Members of parliament and cabinet ministers distributed kerosene oil and white phosphorous. Witnesses talked about the use of rubber tyres to trap the target, create thick clouds of toxins and facilitate combustion. I was a teenager in Delhi. A mob passed our block, attacking Sikhs on the street. We hid in a neighbour’s house. The few hours we were there fill a huge space in my mind. I’ve not been able to articulate those few hours, the burned remains of the books and buildings I saw later and the tiny particles of ash floating in the air. For years I tried hard to forget those moments. Raj, the narrator of Helium, faces a huge predicament. His own father, a senior police officer, facilitated the violence in November 1984. The police were under direct control of the government. Under the watchful eyes of the cops, a mob directed by senior Congress party leaders burned alive Raj’s beloved professor. Later, Raj asks a question, which may be significant to younger generations in India: How do sons and daughters deal with the crimes of their fathers? I wrote my first story, Arjun, in 2000. I had flown to San Francisco for a conference but skipped most of it and finished the first draft in 14 straight hours. Arjun is told from the point of view of a Sikh boy travelling with his mother and grandfather on the day of Indira Gandhi’s assassination. My plan was to allow Arjun to grow into a novel but when I picked it up, I felt a narrative crisis. Most known models were inadequate to narrate November 1984. I had to figure out a new way to write. Helium was a resolution of a creative crisis. In 2008, after finishing my first novel, I was invited to Delhi to work with HIV-positive orphans. They wanted ghost stories. After storytelling, I took long walks through the city and it was then the ghosts of 1984 returned. As I processed those Delhi experiences, walking with the ghosts, I started writing. Helium has a hybrid form to better access the pogroms of November 1984 and the years that followed. It let me reveal traces of the horrific. To do it otherwise – as in a human rights’ report – is a paralysing affair and affects our capacity as humans to engage fully with the crime of crimes. Helium’s hybrid form allowed me to pose questions such as: ‘What happened?’ and ‘What could have happened?’ It also allowed me to create distance. Despite all this, it was not easy to write. Helium involved a lot of research and is informed by survivor and relief-worker testimonials and is based on oral histories and private archives. These are stories of complicated grief and collective trauma. Unfinished mourning. Not just memory but post-memory and the transmission of trauma. It was not easy. Instead of debating semantics, I hope we can be objective and agree there is no way to physically implement Sri Akaal Takhat Hukamanam "jivein Punjab vich hosagda". A respectable Sri Akaal Takhat Jathedar that the Panth can unite under will automatically elect better committee members. We have no unity, everyone's busy pushing their own agenda(s).   23. Not entirely sure what you are asking but a few basic points below. Hopefully I've not over simplified it for you. One mala has 108 beads. So to do jaap of Mool Mantr you just recite one Mool Mantr per bead moving along continuously until you reach the end of the mala. To do 32 mala you need to repeat what I've just said 32 times. Sometimes you see people with a smaller mala. These have 27 beads so 4 small malas equal one large one (4 * 27 = 108). The whole point of using a mala is to keep count. I suppose when you are doing a large number of malas then you need an extra mala to keep count of how many malas you've done. Alternatively, get yourself a "clicker" or phone app which you can use to increment the count. Please remember that using a mala is just a tool to help you progress spiritually by setting you a target.

Varous Panthic organizations, including the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee, and the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib visited the site where bundles of discarded Gurbani Pothees and Angs were dumped by the Jawahar Singh Kirpal Singh publishing company, which prides itself as the “oldest publishers of Sikh religious books”. Images and videos of the desecration were captured by Sikh Channel UK and other independent media outlets in Punjab Representatives from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee stated that they have been complaining about the ongoing desecration of Gurbani by these private publishers, yet the Sri Akal Takht Sahib and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee have not taken any concrete steps to stop the beadbi. The sangat that had gathered at the site immediately began to collect the discarded Angs and Pothees, and were being transported to a proper location where the damaged Angs and Pothees would be given utmost respect before there are cremated according to Sikh maryada. In 2007, Panthic.org had published evidence of Jawahar Singh Kirpal Singh publishing saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji containing commercial advertisements and anti-Gurmat matter inside the sacred saroops. Professor Uday Singh was well known in the Toronto area for his dedication to teaching children Gurmukhi and Gurmat. For over 40 years Professor Uday Singh taught young children Gurmukhi, Gurmat and Santhia at his Gurmat School, all for free. He was a Math professor at the Laurentian University in Ontario and after retiring he began to focus all his time and attention towards teaching children Gurmukhi. . Prof Uday Singh He started out in a small basement where children would come to learn to read and write Punjabi, he was then able to buy a small unit where he could teach more children, in a school setting. He never asked for a cent from the students in return, all he asked was for them to put in the effort to learn what he was teaching. He taught thousands of students in the Toronto area, many of whom would not be able to read or write Punjabi if not for his efforts. He taught the children of his earlier students, and then their children as well—spanning three generations in the Toronto area. Professor Uday Singh was a companion of the great Sikh, Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh for 16 years and doing seva in Amrit Sanchars with Bhai Sahib for many years. He then immigrated to Canada in 1961 and had never gone back. He was a staunch supporter of Khalistan, which cost him his Indian passport and the ability to ever go back to his original home. Professor Uday Singh wrote many books during his life, one of them named I made friends with a Saint about his time spent with Bhai Sahib Bhai Randhir Singh. Another of his books was titled The Waning and Waxing of the Khalistan Movement, which is the book he believed cost him his Indian Passport and got him put on the black list. “I have reason to believe it is this book poisoned them against me and my passport was taken away,” he said once. Professor Uday Singh provided financial support to the families of Ajaib Singh Bagri and Inderjit Singh Reyat during their Air India Bombing trials. He believed them to be innocent of the crimes they were accused of, saying in a 2007 interview, “No Sikh is guilty of doing that. The Hindu government got it done.” Professor Uday Singh’s body was draped with the flag of Khalistan at the public viewing—his support for Khalistan was strong throughout his life. He sent monthly checks to the families of Inderjit Singh Reyat and Ajaib Singh Bagri saying, “I have every sympathy with the whole family, especially with the mother who has suffered most. To me they are like a bunch of flowers, very fragrant and very well-behaved and high-quality people to me.” Although he was financially stretched by running his free Gurmat School, he still managed to send monthly checks to the families. Professor Uday Singh was known to live on only 10% of his earnings and give 90% towards Panthik causes. A Sikh is obliged only to give 10% towards the Panth and live off the remaining 90%. Professor Uday Singh’s body was draped with the flag of Khalistan at the public viewing—his support for Khalistan was strong throughout his life. He was an accomplished Gursikh, having Sangat of many renowned Gursikhs in India from the mid-1940s until 1961. After immigrating to Canada in 1961 he dedicated all his time to teaching children Gurmukhi and instilling Gurmat values in them. He will be missed by the thousands of people he taught and met, and thousands more who heard of his undying need to teach the future generations of Sikhs. He had strict adherence to Gurmat and was not afraid to voice his opinion no matter who stood with him or against him. The Panth has lost a great jewel in Professor Uday Singh, however his legacy lives on in the thousands of people he touched and inspired throughout his life.

Not even 0.1%. and if you beleive that the Sikhs today are in the same league of the Sikhs of Gurus time, then you are living in an ideal world.

  30. jaspreet, your post smacks of idealism, not realism. and stop twisting what i am saying, if you think that being amritdhari automatically makes you better to handle the job of running a gurdwara, why are so mnay gurdwaras in the UK, which are run by amritdharis performing so badly. why is it that the gurdwaras run by people elected on the basis that they are amritdhari and so they must know what they are doing, making a mess of the gurdwara s and messing up the next generation. the truth is that it is best to have amritdharis who are actually good at management running gurdwaras. failing that then its best to get kesadharis who know how to. i have never said a mona is better equipped, just that being amritdhari is not the only requirement for gurdwara management. stop making out words in my name, you are beginning to remind me of some of the people who i have worked with in the past. yes amritdhari ones amongst them.

  31. This is a great step by the Akal Takht. It is interesting that as soon as a decision is made, people will start to criticising it. There is nothing in the Hukumnama which stop monas from taking part in sewa or any functioning of the Gurdwara apart from taking a leadership role in the committee. Patit does mean someone who has broken their rehat but sabut soorat means that the committee members should at least be Keshdharis.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji to be translated into 13 languages Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 18 The Guru Granth Sahib Seva Mission has taken it upon itself to translate Guru Granth Sahib into 13 prominent Indian languages so that people across the country can follow the path shown by the Gurus. The translation and publication of the granth is being undertaken so that the translated versions are ready for publication and distribution on the eve of the of 300 years of installation of the holy book as the Guru of the Sikhs in 2008. Mr Gurinderpal Singh Dhanaula, chief sevadar of the mission, said many people from other parts of the country had urged them to undertake this exercise as the reach of the granth was universal and they were facing problems in reading the holy book. He said they were encouraged when the granth was successfully translated into Urdu by Baba Ravinderpal Singh of Talwandi Sabo. They then decided that they would approach prominent regional scholars to get the granth translated into 13 prominent languages. He said the granth would be initially translated into Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telugu, Sindhi, Malayalam and Sanskrit. The next phase would be to get it translated into major foreign languages, he added. Work on the Oriya and Tamil versions was underway and was being done by Dr N.C. Panda of the Sambhalpur University and Kannan R. of the Madurai University, respectively. Mr Dhanaula said initially they would get 5000 copies each of the granth printed in Urdu and Hindi while 1,000 copies each would be available in rest of the regional languages. Besides, they would also get 5 lakh copies of Japji Sahib published in Urdu and Hindi while 1 lakh each would be available for the people in other regional languages. Commenting on the financial implications of such a massive project, he said while the SGPC has not even bothered to reply to their letters, the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee chief Paramjit Singh Sarna has assured all possible help while offers were pouring in from various religious and social organisations across the country and abroad. Similarly, Capt Amarinder Singh had also promised help for the project and the Central Government too has assured that they would chip in financially and otherwise, he added. He said others who are helping them include former Gurdwara Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Bhai Manjit Singh, Dr Kharak Singh, Dr Brijpal Singh, Dr Dharam Singh, Dr Kehar Singh, Prof Jasbir Singh, Founder Principal, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh Gurmat Missionary College, Chaunta, and others. He also added that they had written to various universities across the country to recommend names of scholars who could undertake the task. He said boarding and lodging arrangements for the visiting scholars had been made in SAS Nagar.

  38. Waheguru Here is a Taksali Gutka of Damdami Taksal which Purtan Singhs used. Baba Mohan Singh Bindranwale expliens Shudh Ucharan on hard words. Baba Ji at the end of the Gutka comments on how Chaupai Sahib was cut short and who did it and Baba Gurbachan Singh's thought on it too. The end part of the Gutka is worth reading it also expliens which doras were cut out and Baba Ji shows from Purtan Granths that these doras were in the Nitnem.   40. i'm so glad you made this point before I did...i've never understood why Guru Ji cannot be translated if it was already done under the command of Dasveh Paathsha Ji. before everyone does interject i think if the ruling from Akal Takht is not to then fine, but I think the translations and phonetic translations ought to be made. I know that had they not have been, I would never have learned paath and probably wouldn't care about sikhi today. I believe the translated versions should be in Gutkeh or Sehnchiya but not the embodiment of Guru Ji and people ought to treat them with infinate respect but bow only to the one true Guru. I feel that many of the worlds problems could be solved and also think that if sikhi is to survive it must expand. people who would otherwise never have heard the words of our Guru ought to be afforded the same opportunities as we have been.
