  2. Akaal Takht Jathedar is from a ‘low caste’ Same with recent ex-Chief Minister Channi. There have been quotas in place for many years to ensure ‘lower castes’ get many reserved political seats and (from my understanding) the same with senior Religious positions. Same for government jobs and university places in general. You have made a topic and points here which are quite inaccurate and misleading

  3. With the jat Sikhs making the majority in Punjab and having the most power . IE in terms of politics and also religiously. IE all major people controling and running the Gurdwaras being from this demographic. Should other castes be give some kind of quota for top jobs so we can have more equality and diversity in the Punjabi society and social strata. Or are they to power hungry and unable to share? I think that is the only way of achieving a strong United Punjab instead of one where there is to much in fighting and resentments.

  4. A professional online Sikhi based school. Question for parents with young kids: What it would take you to have your child enrolled in the online school on top of their regular school? What level of support do you need to get you and your kid to participate? Does cost matter? Does self-paced course/lesson better than Live programs? Question for general sangat: Should there be any tiers in the program - Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice Should it be Free of Cost or basic cost such as monthly fees to cover running cost? Should it be more focused on those community members who are not in touch with Sikhi (Not going to Gurdwara sahib regularly etc)? Would appreciate views & suggestions on the above ... Gurfateh

  5. How is this project going? @Sewadarji Daas is particularly interested in content. Is brand new content being created for this online school? Been thinking for a while, there’s a huge opportunity for a project which could ‘pull together’ some of the best digital resources available today and (most importantly) present it all on a user friendly platform. This is an interesting example to look at - https://p6academy.co.uk (still early stage being developed)

  8. I didn’t say there is no racism in the Uk or that there is no casteism in Panjab. I have family back home involved in politics so I have primary sources for my info as well. I think with all respect, you are the one ‘talking shyte’ here. Again, to address directly the main points of the original post of this thread, it’s not just jatts in high positions and there are already quotas. I agree casteism is a major obstacle for Ekta in the Panjabi Sikh community. But, for example, more qualified people from ‘higher castes’ (including Tarkhans I think) cannot get jobs or university places because they go to the ‘scheduled castes’ first .

  10. People think offering toy aeroplanes will "assure" them a visa! http://archive.indianexpress.com/news/aeroplane-gurdwara/998924/ Aeroplane Gurdwara Anju Agnihotri Chaba , Anju Agnihotri Chaba : New Delhi, Sat Sep 08 2012, 22:25 It's not difficult to locate Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara in Talhan village near Jalandhar on NH-1. Just ask for the "hawai jahaz gurdwara" or the "aeroplane gurdwara", and you'll be promptly guided to it... Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara, or the hawai jahaz gurdwara, is a ticket to the West; if you offer a toy aeroplane there as prasad, you can be "assured" of a visa. Or so, believe devotees who flock to the shrine with miniature aircraft as offerings, from across Punjab's Doaba region, which consists of Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr districts, and which has over six million of its natives settled abroad. It is believed that every family in Doaba has at least one member living overseas. The gate to Talhan village has a cement model of a British Airways aircraft sitting on top of it, and the road to Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara is lined with shops selling toy models of international carriers such as Lufthansa, British Airways, Air Canada, etc, priced between Rs 50 and Rs 550.

  12. I think there should be a free tier and also a paid tier for those that are more serious. IF it is all paid for, then many people will not bother. At the moment near me there is a Sunday punjabi school in Slough. However many parents will either not bother or will not know about this and other punjabi schools in the area. Some may not have the transport. Those lucky enough to get into the sikh schools don't need to go either. It would really be a good idea to somewhat collaborate with the sunday punjabi schools nationally, to sync with their syllabuses. Would also be nice to get the strength of the sikh schools as well.

  16. Another potential tip, that might sound nuts at first: I've noticed that many sociopaths/psychos seem to be uneasy around certain types of cats. By cats here, I mean a proper one that hasn't had their feral instincts completely stomped out of them, like an overweight house cat. People says it's because these people are uncomfortable with the independent nature of cats. I also think that cats might be more psychically intuned to auras and the sociopath can sense that they see through them. Yeah, I know, it sounds nuts. lol

  17. It's a shame that by time we've figured out these characteristics, we've already got stung. Narcissism or sociopathy were rarely discussed before, and just put down to a person's personality, but we've come a long way since then. There are clear signs your dealing with one of these in their behaviour and language. They don't seem to have the ability for deeper abstract concepts, and I think that's where you can identify them quickly. If you question them on a deeper level on these things (like spirituality, bonds etc.), you can clearly see them squirm, do avoidance behaviour or give out text book answers that they've learnt to hide their emotional emptiness. When they think they have hoodwinked you, you can see them beaming with their smiles. Someone unaware is likely to mistake the smile as friendliness, and not elation at having pulled the wool over your eyes. Problem with a lot of people is that they mistake the narcissist personality of potential partners as confidence (which people are understandably attracted too), this coupled with the fact that these people often work themselves into good economic positions through deception and manipulation make them seem like ideal partners. They glean information about a person and then use the profile they've created to manipulate them (i.e. figuring out soft spots). So all their flattery is personally tailored from what they've heard and observed about a person, they also adapt their own persona to make themselves as attractive to their target as much as possible; trying to make themselves indispensable. They are like amateur psychologists in this respect. They create a false image of themselves that is the polar opposite of what they are really like. Only people who live with them see their true nature. Outsiders to the relationship would never believe what they are really like, because they've manipulated them too with some false image. I also believe these types can sense each other, and often form alliances against people not like them. This explains a lot of higher management in organisations too. If it's too good to be true, it usually isn't true. Also, they have a reset button, so they can move on from the devastation they cause in people's lives, without a second thought, and find the next victim. When they do this, they'll make themselves out to be the victims of the person they abused in the previous relationship. When in a relationship, once they feel that they have constructed enough barriers to prevent the other partner leaving (financial, emotional, using cultural taboos, children etc.) from what I've seen, they seem to start testing the boundaries of just how much they can get away with - just how much they can break someone down to complete compliance. It's like they try and destroy the very soul and essence of the person. They try and make people completely dependent on them. From what you posted above, it looks like all these signs were there from the beginning with your sister.

  28. If the maryada propagated by Akal Takhat is that only Sikhs can have an Anand Karaj, and if Sonam Kapoor + fiance are willing to sign a piece of paper that says they believe (as in the definition of a Sikh) in Akal Purakh, 10 Gurus, their Bani, Guru Granth Sahib, and the Amrit of the 10th Guru, I would have no objection to their getting an Anand Karaj. If they're not willing to do that, then they can get married someplace else (mandir, court), and then do a Sukhmani Sahib paath + ardass at the Gurdwara.

  29. Ok lets reverse the relation , Daughter of some singh married into a Family of Hindu pandits ,but husband died , went to Pakistan and converted to islam. In that case would you have accepted her as Sikh? The fact is she is daughter in law of Granthi so most probably she converted to Sikhism at the time of marriage. Now when she got widowed with three kids she had hardly any personal life left. Moreover I don't think his father or Father in law thought of her re marriage.TBH there are hardly any sikh or Hindu men that marry a widow who is mother of three. So she may had found a Pakistani who was willing to accept her. Moreover she may had thought that she changed her religion for first marriage what's wrong if she did it for second time

  30. I used to believe this until I started managing my brother's matrimony profile a year ago who received lots of interest from girls who are looking for non trimmer , vegetarian and religious. My brother being less religious created more problem for him in finding life partner. The main factors that people see in India for marriage is how much a guy earn , how much property his family own and what the status of his family. If by any chance .If by any chance your these factors are on weak side then even super gursikh families won't consider you as rishta

  34. Football in India is quite popular and almost craze in states like Bengal. Goa Kerala etc West Bengal had established clubs of Football much older than cricket clubs. Cricket gained popularity in 70s and 80s when India started winning People need to accept fact that majority of Indians Don't have genetics or diet to play athletic sports. That's why India struggled to produce genuine fast bowlers in cricket as fast bowlers require athletic ability while you can be batsman or spinner even with poor fitness level. Bangladesh too now is cricket crazy after their team received success better than football Just look at this link you will be surprised to see so many foreign nationals playing in India football https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_foreign_football_players_in_India If there is no craze then who is paying these foreign nationals

  35. When I visited Gurdwara on Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday it was so crowded even in the evening , only difference was 80-90% people were non sikh.Gurdwara's are receiving attendence more than ever it is just people are no longer want to call themselves sikhs. It is because if you call yourself sikh then you have all the liabilities of sikhism but if you call yourself Gurdwara going Hindu or other then you have all the benefits of sikh plus no liabilities .So why people will want to take the addittional liabilities

  39. thing is parchaar in sikhi is different than other faiths I guess because we are not an empire building 'religion' counting heads we've collected along the way but , shared what truth and love we see in Sikhi and Gurbani , wishing others to experience that truth whether staying in their faith and japping naam, doing kirt and vand ke chakna or actually joining their soul brothers and sisters under Guru ji's shelter . We are invested body and soul in Guru ji but not in ego-trips that most missionaries/dawah men are... please bro i had this argument with a nasty Hindu teacher at GGSKCollege , she tried suggesting that my son was halfsikh and half other ....I slapped her idea down straight away , you either are Sikh or Not there is no halfway...besides we came to talk about his education not your mental prejudices

  40. Yeh, but outside cultures play a big part in people's thinking these days especially those raised in the diaspora. Then we have the VERY common problem of Sikh children growing up with unbelievably hypocritical parents - who outwardly practice Sikhi but become rigidly 'Panjabi' (in the worse sense) when it comes to inter-caste marriages and stuff like that. Parental hypocrisy isn't lost on the children and often make them ill disposed to their heritage. In today's climate I think being able to positively integrate the children of mixed-race, mixed-faith couples within the wider community will play a key component of our future survival. I know loads of half-Sikh, half xxx kids now, and this number is only set to increase. We should have things in place to deal with it. Bring them home so to speak. I know this will be majorly problematic with half sullay kids though. I don't believe the highlighted bit is true at all. Historically, our Gurus went all over the place to preach Sikhi. We've had all sorts of parcharaks historically, from the manji system, masands, Udasis etc. I think this idea of Sikhs not converting only emerged post-annexation for some reason, and even then the Singh Sabha lehar weren't averse to conversions themselves.

  42. http://punjabnewsline.com/content/punjab-has-improved-sex-ratio-chawla/29973 Punjab has an improved sex-ratio : Chawla Punjab Newsline Network Friday, 01 April 2011 CHANDIGARH: Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Prof. Laxmi Kanta Chawla here Friday expressed hope that the sex-ratio of Punjab would improve further. She said although as per the preliminary report of census 2011 Punjab has witnessed an improvement in the sex-ratio as the current figure rose to 846 in 2011 from the 798 as per census 2001.We have definitely achieved some success, but still there is much more that needed to be done in this area. She stated that her department and the official entrusted the job to implement PNDT Act are undoubtedly doing their best, yet some thing that plays a deterrent, is the negative interference by the people who are in power, Prof. Chawla said. Many times in the past when the health officials are sincerely doing their duty to check the menace of female foeticide powerful politicians and representatives of social organizations come forward to rescue the miscreants. Not only this even the local politicians also put a lot of pressure upon the health officials to let the violators of PC-PNDT act go Scot free. While further talking about the phenomena behind the sex-ratio nationally, the Health Minister clarified that the trend of more males prevails universally. Punjab has however witnessed the worst scenario during the decade of 80's when the misuse of new technology task of at a large scale. Thereafter the sex-ratio in the state had started dropping and in year 2001, it come down to a low of 798 girls behind every 1000 boys. However owing to concerted efforts of the department, some success has been achieved in checking this reverse trend. Further improvement of 48 points has been witnessed as per the 2011 census report. While strongly criticizing the prevailing mindset of some persons in power, Chawla urged them to not to make attempts to bail out, people who indulge in evils like female foeticide. They must instead support the officials who are fighting for the cause of girl child. Prof. Chawla further made an earnest appeal to the people to come forward and become the genuine volunteers for the cause of girls. She also appealed people to foot a resistance to such lobbies that support the violators of PNDT Act.

My bhua just told me of a case where she met a bibi who was in tears that her daughter is 27 and there are no good rishta's for her.She said people come and say that they don't want anything but then they look at house and realise that the family is not rich and then they just don't reply back. so one cannot say that dowry is demand from a less fortunate family because then people will not even go to less fortunate families for having a Rishta
