  2. With recent funding pleas from the likes of Sikh Channel, Mata Sahib Kaur Academy and many other Gurdwara committing to more debt, it looks like it's so important that Sikh Insititutes address their longevity of financial survival. Sikh groups/Gurdwaras need to understand about maintaining a sustainable business model. It sounds very straightforward, but how do Sikh groups/Gurdwaras move smoothly from begging for money wherever it can to having a sustainable funding stream? I apologise for refering to Guru ji's Sewa as a business, but maybe by applying a commercial approach we may prevent ourselves from panicking with last minute threats of closure. Common business sense tells us that sustainability starts with planning, not with chasing funding. Gurdwaras must be run in a way where the custodians know exactly what they need, what it will cost and what their Gurdwara costs to run. They need to make sure their sums are right from the word go and refrain from making financial commitments with the Bank for any expansion if they are still struggling to meet their normal commitments. There is no need to expand or take out an additional loan if the Gurdwara/Organisation in it's current state is able to satisfy the moral obligation to Gurmat and Sikh Maryada. As Sangat, we must also demand accountability and implement controls/audits in the way our funds are utilised. This is something Sangat still shy away from. If you have donated £1000 of your hard earned money for sustainable Panthic sewa, then we must ensure that we are satisfied that £1000 has been put to efficient use. Many committee/sewadars remain unchallenged about mismanagement of the Guru's Golak and they simply carry on misusing the Sangats money.Unfortunately, it seems, nowadays some Gurdwaras underestimate the costs involved. In the end, the very thing that was supposed to be earning a sustainable income starts costing the Sangat money. And before you know it the Gurdwara/Organisations spends more time and energy chasing money to keep what was once its brilliant sustainable funding idea alive than it does fulfilling its Gurmat aims. Also, due to our increasing splits, there are a lot of Gurdwaras/Organisations golak's out there chasing the same Sangat's funds, and this sort of increasing competition quickly erodes the reliability of those donations being available. Common sense also tells us that if we pool our funding together, then it's likely to go further. But we are stuck in a culture of setting up new Gurdwaras and not working with each other. Sikhs are a financially successful community and we are quite a philanthropic bunch, we do donate large sums in the Guru's golaks. There is therefore a a strong steady flow of regular donations available from the Sikh sangat and it needs be utilised in an efficient, responsible manner.

  7. Marriage could be optional, but that doesn't take away the importance of it. Neither am I saying you are saing it does. The Gurus got married and this is one way the Gurus showed us that it is very important. We can say that the householders life is strongly stressed in Sikhi. Speaking on the Gurbani you provided. If you look at the state of the Sikhs today. Majority of them are scared of marriage. They see it has one real bad thing and the yogis that ran from the world also say it in the same light (along with everything else in the world). They want to take up the renunciated lifestyle because it's easier, not because that's what Satguru blessed them with. When a brother or sister gives there life to the Guru this path made for you comes clear. Whether that be married or not.

  8. According to mahapurakh marriage is optional, in terms of singhnia most mahapurakh who are female are brahmcharis (not married), maharaj says in bani that both grist and brahmcharj are accepted. nwnk nwmu visAw ijsu AMqir prvwxu igrsq audwsw jIau ]4]40]47] naanak naam vasiaa jis anthar paravaan girasath oudhaasaa jeeo |4|40|47| O Nanak, if the Naam, the Name of the Lord, dwells within the mind, one is approved and accepted, whether he is a house-holder or a renunciate. ||4||40||47|| khu nwnk guru pUrw ByitAw prvwxu igrsq audws ]4]4]5] kahu naanak gur pooraa bhaettiaa paravaan girasath oudhaas |4|4|5| Says Nanak, one who meets the Perfect Guru, is celebrated both as a householder as well as a renunciate. ||4||4||5|| Just like many other things in life like education you have a choice, the only marriage of utmost importance is that of your soul and parma aatma (maharaj) Don't worry about these sort of things until you feel you need to, talk to mahapurakh who will give you insight into this.

  9. Guru Granth Sahib as you all may know has a lot of mythological references and it is always good to know who and what the story behind these references are so i will be posting mythological references that have been made in Guru Granth Sahib in alphabetical order from the book called dictionary of mythological references in Guru Granth Sahib. Starting with Adam Adam source: the Koran; the Bible Reference in Guru Granth Sahib- ਬਾਬਾ ਆਦਮ ਕਉ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਦਰਿ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥ He bestowed His Grace on Adam, the father of mankind, ਉਨਿ ਭੀ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਘਨੇਰੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥ who then lived in paradise for a long time. ||2|| Surinder Singh Kohli Translation - When God saw towards Adam with his unapproving eyes, how could he stay long in heaven then? (Bhario Kabir, p.1161) Comments: The references about Adam in Guru Granth Sahib is a back-handed compliment. On the face of it, it can be translated thus: "When God showed his eyes to Adam, he enjoyed heaven greatly." In the first few chapters of the Bible, it is stated that after God had created the universe, he took some of the dust of the earth and created Adam, a man. He was kept in the Garden of Eden, where there were fruit trees, rivers and other things, which he could desire. But still Adam was a lone man. Therefore God created his wife Eve from one of his ribs. Both of them lived happily. They had been forbidden by God to eat the fruit of one of the trees. This tree was the Tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. The couple did not yet know the evil. One day the devil entered the Garden in the form of a snake and persuaded Eve to eat the fruit of the above mentioned tree. Eve tasted some of it and gave some to Adam. Thus on the inducement of the Devil, they broke the law of the Garden and no longer remained innocent. As a punishment, they were driven out of the Garden. They had disobeyed God and had brought evil into the world. Next will be : Ad Bhavani

  10. For those that are in contact with the people that are incharge at Mata Sahib Kaur Academy, could you please ask them to update their site to include the current finical situation? Because it would really help if people could go on there site and see the issue about funds and also at same time see what great work they are doing. If we do get all major Sikh channels and Sikh websites to raise awareness, we need a place we could send them online or over the phone so they can talk to someone if they need to. People donate more if they can really talk to the people going through the hard time. I know there is a meeting being held but putting more information online would help more people. LIke I am sure people want to know why did they wait so long before bring this to sangats awarness. the amount of money they are short is not pocket change, they should have seen this coming and began raising awareness months before this payment was due, preferablly when the got the first extension.

  11. Agastya Source: Mahabharta, Ramayana, Uttara Ramayana, Bhagavata Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana, Skandha Purana Reference in Guru Granth Sahib Through the nectar, the moon, the wish-fulfilling cow, Lakshmi, the miraculous tree of life, Sikhar the sun's horse, and Dhanavantar the wise physician - all arose from the ocean, the lord of rivers; ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਰੁ ਮਫੀਟਸਿ ਰੀ ॥੪॥ and yet, because of its karma, its saltiness has not left it. ||4|| Episode: In the above reference, the name of Agastya has not been given, but is implied. Agastya was a great rishi (Seer) of his time. When Indra killed Vritrasura, a demon, who was an enemy of the gods, his allies, the Kalakeya demons hid themshelves at the bottom of the ocean, from where they used to come to earth and devour the Brahmins, ruthelessly killing them. They also caused much damage to the hemitages of Vasishta and Cyavana. The Brahmins on earth were terribly afraid and prayed to the gods to protect them. The gods entreated Vishnu for the protection of the brahmins. Visnu told them that the ocean was dried up and the Kalakeya were caught, nothing could be done and this task could only be performed by Agastya. Agastya could not refuse the request made by gods, therefore he drank the whole ocean to the wonder of the spectators. The gods caught hold of all the demons and killed them. But now another problem arose for which the gods were told by Vishnu that the ocean would be filled again when Bhagirath, by his penance, would bring the Ganges on the earth. There is another version of the above episode. In order to save the world from the wrath of the demons, the gods arranged a sacrificial feast to which the ocean was also invited but did not come because of his ego, therefore Agastya drank him. When the beings of the sea began to writhe in agony, because of the want of water, Agastya, made water and filled the ocean again. This is the reason of the saltishness of the water of ocean. This is the reason of the saltishness of the water of the ocean. Comments: When the ocean was churned by the gods and demons jointly, fourteen precious gems (chaudeh rattan) came out of it.They included the ambrosia moon, elysian cow, lakshmi, the miraculous tree, the suns steed and the physician dhanantar. But still the water of the ocean could not become sweet and remained saltish because of his past Karmas Next will be Agni...

  21. Sikh Channel is easily the best of the three. The live discussions on issues happening now are invaluable. If the Channel is so strapped for cash then why is it expanding its base in the Midlands to aquire offices in London? Why use money on expansion when you do not have enough money to cover the running costs ?

  22. Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh The sikhi parchar being done at the academy is amazing, locally and dare I say nationally there is no where that even comes close! On a personal note I started to attend the academy about 9 months ago, I had only just started keeping my kesh. I was so impressed and inspired by the kids there, some as young as 2-3 years old that I started going there on a regular basis. Because of the academy I am now learning gurmukhi, shastar vidya and have be shown how to do seva of maharaj Dhan Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Kids are taught kirtan, panjabi, gatka, gurmat principles, self defence, seva of maharaj, the list is endless! The kids there literally run the place from chaur sahib seva to sukhasan seva, they prepare the deg and help with langar preparation aswell, take Hukamnamas and perform ardas and also Sri Japji Sahib Ji raol during Akand Path Sahibs. Anyone who has not been to the academy should come and see it for themselves, it will leave you speechless. A 13 year old buchanghi at the academy recently said to me I see you as my cousin, hurry up and take amrit so we can be brothers!!!!!! This place has to be saved! best of all............theres no committee

  24. Ad Bhavani Souce: Purans Reference in Guru Granth Sahib ਤੂ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਹੀ ਆਦਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ ॥ You are called Ad Bhavani ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕੀ ਬਰੀਆ ਕਹਾ ਛਪਾਨੀ ॥੪॥ At the time of liberation, where will you hide then? ||4|| (Gond Namdev p. 874) Comments: The word Ad means 'from the beginning' and Bhavani is another name of Durga, the wife of Shiva. Thus Ad Bhavani may connote the Shakti of Shiva. The word Ad also gives the sense of 'the firs' or 'the original'. Ad Bhavani may be differentiated from Ad Shakti or Primal Power. Next will be Agastya

  25. Its my 3rd time coming to India and would love to meet fellow Sikhs, especially if theres any programs geared towards young men. I remember one time going to a gurdwara and doing santhiyaa at this gurdwara for 2 weeks when I was there last time. I remember a young man, who cut his kesh, and with guru's kirpa vowed not to cut it again. I thought it was really worthwhile when I went last time to check it out again. Cheers!

  27. Marriage is of utmost importance. Your view is your view, but as per Bhai Gurdaas Jee your view is wrong; see the following vaar. There is no translation on STTM, so FYI the last tuk translates to 'the path of the householder is the highest path amongst all paths' For those that do not know, I should also add that Dhan Guru Arjan Dev Jee gave the writings of Bhai Gurdaas Jee the title of a 'key' which can open the secrets of Gurbani.

  29. if it is wriiten in your karam it will happen no matter what, if it isn't, then no matter what u do, it will not happen, nothing is in our hands, all pre determined by almighty vaheguru. If u r resistant to the thought of it just yet, could be inner fears and anxieties or maybe due to looking at others unhappy around you. If you are genuinely against it then maybe vaheguru has some other seva in mind for you, if it isnt written then, even if you get a hundred rishtey, they will all fizzle out, because some things are not in his hukam. Just go with the flow and ask vaheguru for what you really want truly inside.

  30. Are you surprised? Have you seen the potential options for Sikh males and females who've been raised to be respectful, responsible and decent? Whilst some will say "'pray to Waheguru and you'll receive what you deserve" is good advice, trying telling this to the parents of the kids who just want to marry their kids off a.s.a.p.

  31. Good points. I think 'whiteness' has something to do with the favouritism that you speak of myself. At some stage Anglos decided that Jews were 'white' enough to deserve better treatment. This is interesting as this was not always the case and historically Jews have been on the receiving end of much negative discrimination in Europe. So this elevation and positive consideration of Jews in the Anglosphere is a fairly recent phenomenon and one can easily find all sorts of evidence of normalised antisemiticism in European society (i.e. in literature) not too long ago, if you look. In any case I think there is also a case of trying to forge ahead on our own steam rather than form alliances with other dubious quoms. Look at how Sikhs were the 'darkies of choice' of the English post Panjab annexation but how despite that, when push came to shove they have always turned a blind eye towards our problems like at partition and the whole 1984 onwards stuff. The truth is that we have to learn to take care of ourselves without having to submit ourselves to any other quoms. It's a tough job but one that has a solid precedent in our society with the very founding of the Khalsa. We should learn that getting involved in other people's dodgy politics has always been the ruin of us. Besides Jews are a very cerebral quom when most of our lot seem to be block headed pendus (myself included!).

  33. OK, I actually just watched some of the video. The women's probably got mental health issues. I'm saying this in seriousness, not as some sort of insult. She probably believes she is Mata Gujri in her own head. The biggest issues here to my mind is why thE heck so many apnay jump so quickly into some pakhandi baba sant dera. They should know better and in the end this just highlights a complete lack of faith with Sikhi anyway.

  40. again these values and moral stance is not permanent and change in a instant. Even Gurbani is testament to this. So a young man/woman steadfast in sikhi, may not like this or feel the same way he/she does in their 30s/40s the way they felt in their teens/20s. As for assessing someone's personality, this will take you your whole life. The personality of a person again is not permanent.

  42. LOL at sikhi-centric views on marriage, many many gursikhs have chosen in the past and present to not get married. If being sikhi-centric if about devoting your every resource for the betterment of Sikhi then you can use your time to do parchaar and help sikhs understand Sikhi. Just having kids and raising them as gursikhs will not necessarily make them kamaee vaale gursikhs when they have minds of their own. Doing parchaar with your life, or other sevas is just as good as getting married and having kids.

  44. Agree. Sikh Channel was excellent in breaking news about Ludhiana Kaand and the recent Kaand in Pind Bhikhi/Sant Baba Baljit Singh Ji Dadu Sahib Wale's arrest. It presents Panthic news very well. There's some way for it to go before it is truly Panthic, but it took a tentative step forward with the show it permitted explaining Dasam Granth/Dasam Bani which it aired live on Sunday evening - personally, I found it an extremely inspiring show. If it carries on like this, it will gain the confidence of the youth.

  45. Perhaps 6 months ago I would have never said this, but if we loose the Sikh Channel we loose a topical voice for Sikhs. The live studio show format of Sikh Channel is a potential asset to the kaum and we have still not used it to it's full capacity. I must confess, when speaking to Davy Bal he threw the ball back in our court. If more articulate naujwaan are willing to put themselves forward on the Sikh Channel live show discussions than we can break the monopoly of the same old skool/stage secretary voices. We still find naujwaan too shy or not committed enough to talk about Panthic issues. Sangat TV and Sikh TV are still not up to scratch with panthic discussion programmes and that's the niche Sikh Channel hold over them. We must not let the Sikh Channel close!

  48. The householders life is very important in Sikhi. Many people don't marry because they are scared of a married life. This whole new way of living without getting married amongst people is some what like the lifestyle of the yogis that ran away from the world, scared that maya might get them. You can do as much paat as you want and still Sri Waheguru ji is going to be far away because that self conceit or selfish mind is present. As Sikhs of the Guru we have duites to strengthen the Khalsa Panth and spread Gurmat. Raising a kid into Gurmat is a task that takes alot of time away from the parents. The parents have to devote long hours each day and while going through the whole process the married couple learn just how hard it is to create and then let go. Those that are not willing to get married and then say we still do paat have not got the essence of Sikhi. Sikhi is about devoting your life to Guru Sahib and then to this world. But what do these people do. They don't get married do paat as a ritual and then look forward to having extra time for leisure activities. It's called living life up. These people don't worship Sri Waheguru ji, they worship that leisure time. And then the excuse married couple are not happy. So what does that mean. Have you not read in Gurbani the words even in sin I am happy because im with you (Sri Waheguru ji). These lame excuses go nowhere and Gurmat tells the true story behind these lame excuses. Before people jump on the Sant train and say look at them. Let's look at the Sant lifestyle. There are many Sants out there that don't marry and then there are the many Sants out there that do marry. These Sants don't run away from the householder lifestyle, but they take on a huge responsibility by making the whole world their children. They let go of all the single life desires and completely devote themselves to the world. They don't waste a second on themselves. The paat they do is for Satguru and to make the world a better place. They start Gurmat schools, other institutions, they go town to town, village to village helping out whoever needs help. So they are not selfish at all. There leisure time is helping others. Do these people not realize if there parents didn't get married they would not exist today. Then who would have given you the chance to do paat? It takes man and woman to bring a soul and flesh into this world. This is also selfish of them for not living to realize this very fact.

  49. Why is marriage so important to some of you? It should be the individual's decision, rather than just something that is expected because it has become a social norm. If you do not find a partner who you love and who loves you, then why should you be expected to marry into a loveless marriage? In our culture, women are encouraged to blindly obey their husbands, whom often the parents have chosen because of the man's family status or something. Is there anything wrong with remaining a single, strong and independent woman throughout your life? I don't think there is. I understand the argument for procreation – as you say, apparently "our kind" are questioning marriage which will thus have repercussions for the panth in the future. Although, I have not met one Sikh who hasn't got married or who isn't completely infatuated with the idea of marriage, so i don't see why it's a problem that a few individuals are making the decision to remain unmarried. The individual's decision not to get married could be fuelled by many personal factors, and so to look down on Sikhs who choose not to follow this norm is very narrow minded. "what is stopping sikhs getting married today? they worry about stuff like compatiblity, with 100% shared interests or that their husband/wife has to have movie star looks etc" What is wrong with taking the compatibility of your potential life partner into account? Is it not important to have shared interests, or doesn't it matter if you like your husband/ wife at all? This ideology seems to be very backwards, in support for the traditional loveless arranged marriages. You should not just settle for anyone to spend your life with. You must realise and respect that it is not every woman's purpose in life to have a family or a husband.

  50. Your basing your post on two extremes. Why not take the middle path between these two extremes. Where you look at the person personality, which will change and and put more weight on the person view on Sikhi and how strong they are in Sikhi. It's not an either or decision to be made, where these traits in a person are pinned against each other, but work together to show what kind of person he or she is. If they can't stand on Sikhi together, then these two should not get married. But if personality difference is not shared to the last digit, this don't mean they should break it off. Like said before personality changes and as long as the couple keep there feet grounded on Sikhi teachings, they will have an actual marriage where problems arise, but their Gurmat paths will help them resolve and become stronger. There are so many marriages falling apart that just went on personality of the person. And there is nothing wrong with parents picking a person for their son or daughter as long as the parents have their son or daughters best interest at heart and know what they want in their spouse.
