be fine.

Over inflated egos is the problem, nothing else.. 300 people don't make up the whole Sangat.. I can bring 600 people to support the committee, then which is considered as Sangat..?Yes comittee shoul ask Sangat before taking important decisions, but moving a pictures ain't one of them IMO

  12. VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH || Sardar Raghbir Singh Bir Sardar Raghbir Singh Bir was a Sikh businessman who used to live in Calcutta (Bengal). His family was originally from Lahore and his father Sardar Lehna Singh also was a very good Gurmukh. At first Bir jee got interested in Sikhi and he wrote the famous book Bandaginama on his spiritual experiences. In this book he writes that he used to dye and tie his beard, even though he knew it was a wrong practice. He did so at the order of his father who was not a religious person at that time. Later on, when his father Sardar Lehna Singh got infected with many diseases including arthritis, he took up Sikhi to cure himself. He did so much Abhyaas of Gurbani and Naam that within a very short period he became perfectly healthy. Till his last breath, at the age of 85, he maintained the body of a 25 years old youth. He wrote a wonderful book on his experiences and is called Gurmukh Jeevan. He was a fanatic as far as not using worldly medicine is concerned. He considered himself as pure Atma and conducted his business as such. Once, he hurt his foot and he did all things opposite to what doctor suggested. He did not tie his foot with a bandage and deliberately exposed it to water (as opposed to doctor's advice) and still got healed. First of all he never got sick but if he ever did, he used to conduct his business as usual and ate normal as well. He totally used to reject the notion of disease because he believed that a disease cannot occur to Atma. Once, Bir jee and Sardar jee (Lehna Singh jee) started talking about the Atma saroop of the Jeev. Bir jee questioned that if we were truly Atma, then why was there a need to sleep. At this Sardar jee agreed and then proved it by not sleeping for many days, and still not feeling any tiredness or fatigue. He used to do his regular work all day, and at night would come to the bedside of his son and all night do Naam Abhyaas. Once a thought came to his mind that why should he use the mosquito net for protection from mosquitoes. He argued that the mosquitoes contained the same Parmatma Vaheguru as all of us and as such they should not bite him and hurt him. So he removed the net and also removed his shirt and slept with kachera only. The next morning his body was so badly bitten by the mosquitoes that there was not a part on his body that was unhurt. Sardar jee laughed it off saying that the reason why mosquitoes had hurt him was that he had some hidden hatred and negative feeling for them. Then he did Naam Abhyaas all day and kept affirming again and again that the mosquitoes were a roop of Vaheguru and that Vaheguru jee could not hurt him. Within couple of days, the mosquitoes stopped biting him at all and then all his life he never slept with mosquito net and he never got hurt by mosquitoes. Sardar Raghbir Singh Bir wrote some excellent books which include the following titles: Sarb Rog ka Aukhand Naam - This books talks about curing oneself through Naam and Gurbani. Chardi Kala - This book contains chosen articles that bring Chardi Kala to one's life. Safal Jeevan - This books talks about how to have a successful live - both worldly and spiritual. Ramzi Kahaniyaan - This book contains some fictitious stories that are full of spirituality and spiritual secrets. A must read for serious seekers. Ardaas Shakti - This book talks about the concept of Ardaas in Sikhi and how to do such an Ardaas that gets heard by Vaheguru jee. Bir jee writes of his experience after stopping to dye and tie his beard. He writes how he started getting treated differently everywhere he went. If he would be standing in a queue, he would get moved to the top because of his appearance etc. COURTESY OF KULBIR SINGH GURMATBIBEK.COM VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH ||

  14. A Jeev-Atma needs a true Guru (SatGuru) to reach the final destination (jot mein jot). Baba Nand Singh ji could see that the landlord had a Murshad/Guru who was a true one and therefore asked him to stick with them. All the religions lead to the same destination but the difference lies in the approach. Sikhi is a Shabd Surat Marg which is the easiest one of all. Its like reaching at the top of a Lamp post to which a bird can reach with ease and an ant has to make many struggles when they are both starting from the same point.

  18. So nice. Someone who is most probably of Sikh faith finds a Sikh forum and asks for help. History teaches us that Sikhs helped all, nowadays it's like lets just ridicule the person who reaches out for help as they have not lived up to the standard of what a Sikh is supposed to be. I dobut many of the posters on here are the rel mccoy, every one has faults. Have compassion and instead of slating someone with the obvious give some advise that may actually help them. Like i've said many times before many may think they are good Sikhs but are they good humans? Does true sikhi not prescribe to the logic that you need to be a good human first then only you can be a good Sikh? Cause what is the point of doing all the formallities if your full of hatred or look down on others for not being to a standard you think is acceptable. OP, alcholics have an addiction which is not easy to overcome. Like all addictions its not as easy as saying 'if you love me don't ever do it again'. The person may have every intention of keeping promises they make in not indulging into their addiction but it is SO HARD to repress those feelings and behaviours. They will do anything to satisfy the urge for their addiction, when they are feeling withdrawl symptoms. They need to see a psychologists and get to the root cause and address the issues. It is a long journey which with support can be overcome. With the majority of addicts it is there loved ones that suffer the most. Find help groups and in UK there are many addction centres that can help, be it for drink or drugs or gamballing. on my phone so can't type much sorry.

  19. Picture be it artistic or real serve as reminder, invoke a devotional feeling which further inspire or motivates an individual towards dharam, good deeds, attributes. It's huge generalization to suggest just because you have pictures of guru sahib, saints/soldiers in your house that indicates one is idol worshiping, its quite a insult and those who suggest that are clearly out of depth regarding intertwine relationship of sargun and nirgun and they also have double standard as they have no problem putting pictures of family, iconography of all sorts, home decors in their homes. Idol worshiping have two forms- physical form and subtle form in one's mind. What we have done is we have condemned (rightly so) physical form of idol worshiping in sikhi- dhoof in front of picture and rightly so but sometimes so much so much that we have gone extreme lengths of removing fresco of our guru sahiban, destroyed our sikh art/ heritage in doing so in insecurity, paranoia, removing pictures of guru sahib, our shaheeds, murids, sahibzadas(recent events).. now condemnation of physical idol worship is right but removing our heritage fresco/ discouraging artist expression references and destroying our heritage in insecurity that is totally wrong and quite frankly nothing but knee J E R K Reaction that is something only reincarnation of teja singh/protestant/right wing/ultra elitist fascist mindset would do. Anyway, what we also missed to address is subtle form of idol worshiping which is quite important one. You see idol worshiping have broader implications when in its subtle form its usually do with one's mind/perception than actual subject (picture). You could simply have no pictures in the gurdwara, house hold nor in your wallet but still be idol worshipper..how? Here is how, if your perception is stuck where we confine our guru sahib jot only in sargun saroop of sri guru granth sahib ji only and not hazar-nazar as well everywhere, inside everyone- your perception unintentionally is committing border line of idol worshiping..Jagadi Jot of all guru sahiban is in sri guru granth sahib ji there is no question about it nor they should be doubts or questions, but is guru sahib is confined to sargun saroop of sri guru granth sahib ji only?? No they clearly NOT......"confining" is the crux of argument here...We have iconic historical moment of sri guru nanak dev ji teaching lessons to Muslims of them confining their allah in the mecca..i thought we learned it from that historical event..i guess apparently *NOT* allah/Vahiguroo is everywhere lets not confine it. we are committing idol worshipping when confining vahiguroo who is sarab vyapak.!!! Guru maharaj is sargun, nirgun(gyan) and shabad as per gurbani and as per bhai nand lal ji. When we think of guru sahib if we never bring all these aspects of guru sahib and "always" conditioned to be attached to one aspect of guru sahib we are committing idol worshiping as we are confining guru sahib. So lets just honest with ourselves and look at "all" aspects of idol worshiping than just the physical one....!!

Vaheguru stop this missionary bakvaas on Sikh Sangat just close the threads when someone does shanka because they arent the sort of people to listen to daleels, it will just confuse the general sangat. basic point what would you rather do put a pic of a model in your child or guru sahib or shaheed? do you put pictures of your fmaily on wall? if so? why? to remember them. same way maybe by seing a photo of guru sahib someone will remember them, a bad thought or situation will finish. just seriously get a life and stop doing shankey on everything.

  22. What about pictures for historical purposes, i.e. showing battles or major events in Sikhi, etc? Surely they aren't frowned upon? I ask because for future generations of Sikhs it would be nice if, as a gateway into the faith, they could see historical Sikh events depicted by artists that aren't meant to be bowed down to, but instead analysed much like the classic religious imagery from the Renaissance. You don't see many people light a dhoof or do matha tek to the works of Michaelangelo or Leonardo Da Vinci! :biggrin2:

  23. Well done !! You sound like you are making excellent progress ! You should stay calm and focused by trying not to rush or to take any steps backwards. I know there are many amritdharies and gursikhs who won't give any regard or inspiration to anyone who is mona. The problem is that some of these amritdharies feel that they are above and untouchable once they become full sikhs !! Some even believe that they have the status of 'Gurmukh' once they have taken amrit !! sad,sad,sad....very sad...................

  24. Can you explain by starting from the beginning. Who told you that it is these are pictures of Satguru. Our Gurus were the Kings of Kings and had all the best resources at their call. They never ever allowed anyone to make their portraits or idols. So who are you trying to fool by thinking that saying that you are taking inspiration from these imaginary pictures. Had people of your mind set had their way all our Gurdwaras would have these imaginary pictures hanging in the Darbar Halls from every nook and corner.

  30. Sometimes when the enemy wants to kill another people, they hire traitors from that very same community. Those hired traitors end up even more ruthless than their masters. Sikh in the Punjab police during the days of militancy were such hired traitors. Even during operation blue star, it was Brar's(the biggest Sikh traitor of the 20th century) decision to bring in the tanks against he Singhs because he knew the Indian army could never beat Sant Jee on equal ground. In the war between Punjab police and militants, it was Sikhs who died in both sides. It is easier to win a war if your people are united, but it is hard to win when your own brothers are ready to become traitors for the GOI.

  31. Thats amazing to hear, first try not judge Sikhism by ones who follow it, you will find a lot of people on the outside have the Roop (look) of a Sikh but may be less Sikh you expect them to be. Sikhism is the pursuit of Truth; you should start with trying to understand these underlying tenets, Mun, Kaal, Punj Choor, Chitar gupt, Daram Raja, Trai Gun thihee gunee sansaar bhram suthaa suthiaa rain vihaanee | The world is asleep in the three modes and doubt; it passes the night of its life sleeping. It may feel like you’ve been thrown in to the deep end, but these are the basics of Sikhism, we need to understand what Sat Guru has said why we are here and as the above shabad explains, we are asleep in 3 modes and doubt, understanding this is beginning to learning how the mind has been corrupted.

  32. You've made awesome, awesome steps. Don't give up because you feel like you're being excluded or anything like that. Occasionally it's tough to break into social groups especially if they've been formed for a considerable time; it's human nature to be wary of outsiders. Although those Singhs should remember they're representing Guru Ji's Sikhs and they aren't bouncers guarding an exclusive club. But, whatever, that's the way these things are. All I can say is keep everything going, and keep moving forward. Sangat is recommended for Sikhs, but don't lose heart if you don't find it immediately. Seriously impressed with how far you've come, bro.

  34. A lot of people have their own interpretations of what they think is God. What if you were told, that it is outlined with Guru Granth Shaib who Vaheguru is, would you still harbour your own personal adaptations? I see it as a shame that the "whole" spectrum of Reality is outlined by Guru Granth shaib, it is a failing of the Panth and people who preach that it has allowed so many schools of thought to creep in to our youngsters, who find it ok to rationalise their own feelings and assert “truth claims”, to people listening to mystics, to reading books.. about the afterlife. There are 2 types of people i see ones that are humble to understand they know nothing and are dependent of Guru jee's guidance, from, what it means to be a good person, to what our role within this world is to the ultimate truth of Reality. The other willfull people who try find their own meaning in life, but still flying the banner of religion, only not to really follow its tenets but be half and half, to feel like they are a part of something but not to really do more than say they are Sikh but still make assertions on matters with information that "feels/makes" sense to them. People we need to stop looking outside of Guru Granth Shaib and have faith that everything we need to know is within Sat Guru.

  35. Harbhajan Singh is criticizing something that effects the whole society. Jasdeepsingh2k125 is criticizing an individual which honestly doesn't impact our roots or culture. Honestly veer, ok if after being on SikhSangat you've seen me throw the word judgement around, its because I see a lot of intolerance sometimes. It feels like we have to criticize everything posted on here. Why not just realize that ok he made a video tried to do something good thats it leave it at that and continue on with our day. I've been on Sikhsangat for many years also this isn't my only account I had another account before this one so I've read many of your posts too in the past and a lot of them I agree with and a lot of your posts I disagree with, but overall I still respect you as a poster. Yes he does mention that singers should sing about Baba Deep Singh Ji or the Sahibzaade. It just means that he respects the sacrifices Baba Ji made and the Sahibzaade made. He doesn't have to be a pooran Gursikh in order to do that. I am not a Harbhajan Singh fan nor do I know or care about his personal life. I don't know who he is dating or what he does because I honestly could care less about all of that. I just came across this video on youtube and I really liked it. I wanted to post it on here because we usually discuss Punjabi music and the vulgarity of some of it very often. I think we aren't looking at the bigger picture here and we are just nitpicking about silly irrelevant issues. Lets watch the video, enjoy it, and move on.

  40. Sad day today as Police called to SGSS Southall, Havelock Road yet again..! On Tuesday committee decided it would be a good idea to remove the huge picture of Dhan Sri Guru Gobind Singhji's two Sahibzade in Havelock rd foyer, by the Hukumnama board. But Guru Maharaaj sent 40/50 sevadaars of the Havelock Gurdwara to do benti for it not be removed, under pressure tbe cmte backed down.... But, last night (Thursday) @ midnight, they locked the doors and removed the picture while sangat watched from outside through the doors. Tonight, the number of sangat increased to over 300, including young children, their mothers and Grand Parents who remonstrated to the cmte as to why they would do such a thing..! Police where called, and are still there now in numbers.. Personally, I have no idea as to why the photo was removed, but I have no doubt that Sangat has the right to ask the question and receive a proper answer....! As I write this, it is still going on, with 100 Sangat locked outside Gurdwara and another 200 inside sitting and doing Jap of 'Satnam Waheguru'... The only question that keeps ratling in the mind is....... why?

  46. Dearest _Kaur_ Jee, First of all as I type this, in my heart I do an ardas for you and your family and children, that God will provide you with everything you need and open new doors for you and bless you with financial prosperity. This is my ardas and may it be answered according to God's Divine Pleasure and Will for your family. I hope others reading this too will include bhenjee _Kaur_ in their nijee(private)ardas. Second, dearest sister, the best way for God to look after you and your family and provide for you is to really focus on having a very true and deep relationship with Gurujee and God. I come from a poor family where we were very poor and my sisters could not get married. However as a teenager, I turned to Sikhism, God, and Gurujee, took Amrit, started learning kirtan and how to read SGGS, and I started making everybody in my family sit with me and do evening Rehraas and kirtan and ardas. So our house became a house where every evening there were prayers. My mother would make parshad too. I would also wake up extremely early and do nitnem, simran and ardas. Gurujee blessed our family and our financial problems all got sorted and my sisters all got married! So I have posted shabads for confidence building further up in an earlier post you can use immediately but for the long term, let you big concern shift from money worries to ensuring all of your family is travelling on the path of true deep Sikhism. Get very involved in going to Gurdwara and satsang and if you are not baptised, think of getting Amrit. Get your children involved in, learning punjabee, gurbanee and kirtan etc. Make sure you have translations of Shree Guru Granth Sahib in your house and plenty of books on Sikhism. If you dont and cant afford, pm me privately and I will het these posted to you asap. If you wake up every morning amritvela and do simran and nitnem and ardas, there is no way God will desert and abandon you. Once a lady came crying to me that her son had failed his final medical MBBS exams. I told her to come with her husband to my house every morning at 4 am and we would do Sukhmani Sahib together and then simran and ardas. Her son then passed his exams and is now a doctor. Another lady told me her husband and mother in law had thrown her out to divorce her because she could not get pregnant. I told her to get up and do simran every morning for two hours 4a.m to 6a.m everyday at least for 40 days. On the 40th day. her husband and mother in law came and begged forgiveness and took her back home! 3 months later I met her at a Gurdwara where my jetha was doing kirtan and she was pregnant! I could keep typing such true stories all night on my computer for you, but you get the point. Also, you are on the right website because there are many blessed Sikhs here all very willing to help you out. I run businesses through God's grace so I could help you out in financial planning but I need more details. Sometimes what we want is right under our nose but we cannot see it. Money is a flow because it comes and goes. You have to work out that how it can come, where it is hiding, but you also need to work out where it is going so you can drag it out more. If you are in the UK as you said in London, you should talk to an accountant by paying him a small sum of money for advice. He could look at your monthly income statements of wife and husband, and the ages of your children etc and advice you of any benefits you are entitled to. You may also need to look at your education levels because you could invest(painfully) in some further education courses that will provide you better income in the future. You havent stated much so its hard to pinpoint where you can progress. Given more information me and others on this site who have experience in household matters could give you more specific advice. There may be talents you may have by which you could even start some part time business. You also need to look at your mortgage ,weekly shopping, rent and other bills and expenditure from different angles. The western diet and food shopping pattern is far higher than that of traditional Sikh diet. My parents had 8 children making it a total of 10 persons. But every morning my mother boiled and made tea with parathas from cheap atta which you buy in a big sack together with homemade achar and yoghurt and ghee. Likewise afternoon rice and dhall with some vegetables and evening stuff like chapattis with a dall and sabzee. You could even utilise your garden no matter how big or small it is to grow your own veg. This year I grew my own potatoes, sarson, tomatoes, chilies, spinach, methi, fruits like raspberries, strawberries, blk currants etc, carrots, coriander, basil, in my garden. Right now I have sweet little berry like chilean guava fruits ripening in this winter time. So we need to be creative and imaginative and think out of the box and arrange and rearrange how we do things, how we construct our household structure and God will help us. I could go on all day and night giving you many examples but thats enough for now and will be great to hear back from you and may this discussion continue for your benefit. There is no shortage in the house of Guru Nanak Dev Maharaj!

  47. I don't think it's a simple as doing Naam Simran and then opening your eyes and there a wad on notes next to you! Naam Simran will give someone confidence, chardi kala attitude to tackle their problems head on. This could be something as simple as putting pen to paper and making a list of income and outgoings. Sometimes when you see what the outgoings are going on you can reduce or stop those which are superfluous. I would suggest that the OP contact an organisation like citizens advice or something similar who will be able to see what help they could receive from govt sources according to their situation. It is amazing what is sometimes available even though the Op might think that they are entitled to nothing.
