  1. Last night I attended an interfaith gathering at the Trinity Church in Boston where people had come to show solidarity and support to the Sikh community following the unfortunate shooting spree at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin which claimed 6 innocent lives. Keertanis from the 4 Sikh Gurdwaras in Massachusetts sang based on the Gurmat Sangeet tradition. Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders spoke in support of religious liberty for all. In solidarity with the Sikh community, everyone who came covered their head when entering the sanctuary as is customary to cover one’s head while entering a holy space as a mark of respect and a norm in several eastern traditions. In the end, the entire multi-religious congregation enjoyed the Guru Ka Langar that followed. Services were offered by all 4 Gurdwaras in Massachusetts, namely the Gurdwara Sahib in Milford (a.k.a New England Sikh Study Circle), Guru Ram Das Ashram and Gurdwara in Millis, Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar in Medford, and the Sikh Sangat Society of Boston in Everett. The event was jointly hosted by the Islamic Council of New England, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Boston and the Massachusetts Council of Churches. Ok, the above was copy-pasted-edited by me. Now for my comments. Once again I feel blessed to be a part of this historic event that very rare people get a chance to be part of in their lifetime. The teachings of the Sikh Gurus where they called this entire human race as one family, and the Divine Creator as the Eternal Father of every human being finally came true before me. There was not a single person in whose eyes I did not see love. There was not a single word said which reflected anything else besides compassion. Every face smiled and every smile shone, every eye glittered, every soul basked in the divine glory which is talked about throughout the Sri Guru Granth Sahib jee. I cannot thank Vaheguru enough for blessing me with this soul-stirring, this soul-uplifting experience. Indeed, I can feel a lot of negativity shattered inside my head, and somewhere deep down beneath the depths of my soul, I can infact feel the essence of something new, something refreshing, something I don't remember feeling ever before. Truly it has to be some sort of God-realization, because I am telling you, in all those faces that smiled, in all those eyes that glittered, in all those sweet words uttered, I somehow managed to see through it all and realize it was HIM hidden in the midst of it all, showering HIS Grace on everyone and through everyone. All those who came, they were ALL the most dearest people of the One Ever-Loving Divine Creator Lord, because it was through ALL of them that HIS endless Love flooded upon the soul of ALL those they met! 3. You aren't a Nihang based on what kind you classify yourself as, but by the actions you do. True Sant Sipahi and Akali. Just like his forefathers like Baba Hanuman Singh ji , Baba Deep Singh ji, Akali Phoola Singh ji and the list goes on. Baba Jarnail ji SIngh Khalsa Bhindranwale:

  4. It's already started..."apparantly" Baba Santa Singh was not against the Dharam Yudh Morcha and openly supported it. This is what Nihangs in UK have started saying. It's quite ironic that these same guys used to swear at Sant Jee but now they're jumping on the bandwaggon with their agenda is mind. I personally have seen this change since the Sikh Channels became more pro-1984 and particularly since the Bhai Rajoana issue. Before Bhai Rajoana issue, most mone were against or didn't understand why 1984 happened and therefore had a dislike of Sant Jee. But after, that's changed alot of mone who now see the injustices Sikhs face, even lot of Communists have changed their views since then. So, now these guys in UK are trying to cash in on it all. I've started hearing so many made up stories that try to glorify Baba Santa Singh's "positive" role in the Dharam Yudh Morcha - it's just laughable! On a side note, i bow out of respect for Baba Hanuman Singh Jee's shaheedi! I just can't stand these fake Nihangs today who make up stories re-Dharam Yudh Morcha to glorify Baba Santa Singh!

  5. Just the name Shaheedi Degh alone would suggest that it should only be taken strictly in Yudh(Battlefield) !!! Who is fighting in a battle these days ???????? If anyone is going to fight for the kaum i could maybe understand but currently It is just used as an excuse to get high !!!

  7. Multifaith? The Indian Workers Association is a communist organisation that hates the Sikhs as does the Congress. Its like the Naizis holding a meeting at a Jewish hall I can't believe you are defending the organisations responsible for the 1984 massacre of Sikhs.

  8. Priceless, Divine Diamonds - XII Sriman Sant Isher Singh Ji Maharaj Rara Sahib Wale 66. Fifteen ways of strengthening Faith There are fifteen proven ways of strenghtening Faith and improving understanding of the true Self, as told by Sri Shankrachārya Jī. They are expounded upon as follows: Yam (ਯਮ) — Everything is Brahm - A constant awareness of this eternal truth brings one's organs of action and senses under control. This is called Yam. Nem (ਨੇਮ) — Nem is the never-ending realisation that the whole universe and everything in it is nothing but the Absolute, that there is no duality anywhere. Tyāg (ਤਿਆਗ) — Renunciation of worldly perceptions and profound contemplation (abhyās) on the Absolute is true renunciation. Maun (ਮੌਨ) — Self (Atmā) is, by its very nature, without any modifications. This realisation is called true Maun. Ekānt (ਇਕਾਂਤ) — Self is devoid of objective world, It simply is. This is true solitude. ShubKāl (ਸ਼ੁਭਕਾਲ) — The Absolute is inseparable from its creation. This is known as ShubKāl. Ãsan (ਆਸਨ) — The self is present inside, outside and in the centre of everything. This is true Ãsan. Mūlbhandha (ਮੂਲਬੰਧ) — The primal cause behind creation of this world is the Self. This realisation is called Mūlbhandha. Samāntā (ਸਮਾਨਤਾ) — To consider profound contemplation as representation of the Absolute and to merge it in the Supreme Spirit is true Samānta. Drishtī (ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ) — To see everything in this universe as the Absolute is true Drishtī. Prāṇāyāma (ਪ੍ਰਾਣਾਯਾਮ) — Any modification of the mind is nothing but another form of the Absolute - This fixity is Prāṇāyāma. Prati'āhāra (ਪ੍ਰਤਿਆਹਾਰ) — Even the five vices of the sense organs are forms of Absolute. This is Prati'āhāra. Dhārna (ਧਾਰਨਾ) — Anything that mind see, thinks and contemplates is nothing else but the Absolute. This is called Dhārna. Dhayān (ਧਿਆਨ) — Everything is All-complete Supreme Spirit. This is called Dhayān. Samādhī (ਸਮਾਧੀ) — When the worldly perception drops, vision of the Absolute take its position. This is true Samādhī. Profound contemplation (Abhayās) of above points rapidly brings about fixity on the Supreme Spirit. Hence, it is necessary to drop all family attachments, respect, fame, and laxity in order to achieve liberation while being in physical body, and ultimate merge in the infinite ocean of Supreme Bliss. 67. Untitled Question: Why is that even those who have realised the Self still appear to undergo physical suffering? Answer: The illusory appearence of objective world is because of ignorance (Avidya). For instance, in darkness a piece of rope appears to be snake. The instant darkness disappears, the mistake is realised and true nature of the rope becomes apparent. Similarly, when the veil of ignorance is lifted, a profound realisation takes place and the only reality that exists then is the Absolute, and nothing else. Ignorance is of two types: Mūl Avidya, and Lesha (or Tula) Avidya. Mūl Avidya is the primal ignorance that causes repetitive cycle of birth and death. It is destroyed the instant one comes under the sanctuary of Sri Guruji, and with it ends the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. What is left behind is the physical body, which will undergo changes in accordance with one's prarbadha (the set of past actions that have to be dispensed with in this lifetime). This is because of Lesha Avidya; it is what makes wise ones do acts of compassion. Deep down in their mind, however, they are fully aware of the fact that this duality is only confined to the physical body, and that the Self (Atma) is completely untouched by all this, and remains established in Itself. 68. Jnāni (the Liberated one) ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੯ ॥ Sorath 9th Guru. The man, who in pain, feels not pain, who is affected not by pleasure, love and fear and deems gold as dust. Pause. He who is swayed not by slander or, praise and who suffers not from greed, worldly love or pride, and who remains unaffected by joy or sorrow and who cares not about honour or dishonour; and he who renounces all hope and yearning, remains desire-free in the world, and whom lust and wrath touch not, within his mind abides the Lord. The man, who is blessed with the grace of the Guru, understands, he, the way to this. He, O Nanak, blends with the World-Lord, as water mingles with water. (Sri Ang 633, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj) Liberated is one for whom three physical states - Waking (Jagrati), Dreaming (svapan), and Deep sleep (Sushuptī) are the same. Waves of ocean originate, last for some time, and then disappear. These states are nothing but different forms of the same ocean. Similarly, the Self takes on the form of the mind, and waking and dreaming states are its two amusements. Everything that happens during these two states is only omnipresent Supreme Self's play. Therefore, waking, dreaming, and deep sleep states are nothing but the Non-Dualistic, formless Self that is beyond any modifications. 69. State of the world The perception of objective world is because of ignorance. Ignorance is what creates and sustains our world. When ignorance ends, the idea of space, time, objects and mind, all disappear and there is total absence of all perception. Ignorance, Ishwar's play, māyā and lack of knowledge have more or less the same meaning. This play of Ishwar possesses immense power. In an instant, it creates illusion in the form of space, time, objects and sense organs, and in the next instant, all these disappear, only to be replaced by some totally different perception. This happens in the physical states of waking and dreaming, and this play is famously known as the "world". This world play is fashioned like the mimicry of a buffoon. For a moment and trice one sees the show but it takes no time in disappearing. When the magician beats his tembourine, the whole public turn up to see the play. When the magician winds up his play, then all alone he enjoys his revelments. Man only stays four days (short time) in this pasture-land, and he revels and sports in utter darkness. Like mumbling in the night's dream, the jugglers have left the world, after staging their play. (Sri Ang 1023, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj) 70. Essence of Gurbani and Vedānta The essence of (Advait) Vedānta is that the Absolute only was, is and will be. Nothing else has the potential of existing outside of the Absolute. Gurbani also stresses on the same thing - ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਹੈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥ Everything is the Lord everything is the Lord. There is nothing but God, the world -sustainer. (Sri Ang 485, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj) If there is anything that appears separate from Gobind, it is mind, duality, ignorance, maya, or lack of knowledge. Because of ignorance, world appears like a mirage in the sky. When mind disappears, only one limitless sky-like Absolute will be realised. What is mind? It is thought. And thought is like sky, and sky is void and empty. Only nothingness then pervades. For instance, a ruby shines in different hues of the colour red. A darker hue hides the redness of the ruby and the objects visible through it. However, a bright red hue accentuates the redness and its translucency appears restored. Similarly, the Supreme Self has infinite powers - when the power of ignorance comes forth, neither the Self nor the Its infinite capacities are visible. Conversely, when the light of Knowledge arrives, the Self becomes profoundly evident, and the objective world and everything that happens in it appears nothing more than It's magical play. 10. Too many wannabe chiefs, not enough injuns IMO. Most people (amongst the initiated) want to be the next Sant Jarnail Singh and attain the glory associated with such an exalted position but nobody wants to put the work in to getting there. When jostling for position and trying to justify their allegiance to a jathebandi, they sadly miss out on the bigger picture; that you are a Sikh first and foremost, and other Sikhs who believe in Sri Guru Granth Sahib and Dasme Paathshah's bani are your brothers and sisters. Amongst the general, non-religious and non-spiritual Sikh youth populace I really don't know where to start. A ban on Indian satellite channels? :lol2: A gift of a Sikh history book to every boy and girl born in a Sikh household (to be given to the child when he or she can read) so we don't have to hear the nonsense "But Guru Nanak believed in equality" she says before she bolts through the front door and runs off with Faisal from college?

  11. Why are people abusive towards each other on this forum? Not very Sikhi-like behaviour :wow: This is a complex subject not easily resolved. I am by no means an expert, but nevertheless here's my opinion. I believe there are several issues involved: 1. Language is certainly an issue but it's more complex than just having translations of Gurbani and English services. We should learn from long-lasting small-scale religions such as Judaism and Buddhism. Jewish families living across the Western world strive to teach their children a thing or two about their religion. A good number of youth spend a few years in religious school in Israel or elsewhere where they learn the language and live a pure life. Meanwhile Rabbis typically know English and whilst that helps the youth, once someone is spiritually inclined, they learn Hebrew. Gurbani is of course difficult because it is made up of many languages and archaic or colloquial expressions, so learning Punjabi will not give someone access to the full Granth. This is especially a challenge for non-Punjabi Sikh converts, for whom an initial understanding can be most easily gained through translations. It is however universally accepted that translations are not as good as the real thing and most converts strive to do Gurbani vichar and struggle and learn. Yes it would be helpful for such people (I'm one of these people) for there to be English services at Gurdwaras (perhaps alternative sessions?), but I have seen many Gurdwaras in the UK with english translations, Gurmukhi and transliterations on slideshow so that's quite a good thing. This is however not related to the OP's question of Sikh youth. I don't believe that using English will solve all 'problems'. Read on below. 2. The problem of the Youth is less not understanding Gurbani as it is being exposed to popular culture, succumbing to peer-pressure, and not being inspired enough by their parents and elders to take an interest, both in spirituality as well as the importance of leading a modest and principled life. It's common to find youth from Western/not very religious Jewish families become fully orthodox. What is noteworthy is that even though they may not be religious, kids are brought up in an environment where things must be Kosher (ranging from food to modesty). At this juncture, we may compare ourselves to Islam. A higher proportion of Muslims in the West either grow more religious or principled as they age or have always lived like that. Of the young muslim women I know, a good number wear head scarves and vehemently believe in protecting their modesty. I don't personally know a young Sikh female keski wearer, very few Amritdharis, a handful of 'Gursikhs' and the overwheming majority don't give a monkeys about morals and decency. I don't know a single young Sikh male who keeps a flowing beard- it's either trimmed or tied yet every single one of the bearded muslims I know are very proud of their long beards. The way in which kids are brought up is very important. A friend of mine was brought up in the strictest of environments by Amritdhari parents. She however cut her hair as a teenager and is now indistinguishable from anyone else. I believe the key difference is that she was not inspired by her parents/elders in her youth. Little can be done about preventing exposure to popular culture and peer pressure but inspiring youth is important and this in turn can only happen if parents and older family members themselves are good role models. 3. The Amritdhari thresshold is quite high, people are afraid of the level of commitment required. Amritdharis are also perceived to be elitist and uncool. Christian youth (who have 'embraced Jesus') celebrate high principles by CREATING THEIR OWN POPULAR CULTURE, complete with rock songs against pre-marital sex etc. Look at Punjabi bhangra songs, lyrics and videos are absolutely shocking. 4.Youth are brought up in family environments which celebrate beauty/money/career achievement over the vices and virtues in Gurbani. Compare this to Islam where many men keep full beards. They are still easily able to find matrimonial matches, unlike our (fully) bearded youth who are rejected by women. 5. Lack of inspiring religious leaders and scholars. There are a few that others have quoted as doing a good job but they are few and far between. This is not helped by too much infighting and politics in Akal Takht. They are too busy controlling deras and playing poitics than addressing the burning issue of the future of Sikhi going to ruin. 6. Whilst not a problem in itself, Sikhi is complex to fully appreciate and differs from the Abrahamic view of God/Heaven/Hell etc. People from other religions can easily relate to their religion and readily explain core principles. Ask 10 Sikhs about core principles and you'll get 6-7 different answers. 7. In most religions, spirituality and morals/principles are linked, but in Sikhism, lack of spirituality amongst the youth automatically translates to lack of morals/principles. Once again families are to blame for not being able to imbibe the necessary values in their kids upbringing. You can't teach spirituality, it comes with Waheguruji's kirpa, but you can teach kids values. Edit: And some more fundamental issues: 1. Sikh immigrants to the West like to integrate rather than live in isolation. There is great pressure on immigrants to accept the Western way of life, else be seen as backwards/fresh off the boat/not patriotic/bundled in with the muslims (many of whom in spite of great discrimination wear their mullah beards and headscarves and see themselves as muslim first and nationality second). This has obvious consequences on future generations. 2. Community divisions: Casteism and discrimination. I know plenty of youth from Sikh backgrounds who are completely non-religious but strongly believe in caste and also discriminate against darker skinned/poor people. Youth like to belong to something and selfish human attitude to be chauvinistic is inherant in us, so caste and discrimination brings youth together more than Sikhi does. This relates to negative (older) role models in the community. 3. Most religions unite against something negative rather than for something positive. For the muslims, it's the infidels/western 'imperialism'/sunni vs shiia etc, for the Jews it's the global conspiracy against them and Zionism, for Christians, it's gays and abortionists. Sikhs (and Hindus) have big chips on their shoulders from centuries of Muslim rule and the tough times faced by the Gurus. As a result, Sikhs rally and unite in paki/muslim bashing and exalt in reminiscing in the glory of bloody battles from the middle-ages. Battles and bloodshed should serve as a reminder to be peace loving human beings. It is our responsibility to get over it, forgive and forget and bring the focus back towards positive spiritualism, like the Buddhists do (although nowadays even some Tibetan Buddhist youth unite against Chinese rule). Bhul chuk maaf karna.

  22. Okay, I am really confused about this topic as well.. but about jhootha there is a shabad from Gurbani: http://www.sikhitothemax.com/Page.asp?SourceID=G&PageNo=&ShabadID=2010 ਦੂਧੁ ਤ ਬਛਰੈ ਥਨਹੁ ਬਿਟਾਰਿਓ || The calf has contaminated the milk in the teats. ਫੂਲੁ ਭਵਰਿ ਜਲੁ ਮੀਨਿ ਬਿਗਾਰਿਓ ||੧|| The bumble bee has contaminated the flower, and the fish the water. ||1|| ਮਾਈ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਹਾ ਲੈ ਚਰਾਵਉ || O mother, where shall I find any offering for the Lord's worship? ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਫੂਲੁ ਅਨੂਪੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਉ ||੧|| ਰਹਾਉ || I cannot find any other flowers worthy of the incomparable Lord. ||1||Pause|| So pretty much this states that pretty much everything is 'jhootha' and we cannot really claim anything as 'pure' or 'sucha' in that means..but i do believe in proper sanitation and also I am questionable about the fact that amritdharis should only eat from amritdharis.. what difference does that make if we say that god resides in all of us.. and this is another shabad that kinda states that all the stuff we do to attain 'purity' is worthless..Isn't that the same thing that the bramins did? ਅਭਾਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਬਕਰਾ ਖਾਣਾ || They eat the meat of the goats, killed after the Muslim prayers are read over them, ਚਉਕੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ || but they do not allow anyone else to enter their kitchen areas. ਦੇ ਕੈ ਚਉਕਾ ਕਢੀ ਕਾਰ || They draw lines around them, plastering the ground with cow-dung. ਉਪਰਿ ਆਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ || The false come and sit within them. read the whole shabad.. http://www.sikhitothemax.com/page.asp?ShabadID=1738 If your mind is strong then why does it matter who prepared your food.. and logically there is no way that the food that we eat only comes in contact with amritdharis only and what makes you think that washing it makes it any 'pure' (not referring to sanitation)? you do not know where it was sitting and who packed it..and i guess we can argue about this all we want.. everybody has different mentality on this issue...I think if your naam-simran is so strong these things shouldn't mean anything to you..

  24. The main article is not written by S. Simranjit Singh Mann. The article is from The Indian Express. S. Mann just wrote the commentary at the end. If you have such a strong feeling against S. Simranjit Singh Mann, ignore the commentary written by him—just read the article written by The Indian Express. I think the article gives a good insight into how the policies about the minority communities in India have been formed since 1947. O’ please read the article - just don’t throw the article in the garbage just because Mann’s name is in it. . You may even discover that there are more things happening in India other than Simarnjit Singh Mann forming links with missionaries.

  28. This has already started. I know a western Nihang who claims that half of the casualties in operation blue star were Nihangs. 32 thousand nihangs is a HUGE over exaggeration. The Nihang army of Akali Phula Singh Jee never numbered more than 3000. Maharaja Ranjit Singh was apprehensive about their power and fearlessness which is why he would direct their uncontrollable aggressiveness towards fighting the Pathans. This not only provided M Ranjit Singh with a powerful source of manpower who fought with a fanatical religious zeal but also made sure that the Nihang numbers would be maintained (by getting Shaheed in war) instead of increasing to the point where they might be strong enough to challenge the Lahore Durbar. The high point of the Nihangs was during Akali Phula Singh Jee's time period. After Akali Jee got Shaheed the Nihang power and influence began to decline to the point where they were no longer a major player in Sikh politics by the 1st Anglo Sikh war.

  31. Hari Ram Gupta is very prejudiced and biased in his books. He doesn’t accurately present the Sikh history of Guru Period and early 18th century. I couldn’t read his last 3 volumes because first 2 were more than enough to show how he misquoted many sources, twisted facts, added his own remarks and rejected some of the accepted ones. I’d recommend books by Sohan Singh Seetal, Prem Singh Hoti and Dr. Ganda Singh as best sources to study Sikh history of early 19th century. Even during Akali Phoola Singh, Nihungs never numbered to 32,000 in any battle. I think nangs are making up stories in a desperate attempt to have a claim at the glory. In 100 years they will state that there were many thousand nihungs in Harimandar Sahib in 1984 fighting against the Indian army. Guru Rakha

  32. What love to see what DalSingh has to say about this. I find his posts to be balanced and he is quite well read in Sikh ithihaas. I do believe exaggeration of history and using it for your own agenda/twisting it is a grave disrespect to the memory of what happened and takes away from the depth of our history.

  34. Yes, this is all fictional history about Nihangs. These are the same people who have hard time believing that Santa Singh was the biggest traitor for Sikh religion, and this happened less than 30 years ago (i.e., what Santa Singh did in 1984). Just imagine what their history will be for the events that happened 200 years ago!

  35. WJKK WJKF, It is common for the supplements to have difference ingediants depending on what countries they are sold in or it may be that ingrediants have been added/removed to the product in the previous/newer versions. Bro, don't let no one tell you ever that you will not be forgiven and be able to re take amrit for unknownigly making mistakes. Waheguru is always Nirbhau and Nirvair. There have been massive pappi's that have been blessed so DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE SAYING YOU CAN'T TAKE AMRIT AGAIN !!!!!

  37. Contact the manufacturer direct. Explain that the label says it does not contain egg but online a few websites say it does. Veer go with what your conscience is saying. If you feel guilt in consuming the product, stop taking it. Simple. Also protein shakes :s im not keen on. Eat tofu day and night, soya milk and lots of it, anyyyything and everything with chickpeas and lentils in it. Those shakes contain so much cr*p. stick to the real foods and you'll know what they contain.

  38. There most likely is egg whites in the product IMO, they probs made a mistake in the labelling. Can you not phone the manufacturers and get it cleared up first? Or write them an email or something? Also complain about it and it hopefully doesnt happen to anyone else. We pay for something, we expect it to match description given on the label atleast lol. read this info maybe if you want to take it further http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/scotland/consumer_s/travel_leisure_and_food_e/consumer_food_and_restaurants_e/complaints_about_food_labelling_and_advertising.htm

  39. Kalsingh, when someone asks you your religion, do you say your a Sikh? Because then your personal reasons become wider as people get their impression of religions based on the people they meet, people like you and me. Just hoping the lack of dastaar doesn't bring the pride of the Sikh image down. Just saying cuz I've seen kids in high school with a full beard and no dastaar or patka, only a joora and it did not look nice at all. I was even embarrassed. :s

  43. Yes, you are right; Sukha is bhang (cannabis, weed, marijuana) which is an intoxicant. Sikh Rehat Maryada: Section Four: Chapter X: Article XVI (a) A Sikh must not take hemp (cannabis), opium, liquor, tobacco, in short, any intoxicant. His only routine intake should be food.
