  1. This is a benti to everyone please to address this to your local Gurdwara . I have a nut allery, and latey the Gurdwara have been putting nuts into the Keer without informing the Sangat. This may be a small issue, but yesterday my daughter also got an allergy and its quite alarming. If this happened in a restaurant they would be sued in an instant. If there is no sign or indication to say that there are nuts etc in the Langar. This needs to be addressed to the committee, as all Gurdwara have people from different ethic backgrounds having Langar, and we don't want one to have an allergy to something and suing the Gurdwara. 5. This is a grave issue. Gurdwara matrimonials need to be monitored, there is a lot of hate being spread against turbans from female sikhs sections in many gurdwaras around West London, and possibly others as well. Please keep a vigilant eye, we cannot let this hate happen in sacred Gurdwaras. Gurdwara is not the place for turban to be disrespected, why are we letting this happen on such a large scale? Gurdwara is about peace and love, and also we need to promote this respect for turban among punjabis and beyond. How is there so much hate for turban in gurdwara lists? This will really really badly effect preserving the turban in our community if we don;t do something, anything! This is beadbi to the grandest scale!

  6. The biggest problem with us is that we think others are like us too. Wake up Khalsa jee, others are NOT like us. We have a Pooran SatGuru who gave us character, who taught us to be just even in times of strife. Can the others look up their history and say the same about those they worship? Wake up, don't expect others to have your level of deen-imaan, your kind of integrity, your type of Khalsaaee kadar-keemat. We have our Gurdev Pita jee Sahib-E-Kamaal Sri Guru Gobind Singh Jee Maharaj, the one and only personality on this planet who did bhagti in bir rass. Anyone else qualifies? NO! Wake up, no one else has the sense of belonging the way we do, we belong only to our Gurdev Pita jee. Who do others belong to? Whose tokens of love do they carry the way we carry our kakaars? We are blessed with a saroop because we carry a responsibility. Does anyone else qualify? NO! Wake up! Stop trusting just about anyone because they are nice from time to time. Stop expecting others to be the way you are because you are a different breed since you are to abide by a mandatory norm. When Dasmesh Pita jee said that Khalsa is to stay niyaara, it also means that no one else is like the Khalsa. No one else has the kind of character that Khalsa has, no one else has deen-imaan, kadar-keemat the way Khalsa does, no one else has a satkaarjog saroop that Khalsa has. All these people around you are under NO obligation to be the best human beings, but you blessed Khalsas will have the sweet burden of that Guru-given duty on your head till you die. Wake up! Love all, trust a few, but have no expectations from anyone Khalsa jee, because Khalsa lives a life of commitment to our SatGuru Patshah jee, others tend to live a life they at times find aimless and can't define even themselves. Wake up! There is way we are expected to live in society, and that was given to us by our param pyaare SatGuru Patshah jee long before these man-made handwritten laws were created or implemented. I am not asking you to look down upon anyone, or to hate anyone, or to dislike anyone, or to degrade or put anyone down. I am only begging you to please be niyaare in every aspect of your lifestyle. And I am only rebuking myself to stand up and be who and what I am, NOT who and what the world wants to see me as. - Mehtab Singh

  7. Gurfateh, My local Gurdwara are seeking to start up classes for Children’s self defence/martial arts and are looking for instructors who will act as role models first i.e. Gursikhs with the martial arts aspect following on. We believe having an amritdhari instructor will give the kids a role model to look up to and aspire to. The intention being that they will learn sikhi principles along with the self confidence not only to look after themselves and others but also the confidence in the sikhi saroop. We are looking for recommendations of such gursikhs in and around the Birmingham area, so Wolverhampton, Walsall etc are all within easy commute. I would appreciate your help and assistance. Bhul chuk marf.

  11. (I) DIVALI AND GURBANI. The most commonly sung and quoted Gurbani verses relating to Divali are derived from Bhai Gurdas ji’s // 19 Pauree 6. Sikh ragees sing this pauree and explain it as evidence that Divali and the lighting of lamps is to be celebrated as an authentic Sikh practice. For a full understanding, the entire pauree is quoted below. An explanation of the pauree follows. Divali Dee Rat Deevay Baleean. Tarey Jaat Snaat Ambar Bhaleean. Fullan Dee Bagaat, Chun Chun Chaleean. Teerath Jatee Jaat Nain Nihalean Har Chandauree Jhaat Vasae Uchaleean. Gurmukh Sukh Fal Dat Shabad Smaleean. Keen readers of Gurbanee know that the main message of a shabad is encapsulated in the Rahao line. This is the generic rule of the five thousand plus shabads that are written by the Guru Sahibs and Bhagat Sahibs in the Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj (GGS). The writings of Bhai Gurdas Ji do not follow such a practice. Bhai ji does not use Rahao in any of his 912 paurees (in 40 vaars), 672 Kabits and 3 swayeas. In all his writings, his main message is always contained in the final verse of the pauree, kabit or swayea. The first five lines of every pauree are illustrations / explanations for the real message which is provided in the final / concluding line. A translation of the above pauree is as follows: The lamps of the night of Divali eventually burn out. The stars of the night sky stop sparkling when dawn comes. The beauty of the orchard disappears as the flowers are picked. The gaiety of the place of pilgrimage dies when the crowds leave. Life- even as bestowed by God- is temporary; settled and then destructed. Yet, the Gurmukh is blessed with the fruit of permanent joy through his Immersion in the Shabad. The meaning of this pauree is therefore as follows: A Gurmukh seeks bliss from the Shabad. The joy that comes from the Shabad is not as temporary as the lamps that burn on Divali night, the star-lit night skies, and the beautiful sights of the blooming orchard, the joyous atmosphere of the places of pilgrimages or of human life itself. Guru Arjan Dev Ji Maharaaj bestowed the title of Gurbanee dee Kunjee (the key to understanding Gurbanee) to Bhai Ji’s writings. In other words, understanding Bhai Gurdas provides one the key to unlock the treasures of the GGS. Guru Arjan Sahib recognized him as an interpreter par excellence of Gurbanee. As is the case with all of Bhai Ji’s writings, he is extolling the Sikh to link spiritually with the Shabad – by which he means the GGS and all the messages that are contained therein. This pauree is written to give inspiration to the Sikh to connect with the Shabad by virtue of the permanence of the joy that comes as a result. Now, to use the first line of this pauree – Divalee Dee Raat Divey Baleean – as Gurbanee justification for Sikhs to light lamps (or otherwise celebrate) the Divali night is ignorance – feigned or genuine. If that is the case then gazing the stars (the second illustration of temporariness in line two) can also be argued to be a call by Bhai Gurdas Ji for Sikhs to worship the planets. On the same account, then planting orchards and going for teerath yatra or pilgrimages (as mentioned in lines 3 and 4) is also recommended Sikh spiritual practice. Each of the four events in each of the four lines are examples / illustrations used by Bhai Ji to make a concluding point regarding a particular characteristic (permanence of the joy) of the Shabad. This characteristic of the Shabad is contrasted with characteristics of the four events. Surely then, it would be highly disingenuous to suggest that the events being contrasted are acceptable as Sikh practice...including the lighting of lamps.

  13. From what we have learned in the Sangat of Gursikhs, Matha-tek constitutes the following: 1. Walk into Guru-Darbar, with utmost humility, wearing Gurmukhi Baana. It is lack of fear and respect for Guru Sahib to not wear Baana in Guru Sahib's Darbar. Similarly, to is extremely awkward to not wear a Hazooria when coming to the Darbar. Matha-tek is not complete without Hazooria. 2. While walking towards, Guru Sahib, the eyes should be fixed upon Guru Sahib or half closed and focused towards the floor in front of Guru Sahib. 3. If one is wearing a shawl or loyee, then it should be opened from front, so that the Shasters (weapons) that Gursikh is wearing, are visible to Guru Sahib. 4. With humility, stand in front of Guru Sahib and do a short Ardaas. 5. At the conclusion of the Ardaas, do Matha-tek, get up and say Fateh to Guru Sahib, by facing Guru Sahib alone. 6. After saying Fateh to Guru Sahib, turn on right (or left) and glancing (having Darshan) of Sangat, say Fateh to Sangat. Then turn on the other side and say Fateh to Sangat on that side, while having Darshan. 7. Then find a spot and with humility, fear and love of Guru Sahib and Sangat, sit there cross-legged. Expanding on the point 5 above, the following should be kept in mind, while Matha-tek. 1. With both hands folded, hold your Hazooria within your hands. 2. At least 9 Angs (organs) of the body must touch the ground - 2 Hands, Forehead, 2 elbows, 2 knees and 2 feet. 3. The hands should be extended as much as possible, straight ahead and they should stay folded with Hazooria within them. 4. The forehead should be touching the ground. 5. The bottom (butts) must rest on the heel of the feet. The feet should be flat on the ground in such way that the front (upper side of the feet) should be lying flat on the ground. Some people have their bottom sticking up in the sky; this is not respectable. When a person is in Matha-tek Position, he should be totally shrinked towards the ground. 6. While in this position, which is also called Anjuli in Gurmat language, it is a great idea to ask for Naam, through some Gurbani Pankiti e.g. "Phirat Phirat Prabh aaiya, Pariya tau Sharnaae||". Gurmukhi way of Matha Tek - Feet are resting on the ground and notice how the body is totally submissive by being close to the ground, as much as possible: In the picture below, notice the Feet are not resting on the ground and butt not resting on heels; how awkward it looks. Of course the main thing is Bhaavnee and love but Izhaar-e-Muhabbat is also important. While Adab (respect) is important but Izhaar-e-Adab is also important. Some brothers and sisters only Matha-tek to Guru Sahib and totally ignore the Sangat by not saying Fateh to Sangat. Our tradition is to to say Fateh to Guru Sahib and also to acknowledge Sangat by saying Fateh. Bhul chuk dee Maafi jee. Guru Sahib knows the best. Kulbir Singh

  16. Surrey, BC, Canada (November 12, 2012)– Surrey, British Columbia is the city in North America with the largest Sikh population. Over one third of Surrey is Sikh and Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara is the central Gurdwara in the city. Elections for the Gurdwara are to be held on December 16 and the nominations for slates are due on November 16. In 2009, a Sikh youth slate unseated a so-called “Moderate Sikh” committee. The 2009 election was a watershed moment for the Sikh community in British Columbia. The moderate committee oversaw unprecedented decay and anti-Sikh activity at the Gurdwara. The Sikh youth committee led by Bhai Bikramjit Singh has overseen three years of dynamic growth for the Gurdwara with unprecedented accomplishments. The weekly Sunday night youth darbar, regular youth camps along with constant engagement with the youth are only part of the impressive legacy left by the outgoing committee. However, internal politics and a desire for power are threatening the progress at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara and may open the door for the “Moderate Sikh” group to return to power. Over the past two months, discussions have been had over the composition of the next committee. In order to set an example about not holding onto power, the current committee members have pledged to not seek re-election. A new committee is being chosen but personality clashes and egos threaten the unity of the Sikh youth movement. Certain nefarious figures in the community are plotting a division in the Sikh youth camp, or rather, the appearance of division, which may seal the return of the “Moderate Sikhs” to power. It is very possible that shortsightedness and a lack of leadership may lead to multiple committees running under the “Sikh Youth” banner, thus confusing the community and leading to a tragic setback for the Gurdwara. Sangat members are urging the involved parties to put aside their egos and personal differences and form a united slate that is focused on carrying on the impressive accomplishments of the current committee. http://www.sikh24.com/2012/11/internal-politics-threaten-progress-at-guru-nanak-sikh-gurdwara/#.UKF3LmHybSc

  18. Now, I think, would be a really good time for we Sikhs to launch a campaign against the BBC. Now that the BBC is on its knees with everyone seeing for the first time how it isn't the brilliant organisation they were conditioned into believing it was. Now that the media, the public and the politicians all want to see the end of the corrupt BBC wouldn't it be the perfect time to make the wider public aware of our own grievances ? The rest of the media is, at the present time, actively looking for stories of public miscontent with the BBC. Previously, the BBC has arrogantly ignored all letters of concern by Sikhs. Today, the BBC is begging at the knees for mercy......it is in no position to be arrogant. Therefore, its time for some Sikh organisation to launch a campaign along these lines : For the most part the voice of the BBC, when it came to Sikh rights, was a man called Mark Tully. That man was given India's highest honour for "services to the nation". Services to the nation ? How does the BBC explain that ? How does a man that was supposed to present the facts to the British people, who paid his wages, for the benefit of the British people get honoured by the country he was supposed to be unbiased about for 'services to the nation' ? Now, most the BBC's news coverage of events in India are written and presented by representatives of the majority community in India. Despite having one of the largest south Asian communities in the world in the UK, the BBC have decided that it prefers Indians of Bombay and Delhi to be its ears and mouth in India. These are the same people who are inherently conditioned into believing that what happened to Sikhs in 1984 was a 'riot' and that Sikhs were murdering thousands of Hindus pre-1984 and then ran to hide in the Golden Temple. As silly as that sounds that is actually the sum of the understanding held by the BBC's journalists in India. Can you imagine if the BBC wanted to do a piece about the gas chambers at Autswicht. Would the BBC think it was wise to use a local German member of the nazi party as its reporter for the piece ? As recent news stories about Sikhs have demonstrated, the BBC is not fit for purpose. This dirty, filthy biased drain on our financial resources is on its knees. Its time to kick the living daylight out of it. In normal times, our concerns would be ignored by all. At the moment, however, everyone and his dog would be interested in our beef with the BBC. I mentioned in the Brar news story a few months ago how the Met Police should learn a lesson from all of this, i.e. the fact that when one associated oneself with the Indians the dirt and filthy smell tends to rub off on oneself. The Met found that out the hard way. The BBC will find that out too.

  30. **IMPORTANT PLEASE SHARE *** AKAL THAKT DECISION ** DHUNDA** CLARIFICATION ON DHUNDA ISSUE. **FROM: United Sikh Youth Bodies UK** Over the past week, we have seen a lot of talk about Sarabjit Singh Dhunda. Unfortunately there has been a lot of very good people, with good intentions caught up in the middle. This guy is charismatic and his debates at face-value seem very convincing and heartfelt. But senior Gursikhs from all Jathebandhis etc can clearly see through him and know his true divisive intentions. We as a Quom have still not come to terms with unspeakable atrocities at the hands of the Government of India (GOI). Justice is a far dream, but a dream that can only be achieved through unity and mutual respect. A divided Quom is a helpless Quoum, Dhunda & Co. know this, and have been deliberately sent to create divisions in the UK. The GOI want large scale disruptions in Gurdwaras, they want Dastars being disrespected in our Gurdwaras, so they can then use the videos to show Khalistani Sikhs as extremists. This is their agenda. Understanding this, large scale protests have been called off by all youth groups, until there was clarity from Sri Akal Thakt Sahib. Today, Sri Akal Thakt Sahib have announced that Dhunda is to be banned from Gurdwara stages. Singh Sabha ,Southall have respected this and stopped his talks from today, a honourable decision. There are topics regarding Sri Dasam Bani etc that some Sikhs have mixed views on, hence we support Akal Thakt’s long-standing decision to ban these from discussion in public. Sarabjit Singh Dhunda, Inder Ghagga, Darshan Ragi have been invited on numerous occasions to discuss these issues in a diplomatic, sensible and constructive way with senior scholars behind closed doors. But they have never accepted this; instead they go out to divide the moderate Sikh in Gurdwaras or by making disrespectful videos. Again if any Sikh who wants to discuss the Banis of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, please contact Sewa.Support@hotmail.com, senior Gursikhs will welcome an in-depth discussion behind closed doors, in a respectful and constructive manner. 31. SIKH FEDERATION WELCOME END TO £280M A YEAR FINANCIAL AID TO INDIA The Sikh Federation (UK) has been campaigning for many years for the UK Government to end financial aid to India. Today the UK Government announced that aid to India will come to an end. Although all existing financial grants will be honoured, the UK will not sign off any new programmes from now on. Last year the UK gave India about £250m in bilateral aid as well as £29m in technical co-operation. Until last year, when it was overtaken by Ethiopia, India was the biggest recipient of bilateral aid from the UK. India is now the third largest investor in the UK and the largest market for British goods outside the EU. But the UK's support for India and no support whatsoever for Punjab has been a cause of concern for British Sikh taxpayers for many years that the Sikh Federation (UK) has been discussing with the Department for International Development. A spokesman for the Federation said: ‘Today’s announcement by the International Development Secretary, Justine Greening, that the existing development aid to India will be stopped is an excellent first step.’ ‘We have campaigned for this for many years and last communicated with the Minister on this issue only a matter of weeks ago. We made a further written request at the start of this week.’ ‘Our concern is the Punjab needs direct development aid from foreign governments, like the UK, as it is neglected by those in Delhi to tackle a host of acute problems linked to the environment, neglect of rural areas, drug abuse and political change.’ ‘This financial aid should not be given to the Indian State or the Punjab State government, but to non-governmental organisations working in Punjab. However, the existing aid from the UK was being pumped into five other Indian states for many years and also money was not reaching those most in need.’ Aid to India has only been picked up as an issue by the wider UK public, as well as many MPs in the last couple of years with the economic downturn. Many believed that the UK should not be giving money to a country which has a multi-million pound space programme. Ministers have defended the level of financial help in the past on the basis of the extreme poverty that remains in rural areas and historical colonial ties between the two countries. Save the Children said "We agree that in the longer term, aid to India should be phased out”, but the UK should support non-government organisations. Labour MP Keith Vaz, was unhappy on hearing the announcement and wants the UK Government to reassure its Indian counterpart that their bilateral relationship was still a priority. War on Want, which campaigns to end global poverty, said financial support needed to be "smarter" and geared towards supporting "progressive movements" capable of bringing about political change and tackling growing inequality.

  34. No I think a financial banking system is at the heart of the miri puri concept of Sikhism. Sikhs need to be active in localised, national and international politics and aswell personal religious affairs. Daswaand wasnt created out of no where it was an essential religious tax to run the affairs of the state and its a fair tax as opposed to Islamic jizya to non-muslims and christian-judaic usery/interest tax which is currently plunging the world in crisis greed and destruction. Guru hargobind Sahib Ji's genius was to take the fight on a political and military level so Sikhs were self sufficient and relied on their own defence to safeguard a just society based on Sikh teachings and concepts. However the critics will always bark they have done always in Sikh history and they will be the enemies who will want military action against the Sikhs as they have done so in the past because greed, envious and jealously will come in their minds instead of trying to uplift their own people the right way. Look at Libya it was self sufficient before Gaddafi was toppled, and its people were free without debt because of Gaddafi's system of governance did not allowed Rothschild jewish owned banks into the country to have a financial hold over its government. His mistake was to try and setup a currency based on the gold standard which would have lifted African nations out of European christian-Judaic debt and hegemony western nations have had since 16th century and plunged the western world in more economic turmoil. So the western nations saw as it a direct threat to their economic well being and attacked him using a pretext of human rights abuses in bengazi when they were actually islamist Al-aeqda jihadi salafist khalifat gangs and other nationalist separatists trying to split libya up for their own interests. Similarly Indira gandhi took over the Sikh bank to try and suppress the Sikh aspirations for political independence from Brahminwad Indian hegemonic grip over their affairs of the Sikh nation who were ment to be autonomous as promised by nehru in 1946. The sooner the Sikhs create their own banking system the better it will be in the longer term also short term charitable goals will also be accomplished this way.

  35. I don't think your Kanga getting wet should matter much. If you take a shower, your Kanga is in your Kes beneath your keski. Change your Keski after your shower, if wet. I would recommend a separate gatra and Kirpan for ishnaan... as getting your kirpan wet, damages the sheath from the inside...and after some time the kirpan will not fit in it tightly enough. Whilst Kesi-ishnaan, (if under the shower) tie the gatra onto your waist. If your Kanga has a long looped 'dori' (thick thread?)...you can wear it on your neck. If you've got no dori on it...attach the Kanga onto your gatra...with the gatra looping through the teeth of the Kanga. Like I said, having a separate Gatra-Kirpan for your ishnaan is beneficial. After Kesi Ishnaan...you can leave that gatra to dry and put on the other one. Do take care, that if the Kirpan is wet, take it out of the sheath and let them both dry up.

  37. Let me add some more ways of matha tek here. I dont know which one is the perfect way(depends on individuals sharda). Our Santheya teacher explains 3 different ways of it. 1. Ashtaang Bandna ( the way Consciousness veerji explained, touching ur forehead and 8 other angs) 2. Dandaut Bandna ( laying flat before Guruji) 3. Matha Tek in Bir aasan ( As Sant Jarnail Singh Ji used to do and most of the taksali Singhs do) Also they told that ur palms should be facing the ground, imagining as if u r touching the feet of Guru Sahib.

  38. "The technique of surrender" can definitely differ, and it will have no effect on wether you achieve mukti or not. To say otherwise is complete nonsense, and borderline manmat. Unless there is some clear rehatnama that says otherwise, the 'technique' stated above is based on the opinions of the poster and/or the group of individuals he does sangat with. I feel it can be seen as divisive to make a blanket statement and say this is the gurmat way, making any other way manmat.

  39. Spot on. Men should stay out of this issue without a doubt. Why? It will appear as if the men-folk are dictating how women should dress, i.e. an accusation levelled at Muslims about how they keep their women down apparently. It will give further credence to the inaccurate assertion that orthodox Sikhi is male dominated and controlled, with Sikh women have little or no say. We all know our elder ladies aren't shrinking violets when it comes to speaking up, so they should sort this issue out amongst the ladies.

  41. Fateh. I came across the following transalation from the teeka today and needed some help: ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰਾਵਣਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਤਾ ਲਾਜੀਅਹਿ ॥ They, who go to enjoy other man's women, they alone shall suffer shame. My question is specifically related to this: ਯਥਾ-ਪੋਤਾਲੋ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਰੈ ਪਰਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰਤਾ ਮਾਸ॥ ਥੰਮਾ ਨਾਲ ਲਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪਾਸ॥ First, what does ਯਥਾ mean and, secondly, are the words that follow from gurbani (ਪੋਤਾਲੋ ਪਤਿ ਊਤਰੈ ਪਰਤ੍ਰਿਅ...) because I couldnt find them anywhere on any gurbani search engine. If they're not from Gurbani where are they from? Thanks. Thanks for all your help.

  42. Source: http://www.vancouver...9454/story.html In defence of the rights of others Harjit Sajjan found military service to be the best way to fulfil the requirements of his religion BY DAPHNE BRAMHAM,VANCOUVER SUN SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 Above: Lt Col Harjit Singh Sajjan. It was during his first deployment to Afghanistan in 2006 that Harjit Sajjan distinguished himself. A major in the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own), Sajjan took time off from his full-time job in the Vancouver police department’s gang squad to join the 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group in Kandahar. His job was as liaison officer to the Afghan police. Although he’d been in dangerous situations before in Bosnia and had even been wounded there, Sajjan was assured Kandahar was safe and far from the fighting. It was anything but. “People were turning to the Taliban because of the corruption, and we couldn’t defend that,” he says. “That stirred the hornets’ nest. There were about 40 of us and we were getting hit every day.” He and his team not only learned of the Taliban insurgency, they discovered every single enemy defensive position. “I didn’t know what counter-insurgency was until I got there. But when soldiers’ lives are on the line, you learn very quickly.” Speaking to village elders, Sajjan drew on his childhood experiences in Punjab and used his first language of Punjabi, which is similar enough to be understood by Urdu-speaking Afghans. Village elders began to tell him how the young men and boys were turning to the Taliban, who promised to end widespread corruption. “It was kind of like when I was working on the gang squad. People were telling me, ‘My son won’t listen to me. But I know he’s working for the Taliban.’” Sajjan went to Canadian Maj.-Gen. David Fraser, who was heading NATO’s regional command, and told him what they’d found. Fraser was so impressed with the major that he asked for his help in planning a major offensive west of Kandahar. Operation Medusa began on Sept. 2, 2006, went on for 15 days and involved more than 5,000 NATO troops. Four soldiers under Sajjan’s command died. Eight other Canadians were killed during the operation, along with 14 British troops who were killed in a plane crash. “We knew it would be a very tough fight,” said Sajjan, who is reluctant to talk about his contribution because he feels responsible for the Canadian deaths. (In fact, Sajjan was reluctant to be interviewed at all. “I’m just one of many. You should see my soldiers. They’re the real rock stars.”) But Fraser saw it differently. In his written evaluation of Sajjan’s performance, Fraser described him as “nothing short of brilliant.” He went on to use words like “fearless, smart and personable” with “outstanding and rare potential.” In another evaluation, Sajjan was described as having shown “remarkable personal courage … often working in the face of the enemy to collect data and confirm his suspicions and placing himself almost daily in situations of grave personal risk.” Career change Sajjan admits now that he didn’t decompress properly after that first of three deployments in Afghanistan. Operation Medusa had barely ended and he was on the flight home. He’d promised his wife, Kuljit, that after two extensions of what was to have been a six-month deployment, he’d be home on that day. Soon after returning from Afghanistan, Sajjan quit the VPD. Since then, he’s continued as a reservist and started a consulting business. He teaches military personnel in Canada and the United States about how to gather information in difficult places like Afghanistan. In 2011, Sajjan went back to Afghanistan as a special adviser to U.S. Lt.-Gen. James Terry, who is now commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force joint command in Afghanistan. “It’s ironic,” he says. “There I was advising the top generals, and the U.S. army doesn’t allow Sikhs (in turbans) to join.” Sajjan came back to Canada in April 2011 and, last September, was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of the B.C. Regiment, a reserve unit. He is the first Sikh to head a Canadian regiment as commanding officer. Humble beginnings Harjit Sajjan was born in Bombeli, a small village in India’s Punjab. There were no proper toilets in the village. His pet was a black ox that once used its massive horn to pick Sajjan’s sister up and toss her out of the way when she was teasing her brother. Sajjan was only two when his father, a police officer with a promising career, left for Canada in search of better opportunities. It was four years before his father returned. But in 1976, he collected his wife, daughter and son and brought them to Vancouver. Sajjan remembers “the total sadness” he felt when he arrived. Not only had he lost the freedom to roam the family’s small farm, and the warmth of a village where everybody knew everyone else, but Sajjan only spoke Punjabi. “My sister and I were constantly crying and I remember my Mom finally slapping me and saying, ‘You’re not going back’.” He remembers the racism, going to the mall with his family and people swearing at them. “It was just a part of life. But at school, I didn’t have that issue. I played sports.” By 16, Sajjan knew he was travelling in the wrong circles. Among his classmates was Bindi Johal, the notorious drug lord and gangster murdered in 1998, and others who Sajjan later helped arrest. Sajjan chose another path. He decided to become a baptized Sikh. Among other things, it meant no alcohol, no cutting his hair, wearing a turban, a silver bracelet and carrying a kirpan, the small ceremonial knife. “It wasn’t really a religious thing. It was an identity thing. I needed the commitment because I knew it would keep me on the right path. I found the true meaning of Sikhism and I loved the warrior aspect of it. “When I was fighting to understand who I am, that (warrior) aspect was something that I really identified with.” Sikhs became warriors because of persecution. But Sajjan says the main religious principle is that a Sikh must be a positive and contributing member of society. “It’s important to defend your own rights. But there is a requirement that you must defend the rights of others. “When I was in Afghanistan, a man came up to me and said, ‘You are a Sikh and I know you must help me’.” Military welcomes Sikhs Sikhism is what pushed him toward the military. Yet, ironically, it was what almost kept him out of the Canadian Forces. At the time Sajjan applied, the RCMP had just refused to accept a turbaned Sikh’s application. The Canadian Forces had no such qualms; Sikhs first served in the Canadian Army in the First World War. But the forces has a rule about gas masks and helmets: Everybody has to be able to wear them. But, at the time, there were no gas masks that worked over beards. Even the Indian and British armies didn’t have any. So, Sajjan invented an apparatus to make it work. He’s since patented it. As for the helmet, Sajjan learned to tie his turban differently. “I have never caved in to taking the turban off. I have integrated the principles of Sikhism in a very respectful way.” Not only has it been an enormous benefit to Sajjan, but to Canada. While Canadian and Afghan forces were getting ready for Operation Medusa, an Afghan soldier was surprised Sajjan was with the Canadian Army, not the Indian. He was more surprised to learn Sajjan was a major. “He told me that if Canada lets you come to the country and be an officer, if they let you do that, then maybe Canada is here to help us. “He said if they respect you and treat you the same, then maybe what Canada says here is genuine.” Sajjan says diversity is an essential part of the Canadian Forces. “Diversity is an operational necessity. It’s more than language skills. It’s a way of thinking. … How we are raised in Canada is very important to the fibre of the Canadian Forces.” In Bosnia, Sajjan’s turban caused a minor issue in some Serb neighbourhoods. He defused concerns by telling them that as a Sikh, he was likely the only neutral person in the Muslim/Christian conflict. He eventually established such close rapport that an elderly woman knit him a pair of socks. Sajjan still has them. Sajjan has been wounded in battle and had so many close calls he gave up counting after 40. So I asked him about fear. “It doesn’t matter whether it’s Cyprus, the Sinai, Bosnia, Croatia or wherever, the fear is always there. … Fear is the healthy way to do the right thing to come home alive.” And Sajjan has a lot to live for. He’s got two children, aged one and four. His wife, Kuljit, is a family physician. Sajjan attributes to Kuljit the hard-won wisdom that it’s not what you look like, but what you do that matters. And, for the lieutenant-colonel, that means serving others.

  44. Differences have cropped up in the state Youth Congress over the issue of opposing the construction of a memorial at the Golden Temple in memory of those killed during Operation Bluestar. State Youth Congress chief Bikram Choudhry had declared to hold a protest on June 20 against the construction of the memorial. But the announcement has not gone down well with some Youth Congress leaders who have openly declared to boycott the protest. Raising his voice against the protest, Kamaljit Singh Brar, Punjab Youth Congress general secretary and son of former Congress MLA from Baghapurana Darshan Singh Brar, said, “This issue is connected to the religious sentiments of the Sikh community and therefore, the state Youth Congress should not appose the construction of the memorial.” Brar said, “No political party should mix politics with religious issues as this could disturb the communal harmony and peace in the state. He added that the Youth Congress should raise its voice against injustice being done to people and other social evils prevailing in the state.

  45. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/sikh-cricket-fan-denied-entry-in-lords/821934/ Baptized Sikh cricket fan Gurdev Singh was denied access to the Lord's cricket ground on Sunday after he was found to be carrying a traditional Kirpan (dagger). On being denied entry, Singh staged a protest outside the east gate of the Lord's cricket ground, where a Test match between India and England is being played. “I was refused entry because I did not agree to take off my Kirpan as Kirpan is a body part of a Sikh. It is always on our body, we wash with it, we clothe ourselves everyday, we go everywhere with our Kirpan. That much respect we give to our Kirpan,” said Singh. “It is the same Kirpan that saved half of people and are able to live in freedom, when Sikhs went from all the villages from Punjab, from Jalandar, Phagwara, Ludhiana and came in for with these English people against the Nazis. A woe, which had nothing to do with us but yes my ancestors which I am proud of, they came from India fought here, honorably. And gave me the ability to live freely but now I am asked to take my Kirpan off and refused entry,” added Singh He said that Lord's might be a legendary cricket venue, but it is also one of the dirtiest places in London. Kirpan is a curved ceremonial dagger and is regarded as one of the key religious symbols of the Sikh community. Five articles of faith are required to wear by baptized Sikhs, the Kirpan, the Kara – a steel bracelet, the Kachhehra – a type of shorts, kes – the unshorn hairs and the Kangha – a comb, which is further covered by a turban. ... contd.
