  1. the line in original gurmukhi is..."moorat", bhai gurdas ji clarifies what the 'moorat' of Satguru Sahib is: ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲਾ। Gur Moorati Gur Sabadu Hai Saadhasangati Mili Anmrit Vaylaa. गुर मूरति गुर सबदु है साधसंगति मिलि अंम्रित वेला । Only the Guru's word is the idol of Guru and this word is received in the holy congregation e ambrosial hours of the day. 4. Turn off the TV? A bit drastic isn't it? :biggrin2: Just listen to what these Singhs have to say, and formulate your own ideas according to that. They obviously won't be coming out with radically different viewpoints to other Sikhs I hope, just coloured slightly according to their own experiences.

  5. Sikhi values and gay sexuality are not compatible. If you want to be gay by all means be gay and lesbian but dont try to claim you are Sikhs and they are one and the same. If we as a community go down this road of accepting gays as Sikhs then the case can be made for other sexual abnormalities such as pedophiles and animal sex lovers... you at sarbat believe in equality for all.... then how can anyone discriminate against those abnormal and sexual deviant people? you cant unless you want to be hypocrites. Bottom line is Sikh scriptures clearly state a man marries a woman explicitly and does not state the case for man can marry a man or woman marry a woman. So case closed sarbat gay Sikhs who number probably just a dozen individuals vs 800,000 strong Sikh community making it a non-issue for Sikhs we got more imrportant issues as a community to deal with. Sarbat gays really needs to grow up and stop trying to meddle in Sikh religious matters.

  6. 'Punjabi' films would (and indeed are) just be poor imitations of Bollywood films. That is because Sikhs in India generally live up to the Bollywood hype. They actually see themselves as 'entertainers' .....to 'entertain' the masses by jumping up and down like performing monkeys shouting the occassional 'chak de' and 'balle balle'. Strangely, the average Sikh in India actually thinks that position in life is actually respeced by the Indians. Because, when Sikhs 'entertain' the Indian masses, the Indians are pleased, the Sikhs there mistake the smiles and pleasure for respect. In that respect you can't blame the Indians for portraying us as slightly stupid because our actions seem to verify that. Througout our history we have always done better when we have looked north towards central Asia rather than south towards India. We did that during our Khalsa Raj and we did that when looking for Sikh words such as sardar, dastar, ardas, khalsa, nihung etc etc. When it comes to movies we need to do that again by taking inspiration from the neo-realism of current Iranian cinema. Such films would cost less than $100,000 to make and would win international recognition. I say lets go for the neo-realism because movies such as Sadda Haq, although good because they showed the truth, still contain the melodramatic bad acting etc that turn the international audience off. As 'Punjabis' however, we have a tendancy to be melodramatic. When we make a movie about the Sikh struggle we tend to try and fit every occurrence into the storyline to the point that the story no longer makes cinematic sense. We need to change our way of thinking and realise that with neo-realism a simple story say, for example, of a boy that has lost his school book in the fields and his struggle to find the book, can portray the mass killings of Sikhs in the background. There are better and smarter ways of telling our story.

  8. Some Nihang Dals do Akhand Path separately though, they do it on their own for their own laha. I don't think this is wrong at all. Was making a distinction between in the west where some people pay money for Akhand Path (which is right because it's sewa), but not attend at all. It's best to do Sehaj Path on tape and listen very, very slowly than to not attend Akhand Path at all.

  9. Nagar Kirtans were begun by the sixth Guru ji. This was during a time when the worldly emperors would take out processions. As the Sixth Guru was introducing the concept of temporal authority to the sangat, the nagar kirtan was a part of this process of honouring Guru ji as a spiritual and temporal Lord. Really what it comes down to for the individual is what you choose to focus on. You can go to the Gurdwara and waste time in the nindya, the politics, the food, the socialising, or you can focus on Naam. The same thing goes with the nagar kirtans. Although I do agree that a lot of the gandh that people try to bring into the nagar kirtans should be removed/blocked by the organising committees.

If we think, how can we do this if we didn't have any paintings or pictures that people claim are false and fabricated ? More importantly, what exactly does the term 'Guru' mean in the shabad ? Read carefully, does it mean Guru-teacher,like ten gurus or Guru- the transcendent lord ? One has to look at this shabad very closely and carefully to get the real message in my opinion.

This is because there were none at the SYP show...! However, If any Sehajdhari wish to attend the meeting they will be held in most local Gurughars (see Image) and are MORE then welcome to attend and are encouraged to attend the meeting as they are apart of our wider Sikh Community..! So instead of CREATING A LOAD OF CRAP get down to your local meeting and be apart of the SIKH YOUTH FORUM....!

  13. Landmark Settlement for Sikh Middle Schooler Targeted by Bullies; Sikh Coalition Files Complaint; Justice Department Takes Action May 11, 2013 (New York, NY) - In an unprecedented victory for Sikh students nationwide, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) entered into a landmark settlement agreement with the DeKalb County School District (School District) in Atlanta, Georgia on behalf of a Sikh victim of school bullying. This is the first time the federal government has entered into a settlement on a school bullying matter involving a Sikh student. The settlement sends a clear message to school districts nationwide that they must take effective action to end bias-based bullying of all school children, including Sikh children. The Sikh middle-schooler, whose identity is being withheld because he is a minor, had been subjected to years of bias-based bullying and verbal and physical harassment by a number of different students. The Sikh student was referred to as “Osama,” a “terrorist,” and “curryhead,” and told he has a “bomb on his head,” and to “go back to your country.” These incidents occurred both at school and on the school bus. He also suffered physical harassment. In one incident, a few strands of his hair were cut by another student during class. The Sikh student reported these incidents to the School District and although it responded to some of the complaints by disciplining the harassers, the measures were ineffective in stopping the harassment. Since October 2012, the Sikh Coalition has represented the student and placed the School District on notice of ongoing harassment, and demanded safety plans and effective remedial measures to diminish the hostile educational environment, including anti-harassment training. After repeated inaction from the School District, the Sikh Coalition filed legal complaints with the Department of Justice, alleging violations of federal law. The Sikh Coalition’s complaints prompted a federal investigation that directly led to the historic public settlement. The settlement, which remains in effect until the end of the 2014-2015 school year, provides, in part, that: The school district will immediately implement a safety plan to ensure that the student is safe at middle school and at high school; The school district will make available a Punjabi interpreter for the student’s parents and ensure all essential written documents are translated into Punjabi if requested; The school district, working with a consultant mutually agreed upon by the DOJ, must develop and implement mandatory age-appropriate anti-harassment training for all students and staff who interact with students at the middle school and high school. The training must include a discussion on the root causes of religious and national origin harassment and harms, including post-9/11 backlash and the perpetuation of negative stereotypes impacting the Sikh, Muslim, Arab-American, and South Asian communities. Read the DOJ's Press Release Read the full settlement agreement Read press coverage in Atlanta Journal-Constitution Read press coverage in the San Francisco Chronicle This settlement demonstrates the DOJ’s commitment to ending the bias-based bullying and harassment of Sikh students. According to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, rates of bullying against Sikh children “range from roughly half to over three-quarters.” The Sikh Coalition’s various bullying reports confirm that Sikh students suffer high rates of bias-based bullying and harassment at schools nationwide. Read Sikh Coalition Bullying Reports and Resources Here Resources for Sikh Children & School Educators “Our schools should be places where children quench their intellectual curiosity, not places where they endure hatred and fear. Many students and parents do not realize that bullying can often be a legal problem, especially when a school district fails to take appropriate action. This settlement sends a clear message to schools nationwide that we will no longer tolerate inadequate measures to address school bullying. We commend the DOJ and the School District for ensuring the safety of Sikh youth and procuring this historic settlement,” said Gurjot Kaur, Staff Attorney at the Sikh Coalition. Jocelyn Samuels, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at DOJ stated, “Students of all faiths must be protected from harassment and other forms of discrimination. We commend the district for stepping forward and putting student safety first. We are encouraged by the district’s resolve to support and provide anti-harassment training on issues facing students from the Sikh, Muslim, Arab-American and South Asian communities.” “I think things will be better for my son now because of this settlement. I do not have the words to thank the Sikh Coalition for their work the past few months,” said the student’s father. “We can’t thank the Sikh Coalition enough for bringing us relief and for adequately handling an extreme bullying situation that our family has faced for years,” said the student’s sister. "I want other students, who may have been bullied like me, to always have hope and to know that it’s never too late to speak up,” said the Sikh student. If you or your child has experienced bias-based bullying in the DeKalb County School District and/or any other school district across the country, please contact the Sikh Coalition for legal assistance here. We urge all students to remember they are not alone. As always, we urge all Sikhs to practice their faith fearlessly. http://salsa.wiredforchange.com

  16. Sarbat Jee, homosexuality is not compatible with Sikhi. You have totally misunderstood Gurmat Sidhaants. Since the start Gurmat has always advocated Grishti jeevan between a man and woman. Humans by nature are born with all sorts of urges and weaknesses. But Gurmat teaches Sikhs not to indulge and give in to those urges and weaknesses. Sikhs are taught to adopt rehit, meditate on Naam, read/hear Gurbani whilst controlling those urges and weaknesses. Those who indulge in wordly urges and human weaknesses end up in the cycle of life and death(charasee lakh joons)

Fortunately, my knows how to sew but she doesn't how to cut the cloth and all that. Maybe make a video and upload on youtube etc. Thank You, it'll be good sewa to sangat. Gurfateh! And it'd be sort of expensive to get em shipped from UK or Punjab; they're already hard to find here

  21. Can Johal tell us how a seeker reaches that stage. He does not know how to quote a shabad as his intention is to condemn Mala as revealed in his previous post to this where he sarcastically says photo shows Mala in Guru sahib's hand.So his is literal interpretation.

  22. Yeah I know it wasn't a trick question, it's a good question. I do think when you get a lot of anand from either Raag Kirtan/Kirtan/Path/Simran and shabad starts to vibrate in your being Darshan happens automatically and it's not explainable. I also want to know what everyone thinks.

  25. Some Nihang shownis/Dals do multiple parkash of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It's good in a sense that each GurSikh is reading Gurbani, but in my opinion* Akhand Paths shouldn't happen like this. At some Gurdwaras I see multiple rooms with multiple Akhand Paths going on by families and none of the family members go to sit and listen to Paath. Maybe the practice is not wrong, but perhaps just the fault in the moorakhs who have the Akhand Paths and not go to listen? Not sure

  26. The shabad condemns those who pretend to be religious outwardly but do not contemplate upon Waheguru. Mala is a means to an end to aid for concentration.Mala is not the central point. Moreover shabad is not posted by you. It was posted by johal with a sarcastic attitude. Read my previous post carefully before jumping to gun. I have written that Mala with every breath stage does not come so easily. For that you require concentration for years.

  40. pappi ji I also had a lot of respect for Bhai Ram singh. But he lost his respect because of his duplicate role in panthic affairs. He was aligned with Sarna. You do not know that it took very hard work for a Gursikh to document blasphemy utterances of Ragi darshan lal. The case was under process. That singh was called by Sangat Of Seattle to honor him. Ram singh was there and he cooked up false stories relating to family life of that Singh and tried his best so that sangat does not call him. Still sangat called him and they told him about this Ram Singh. I also heard that he is collecting money. I am not sure how far this is correct as i have not come in contact with him. But first case is hundred percent correct. That should not be the character of a person who wants to become Damdami taksal chief. In my opinion Dhumma is also not that good but he has proved a good manager by building that memorial.
