  1. According to science those who wake up early have less stress hormones secreted in their system. But forget everything else, just follow it because its Guru Sahib's Hukam. There are tons of scientific logics to justify Amritvela, but a GurSikh's sole logic is SatGuru Patshah jee's bachans.

  2. Death will touch us one day, so I personally wouldn't view Amritvela as a method of becoming immortal. Just do it because, as brother Mehtab Singh said, bachans were given to us.

  5. Yeah, I loved the rambo series so much, especially the 1st one, whenever I remember the 1st part (first blood) I always thought that's how a Singh should be if a Pangaa ever happens.

  6. First and TOPmost priority of the Sikhs should be to learn modern warfare. Every Sikh should be like a commando. I think if ever $hit hits the fan, a Sikh should be able to react like rambo in first blood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL_6l8AyrmE

  7. I keep hearing people say stuff like, "do paath and remember vaheguru, and vaheguru will give you anything you want" When I used to go to the gurdwara, as an example, I used to think, "Please vaheguru, let me do well in school, on my exams. If I do well, I'll become a better person blah blah" Basically I was always asking for things. Over time I started realizing that its kinda greedy/selfish of me to always be asking for things. As I got older, the only thing I really think to myself is being thankful for everything I have. And that theres people out there who have much worse situations than me. So instead of asking vaheguru to help me do well on exams or whatever else I have to do, I started being thankful that I have the opportunity to go to school, and everything else that I have.(Just an example) Anyways, this was just a random thought in my head, something that I realized over years. Just curious what other people's thoughts are.

  8. I agree with Prabhjot Singh that everyone makes mistake and bhai jaswinder singh probably forgot to put full attention to his duties because of being in rush etc. However, looking at his past history since he took the sewa of head granthi, I would say that it was his third strike and from internal sources, I know bhai sahib is very proud of having very close relation with badal and thinks of himself as untouchable by sgpc and co. Having such close relation is probably the reason why bhai sahib still got a good job even after being demoted. His first strike was when he did bhangra while holding sri sahib and wearing singh sahib dress and participated in other non-sikhi stuff (haldi, throwing money) at his bhanja's pre-wedding program. Second strike was when he was en route to attend some function locally, his car hit a person on scooter and he looked out and since he was in hurry/late so he left the scene. While coming after program, relatives of scooter person (who died) stopped his car with police beacon and protested. Sangat called him twice to resign before chaupai sahib incident and he always reply in harsh tone acting that he is untoubable. I am not against bhai sahib but looking at three strikes in the past, I think it is good decision by SGPC to demote him; even though I don't think he is capable of doing granthi singh sewa but I respect the decision.

  10. This is a grave issue. Gurdwara matrimonials need to be monitored, there is a lot of hate being spread against turbans from female sikhs sections in many gurdwaras around West London, and possibly others as well. Please keep a vigilant eye, we cannot let this hate happen in sacred Gurdwaras. Gurdwara is not the place for turban to be disrespected, why are we letting this happen on such a large scale? Gurdwara is about peace and love, and also we need to promote this respect for turban among punjabis and beyond. How is there so much hate for turban in gurdwara lists? This will really really badly effect preserving the turban in our community if we don;t do something, anything! This is beadbi to the grandest scale!

Something which will give me a deeper knowledge of Gurbanee, but is simple to understand. I'm having a lot of trouble finding things. I want to start reading Sikhi books to expand my knowledge but I just don't know where to even start, I really just need a starting point. As I'm new to this I was hoping the sangat could give me some recommendations Thankyou all in advance, I hope you can help this moorakh sister of yours get her life on the right path again. 15. Gurfateh, My local Gurdwara are seeking to start up classes for Children’s self defence/martial arts and are looking for instructors who will act as role models first i.e. Gursikhs with the martial arts aspect following on. We believe having an amritdhari instructor will give the kids a role model to look up to and aspire to. The intention being that they will learn sikhi principles along with the self confidence not only to look after themselves and others but also the confidence in the sikhi saroop. We are looking for recommendations of such gursikhs in and around the Birmingham area, so Wolverhampton, Walsall etc are all within easy commute. I would appreciate your help and assistance. Bhul chuk marf.

  16. Just found this passage in a version of Bhangu's Prachin Panth Prakash, obtained from the net. Can anyone please clarify on this? Writing about the happening at Machhiwara (‘… accepted after purifying with the all steel dagger) "Quatrain: When the True Guru went further, he reached near Machhiwara. After settling the True Guru, the Pathan went and brought along Gulaba the Khatri.1 Couplet: Listen to the story of Machhiwara of how the Guru stayed at the house of a Khattri and of how the Sayyad Pathans served him by carrying him on their heads.2 Quatrain: He served some food. The Guru ate while remembering (God). At sunset he brought him inside. The mansion became his abode.3 One or two Singhs walked to the place. The Guru ordered them to conceal themselves. One day the Guru ordered a goat. He had it slaughtered by the Singhs. As the True Guru ate meat, bones were thrown into the house of the Turk. On seeing the bones the Turk remonstrated and abused the Khattri, ‘you throw bones into my house!’5 Couplet: Then the Khattri approached the True Guru saying, ‘ I am an extremely weak person. I will be killed should the Turk comes to know.’6 Quatrain: The True Guru threw money. The Qazi took the bribe and kept quiet. Like this the Guru stayed here for ten days and then desired to march on.7" Did the Guru really eat meat? Whose this Khatri Bhangu speaks off and I have never heard of maharaj bribing a Qazi.

  17. This is one of the most annoying things, jatts will say, "we don't think we are superior, we are just proud of who we are and our ancestors, and acknowledge that there are differences" and then they will proceed to list off ways they are superior and how others are inferior. Non-jatts will say, "jatts think they are better than us, they are arrogant, its their fault that that the caste divide will never end" It seems as if both sides equally discriminate the other. I went to a wedding of a Tarkhan man a few months ago, they had assigned seating based on "friends", when you walked in and sat down, you noticed that everyone of the same caste was seated together, in different parts of the hall. I didn't know anyone at my table, and my friends were on different tables. I also know a few parents who don't want their kids doing bhangra because "eh jattan da kam ah". At the same time, i know alot of jatts that will purposely blast jatt-pride songs infront of non-jatts, they'll treat them differently, and they will make fun of them non-stop behind their backs, "bhapey this and that" And I've heard countless times that "I'm going to marry in my caste, I don't even consider anyone else, its just how it is" I know this probably gets talked about alot, but I just get really sick of hearing all these things, I just had to vent this out. I understand how alot of people believe what they believe, but its especially annoying when I see sardar's with full dharhi's who are supposed to represent our religion and what we believe, who can tell me anything detail from sikh history that I want to know off the top of their head, who can translate random lines of gurbani for me.....discriminate against one another just based on caste. It doesn't make any sense to me.

  21. To be honest I'm undecided as to whether you are genuine or not. Recently there have been a few similar threads in this section where rather than seek professional help like approaching a doctor, individuals expect some Divine solution through Gurbani or Shabads as if they are mantras for certain solutions like this? Currently I have a prolonged illness which causes crippling daily pain, but which will eventually be sorted out by my surgeon. In the meantime reading more Gurbani is comforting for me and genuinely removes my pain in those moments when I do recitations. My Guru is my comfort blanket, just like a small child seeking comfort in the embrace of its mother. But you should not expect more beyond that - your solution lies elsewhere as has been pointed out by others - get over yourself and see your doctor. The fact is its not just a once in while night emission that some pubescent boys have. What you are saying is not normal and is not common. You say that you actually remove several knots in your sleep so that you then commit onanistic acts. Either you are quite pre-meditated and thus delusional that this just so happens in your sleep and are seeking some redemtion from this site, or you have have a rare sleep disorder. So please pluck up (or rather man-up) some courage and see your doctor. I just hope you have not come on here to make up some kur-kahani and then getting some wierd kick out of the responces.

  23. Anmol bread had nothing to do with the Mughals. The Punjabi were fond of arabi, persian and turkoman horses. Local mares would be covered by these. Today it is all marwari stallions with the odd Sindhi being used to cover mares so the arabi and other influences have been bred out of Punabi horses. Its not really about the cost its about fashion. There are plenty of good thoroughbreds to be had at low prices in Punjab but they all want marwari (because of the ears). Sukhbir Badals Raj-Hans is a great looking stallion. He also used to have a draft horse imported from Ireland as well as some miniature ponies. There are plenty of good horses in Punjab. You just have to know where to find them. If you are in the loop then you can spend weeks visiting stud farms in Punjab and seeing well bred horses. If you are going to ask you chacha in Jalandhar to show you a horse then you will see a cart horse!!

  26. I noticed back in Punjab that horse riding in some villages is regaining popularity and its now even started to become a craze to give a nukra horse as a gift to the son-in-law on the occassion of marriage (whether he knows what to do with it or not). However quality of horses remain poor. Looking at European artists who captured the Sikhs from the days of Ranjit Singh, the horses we used to keep were similar phenotypically to Arabs. Apparently in the earlier Misldari period, Sardars would raid Mughal, Persian and Afghan camps and take the best horses. The Mughals used to breed the famous Anmol breed in the Punjab and I think this is now extinct. Some good examples of native horses that I have seen at melas in Punjab are from the Marwari breed - but again pure breeds are rare. I once saw the Marwari stallion kept by Sukhbir Badal who apparently is a good rider and its a fine beast of the breed - one if the most beautiful examples I've ever seen. At these melas farmers that I've spoken to say its a hobby for them and some breed to sell on. But no one said they had the means to go for top breeds, saying it was due to the costs. When you mention our history and hertitage to them, they all go on about how for those times that was fair enough, but these days its a Land Cruiser that's what the man with that sort of money wants - not a fancy steed. Its a shame.

  33. At the4 moment i am listening to Sukhmani Sahib katha by Giani Gurbachan Singh JI Khalsa. The first mp3 files discusses this topic, Baba Ji states that the 5th master requested Sri Chand to write towards Guru Granth Sahib but Sri Chand declined out of humility. However, upon the insistance of the 5th Satguru, Sti Chand repeated his fathers words from the mool mantra. To suggest Gurbani got stuck is the most disrespectful thing you can say about our Satguru's. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji were God himself taking the form of human body (the bhatts clearly state this), to suggest Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji has not the ability to complete Gurbani and that it has become stuck is a complete contrast to the Satguru's limitless shakti.

  34. If assurances by Nepalese Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to Dubai-based businessman Surinderpal Singh Oberoi at a meeting in Katmandu yesterday are any indication, the historic Gurdwara Nanak Math will soon become operational in a new building. Guru Nanak Math, on the banks of the Vishnu Mati river, is a part of the 200-acres of land donated by the King of Nepal, Jaya Prakash Malla, to Guru Nanak Dev, founder of Sikhism, during his month-long stay in Kathmandu in 1516. Though most of the land, registered in the name of Guru Nanak Dev, has been developed for commercial and residential purposes, a piece of five acres still remains in possession of the gurdwara run by a mahant. The immediate need is to post a granthi (priest) there and restore Rehat Maryada. "There are three volumes of Guru Granth Sahib at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Math. One of is handwritten and has 1,565 aangs (pages). It is in good shape," claims Oberoi. Accompanied by Indian Ambassador to Nepal Jayant Prasad, Oberoi told Dr Baburam Bhattarai, an alumnus of the Chandigarh College of Architecture, about the historic Guru Nanak Math. He carried with him the relevant documents, including the original land transfer and registration deed with signatures of crown prince Jaya Jagat Malla as witness. Oberoi told the Nepalese Prime Minister of plans for a new gurdwara building, a langar hall and a 100-room serai that would be run by a committee with a nominee from the Nepalese Government besides representatives of the Sikh community from Nepal and outside. The Nepalese Prime Minister reportedly assured Oberoi and Jayant Prasad that the Nepalese Government would do whatever required to stop the auction/allotment of land that belonged to the Sikh shrine. The Nepalese Government had given a public notice for auctioning the Sikh shrine land last month before Oberoi and Pritam Singh, president of the Gurdwara Management Committee of Nepal, moved the Supreme Court in Kathmandu and got an interim injunction. The n ext date of hearing is December 8. There are three gurdwaras in Nepal, all in Kathmandu and run by mahants, mostly from Varanasi or Punjab. But the Sikh Rehat Maryada is not being followed in any of the Sikh shrines. For Oberoi, the discovery of the shrine during his visit to Nepal, to oversee the formation of Nepalese Gatka Federation, was accidental. "At one of the gurdwaras is a well with hymns in Gurmukhi inscribed on its walls. We have started work on cleaning the well and restoring this historic monument to its original shape," said Oberoi, who is also managing trustee of the Sarbat Da Bhala Trust that has been working for the release of several Indian youths languishing in various UAE jails. Guru Nanak Dev is believed to have visited Kathmandu in 1516 AD. The gurdwara was earlier known as Charbaksh Sthan, Sangat Bari and Sankha Bari and Guru. Oberoi took up the matter the Union Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur who evinced a keen interest in the restoration of the gurdwara. She spoke with the Indian Ambassador. About the shrine... Guru Nanak Math is on the banks of the Vishnu Mati river It is a part of the 200-acres of land donated by the King of Nepal, Jaya Prakash Malla, to Guru Nanak during his visit to Kathmandu in 1516 Most of the land, registered in the name of Guru Nanak Dev, has been developed for commercial and residential purposes But a piece of land measuring five acres remains in possession of the gurdwara run by a mahant

  35. He did praise Indira Gandhi for carrying out attack on the heart of Sikhi in June 1984. At the same time, its also true that the Shiv Sainiks did offer protection/security to Sikhs in November 1984. This I know from a Gursikh friend of mine from Mumbai who was old enough in 1984 when it happened. But it was all political. Thackeray wanted to show his power, he wanted to show how Mumbai was better/safer than Delhi, and he wanted to show he was NOT anti-Sikhs the way Congress was. Just yesterday I saw on NDTV that it was in 1984 when BJP and Shiv Sena came together as political allies. Ask why. Answer is because Congress had a huge wave of Hindu sympathy towards Rajiv after his mother was killed, and these Sangh stooges HAD TO come together to ensure the non-Hindu (especially Sikh) vote bank. Also, in 1993 when Mumbai was burning in riots, these Shiv Sainiks were offering protection to the rich Bohri Gujarati Muslims and were paid well to do so. Again, this is a personal account of my Muslim flatmate from college who was in his teens in Mumbai when the 1993 riots happened. Bottom line, whatever "good" or "bad" these guys do, its got nothing to do with religion or culture or ethics. Its all about power and/or money, period. Whatever rocks their boat to get them power/money, they'll do it. If they offered security to Sikhs back then, well, good job. Maybe it satisfied their political interests back then to do so. What they did after that is equally worth condemning.

  39. Waheguru Jeo, I was in the Parikarma of Sri Darbar Sahib when this incident took place. Gyaani Ji got a bit late in reaching Sachkhand for some reason, as there were only 5 or so minutes left for Rehraas Sahib. He was literally running towards Sachkhand so that he could begin his seva on time, which he eventually did, but I guess this haste must've confused him a little bit, hence the incident, but its something we all go through every now and then, don't we? And he even apologised to Sri GuruJi and smooh Sangat by reciting two shabads of maafi and nimarta before taking Hukamnaama Sahib, one could feel the pain in his voice as he read out those shabads. If Gyaani Ji were related to us by blood, we would forgive and forget this minor incident instead of publicising it all over the world and making fun of him, would we not? Maharaj are beant beant beant beant beant kripalu, and so is His Love and Compassion for his beloved Sikhs, so pleas a benti in your lotus feet jeo, let's put mitti on this incident, hug him and move on. As far as the violation of Maryada is concerned, its a matter between Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Gyaani Ji, and whatever decision that comes from Sri Hargobind Sahib Ji Maharaj's place would be pravaan to both Gyaani Ji and Panth. Jeh Prasaad Tere Sagal Chiddr Dhaakai... Maafi, and Dhanvaad jeo, Gurfateh

I've hi-lighted the important points if someone doesn't want to read it all! http://www.sikh24.com/2012/10/oped-attack-on-general-brar-what-were-the-real-motives/#.UGpSPphyWSo Europe, India, Op/Ed, WORLD | October 1, 2012, 10:21 pm Op/Ed – Attack on General Brar: What Were the Real Motives? By: Guest Columnist Bhai Bittu & Bhai Barapind A week ago, both the President and former President of the Sikh political party, Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) were charged with waging war on the State, possession of explosives and sedition. Bhai Kulbir Singh Barapind and Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu were originally arrested under preventative measures, but have since seen their charges exacerbated and have been placed in judicial custody for a period of 14 days. The former is a serving member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) – notably the only candidate to successfully defeat a (CM of Punjab) Badal-supported nominee in recent SGPC elections in the Doaba region – whilst under the leadership of Daljit Singh Bittu, the Akali Dal (Panch Pardhani) has continued to gain support as a political party. It is no secret that the arrests have been to the benefit of the Badal-led Punjab Govt. and the wider Sikh hierarchy in Punjab, including the President of the SGPC, Avtar Singh Makkar who upheld that the Police were correct to make the arrests, despite human rights groups and media outlets confirming that no evidence of banned paraphernalia or explosives have been found. But more worryingly, each passing day with the surfacing of new and unrelated revelations, it has begun to appear that there may be a wider plot unfolding to silence any opposition to the status quo of recent years that has seen the Punjab, and Sikh institutions there, denigrated ever closer to oblivion. John Baird Almost a month ago now, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird made sensational remarks suggesting that extremism and radicalisation was on the rise amidst Sikhs in Canada. His comments were widely rebuked throughout the country, but in the light of recent events, appear to merely be an opening shot across the bow of the Sikh World. Many in the Diaspora have been campaigning for greater transparency within Sikh institutions in the Punjab and have questioned the unhealthy influence of the Badal-led, supposed Sikh political party, the Shiromani Akali Dal, over the SGPC specifically. This has not been met with great welcome and clear attempts to marginalise the Sikh voice abroad have been filtering through Punjabi/Sikh media over the past year. Baird’s remarks were a pronounced escalation of this strategy. General Kuldeep Brar However, today’s news of the alleged attack on retired Lt. General Kuldip Brar who led the 1984 invasion of Sri Darbar Sahib Amritsar, is even more puzzling and timely. Indian media began to report late this afternoon, that Gen. Brar and his wife who are ordinarily under constant protection in Mumbai, were attacked last night in London, where the retired General suffered wounds to his neck. Depending on which Indian media outlet you believe, he was attacked either outside his hotel or on Oxford Street at around 10:30pm, although we ascertained from the Metropolitan Police that the attack took place on Old Quebec Street, a stone’s throw from Marble Arch tube station. The original source issuing the news is the High Commission of India which reports that Brar was in a critical condition in hospital overnight but has now been released and is recovering in private. The Metropolitan Police newswire reported Brar’s wounds as serious but not critical and that he had indeed been released from hospital after an overnight stay. His wife is quoted by Indian media as saying that they were set upon by four individuals whom she cannot identify. Despite what seems to be an apparent knife attack near the most popular street and area of the capital city, no press statement was issued last night or indeed this morning, but when issued were littered with references to the rise of Sikh extremism. Any native to central London will know that the slightest hint of an incident in Soho or Mayfair results in an instant cordoning-off of the area, which incidentally has one of the highest numbers of surveillance cameras in Western Europe, not to mention pedestrian foot-fall, so one would hope that the Metropolitan Police will have access to sufficient evidence to get to the heart of the matter. At this time, they are reporting no arrests although inquiries continue. It is remarkable to think that in this day and age, this news story is being published by both the Indian press, the bewildering Sikh TV stations and now the BBC with most of the news article leading on the fact that General Brar has long been a target for ‘Sikh extremists’. It is remarkable of course, unless seen in the wider context of what has been happening in a post-Rajoana World. Clearly the Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal and their sibling forces hell-bent on usurping the Sikh people and vanquishing Guru Nanak’s egalitarian concept of Halemi Raj, have been so stunned by the global support to ‘Pledge Orange’ last Spring that they have moved rapidly to diminish the movement and what they see as the clearest threat to their autonomy over the Punjab and Sikh institutions. Opposition voices are no longer slowly being drowned out, rather they are erratically being routed through a multi-faceted campaign being played out primarily in the media. My gravest concern however remains for the everyday Sikh people who remain sightless to the situation. What will it take for our people to awake and realise what is being perpetrated against us? Must a well-known Sikh born and raised in the West be killed in dubious circumstances or face false charges before we care? Are the lives of the likes of Bhai Kulbir Singh Barapind and Bhai Daljit Singh Bittu not worthy of our time, for us to pause from our daily lives and think seriously and critically about what we as a people are doing? Rallies come and go, protests here then there, and TV shows galore, but all the while we fail to see through the looking glass, where white is black and black is white; all the while we fail to make a change for good, for now and ever more.
