  1. I found this quote I was looking for. It was by Giani Gian Singh regarding Shastar Vidya: "There was talk of such a science of archery and stick fighting only a few years ago in the Punjab that listening of it the English-educated young men will consider it astonishing. In sincerity I believe present day young men might just consider these skills and Shastar Vidya most likely impossible, because they have not even seen those bows nevermind stringing them. Like this, many sciences and skills after attaining their heights have declined. Before 1857 many quivers full of arrows, matchlocks, flintlock guns, swords, lances, spears, Sang, Katar, Pesh Kabz, pistols, shields etc., weapons, armour and many types of chainmail was found house to house, and all the people in their homes learned and taught Shastar Vidiya and became complete soldiers. Now no one even speaks of these skills the sons of brave warriors are becoming engrossed in making money, even to us who have employed Shastar Vidiya, it is becoming a dream. In another fifty years or so, this Vidiya would have dried up and people will say it (past skills) were but, all lies" ('Twarikh Guru Khalsa', Giani Gian Singh Nirmala (1899) Vol.1, Pa. 36-37) Credit to Freed on the SikhAwareness forum for finding this.

  2. Great ideas Veer Ji. I love the timeline idea. It might be interesting to put what others were up to at the same time. While x y z was still doing horrible things Guru Nanak Dev Ji is already teaching 1. I don't know if that makes sense.

  7. Rebuild khabran.sikhnerd.com This was an old project where I attempted to have all relevant sikh news and blogs in one place for easy consumption. I could resurrect this project as I think there is still room on the internet for something like this, though a simple RSS aggregator is likely too simple. Maybe you’d want to build more of a community-style site around the news articles being streamed in, or focus only on positive stories. Should also add audio/video/etc as well. There are a lot of ways I could make this better and more useful. Sikh Resource Archive Idea of creating a pure and simple online archive of sikh resources. This would be focused on digital collection of everything sikhi-related, with a specific goal of things that are ‘useful’. Timeline Another idea that I’ve been kicking around for a very long time is to make an awesome interactive timeline of Sikh History, across all sorts of dimensions. As specific as possible, with lot’s of different features and types of data you can access. To give a cool and easy-to-use view of sikh history and gurmat. Something like this or this. The main part of the project would be to consolidate the history into something that can be consumed by software, including lots of metadata, and making it free and open to all. This site is a great starting point and example to follow – it’s also very cool so check it out. Source - http://sikhnerd.com/

  8. I wonder if Gurbani didn't mention some people because it wasn't necessary...or productive...or they didn't have to. Like the..troubled kids at school got advice but the good kids..not perfect... didn't need a lesson and perhaps if given too much attention could distract readers who don't understand from Sikhi? Not much on Jesus either. If Jesus was on a good track, but his faith is totally destroyed and over run, and the Gurus had too nice of things to say about Jesus, it could funnel people into Christianity, which isn't the point or going to help them. I heard Katha that Jesus came to a Brahmgyani and said his desire is for his people to join the Sikh Paanth.

  11. One thing I've noticed since trying to understand the academic side of Sikhi is how little mention there is of Buddhism in mainstream Sikh discourse in terms of how it informs the greater spiritual and religious picture of Indian belief. Buddhism was a major movement in a religious, spiritual, and temporal sense for centuries in India, not a niche or fringe belief system. The British affect on our faith and our people also has no direct religious reference that we can point to for further comprehension. The Brahmin dogma Vs Islamic shariat dichotomy that dominates Sikh thought seems to limit and date our religious worldview to a specific period of time. Today, when we try to understand the modern world and Sikhs place in it, we use the framework of a particular social period of Indian history to understand and formulate ideas for the future. Sikh academics have a habit of either developing an attitude where they think they've outgrown the unavoidable provincial nature of Sikhi by undermining its uniqueness and limiting it purely to a social and militaristic reformation of existing Dharmic thought, OR the other end of the spectrum where Sikh thought is so insular and limiting that it refuses to countenance the fact that changing times dictate changing attitudes WITHOUT compromising the core tenets of the belief system. I feel this is a problem for us, but I don't see a solution to it in our present state, because we've evolved into particular groups from a habitual sense owing to various historical moments and experiences, and we lack the kind of Sikh minds that see things from viewpoint that sees the bigger global picture without succumbing to the unprovable metaphysical or mystical side of things.

  12. I agree, just a PSA to be careful for those wanting to learn from him. Pre-Covid, I learned Shastar Vidya from one of his students who warned me as well. I still have a lot to learn though as I was only on the first Panthira ?. I disagree a little on this part as he calls himself the last master of Shastar Vidhya and has been excommunicated by the Nihangs and I think Damdami Taksal as well. So there are some politics... Unfortunately this is true as well. We still have a problem with him even though it is proved that the Vidhya is authentic.

  18. Also the ancient Buddhist texts I studied began with acknowledging Vaheguru Akal Purakh created everything, but that is so far beyond our understanding it's stupid to try and describe it, which Gurbani tells us. They then say to clean your mind through meditation and eliminate desire and "I" and live a disciplined compassionate life so that one attains a state...in which they will then be able to ask the question again they started with. So really Buddhism is a religion that teaches pure meditation combined with proper action as the way to find... Vaheguru. Who they ommit from everything as being beyond their ability to grasp right now. We know experientially and from Gurbani how hard this is to do without Naam. They are still our brothers and sisters in the One religion. Closer than many others. Totally human and corrupted and missing some things just like everyone else. The only remedy Gursikhi. Gurbani has instructions for everyone to make what they were born into or love effective and reconnect it with Sat Dharam. They don't have to convert. They can fine tune what they do to be Guru Jis version. Or they can fully adopt the Gursikh life.

  23. I did think that too because its rare for Sikhs to use the word Sikhism. In the west it's often used by non Sikhs or in textbooks or as you mentioned coined by the colonial Christian's. To quote something I read "It was long ago during the British Raj that some english writers tagged -ism to Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism and Budhism referring to them as inferior religions to their own. You certainly do not see it tagged to Christianity, Islam, or the Jewish religions" to answer the original poster ...of course all religions are closely related, in the sense they all to varying extents connecting the individual to the Creator. yes Gurbani mentions all those things and uses many terms which are common to the languages used in that part of the word. But theres no doubt Guruji exposes many practices of the other religions which dont align to Gurmat.

  25. Here is full Sarbloh Granth Full Sarbloh Granth Thank you @shastarSingh for giving this to me. It is a very good Granth wrriten by Guru Gobind Singh Ji just remember after reading from it we should do Anand Sahib. Here is some info on Sarbloh Granth From Manglacharan.com First Chapter – ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਧਯਾਯThe first chapter contains the praise of Māhā Māyā, and Māhā Kāl. After losing to the demons, the Devtian (Gods and Goddesses) came under the protection of the Devi (Chandi). The Devi defeated the demon army and its leader Bhīmnād.Second Chapter – ਦੂਜਾ ਅਧਯਾਯBhīmnād’s wife prepares to become a Satī while his brother, Bīrjnād, prepares to wage war against all the Devtian. Indira then sends letters to all the Devtian asking for assistance in the war.Third Chapter - ਤੀਜਾ ਅਧਯਾਯThe demons got the upper hand on the gods and goddesses. Vishnu then sends Nārad as an ambassador to Bīrjnād. Bīrjnād would not listen and prepared for battle. At the beginning of the battle the 11 armies of Bīrjnād that were on foot were destroyed.Fourth Chapter - ਚੌਥਾ ਅਧਯਾਯA great battle full of terror is occurring. Giving Vishnu’s ambrosial nectur (amrit) to the Devitan they re-gained life. After Indira captures the demons, Bīrjnād attains victory and captures/imprisons Indira.Fifth Chapter – ਪੰਜਵਾ ਅਧਯਾਯAfter the Devtian experienced great pain in the battle they went before Akal Purkh and pleaded for help. Akal Purkh manifested himself as Sarbloh (all light). Sarbloh avatar made Ganesh his ambassador and sent him to Bīrjnād. Ganesh’s pleads fell on deaf ears and the war was started. The gods and goddesses used all their power to call on Sarbloh to help them. By getting Sarbloh's darshan all the Devtian and Demons were immersed in bliss. Bīrjnād then begins to praise Sarbloh. Sarbloh becomes a frightening form and has a great battle full of terror with Bīrjnād, in which Bīrjnād is defeated and killed.Following the conclusion of the story of Sarbloh avatar there are the following sections about Vishnu avatar, they are as follows:- Mach (fish) Avatar- Kach (tortoise) Avatar- Barhā (Wild-Boar) Avatar- Nar Singh (Half Man half lion) avatar- Purshraam Avatar- Rām Avatar, called ‘Bīj Ramaein’- Krishna avatar, called, Dasam Sakand (tenth chapter of Bhagvad Purana) It is interesting to know that Sarbloh Avtar was the first avtar of Akal Purkh.

  26. Islamic invasion? What Islamic invasion. I'd hardly call a couple of non-intellectuals who down vote random posts an "invasion"?! These people have been called out, challenged and refuted many times, and all these people do in return (because they have nothing left to do) is down vote a few posts. What a joke! This is a public Sikhi forum, and all are welcome. Ask, discuss, learn. But when you resort to personal attacks and down voting just for the hell of it, it shows you have no intellectual integrity and, quite frankly, you're finished.

  27. Q a) Who made the Prophet a prophet? A a) Who makes a man mad? Is it that good and higher Truth? No, but its own past actions. When someone as prophet is meant to do good to all beings, for in all he sees the Light of that Supreme truth, and instead of that, he spreads and infuses poison of hatred and evilness, how can that person can be called a prophet even? So you see, anything done in ignorance, like hatred, crime, terrorism, rapings, wars, stealing, , is not called virtue, rather sinful actions. Q b) So did Waheguru deliberately elect a deficient man to be a Prophet, if so why or did Waheguru not know the future? A b) No. Waheguru or Allah, is not so limited to make this nonsense happen. You see, this is the biggest mistake in which almost all incurr, their limited vision of that subtle and higher Truth, is tainted with their ignorance, their lower and evil qualities, to which they want the Divine to take part of their sins, instead to become aware of the perfect and total goodness of that Supreme Truth and try to become like it. Q c) Half of your forum is asking me questions and you expect me to respond to everything, I have better things to do. This is a Sikh forum you should be answering my questions on Sikhi and teaching me your ways instead of asking me things mostly. A c) Well, if half of the forum is asking you questions, then be honest and answer them to the best of your ability. The sangat here is sincere and does answer your questions, but there is a problem of which most are not aware. Let me clear what I mean, for example, when one wants to pour milk in a vessel, and the vessel is quite dirty, the milk will get spoiled and go wasted, isn´t it? In a similar way, no matter howsoever, the brothers and sisters here may try all their best to clear your so called questions, but as long as you do not vacate your mind from all preinstalled impurities and become a normal or a good human being, I am sorry to say, you will never ever understand, that also when sikhee is nothing, but universal goodness for all beings irrespective of their caste, creed or nationality, for it basically deals only with falling in love with that Supreme Truth, for the only purpose of merging and becoming one with that Universal Supreme truth, though one may give any name to that Truth. Just as the main purpose of the Light is to dispell darkness, without seeing where it falls upon, whether it is a sikh, a muslim, a christian, hindu or anybody, for spirituality deals with the spirit only, not with the physical, astral or causal limitations. The love for that Truth, is only to arise above all limitations, and become one with it, and that relation is not a collective one , but it is a personal relation, one to one with that Supreme truth, just as we come alone, and we go alone with all that implies. My only advice to you is, keep all your preconcepts aside for a while, and enjoy the beauty, the truths, the love and mercy conatined in the Bani, if only you really want to learn anything from it, and believe me, even if it impacts you positively, nobody here will will try to convert you, we all respect each one as it is, we only need to just be good human beings without ever inflicting pain on anyone. To start with, just see the praises of that Supreme Being as described right from the begining of the Bani: Ik-ōṅkār sat nām karatā purkhu nirbhau nirvair akāl mūrti ajūnī saibhang gur prasādi ॥ One Universal Creator God, Name(creative power) Is eternal and changeless Truth Creative Being Personified as Nam He has No Fear from anyone No Hatred towards anyone Image Of The Undying, Beyond Birth, Self-Existent. By the grace of the Guru(as an instructor or Teacher, who is an expert in mysteries of that Truth), He is realized within ourselves. @MuslimNeighbour , can you see the simplicity, the love, and the beauty shared by Guru Jee with all human beings, contained in the verses above, which are beyond any words to decribe . WAHEGURU.

  29. Brother Koi, it seems you have not recognized what means to be a muslim. They have been brainwashed in such a way right from their day 1 of birth, that no matter howsoever one may reason with them, they will never ever accept, for the moment they recognize how much damage and atrocities they have inflicted upon mankind, that very moment they will step back in shame for belonging to such a diabolical culture. Not that the rest of the world does not respect them for what they are, but, they themselves by harming others without any reason, they are disliked as "people".... the history is the proof, see how many absurd wars, how many killings, just in the name of such an entity, who they themselves have not seen but yet they are induced to believe, that they have to kill others....what a disgrace How can they even call themselves religious? That too, when the base of any religion is mercy, forgiveness, and tolerance towards all, irrespective of caste, color, and creed. And this is what sikhee can be proud of, we are taught that all have His Light, even in SGGS, the divine is named as Allah and Khuda, which are just names like any others, of that creative power, which we call Satnam, God, Lord, or Waheguru among so many others. What else can one want? So much respect given to the name of their divinity, yet they still thirst for blood. How can someone fall so low? For example, we all know the Sun is high in the sky, isn´t it? So what difference does it make by saying or repeating the sun is the highest in the sky? Will the sun fall down or get to a lower level by not saying so? It would be stupid, isn´t it? So if anyone says Allah hu Akbar, well that is fine, but by others not saying so, that power of Allah, God, Waheguru will not diminish, nor will ever fall down, for it is great by its own nature, and not by buttering it. Just as we see in the Bani: aapeenay aap sajeeo, apeenay racheeo Nao The sun is as it is, so is that divinity, it is great by itself , it does not make any difference to it, whether we say anything or keep quite, it will nevertheless give its Light upon all in same quantity and intensity. in a similar way, whethe we say anything or not about that supreme truth, it will not stop giving its love, forgiveness or mercy on the souls, for all souls are a part from IT, for all are as rays of that same One Sun. This is the greatness of Sikhee, it broadens one mind and makes softer our hearts, for in all is present His Noor. It is fine you are giving this guy a chance, but when Guru Sahiban themselves came on earth, and could not affect with positivity their hearts, how can any of us limited beings try to make them see their reality of evilness? They inflicted pain on THEM, so it is better to leave them alone as they are, we are not to change them in any way, except that of making them realize, that they are a part of this world, so they have to become good human beings first, and be respectful to all others, for unless one is not a good human being, one can not enter heaven. If one´s aim is to merge and become one with that Supreme truth, which is an infinite Ocean of love, mercy, and forgiveness, which means total purity, so how can we ever become one with IT, by killing and hurting others deliberately? It is utter madness. It is such a pity, how these people are madly influenced into wickedness, there has to be a deep reform and throughly cleansing in their lookout towards others. Congrats anyhow Koi for your good intentions, let us now see how does he/they respond .

Please wear a chotta dastar not a patka (those did not exist until 1970s, they are not sikh in origin or spirit) just long enough to secure your kangha and kesh, so you can tyar bar tyar just incase you need to be up and in action straight away. I saw the value of this when we had a housefire whilst we were sleeping and had to evacuate the babies with us .

  39. Guru Pyari Sikhsangat.com Jio, WahegurJiKaKhalsaWaheguruJiKeFateh. You may recall that some time ago Bhai PJS very kindly uploaded the digitised version of this great Granth on his scribd.com page. An attempt has been made to translate the work into English. I hope you will forgive the shortcomings and do Ardas that this can be continued and completed. Many thanks for reading. Vairag Shatak Raja Bharthari lived in Ujjain Nagar around two and a half thousand years ago. He was born in a high kul {lineage} who was a vidhwan pandit {scholar}. He was fair and just towards all his subjects and as such was much loved by all the parja {citizens}. His father’s name has been recorded in Rajavali as Raja Gandarbh Sann but mother’s name has been omitted and it is written that he was in fact born to a dasi {servant girl}. The raja had been married three or four times already but when he heard the kirti {praises} of a mahan sundar rajkumari {very beautiful princess}, he married her too. The name of this rani was Pingla. Her magical beauty and gunn {attributes} captivated the raja in such a way that he became her gulam {slave}. Just as the commands of Noor Jahan had a hold over Badshah Shah Jahan , this was the same scenario with raja Bharthari. Pingla feared none since the king Bharthari was under her “spell”. She wandered around sutantar {independently}, without fear, and as such fell in love with the astbal droga {stable master}. The rani had a devarr {husband’s younger brother}, who considered his elder brother raja Bharthari as a father figure and the rani as a mother. He obeyed their every order with utmost loyalty. The maharajah had given him the post of Pardan Mantri {Prime Minister}, the duties of which he carried out with great splendour. His name was Veer Vikramaditya, he is the same Mahapursh {great soul} who later came to be known as the famous Maharajah Bikramjit. The samat calendar is still used in his memory even today. Vikramditya was the first to have suspicions regarding the vibchar {adultery} of rani Pingla. After much deliberation he finally informed his brother raja of the misdeeds of rani Pingla. The raja was so besotted with Pingla that he took offence and as such reprimanded his own brother for saying such a thing. The raja went as far as to say that it is because you are my younger brother that I shall remain quiet otherwise I would have had you hanged. The raja considered his rani to be the supreme satti savitri {a lady who was the epitome of high moral character}. When Pingla found out about this confrontation she began to show even more love towards the raja. After some days she made a request to the raja, “your younger brother Vikramjit is like a son to me and I have always tried to be a mother to him but he looks at me in a lustful manner. Any other female would have succumbed to his advances by now! It is me who has evaded this terrible situation. He has made every attempt to defile me, and not only me, he has in fact destroyed the satt dharam {purity} of many women in this kingdom. It was only a few days ago that he attempted to lure the noh {daughter-in-law} of the Brahmin with the assistance of dootia {maids etc.} but she like me too is a pattibratta {faithful woman} and as such resisted his intentions. I implore you to stay alert and be very wary about such an adharmi {unscrupulous} man. I do not want you to be in any danger from him.” Upon hearing this the Maharajah took every word to be the utmost truth. Then rani Pingla called the Brahmin and said “are you aware that the Maharajah is is in my total control and if you desire your well being then follow my instructions to the full. Go to the Maharajah and make a pukar {plea}, if you don’t then I shall have you tortured!” The Brahmin knew that the raja was totally smitten by Pingla and as such would only take her word against any other. “I will obey your every command” replied the Brahmin to rani Pingla. Pingla told the Brahmin ”go to the raja’s court and make a faryad {plea}! and when he asks you what is the matter, you reply that kumar{prince} Bikramjit wants to engage in immorality with my noh {daughter-in-law} and if you are prepared to allow this than I shall leave your nagar {kingdom} and go elsewhere. I cannot stand by and allow my izatt {respect} and istri dharam {chaste} to be destroyed in this way.” “Also remember that you must not succumb to the raja in any way!” Upon hearing this the Brahmin went to see the Maharajah the very next day and cried his dilemma {which the rani taught him} with immense reality. The Maharajah filled with krodh {anger} upon hearing his words. Without padtal {investigation} the maharajah immediately ordered the des nikala {expulsion} of his younger brother from his kingdom. Bikramjit accepted his maharajah brother’s edict with love, patience, and without complain. He immediately went home and gathered his family and promptly left the kingdom. At the same time another situation occurred. One day a Brahmin arrived in the raj darbar {king’s court} and began to tell the raja that “twenty five years earlier I made a dridh sankulp {strict devotion} to do tapp {endurance} in order to appease the Devta {deity}, the devta gave me an Amar Phall {fruit that gives eternal life}. I have come here with that phall, my wife won’t eat it herself nor will she let me eat it. She says that we are poor and persistent poverty will be harder to manage. We only desire death now so that we may escape our hardships. If we eat the amar phall then we shan’t die and as a result will have to endure more hardship. That is why it is my wish that you take the amar phall so that you can continue to rule your kingdom in the most benevolent way and in return you can give us wealth which will eradicate our suffering.” Upon hearing this from the Pandit Rajah Bharthari he took the amar phall in exchange for an abundance of wealth, which pleased the Brahmin immensely. The rajah didn’t eat this fruit himself but gave it to his beloved rani Pingla. The rani thought that it would be deceitful of her to eat the fruit, so when the rajah left she summoned her lover and promptly gave him the fruit. The lover did not eat the fruit either but gave it instead to his favourite prostitute. The prostitute accepted the fruit but began to contemplate her lifestyle “I have sinned all my life, destroyed many marriages etc. If I eat this fruit and become amar {eternal} then this is all I will endure {lustful activities}. It is better that I give this fruit to the Maharajah instead, in whose raj he has given me so many pleasures.” After contemplating this with all sincerity she presented the fruit to the Maharajah. The maharajah was first stunned upon seeing the fruit but then asked the vesvah {lady of the night} where she had obtained this fruit from? Upon being interrogated by Bharthari the veshvah told the whole story truthfully “Your astbal droga {stable master} is my mitr {lover}, he gave it to me.” The raja immediately summoned the droga {stable master} and asked how he became in possession of the fruit? The drogra fell at the rajah’s feet and narrated the whole scenario of how he engaged in immorality with his rani Pingla. As soon as the Maharajah heard the whole story, he immediately filled with nafarat {hatred} of the rani and the world in general. He became fully vairag {total renunciation}. He immediately summoned the maha mantri {prime minister} and said; “look after this raj {kingdom} I am leaving. Bikramjit suffered pains owing to my decision to expel him. Call him back and place him on the throne.” As soon as he had given these instructions he immediately removed the robes that adorned his body. He covered his body with a solitary sheet as he left to join Gorakh. Maharajh Bharthari first wrote “Shingar Shatak” and during his reign wrote “Neeti Shatak” and after attaining vairag {renunciation} he wrote “Vairag Shatak” in which he describes the state of his mind. “Vairag Shatak” Granth was written in Brijj language by the great scholar Kavi Pandit Har Dyal Ji of Choonia Nagar. The Punjabi translation has been undertaken by Pandit Naryan Singh Gyani. TO BE CONTINUED WITH WAHEGURU JI'S MEHAR.........................

  40. Yes, you're supposed to wear it to bed. Khalsa is tyar bar tyar, even while asleep  Remember, this is Akal Purakh's Fauj you're joining, not some boy scout club. Ideally, you should also have other shasters close by your bed at night, like laathi and 3ft kirpan. Just move the kirpan around if it pokes you or something. You'll get used to it in a few days.

  41. I was once a student of his for a few years. Unfortunately for me, my life took a different turn and I could no longer commit to training. Would have loved to carry on though. One thing that was really awesome about him is that you could literally ask him any question regarding ideology, and he'd answer it fully. Now, you may not necessarily agree with it, but he clearly laid out his reasoning, evidence and logic, which I greatly respected ??. The thing with rumors and keyboard warriors is that, they are exactly that, and nothing more. I've always encouraged all the naysayers that, if you have an issue, go up to him and ask. It really is that simple. That's what I always did. The akhara does not "follow" anyone. It teaches anyone who respects the vidiya and will not misuse it. It is completely free from politics. Again, this is something which Gurdev Nidar Singh Ji has cleared up many times, but people still don't get it... Finally, even if you disagree with the ideology, the vidiya is proper authentic. The irony is, when he taught our community, we did not appreciate it, we vilified him completely. And now, he teaches it all over the world to many martial artists who all attest to it's greatness and authenticity, and our people still have a problem ("you're teaching non-Sikgs" etc.). Lost opportunity... Incidentally, the respect and approval Shastar Vidiya has received from the martial arts community is infinitely greater than that of gatka..

  42. Do you know how guns used to operate in those days? They were extremely slow, often you'd have to reload after every single shot. Today you have high power hand guns and machine guns with large cartridges and high rates of fire. Welcome to the 21st century.
