  2. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Guru Roop Sangat Jeo, Here is the Sri Jaap Sahib Steek by Prof. Sahib Singh. It also includes teeka of Swayiye (Sravag Sudd..) and the opening Chaupai of Sri Akaal Ustat. It is a must read, especially for those with missionary mindset as they have great regard for Prof. Sahib's work. In the foreword itself Prof. Sahib has made it absolutely clear that Sri Jaap Sahib and other banis of Sri Dasam Granth are composed by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj himself. The meanings are laid out in the 'Guru Granth Sahib Ji Darpan' style, with padd-arth (words and their .meanings) and the mool paath's exposition. Hope it is useful in some way Read on SikhSangat's Scribd page: http://www.scribd.com/doc/50778700/Prof-Sahib-Singh-Sri-Jaap-Sahib-Steek Dhanvaad, and thanks for reading!

  3. the gurus were male and belonged to a "higher" caste... they stood up for women and got rid of the belief that other castes are inferior. they put bhagats from all castes in guru granth sahib ji. it was important for someone who was of higher caste to say to people THAT EVERYONES EQUAL!! that THERE IS NO CASTE SYSTEM and it was important for them to be a Male!! because at that time female werent looked down upon like low caste people. Who was going to listen to a woman of low caste? and btw there is a female granthi cant find her video but theres a video of her where she talks about giving plants in parshaad... so punjab could be green again

  4. Here's a humble attempt at translation the opening section of Professor Sahib Singh's preface to his Jaap Sahib teeka. May Waheguru bless his das to continue to learn about the faith and develop his modest linguistic ability. I'd like to thank Laal Singh of sikhwareness.com for looking over the translation and explaining certain colloquial terms and suggesting various improvements. I'm including the original Gurmukhi text for readers. Feel free to post any suggestions for improvements:

  5. “Khalsa Aid” and their Sister Charity “Focus on Punjab” need your donations. Money raised by the Sangat for Khalsa Aid, is spent not only around the world (Albania, Turkey, Gujarat, Somalia, Kabul Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Haiti and now Japan) but their new sister Charity “Focus Punjab” concentrates solely on the Punjab, getting our poorer Sikh youngsters an education, and keeping them away from the huge drugs problem that is currently rampant in Punjab. It is possible to state exactly where you want your donation to be spent, and be safe in the knowledge that your donation will be spent as you wish, and in return, the world will see Sikhs – as givers, and the people that extended more than thoughts and sympathy and helped when, help was needed. Khalsa Aid still doesn’t have the publicity it deserves, but it has already made a huge difference across the globe. Sikh TV showed a documentary about Khalsa Aid over the weekend, the work they did in Haiti was fantastic!! It was lovely to see Jeeps with Kesri Chandeh pull up in Haiti, and for the Singhs to be greeted so well (especially as there are still muppets who see a Dastaar and freak / or think Taliban! As highlighted in the recent shootings in Sacremento California) So…. Just a small request from me to you... When you donate to Red Nose Day this Friday – Match that donation to Khalsa Aid, there is a new project for the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami victims, and your donation would allow Khalsa Aid to further their good work. They are a nonprofit organization and can only continue with our donations. Recognise all of the human race as one. - Guru Gobind Singh Ji

  6. Vaheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa Vaheguroo Jee Kee Fateh Just to correct this misquoted 'quote', Sri Maan Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Jee Khalsa Bhindranwale never said "Physical Death I do not fear, Death of Conscience is a Sure Death." He did say "The Death of The Body, I do not count, The Death of Conscience I do count" Many have misheard or mistranslated the quote from Panjabi to English. If you listen to the speech, Sant Jee says 'The Death of The Body, I do not count, The Death of Conscience I count' If you don't believe me, give me some time, i'll upload the speech extracted. Please DO NOT mistake that Sant Jee was scared of Physical Death. Vaheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa Vaheguroo Jee Kee Fateh

  9. In celebration of Hola Mohalla: Description of Hola Mohalla in 1883 “The dark standard (Nishan Sahib) of the Anandpur Gurdwara, accompanied by Nihangs clad in dark blue clothes and conical head-dresses encircled with steel quoits, is specially worthy of notice. Many of the Nihangs are mounted and rush wildly about, frantically gesticulating and shouting, and bearing themselves as if engaged in defending their standard against a foe. Now and then, a deep toned chant (Jaikara) rises from one of the groups, singing the praises of their Guru.” - Punjab Gazetteer, Hoshiarpur Punjab (Punjab Government, 1883)

  15. Thanks for all the wonderful comments. I think I am going to try and find some social groups to get her involved with and see if the problem just disappears. I stay so busy I forget that she can get lonely, especially since she is so far removed from the huge desi community she grew up in. She is a good girl, but she is beginning to realize that my skin color makes that old type of community hard to get out here. 3HO is not an option for me, I have serious problems with it and I will leave it at that. I was raised in the church, and it really isn't all bad. It has some problems, but I still think it does more good than almost any organization in the world. The problem is that I just don't believe in its tenets. Catholicism ask you to believe a whole slew of things... Sikhism ask you to believe in one God, working hard, and sharing with the less fortunate. I also do have problems with the sex abuse scandal, its pretty horrific, but some of the most Godly men I have ever known have been priest. I will stay the course, and I fill find a way to help her. Its kind of my duty as her husband. Thanks everyone! Fateh!

  17. Yeah its pendu behavior. But does this pendu mentality exist in the west (in the so called educated people)? Knowing your origin and being proud of it is two different things and being proud of it is very much caste behavior. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji Maharaj gave the Sikhs a new ethnic identity. The Khalsa is a culture, language, and a religion that does not discriminate against anyone. Can you say the jatts don't discriminate against anyone? Plus can you claim to be jatt and Sikh? Provide the ang so the Bani can be looked at by everyone.

  18. The sky is falling.......the sky is falling..... The public should follow Gurmat because it is Guru's Hukam. No one should be "frightened" into following Gurmat. The tactic of Gurmat is not hype and fright, but realization. Total world population is less than 7 billion as of most estimates, and not what he stated.

  19. What about the ground realities of many people who are Khalsa (Amritdhari) and yet still latch on to caste identity? So we are talking the majority from back home. How many of our parents do this. This has gone beyond talks along idealistic notions now. That simply hasn't worked in Sikh society frankly. How long have we had to sort this out amicably. There probably is no other option left other than a ground level shake up. And yes, it probably will be bloody and messy, This is exactly what people predicted throughout all of the long years of a denial of widespread casteism taking place amongst us. Some dark hearted dogs still try the denial game now. The people who need condemning in all this are the 'Sikhs' who've created some man made hierarchy and have tried to sit on some imaginary apex looking down on, and frankly treating those they perceive as beneath them as a lesser species, not worthy of respect. If a Panjabi has any backbone, he will resist this, regardless of his caste, religion etc.

  20. Rana's ok but he suits the over censored approach of sangat tv anyway. Let's see if the competition of these 2 channels produce better quality presenters. Sikh tv on the other hand need to buck up, they're cashing in on gagandip singh's death, but once that's over they've nothing much to offer. I think we'll be just left with Sikh Channel and Sangat Tv and the competitive streak should help produce better quality of programmes.

  22. If there is any place in India where so called 'lower castes' are going to assert themselves and fight discrimination, you just know it's going to be Panjab. Land of the gareeb niwas. Here's to change - hopefully towards a flatter, less hierarchical society. We've been ignoring the flagrant hypocrisy regarding our egalitarian principles for too long. Seeing as we wont willingly face up to this, I guess being forced to is the only other option. lol Let chammars and jats fight until they learn to treat each other as equals.

  23. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, Message to Admin; The original link is no longer online but I can try to get a copy of letter and scan it in for my brothers and sisters who question it's credibility. If you watch 847 now you can see Rana and Avtar Singh doing a live show that use to be on Sikh Channel called miri piri at the exact same time (this is no coincidence). I'm fully aware Sikh Channel are not saints but is this what our beautiful guru khalsa panth has come to? Will they continue competing with each other by playing dirty politics and trying to get a upper hand (while our fellow sikhs continue converting to other religions and cults). All these old wedge, power hungry, useless political fools who have been fighting with each other over the last 27 years are exploiting these channels. These very people claimed (live on air) that they are very loyal to Sikh Channel for the last 2 years and simply switched to Sangat TV on their first live show. I have very close inside links with both Sikh Channel and Sangat Tv and brothers and sisters don't be fooled thinking they have Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Sikhi at interest. Sikhi will never grow if Sikh's cannot learn to love and respect each other. Please forgive me in advance if any offence taken. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.

  25. Sat Sri Akal: Prophet is one who prophesizes as per the root word indicates. However, it seems that through vast misuse, it has begun to mean those who are spiritually enlightened and leaders/founders of faiths. Muhammed Sahib is the Guru of the Muslims. He laid down the religious philosophy, the code of conduct and taught the Muslims the way to a religious life through Islam through the Qua'ran and indirectly through the Hadiths (as both these resources are quoted by Muslims in reference to proper Muslim conduct aka. the Sharia). Jesus within the context of Islam is given very high praise and saw Jesus as a man of God, with the Prophet Muhammed only in disagreement to the Trinity that the Christians subscribe to in the Qua'ran. Hence the disagreement with calling Jesus the Son of God. But neither does Muhammed ever call himself the Last Prophet either...this is only found in the introductory pages of the Qua'ran and is written as a background to the life of the Prophet by a tertiary source...in stark contrast to the Qua'ran body proper, which is dictation from the Prophet himself and is in the first person. The laws of the Sharia are drawn up from two primary sources...the Qua'ran (The Sacred Text) and the Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammed). This is somewhat in parallel to Sikhism, in which the Rehat is also drawn up from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Dasam Granth Sahib (the Sacred Word) and historical Rehat Maryadas that are proported to be from the mouth of the Dasm Patshah (sayings of the Guru). Therefore, I cannot agree with the statement from Muslim Reza Aslan. The Qua'ran, like the Guru Granth Sahib in the use of the word Sikh, uses the word Muslim and Islam (both which mean surrender to the Will of the Almighty) throughout the Qua'ran and deems it the path that is described by Muhammed Sahib. The Qua'ran is quite explicit and specific on the differentiation of the Muslims from the others such as the Pagans, the Jews and the Christian. Bhul Chuk Maaf.

  26. Beloved Veer, yes because it is easy to support every word of the Quaran as the word of Muhammed when it belittles him. Here is a quote from a Muslim Reza Aslan's, he wrote a book, No god but God. "We have this idea somehow that Prophets invent religion, that Jesus invented Christianity or that Muhammed invented Islam, nothing could be further from the Truth. What Prophets do is that they take the social, the economical and the political milieu in which they live and they reshape it and they recast it. They don't talk about the future they talk about the present. Its the Prophets followers who then take those ideals, take those words and turn it into religion and its often the case that it has far more to do with their own ideas, their own biases then it does with what the prophet said or did."

Even if you were independent invaders from outside will come in and try to change the minds of the weak. Eg: If you religion does not allow you to cut your hair well ours does. Make the Khalsa Nation Strong does not matter in which country you are in. Even if you are in independent Khalistan.

  32. Also another thing I would like to add. Show me the even the most full fledged Amritdhari Sikh(s) and look at their family tree, and it will certainly be all marriage unions among people of the same "background"...you will come to realize that this is so deep rooted that it's practically impossible to uproot. We need to debahminize it, that is the only solution. Yet you lokh are still referring to it as "caste" even after my initial post. You who refer to it as caste are are part of the problem and clearly not part of the solution. Furthermore refer to Dasam Granth bani of our 10th guru where he talks about his Bedi clan and the origins of his tribe. Guru ji was clearly capable to distinguish the difference between caste and ethnic tribe that many of you people are having such a hard time to grasp.

  33. from 118 please refer to the index last link. http://www.sridasam.org/dasam?Action=Page&p=118 http://www.searchgurbani.com/dasam_granth/page/118 http://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Bachitar_Natak_index I agree there are ugly undertones that need to be dealt with.. but it certainly isn't a "technical escape" as you put it. DYNASTY and CLAN do not denote CASTE. According to the WEBSTER’S NEW WORLD DICTONAY, the meaning of these three words are as under – CASTE Any of the hereditary classes of a segregated System, based on birth, wealth, trade, status in both religious and social set up of Hindus. DYNASTY A succession of rulers, who are members of the same family. CLAN A group of families claiming descent, from a common ancestor. MOST IMPORTANT TO NOTE - Kshatriyya is the warrior and the ruling caste of Hindus. Suraj Bunse or Raghubunse is Dynasty, to which Rajas Raghu, Aj, Dasrath, Sri Ram Chander, Luv, Kush and their descendents belonged. Baidis and Sodhis are the clans of the Raghubunse Dynasty, NOT CASTES.

Of course no-one should be frightened or threatened into following Gurmat, but if people are not taking Gurmat seriously when it could be the way towards salvation, then people should know and should be told.

First of all communists hate sikhism with a vengeance we are the only religion that will stand between them and total control of the Sikh community particularly groups like the Indian workers association in London All of the communists I have met are half mad control freaks and alcoholics to boot Catholicism is a massive step back from sikhism although as a Sikh you are free to follow any religion

  37. Whilst I can't claim to be an expert on sikhism or catholocism, your comments on the Catholic faith indicate a very flippant attitude to one of the World's great religions. There are theological reasons as to why the leadership of the catholic faith does not allow the ordination of women as priests (look up Catechism # 1577)...and I guess at a very basic level, all the Gurus were male and I guess that tells us something too. How many female Sikh granthis have you met in West London?? And secondly, to describe child abuse by priests as having been with 'the tacit approval and knowledge from the very top' is deeply offensive and not becoming of a Sikh. It was only a few weeks ago that a Sikh granthi was convicted of sexual abuse in this country. Treat other faiths with the respect that you would want them to show your faith.

  38. Instead of asking random people on the net discuss with your wife and also both speak to your local giani or learned sikh at the gurdwara. Sorry if i sound out of order but just read posts on this forum, most are from teenagers/twenty somethings who are not very clued up. Im not saying im wise i aint im just giving my personal advice, i am married to someone who is from non sikh background. I take both my kids gurdwara and they speak punjabi and have knowledge of sikhi for their age. End of the day you can only bring your kids up best you can. No parent wants their kids to not be sucessful and follow what you have instilled in them spritually but they will make their own mind up. Most on this forum may disagree but you need to raise your kids as good humans firstly, then sikh or what ever religon. E.g. you were not raised as a sikh but found sikhi. Important thing is faith in god. Also community is not religous based, im sure if you put yourselves out there people will embrace, well thats my experience, maybe there will be some who dont but there will be some who do.
