  1. Its pretty astonishing how heavily Maya has trapped people in the Western world. No one is willing to take even 15 minutes to sit down and give themselves some time.

  2. Why don't you do something to alleviate the suffering of the world like Bhagat Puran Singh Ji - dedicate your life to seva. If you decide to end your life, you will only wander about like a ghost or something until your allocated life span is over, then you will be called to account.

  3. Ok, this has been really annoying me for a while now. It has been going on for quite while and yet as far as i am aware no one has batted an eyelid. Not just non Amritdharis are guilty of this but so are countless of Amritdharis and Gursikhs. So far this year I have received 6 wedding and Akhand Paath cards and in each and every one of them there is a tuk from bani! Two of these cards I have received from Amritdhari families. I think putting bani in these cards is extremely disrespectful! The cards if posted get thrown all over the place and are held by someone who may have just had a bacon sandwich or cigarette a few mins ago. If they are hand delivered then most are left all over the place. And once the wedding/ Akhand Paath passes how many get thrown straight into the bin? We wouldn't treat an ang from Guru Granth Sahib Ji or from the gutka in this manner so why is it acceptable for a card that contains a line of bani. In fact what is the need to contain bani in the card in the first place? Stick what ever else you want on there but LEAVE THE BANI OUT!!!!

  5. Thanks guys for reminding me to look at which way my moustache is growing. Middle hairs are growing downwards while the hairs on the sides are growing to the sides. Moustache like this would be pretty good. One like this will also look good.

  6. you can't. Jesus couldn't either, despite whatever untruths the Christians may wish to spout. If Jesus had taken on all the worlds sins than why did people keep coming back?? With no more karam they would have been mukt. Truth is, people need pain to wake them up. Explanations and examples of what to do, holy teachings and darshan of sants, don't always cut it. Sometimes people need pain, this wakes them up a bit and forces them to make the necessary changes in life so that they can live according to the promptings of their soul. Pain is the cure and pleasure is the disease - dukh daroo sukh rog paiyaa. By not feeling pain they would no longer have access to the medicine that they need. Your intentions are very noble. But keep in mind that when Raja Janak ji saved all the souls in hell, Raja Janak had an immense amount of naam kamai and all the paap was not even equal to the weight of this kamai. But nowadays paap has increased immensely, and you don't have enough naam kamai to handle it. If you want to help, start walking the path to change yourself, become a mahapurkh, then free others with your teachings, your example, and a little bit of extra push if they need it. If you do enough kamai, you can even wipe out peoples' lekhs with no effort at all!! When you can do that, ji, please come find me. I'll be waiting for you.

  9. I was talking to a person who has waged a war on spaying perfume around Guru Maharaj Ji. This person has gone to the highest authorities and told them to stop this and most have now relented, all because most perfumes have alcohol in them. My basic knowledge of chemistry tells me that alcohol is a group of chemicals, just like hydrocarbons, or benzoates or estas (if you smell nail varnish it’s an esta group of chemicals). Any chemical ending ‘OL’ is an alcohol – Phenol, ethanol, Polyproponol and so on, but they are not sharaab. Phenol is not brandy, ethanol is not rum and polyproponol is not whisky. If you drank Phenol you would not be drinking sharaab, it is chemical and would probably kill you. So here we have a person who has probably done a great disservice all because of over zealousness. I may be wrong but that is my understanding.

  10. If today you take over the office of Jathedar Sahib of the Akal Takht in a democratic voting system and now you have 4 year term but have limited cash access because of let's say SGPC bureaucratic red tape etc. Tell us your strategy or how and what will be your road map to bring sikhi back in today's youth in Punjab? Please take your time to answer the following questions. You have a team of 10 highly well educated gurmat principled advisers appointment by others, so you do not know anything about them apart from their resume. Advantages: Head of Sikh Community worldwide. Community looks up to your decision. You can challenge any authority within sikh community. You don't have to answer or can be called by any country court etc. Unlimited donated land of sgpc and various school/colleges. Dis-advantages: Limited funds. Have to work with less gurmat principled members. Deal with Punjab Politics. Can't use violence. Can't force anyone. Can't fire anyone unless a specific reason. 1. What will you do? (try to avoid making dictatorship or violent decisions - such as remove him or her, ban this or that). 2. What major positive or negative changes you will plan to bring? (please be realistic, you can't say: kill him or arrest them) 3. What will be your 4 major policies or your signature ideas (1st to be highest priority. Example: Obama's signature platform was healthcare and clean energy) 4. What changes will you prefer or plan to bring in SGPC? (Some facts: There are 175 members, mostly voted by rural folks. They are official holders of annual 600 crore budget). 5. Create your own question and answer it by yourself !! Please share your knowledge with others and later on sangat will vote whose policy is the best. Top 3 Winners will get awesome free goodies from SikhSangat :D Some rules: You can't overturn previous jathedars' decisions or ruling. You can't decide on matters such as Raagmala, meat, keski, dasam granth sahib and so on. Oct 18th, 11:59 this thread closes automatically and then poll will start in another thread.. Sikhsangat Sewadars are welcome to participate but they won't be eligible for prizes. Have fun & take your time GO !!!!

  11. Sikh Federation UK welcomes IOC decision to suspend India due to Indian Government Interference London, UK: The IOC had repeatedly told the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to adhere to its own constitution and the Olympic Charter and not follow the Indian Government’s sports code for its election on Wednesday 5 December. After months of warnings, the IOC executive board met today in Lausanne, Switzerland and imposed the sanction when the IOA failed to comply with the world body’s demands for holding independent elections. Suspension means the Indian body will stop receiving IOC funding and its officials will be banned from attending Olympic meetings and events. India’s athletes will be barred from competing in Olympic or similar multi-nation events like the Asian Games, being held in South Korea in 2014, under the Indian tricolour, although the IOC could allow them to do so under the Olympic flag. Indian athletes have said the decision brings disgrace to India. Top Indian shooter Mansher Singh said that the decision would mean that Indian players would not be playing anymore for India and there would be no Indian tricolour flying at these events. The IOC had also recently threatened to suspend Kuwait’s Olympic committee, but the Gulf nation amended its sports law last week and was not hit with an IOC sanction today. The Indians have been mired in wrangling over the elections to replace Suresh Kalmadi, who was jailed for nine months on corruption charges related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The Indian vote, originally scheduled for last month, has been postponed to Wednesday following the resignation of election commission chairman S Y Quraishi. On Friday, the IOA announced the appointment of some officials to posts which were not contested in the elections. Appointed as secretary general was Lalit Bhanot, who is also facing corruption charges relating to the Commonwealth Games. Bhanot is out on bail after being held in custody for 11 months last year. The IOC Ethics Committee had in October warned the Indian body against fielding either Bhanot or former IOA chief Suresh Kalmadi. Haryana state politician Abhey Chautala who is set to take over as President of the IOA has blamed Indian IOC member Randhir Singh for the suspension claiming he has used his contacts to have the IOA suspended. A Sikh Federation (UK) spokesman said: “The IOC decision to suspend India and prevent athletes from competing under the Indian flag is highly embarrassing for India.” “The IOA is run by corrupt Indian politicians, some have been convicted and are criminals and others such as, Jagdish Tytler, who is the current Vice President, have been implicated in instigating mass murder of innocent Sikhs so we welcome the tough stance taken by the IOC to suspend India with immediate effect.” “We have written to the IOC welcoming the decision to suspend India and exploring the possibility of Sikh athletes from across the globe competing in future events under the Sikh flag.” Source: Gurjeet Singh, Sikh Federation (UK) Press Secretary http://sikhsangat.org/2012/sikh-federation-uk-welcomes-ioc-decision-to-suspend-india-due-to-indian-government-interference/

  15. Bhai Mani Singh’s Janamsakhi has been interpolated. Its older manuscripts show Kattak date as per Dr. Trilochan Singh. Oldest copy of Bhai Bala Ji’s Janamsakhi of 1658 shows Kattak date. Bhai Behlo Ji’s (contemporary of Guru Arjan Dev Ji) granth, Soochak Parsang Guru Ka, also shows Kattak date. Some most accurate Gurparnalis such as the one by Gulab Singh show Kattak date as well as the correct total age. Vaisakh Nahin Kattak by Ishar Singh Nara is a good refutation to Sardar Karam Singh’s book. There has been a long discussion on this topic before. Guru Rakha

  17. Nope, no conflict here, just two Gurmukhs/GurSikhs who have nothing but respect for one another. This picture to me is a reminder of how there are people now a days who are trying to change Sikh history and are creating issues in hopes to split the Khalsa Panth into sects. Let this be a reminder to all the youth who who are introduced to Sikhi via a person along with their personal beliefs. Sikhi isn't about which rehit you follow or what jatha you belong to, but what speaks to your soul and what helps you elevate yourself closer to the Guru. Learn to live and let live and avoid stereotyping someone based on jatha. A lot of hate being seen as of late and this picture really made me happy.

  18. After the goal of 25000 signatures was achieved, it appears that people have stopped signing the petition. However the ‘Sikhs for Justice” has appealed to those who have not signed as yet, to continue signing the petition. Petition is still open for signing till December 15, 2012 ******** An Alert issued by the Sikhs for Justice reads, “Keep signing the Sikh Genocide petition to President Obama till December 15. We should get aim to get 1 signature for every Sikh murdered by the Government of India during the Genocide. That’s over 37,000 signatures” Please keep on promoting the petition via Social Networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter. Please ask all your relatives, friends (both Sikhs and Non-Sikhs) – especially living in USA, to sign the petition. 19. No, I'm not saying that Guru ji invented these stories of ghosts and demons to scare people. I'm saying that people already believed in these things, and probably did elaborate rituals to ward them off. If Guru ji would have told these people that they are being silly and superstitious, they wouldn't have listened to him. Instead he told them that if they remember God, then these ghosts and demons cannot touch them. It was his way of guiding them towards the gurmat path. Remember the story of how the villagers were throwing water to their ancestors living on the sun? Guru Ji didn't tell them they were being silly. Instead, he started throwing water towards his farm in Kartarpur. They asked him why he was being so foolish. He replied, "If this water cannot reach my farms, then how can it reach your ancestors on the sun?" You see, this was his thareeka (method).

  21. Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh Despite our various attempts of deleting topics relating to one particular person who is not a member of this forum, we would like to make our stand clear. We do not want nor welcome any post/topic/reply promoting or attacking person named 'Kamalroop'. We do not want anyone (whether it is our veteran member or new member) to use the platform of SikhSangat to talk anything relating to this person. Please do not take an offense from our standpoint but we do not care who you are or how bad you want to write or talk about any particular person. Our forum is not made to talk about other person's character or create a fan base of anyone here. We want this forum to be used as a platform to discuss issues rather than getting into personal wars. To both sides, we do not want your agenda to be promoted here. If you have topics not involving personal attacks then that is more welcome, but other than that, take it somewhere else. To those who still do not understand our standpoint: We will not have anyone here talk negative about AKJ nor we would allow anyone from any jatha to attack any individual unless he/she holds a public position (such as politician etc). Those who defy this will go under-moderation without any notice. Waheguru ji ka khalsa Waheguru ji ki fateh

  22. Why do we need chemical filled perfumes anyway? Why not be all natural? Maybe management need to invest in a strong room air filter/purifier but spraying perfumes like in india is just crazy. In this particular case, I think situation is easily solvable as there is always availability of non-alcohol perfume in the market. Personally I think all managements should ban use of this chemical filled perfumes. LuckySingh veerji, This is not a rubbish topic but an important one as we need to do topmost satkaar of our guru sahib jee, sri guru granth sahib ji. I think it is good to know that there should be no such elements that is against our gurbani should come near to our guru sahib ji. I think that is or should be the main point of this topic.

  23. Rosewater smell is fine. The "alcohol" argument is ridiculous - clearly the person running around has no concept of "alcohol". I wonder what he thinks of the alcohols produced within his body, which would include ethanol (the stuff in alcoholic drinks)?

  24. WLS, What you have done is to present the experience of your family in 1947 with regard to the massacre of Muslims in Doaba as the experience of the entire Sikh community. This is similar to how Khushwant Singh has presented the Hindu-Sikh intermarriages that occurred in his family pre-1947 as the normative experience of the whole Sikh community. There is no doubt massacres of Muslims took place in East Punjab committed by Sikhs and the contemporary witnesses note the particular ferocity of these acts of violence. You appear to want the whole Panth to beat themselves over the actions of that generation without placing their actions in perspective. Note the background at the time the violence took place. 1. 40% of the community had suddenly become refugees, and moved to an area over which they still did not have political control. 2. If we accept that about one million were killed, 500,000 Muslims, 250,000 Sikhs and 250,000 Hindus. This meant that even though a lower number of Sikhs had died than Muslims, in terms of percentage 4.5% of Sikh population had been killed compared to 2.5% of Muslims and 2.6% of Hindus. For a small community losing such numbers would have been devastating. 3. There was a belief that the Muslims would choose to stay in East Punjab and the Sikh population numbers would be diluted and they would not be a majority in any of the East Punjab districts. Not only would the Muslims were staying put but they were also attacking Sikh refugees in areas where they should have been safe (East Punjab). The cities of Jalandhar as well as Ludhiana were being used as bases to attack neighbouring Sikh villages similar to the way the Bosnian Muslim enclave of Srebenica was used to attack Serb villages. 4. The Sikh Jathas replicated the exact same violence on the Muslims of East Punjab that the Muslims had visited on the Sikhs of Hazara in 1946. The Muslim leadership believed that the Sikhs had lost their martial nature due to decades of economic success they had enjoyed. In essence the Muslim league plan in Punjab was to use violence in Hazara to beat the rest of the Punjab's Sikhs into submission. As they Sikhs did not retaliate after Hazara this convinced the Muslim league that their plan had worked. This is why the violence after partition in East Punjab came as such a shock to the Muslim league. This is the reason that the Pakistani representative at the UN wanted a resolution passed blaming the Sikhs for the violence!

  25. The problem is not between these two gurmukhs, there is never been problem between two gurmukhs, if there was a problem then they wouldn't be gurmukh at the first place. The problem lies at over zealous youths/people from both sides who like to blow things out of proportions and exaggerate things. It's same crap everywhere..more a human nature than anything..!!

  26. I dont even know what happened to HSD1, but I think it was murder. But reincarnation brought me back. The thing about taking the moral high ground is that it holds Sikhs to standards that make us guilty whilst letting others off as their own belief systems dont have the same level of decency. Both the Koran and Bible(and Torah) all talk about how an Abrahamic should live in peace time and war time. In wartime those people have virtually no standards. Sikhi recognises this hypocrisy and you are right that a lot of what Sikhs did was wrong in 47 as it was more to do with land and control rather than justice and a fight for a homeland. But there were only so many Sikhs the Muslims could get their hands on, where as we could get more of them as their population levels were far higher. It's not an excuse, just an explanation of the disproportionate casualty levels. Also Panth Prakash shows ethnic cleansing had its uses for Sikhs and was often used for <banned word filter activated> for tat strikes against those who felt they were untouchable, a bit like how Muslims saw themselves in 47. Even today none of them display the same grief and self flagellation some of our own community do. The question is, if we hold ourselves to such high standard, how do we prevent such things happening? None of us lived through it. If I did, I cant honestly say how I would have reacted with all that was going on.

  29. I agree - powerful perfumes can be distracting. They used rose water in the past shaken from small decorative silver vase like bottles around Maharaj and the this was shaken over the Sangat. By shaking over the Sanagat it represented the welcoming of guests to the the Durbar of our Guru Maharaj.

  30. I sat inside Darbar Sahib/ Harmandir Sahib for the entire day right behind the Kirtani Jatha until Sukhaasan time and was a bit shocked they were spraying very powerful perfumes. I didn't particularly care at all for the smell before they sprayed it because I was so in tune with the kirtan and Guru Sahib, especially when chardikalaa jatha came to perform kirtan. It was an unforgettable experience - your senses take you into a completely different world. The perfume kind of brought me back into reality and did kind of make me uncomfortable. Rose water or something mild seems like a much better option.

  35. I feel a bit lighter when I analyse from another point of view - We have been betrayed by Nehru/Gandhi (the whole community), nothing to worry. AT LEAST WE HAVE NOT BETRAYED THEM, THAT IS THE APPRECIATION, else we would had this black spot on our history. We have been made GULAAM, ok no problem, The good part to appreciate is WE HAVE NOT MADE OTHERS GULAAM, good part of learn is when KHALSA RAAJ comes, we don't make others GULAAM. We respect the rights of all communities living in KHALSA RAAJ, respect their soverign rights and identities, and don't hijack somebody's identity. Lots of SIKH Genocide since 1947, Ok, good part to appreciate is WE HAVEN'T DONE GENOCIDE OF INNOCENT PEOPLE.

  36. Your suggestion that we chose the "besharm" over the "honourable" in 1947 is VERY problematic. I do not think it is right that hundreds of thousand of innocent Muslims were killed in 1947. But please note that the massacring was started by the Muslims in Rawalpindi (as others have pointed out in their links). That was before all of the bloodshed in East Punjab that virtually wiped out its Muslim population. That doesn't excuse the retaliation in East Punjab, but the timing of the events goes a long way towards explaining why the Sikhs had so many misgivings about joining Pakistan. So, considering the killing, looting and raping that began in West Punjab (long before any similar activity took place on a large scale in East Punjab), was there any basis to believe that choosing to join Pakistan would be choosing an "honourable" side? It was the Rawalpindi killings and the disturbances that followed that made the Sikhs so reluctant to join Pakistan. I am not disputing your suggestion that we cast our lot with besharms in joining in India. But it's not like there was any reason to believe that we'd be joining an "honourable" side in Pakistan. It was a lose-lose situation. Having said that, I do think the Sikh leadership could have come up with a better solution if they were more competent. Facilitating a bloody population transfer in which your community ends up concentrated in a tiny, truncated province is not exactly a brilliant idea.

If Guru Gobind Singh Ji and Guru Granth Sahib ji are the same why cant Prakash be done with Aad Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji? Now i dont want you to just skip the question asked above, really ask yourself it. Now the way it was described to me you may or may not agree with but imagine your kirpan. It not part of your body but it becomes part of you and you should treat it as part of your body even tho it isnt actually physically part of your body we treat it as though it is as we should never be without it. The same way Siri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji is the Kirpan of Aad Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, may not be part of Guru Sahib but should be treated as the same.
