Personally most families have holidays during christmas, so its a chance for families meeting and giving dabba of chocolates. Idon't think anyone celebrates christmas because of jesus. Same goes for divali, people just celebrate because families get together and enjoy themselves. Its more formality!!!

read the 11 pages, and you'll see, only few have shown that interest. And formality is one of the problems. How is that celebrating christmas if is not becasue of jesus, well then thats not called christmas. lol.

Its all good to respect other's traditions and all. But we got plenty of our own holidays and gurpurabs that we honestly aren't celebrating and need to start there first.

my point is that we go around and say oh "merry christmas" to everyone we meet, and we have a good time because its christmas right? Then when we go to gurudwara, or out in public, were afarid to even say fateh! "

This is really true. Its a problem in brown people. For instance when you see someone talking on TV in an Indian accent then all the Indians laugh etc...but the spanish don't laugh when someone talks in a spanish accent. There are other little things I noticed and it makes me think that brown ppl are prejudiced to their own kind. Its as if they are always thinking about what the white ppl will think and there is this semi licking white ppl thing going on. Its kinda really annoying but ah well u just hope that they will grow up one day.

Well, I'm a "white Sikh," and if it makes you feel any better, I've got plenty of OG Punjabi sardars in my sangat who hate on me for what I am. People shouldn't be that way, or either way, but it's the truth. Sunday in langar one of the young boys, just in a bandanna, called one of the other young heads "Osama bin Laden," just because he was keeping his kesh and wearing a patka. That's messed up right there -- how many hundreds of years were spent and hundreds of thousands of lives were lost attempting to preserve Sikhi before the moghuls and others?

And, oh yeah, I got Christmas issues, too, but I'll get to them in another thread.

okay... as tempted as i am to put another line out of a christmas carol in here.. i won't...

to those who are so 'anti-christmas'... ask urself why? what is it about these holidays that ur so against?

personally... i'm grateful there's so many holidays -sikh and non-sikh holidays alike - throughout the year... why? because this allows me to spend more time with my family i.e. my sangat... because of so many long weekends such as 'thanksgivings day', 'memorial day', 'canada day' etc... etc... i'm able to spend a lot more time with my sadh sangat and attend more samagamz.. these extra 1 or 2 days on the weekend make it possible for more sangataa to come out and get some lahaa from our samagamz...

aren't we then celebrating this holidays in our own way??

for ex... xmas holidays.. my company gives days off on xmas and boxing day, and new years and for those who celebrate it, hannukah etc... some people get the whole week off n what nah... buh i'm grateful for that because every year there is a week long december samagam in toronto that i'm able to attend... i's cuz of these holidays that i'm able to attend more of the samagam then i normally wud... which allows me to get as much outta the samagam as i can...

i highly doubt anybody here is complainin bout gettin days off for xmas, or thanksgiving or any other (non-sikh) holiday y'all might have durin the year... isn't that then a double standard?? u dun agree wit the holiday, however, ur more then happy to take the benefits of gettin work or school off...

i personally don't celebrate holidays how they're "meant" to be celebrated (i.e. no xmas tree on xmas, no turkey on thanksgiving etc...) buh in the case of xmas.. i DO buy presents for the younger peepz in the family... the lil couzinz n wha nah... and yeah, i's jus an excuse to buy presents n wha nah, buh who cares? they get so much joy... they're lil kids.. it wud be heartbreakin for them to go to school the next day n everybody talkin bout all the xmas presents they got, n our 'sikh' kids sayin 'we don't celebrate.. i din get any presents'..

--Ok, when you click on a thread, try reading some of the responces before posting comments like that, becasue that tells me you didnt read anything. Show me where anybody has anything agaisnt Christmans as a holiday, besideds the fact it has nothing do with sikhy???

Wouldnt it have been heartbreaking for Guru Gobind Singh ji to see others young kids going to school, and growing up and seeing them suceed in life? Wouldnt guru ji want to see his kids do the same? Wouldnt Guru ji get heartbroken cause his sons, at such a young age, gave up everything including their lives for Khalsa Panth?

--You say that if kids dont get presents that would be heartbreaking to see? We have seen nothing heartbreaking in our lifes. We make excuses to do things that we want, which dont bring us anything in life. And not getting presents is part of those excuses.

How is that being ignorant?

Sacrifice is a big big part of being Sikh. And many people dont understand the concept of sacrifice.
