I was at the Slough Singh Sabha gurdwara last week. I think he was a teen, a tall young Singh got a deep gash wound on his arm from gatka, somewhere near his wrist. He was already on the floor when I entered through the langar hall, but I am sure he did it to himself not through a gatka "battle". I am unsure which shastar he used. I checked and the shastars seemed lightweight for the children. I picked up the khanda and it was light, not like a real khanda. I really want to emphasise that we should not be promoting twirly sword dancing as a "sikh martial art". This young Singh was hurting and gasping - why are we teaching twirling swords around in a way that may hurt oneself?? Promote shastarvidiya savai raksha and other martial arts which are about causing damage to the enemy. Why are we teaching this style of twirly gatka that's detrimental/harmful to ourselves and our allies? A twirly sword might hurt an ally in a battle, and doesn't allow allied warriors good movement around the sword twirler. This also reminds me during the summer, they were teaching some move to kids where you do some spins with the feet and then do a backwards bhangra type jump. I wasn't sure if this was a martial art or bhangra being taught?! Also at another gurdwara in another city/town in the midlands, the year before at a kids sikh club a guest gatka teacher was teaching basics to little kids by making then practice making infinity symbols with the gatka sticks!!! If we are showing off something ineffective and also harmful to the practitioner and allied warriors, then it's nothing to be proud off! If we are going to show our puraatan shastars off, we need to do it in a respectable manner not in this archaic colonial gatka era! The teaching is just as embarrassing as the last 2 decades and I don't understand why we want to promote it as a sikh martial art, to the sangat and to outsiders? the injuries are just not worth it for learning this modern gatka! "Preserve Shastar Vidiya any way you can."(Rattan Singh Bhangu, Siri Guru Panth Parkash, ed. Dr Balwant Singh Dhillon, 36)2 points

Good point. In fact, in the old days, there simply were not enough birs of Gur Granth Sahib ji to go around. So prakash of shasters was done in some Gurdwaras. You can matha tek to a Gutka Sahib, too.2 points

When you are at home, you can do ardas in front of sastar as well.2 points

In general, no one really uses forums a lot anymore and growth is stagnant. Usually they're populated by OG users and once they stop posting and cease their activity, others tend to follow suit. There are still some socials that have engaging talks about Sikhi. You can try Twitter (X), Discord, Reddit, Tiktok, gurdwareh group chats, etcetera. Idk man. Sikhi as a whole is pretty much dying tbf. It makes sense that you'll see less engagement over time. A lot of people contend that the religion is being revived in the west, in particular by Gen Z. The zoomer lot is definitely kind of active, but they're mostly all talk and no action. It's like some kind of flex to feign religiosity. It's not just Sikhi though, it's all of 'em. Not only that, but at one point you just grow up and have more serious matters to attend to. I used to be online for hours and hours and mess around and post but now I don't even have time to do anything b/c I'm spending time with my family & getting married soon. Now, I'm just worried about making babies. Everything's a blur. There are probably others that feel the same as well.2 points

I guess easier ways of learning have taken precedence. There are so many Youtube channels and podcasts available that people are more ready to listen for knowledge at their own leisure. There are so many great kathas available online that take months to listen, so that people may not really get the time to come here and write.2 points

Umm, that's totally irrational, bro. There are plenty of prakash-dara Singhs in Punjab (less than we'd like, but still plenty). No one cares that you are sabat soorat. It isn't 1986. You can walk around in chola, kurta-pajama, or jeans. Whatever. If you want the look @dallysingh101 is referring to, just go into a cheap clothing shop (not a Western-style mall) and buy some shirts for 250 rupees or a track suit for 2000 rupees. You'll get the cheap stuff made in some sweatshop in Bombay.1 point

You're confusing two different things: One is merely adding starch to a turban to get a certain feel to the fabric. The other is tying your turban once and taking it off like a hat. It is this that people have a problem with. What's wrong with it is that Rehit says to tie your turban afresh every time. If you ask, "Where is that written?", it's written in Bhai Nand Lal ji's Rehitnama. @ipledgeblue didn't just make it up. Umm, no, bro. We're not evangelical Christians like President George W Bush of the US claiming to "talk to God" who told him to invade Iraq. "Speaking to him directly" basically ends up being doing whatever you feel like with the excuse that Guru ji told you to do it. If you still want to take your turban off like a hat, feel free to do so, but don't claim that it's Rehit.1 point

I purchased my Gutka Sahib from the bookshop adjacent to Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib Patiala… You could try the UK Gurdwara shops, or other UK Gurbani stores…1 point

Yes very true, however many years ago. Let's say 10, SA didn't have the number of users this forum had. I've used both before 20101 point

That’s true but forums like Sikh Awareness who allow open discussions have also seen a hit in the amount of traffic.1 point

What he said. Moreover, For some reason admins around a decade ago allowed their personal beliefs to dictate what could be discussed and what could not. Many topics were blocked. Some members with their pack mentality didn't like to hear members with different views and beliefs.1 point

There is nothing wrong with starched pagg. The Guru is omniscient (all-knowing). You think he doesn't know our intentions? If somebody wears a starched pagg but still respects it as a crown then whats wrong with that? People think that starch automatically makes people lose their respect for their pagg but thats just false. And dont make this a caste thing I’m Rajput Jatt sikh (not an ounce of Tarkhan or anything else) and we all starch our INDIAN style punjabi paggs (patiala shahi), but respect them as our crowns and our literal lives. A respected starch pagg is better by far than a freshly tied one which people just disrespect. And people forget that these are not ready made or pre-tied turbans. You still tie them initially but just of course not as frequently. What’s wrong with that? When your relationship is that strong with the Guru then you know what he means. Speak to him directly, explain why and ask him if it’s okay. Btw I know people who dont starch their turbans (all punjabi/morni style btw) and they just wear it again the next day without tying it if they have toed it really nicely the day before. You cant really even tell who had tied it and who just wore it again without starch. At least we’re open about it. Bhul chuk maaf1 point

How is it going to help? The link is of a Sikh hunter. Fine, but what good does that do the lazy Sikh who ate khulla maas in a restaurant? By the way, for the OP, yes, it's against rehit to eat khulla maas.1 point

which goes back to my original post, most gurdwaras are scamming us by using the Ramgharia label. the amount of monay and trim Singhs that call themselves Ramgharia, is bare disrespectful and just continues the scam! There are some Nihang groups which use the misl label nowadays. There should be a group of Nihangs to claim the Ramgharia misl label, and it needs to be taken away from the scammers!1 point

*bump There's quite a bit of crazy stuff written on this forum, this is probably why this site is down sometimes. But I agree the OP, the future is not looking good at the moment1 point

Refraining from killing innocent people and raping women is not "virtue signalling." What is the purpose of massacring innocent people who are taking a train to Pakistan? What threat do they pose? How is killing people who are already on their way out of country necessary to ensure your survival? If you think it is okay to kill innocent people who pose no threat to you, then you don't believe in Sikhi. If you think it is okay to kill children or rape women under any circumstances, then you don't believe in Sikhi. It is not that complicated.1 point

Maybe the people who committed such acts saw members of their family killed by muslims or heard of them. It is human nature. You have to remember the muslims also did the same to us. There were also more of them in East Punjab compared to the number of Sikhs in West Punjab so it was a case of a larger group. Of people being in the wrong place in the wrong time. Most of the businesses and economy in Lahore was run by Hindus but that was not enough as it was about 65% Muslim. As you mentioned before on this thread Sikhs have little influence anywhere. Our population is miniscule in South Asia and the world, we're also not clever like the Jews. We should be thankful that we have a state that has a Sikh majority so at least we get to have a Chief Minister.1 point
-
As mentioned muslims only understand savagery done back to them. That's why we were so successful back in 1947 despite being in much smaller numbers. We outsavaged them. Just remember what the Taliban did to Afghan Sikhs.1 point

no excuses, but these days people are getting married at stupidly older ages. And a lot of teens, 20s and students have no control of their vikaar panj chor, and they end up in these stupid trash girlfriend boyfriend partnerships instead of anand karaj or marriage! They are really stupid in not getting married. Some people NEED to be married in their teens or by the time they reach 20! Although even 20 is too old for many people, they already have baggage by then, and some also have out of wedlock kids and abortions! The biggest hypocrisy I used to see growing up was teens saying they are too young to get married, yet they used to make partners anyway through "dating" bakwass trash garbage! We need to change our mentality, and youngsters need to be explained to seriously that they should only be looking for marital partners, and not down this spiral! this stuff is happening more and more because of looking for partners so LATE: Remember, at Guru jis' times the parents used to even start looking for future partners in the childrens' pre-teens, and this includes Guru jis. There is no excuses in starting to look for your childrens' partners in their 20s only! We are so ill-prepared, and so mentally ill-equipped. Late marriages are also causing more sikhs to cut hair kesh and beard, and drinking and drug issues as well as smoking and hookah etc. There is less focus on grihast jeevan and more focus on depression, desires and pleasure. We are also having less children, and too big age gaps between generations. Our Singh families should be having more children, and less gaps between ages. Need more Singhs to protect families and the panth, too many attackers on every side!1 point

Nothing really shocking from a Jihadi to be honest. Only savagery on these people really works. You have to out-muslim the muslim in this case unfortunately. It is the only language they understand. I think the only thing that will stop Hamas is complete genocide of Gaza. Not something I am proud or happy to say1 point

and those same biharis are now turning on their employers and raping or running away with their daughters , beating and killing their sons via drugs . They are being supported by GOI to buy land in Punjab remember these were folks who were so hardup they had to move across India to make a living , it is part of the three pronged approach . destroy the history, the economics and then the people1 point

Mate, your excuses are cringe. We've got major issues, we only seem to be coming out of the decades of abuse of Sikh institutes by the Badal Jut pariwar. People like you with mota dimaag, zero critical thinking skills aren't helping. No one in their right mind would defend the SGPC. But here you are doing it.1 point

There is a group of Singhs in the uk who met with Baba Ji in 1999 when they were doing Tap at Guru Ka Lahore. There are also pictures from this time as well. To say Baba Ji went into hiding to live another life is quite absurd. Ask those who did Seva of Baba Ji when they stayed in California.1 point

Unfortunately our people have a tendency to want to replicate what someone else had done. For years there was never a Punjabi radio station, then one started and a few years later there were nearly a dozen. The same happened with the satellite channel, Sikh channel started and then another channel came up and then another etc. This is pointless, what is needed is 1 Sikh channel or two channels, 1 in Punjabi and the other in English for the youth and for parchar. Ravi Singh started his karobar in 1999 and now we have over a dozen organisations who seem to think that we are just on this planet to transfer our wealth onto other communities. There's Langar Aid, Hemkunt Foundation, United Sikhs etc. Now on twitter you cannot read a few tweets about Sikhs without some pointless tweet from one of the organisations banging their drums about how great they are how they are helping humanity.1 point
-
Ravi Singh thinks it's more important to help a group of people with 42 countries and rich oil reserves compared to stateless Sikhs with no support from anyone in the world.1 point

People who starch their paghs also gell and glue their dharis, this is probably even worse. Your dhari is supposed to flow not be plastered to your face. Most people who glue their dharis to their face have damaged their dharis and have bald patches in their dhari.1 point
