  10. Gurfateh Ji Please find attached the Sarbat (LGBT Sikhs) statement on the UK Same Sex Marriage Bill (PDF). Incase of difficulty opening the attachment, the text version is below. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Sarbat Sarbat statement on the UK Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill We at Sarbat are delighted to see the second reading of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill overwhelmingly voted in favour by a majority of MPs (400 to 175). The Bill will extend the legal form of marriage to lesbian, gay and bisexual couples and permit religious groups to perform such marriages should they wish. This is an important step towards equality for same sex couples. An overwhelming majority of the public now favour allowing same sex couples to marry, and support has increased rapidly. Most people now agree that it will strengthen, and not weaken the institution of marriage. Sarbat actively promotes the rights of LGBT Sikhs. The Sikh faith enshrines equality for all and it does not discriminate against gay men or women who wish to make a life-long commitment to each other. We believe that there is no room for discrimination within our community for being who we are. Indeed, Sikhism being a progressive religion, built upon the fundamental principle of “all being equal” – any such discrimination would be going against Sikhi itself. There is no reason why a committed Sikh couple should not be allowed to get married in a Gurdwara. The Lavaan (Sikh Wedding Hymns) are also non-gender specific, and so same-sex marriage is possible within the Sikh Dharam. However, most Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) in the current time would be reluctant to conduct a same-sex marriage because of an edict made by the Jathedar (Leader) of the Akal Takht in 2005 which banned same sex marriages. Sarbat’s view is that this guidance is flawed. It is based more on cultural and personal bias, rather than on a view of Gurbani (holy scriptures). Furthermore, the guidance issued is contrary to Sikh teachings. This statement is not in the spirit of his appointment, which is to promote Sikhi values and principles and to issue guidance and statements that are rooted in Sikhi. We invite the Jathedar Sahib to issue a clarification of his original statement, explaining what Sikh principles and teachings he draws on to reach his conclusion. The Jathedar has been heavily criticised in the past for making ill-judged comments. The case of the Delhi rape victim in December 2012, being one such example. We remain optimistic that, this most basic of human rights, will be recognised by the larger Sikh community. Sarbat is a social and support group for and by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered Sikhs. We offer a platform for like-minded Sikhs from all walks of life, and aim to promote the LGBT Sikh cause in a fair and courteous manner. Sarbat Sarbat Statement on UK Marriage Bill 2013.pdf

  11. When quoting shabas, we should quote the ang numbers where possible.!! Above is ang 70 from what I gather- Just a little comment below that I had made previously elsewhere with reference to this shabad.- Has there ever been a moment in your life, even if it was for a few minutes- when you felt so loved and connected with everything around you? A moment where you suddenly felt that you realized everything and you were a part of this WHOLE universe and this same universe was a HUGE part of you ?? It's a feeling where you suddenly feel blessed and want this whole blessing to be experienced by everyone and everything around you. If you have had this short lived feeling of anand or bliss, then this is the only thing that remains permanently engrained on your soul. When you feel pushed or on the edge, just try and connect to that same moment and in an instance you can forget what you were fretting about. The above shabad tells us to remember and connect with him for that moment. It's not just remembering in mind, but it is connection of the whole mind, body and soul. It's more than just surrender and submitting, it's actually becoming ONE and like with him. When this happens you feel that you ARE the Universe and the Universe is you, so all this worry is just a product and weakness of your mind. Remember, you are NOT your mind, you are beyond and much bigger than that. it's just that your mind has a clever way of convincing and conquering you.

  24. Shiv Shakti, I guess that's a way of looking at this tukh. Furthur thought on this, I would have to disagree that it means Shiv Shakti, because Purkh and Naar here are plural not singular implying men and women not man and woman. But I get your point.

  27. Sarbat Jee, homosexuality is not compatible with Sikhi. You have totally misunderstood Gurmat Sidhaants. Since the start Gurmat has always advocated Grishti jeevan between a man and woman. Humans by nature are born with all sorts of urges and weaknesses. But Gurmat teaches Sikhs not to indulge and give in to those urges and weaknesses. Sikhs are taught to adopt rehit, meditate on Naam, read/hear Gurbani whilst controlling those urges and weaknesses. Those who indulge in wordly urges and human weaknesses end up in the cycle of life and death(charasee lakh joons)

  28. Sikhi values and gay sexuality are not compatible. If you want to be gay by all means be gay and lesbian but dont try to claim you are Sikhs and they are one and the same. If we as a community go down this road of accepting gays as Sikhs then the case can be made for other sexual abnormalities such as pedophiles and animal sex lovers... you at sarbat believe in equality for all.... then how can anyone discriminate against those abnormal and sexual deviant people? you cant unless you want to be hypocrites. Bottom line is Sikh scriptures clearly state a man marries a woman explicitly and does not state the case for man can marry a man or woman marry a woman. So case closed sarbat gay Sikhs who number probably just a dozen individuals vs 800,000 strong Sikh community making it a non-issue for Sikhs we got more imrportant issues as a community to deal with. Sarbat gays really needs to grow up and stop trying to meddle in Sikh religious matters.

  30. Nagar Kirtans were begun by the sixth Guru ji. This was during a time when the worldly emperors would take out processions. As the Sixth Guru was introducing the concept of temporal authority to the sangat, the nagar kirtan was a part of this process of honouring Guru ji as a spiritual and temporal Lord. Really what it comes down to for the individual is what you choose to focus on. You can go to the Gurdwara and waste time in the nindya, the politics, the food, the socialising, or you can focus on Naam. The same thing goes with the nagar kirtans. Although I do agree that a lot of the gandh that people try to bring into the nagar kirtans should be removed/blocked by the organising committees.

  33. Did our all ten Satgurujis worshipped any pictures/photos/paintings etc ? > NO. Did they ordained us to do so ? > NO As most of veers in the forum have rightly said that these paintings/pictures are impressions/beliefs/visualizations/interpretation of artists/painters; so nobody knows how our Satgurus exactly looked. I think, after our Gurus merged themselves in Sri Akaalji, we started missing them and out of this attachment, fond, regard, loyalty, affection, bond; we tried to have a link with Gurus and this was in the form of paintings/pictures which was the only art or form in the 18th & 19th century. Slowly & gradually people started worshipping and bowing (matha tek) to the pictures imitating (bhed chaal) hindu fellows as it is vastly prevalant in their culture.

  39. source: http://www.rarasahib.com/Isher3.htm Self Percept (Atam Updesh) Why are you so engrossed in worries? Why are you afraid of some one? Who may kill you? The soul is immortal; it neither dies nor takes birth. The present is here and now, the past is irrecoverable and the future will be good. Don't fret over the past and don't be worried about the future. The present is going on. Why do you cry? What did you lose? When you were born, what did you bring along, which has been lost? What did you produce which has been perished? It is here that you gained and it is here that you lose. The man comes to; and goes from world, empty handed. What you own today was not yours yesterday and will not be yours tomorrow. It does not and will not belong to anyone. You consider it your own and rejoice. This happiness of possession leads you to utter grief. Yours is this world. Start from where you feel to; stay where you desire and wind up where you want to. It has no beginning and no end. You don't fear anyone, but yourself. You are the fright and also the frightened. Change is the truth of life. What you consider as death is life in reality. In a moment a multi-millionaire is turned pauper. Give up the feeling of possession, great & the mean; differentiation of friend & foe. Then all is yours and you for everyone. Your corporeal being is a product of air, water and fire and it merges into the same leaving behind neither blood nor bones. Still yours existence remains the same. Then ponder over what you are. Wake up! and become the eternal sons of the Almighty. You are the great and unique manifestation of Nature's power. All the divine powers are possessed by you, like a tree hidden in the seed. In fact you don't fear anybody; you don't have any worry, suspicion, pain or grief. You are His dear ones. Surrender yourself completely to Him. Always, remember the "Waheguru" (God) to achieve salvation. Let your life be guided by the saying "Whatever God wills, is good". Be content with the will of God. Remember Him both in pleasure & pain.
