So....UK Sikhs. We're a peculiar bunch arne't we ? An unusual bunch in fact. When we go back to Punjab we meet Canadian, American and Australian Sikhs back in the village and the first thing we notice is how proud they are of being Canadian, American and Australian. They proudly display their national flags on their houses, vehicles and clothing and have integrated so well into their home countries that they have reached the very top of society. The Canadian Sikhs especially have adapted so well to that famous American / British hybrid sense of humour that they have reached the very top of that profession too. And then....sadly....there is the UK Sikhs. A very unusual bu…

I was reading another thread about women and wanted to make a thread with women and men addressing issues of sexism in society. I believe this is still a Huge problem not only in minority cultural groups in the world, but also society as a whole. What are people’s views on issues and how can we tackle them? One of my strong opinions is that sexism is still rampant with Punjabi’s, and I have myself fallen victim to it, leading me to having been beaten up by a close family member violently,

Why Do Sikh Men Wear Turbans And Not The Women? 1 2
by Guest Studying Religion- 18 replies

Hello, I am studying religions of the world and am a great admirer of the philosophies expressed by the Sikh Gurus. I have a question I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. I have read about the importance of the turban to Sikhs, what it represents, commitment, identity, a declaration of the sovereignty of that identity; all of which I admire and respect, but which lead me to then ask: why just the men? I have seen that some Sikh women wear turbans, but that most - even the very devout - do not. Why is this? Does it mean that the turban is more cultural than religious? Culture is certainly very important too! I would love to understand better. Thank y…

vjkk vjkf! sangat jeeo, im taking amrit soon and i am seriously thinking of the dastaar. But i was going to start with the patka for many reasons. A dastaar carries many responsibilites as in you are now respresenting so you have to be perfect ..kinda. i think i should wait for it maybe a couple of months. but now i was think of the patka becuase it accomplishes keeping your head covered and it would be less of a shock for my family memebers and stuff. My dad is also against dastaar in a way so i thought a patka would like cool him down at first and then slpwly. so my question here is is it okay to wear a patka? any advice ?

Amrit Shak Singh who drink alchohol 1 2 3

I need some advise plz. I know of a man who is Amrit Shak but drinks alchohol and eats meat regularly. His parents are well respected Amrit Shak members of the community as are his grandparents. He acts religious in front of his family but is drinking alchohol and eating meat when not with his family. His parents praise him everywhere they go although a lot of the people around them now know of his acts as he is regularly seen in various pubs and clubs. His actions show he has no respect for his family but even worse what respect must he have for Guru Ji's teachings. What should be done about this individual?

Why are Sikh women always blamed for letting down Sikhi when Sikh men have also done it? Sardar Ishar Singh Nakai of Nakai Misl which was one of the twelve Sikh Misls converted to Islam to marry a Muslim lady. He took the name Abdul Aziz Nakai and his descendents are influential people in Pakistani politics. M.Ranjit Singh married a Muslim nautch girl moran who opened Arabic and Persian schools after marriage and a mosque. She outraged Muslims when she spent one of her first nights with Ranjit Singh on top of the minaret of Wazir Khan Mosque. Boota Singh, a ex Sikh soldier of the British army is well known for his love story with a Muslim woman Zainab. He illega…

Some Sikhs are very fair and have light eyes unlike the older generation (according to people I have asked) how is this? I’m a Sikh but I am a chamar and when I go to the gurdwara (ravidaas) generally the people are dark skinned with black/dark brown eyes but when I went to my local gurdwara which is guru Nanak gurdwara and predominantly the people are jatt they are very fair skinned, so is it to do with caste? Theres a Sikh in my school I think he’s a jatt because his last name is Dhaliwal (apologies if I’m wrong) and he has very light skin with bright green eyes, his parents are the same and when I asked him if he had any European heritage he laughed and sai…

Kaam (lust) is one of the 5 vices. Our aim is to overcome these 5 vices to emerge with Waheguru (God) after death. However to get married and have kids we need Kaam, so i am confused on this part. Yes we can Jap Naam (meditate) as a family man as well, but without Kaam how can we have kids. Post you're views.
